RE: Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

Here us the response from Expats Tax Thailand’s experts: “The key issue here is not just U.S. Social Security but the broader challenge of how international tax rules are applied at the local level in Thailand. The 2024 remittance tax changes have introduced complexities that some local tax offices — especially in provincial areas — may not yet fully understand. Many expats have reported difficulties due to inconsistent guidance, as well as language barriers when trying to clarify their tax position.

“In cases like U.S. Social Security, the rules are clear: it is not taxable in Thailand, nor does it need to be included on a Thai tax return. However, misunderstandings at the local level can lead to unnecessary stress and potential disputes with tax authorities.

“For expats looking to avoid these difficulties, using a professional tax filing service can help ensure compliance while avoiding the frustration of dealing with tax offices unfamiliar with international tax agreements.”

Do you know about macular degeneration?

Many of us are painfully aware of our body’s increasing number of shortcomings as we get older. Sagging skin, hearing loss, receding hairlines and tending to use the bathroom more frequently than we used to.

But one of the most dreaded adverse outcomes is that of diminishing eyesight. Reduced vision, also known as vision impairment, is common in older people. While many factors can contribute to it occurring, the leading cause of vision loss in older adults is age-related macular degeneration, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Top Thai Officers Probed Over Links to Scams in Myanmar

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. This action follows the transfer of five senior officers from Tak province, a move that has raised eyebrows due to the significant wealth of one of the officers.

At the heart of the investigation is Police Maj Gen Ekkarat Intasueb, acting chief of Inspection Division 6 for the Office of the Inspector General. His duties encompass seven provinces, including Tak, which is directly opposite Myawaddy — a known hub for scam syndicates. As inquiries progress, he has been relocated to Bangkok by order of the national police chief. Continued …

Thailand is on track to become a global gaming hotspot with ambitious plans to establish a lucrative casino industry. The country aims to tap into billions of dollars in revenue while boosting its thriving tourism sector. However, experts caution that success hinges on effective regulation, something that has previously been a challenge, as seen with the mishandled cannabis legalization in 2022.

Thailand’s potential to surpass Singapore’s glamorous casinos is being touted, with big players like Las Vegas Sands Corp, MGM Resorts International, and Galaxy Entertainment possibly showing interest. Though none of these companies have commented yet, Thailand remains a promising contender. Continued …

Chinese Tourists Choose Japan Over Thailand for New Year

In a surprising turn of events, Thailand has been knocked off its pedestal as the favorite destination for Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year period, with Japan now taking the crown.

Is the Growth of Thailand’s Medical Tourism Industry Sustainable?

Thailand is one of the most attractive medical tourism hubs in the world. The country’s total number of foreign medical patients rose from two million in 2012 to 3.4 million in 2018. This is nearly three times the corresponding figure for Malaysia, another regional hub.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic adversely affected the industry, it has since recovered, with total foreign patients reaching three million in 2024. The industry generates substantial foreign exchange earnings for Thailand, estimated at US$9 billion in 2019. Such earnings are reliable as the average spending of medical tourists is relatively high and less sensitive to price increases over time. Continued …

The State of the Stomach in Bangkok

Look at Bangkok through the lens of Instagram, a travel article, or a listings website, and these days the city’s restaurant scene can appear to be all about Michelin stars. The brand swept into the city in 2017, and in a short time, chefs and diners alike became obsessed with collecting its celestial accolades.

Yet, look at Bangkok from ground level, and you’ll see a very different picture. The curry shacks, noodle stalls, legacy restaurants, and street vendors that have shaped the city’s dining scene for decades continue to put out some of the best value, casual, unselfconscious, full-flavored, delicious food on earth, all while blissfully unaware of a French tire manufacturer’s rating system. Changes in oil prices should lead to a drop in liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices, relieving concerns over expensive electricity bills in Thailand, which are partly determined by the price of imported LNG, according to an official at the Energy Ministry. Gas accounts for 60% of fuels used for power generation in the country. Continued …

Pattaya’s Mass Tourism Strain: Overcrowding and Ecological Harm

Pattaya, a once tranquil beach escape, is feeling the mounting pressures of being a tourism hotspot. Beyond just the spike in airfares, overcrowding, environmental harm, and infrastructure challenges are threatening the city’s allure and manageability.

A significant concern is the toll on local infrastructure. The constant flood of tourists often overwhelms public transportation, roads, and basic utilities, leaving services less reliable. Particularly during peak times, traffic congestion transforms travel within the city into a daunting experience for everyone. The inadequate public transport system compounds the chaos, with many resorting to motorcycles or taxis, worsening the traffic scenario. Continued …

Thailand’s struggling battle against air pollution

For weeks now, most of the friends and families I know have had a cough of some kind. The pollution in the dry season in Thailand has long been a problem. But recently, it’s reached dangerous and deeply worrying levels.

Bangkok was the fourth most polluted city in the world this month. Across 31 districts 352 schools were also closed because of pollution. For weeks, I’ve had to rush my children into school with masks on, as the cheery teachers apologetically declare: “Pollution day so straight into class, please.” Continued …

It also monitored and forecast air pollution. Continued …

To help you make an informed decision, we’ve put together essential information that you need to consider before taking to the road on two wheels. Continued …

Colder weather forecast for most of Thailand until Monday

The Thai Meteorological Department today forecast a decrease in temperature by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the northeast and by 2-4°C in the remaining regions except for the lower south from today to Monday. Prachuap Khiri Khan Town: A serious option for long-term living

There are three places in my home province of Prachuap Khiri Khan where I like to spend time. Hua Hin is at the north end of the province. It’s the largest of the three, and is a popular tourist and expat destination, with a seemingly endless amount of goods and services.

Ban Krut is at the south end of the province. It’s a sleepy little fishing village that gets busy on weekends with tour groups from Bangkok and hosts a small, mostly German expat community. Continued …

Air pollution, which peaks in many parts of the region during the dry season from now until April, is linked to over 100 deaths in children under five every day.

The analysis reveals that all children in East Asia and the Pacific – 500 million children in total – live in countries with unhealthy levels of air pollution. Household air pollution, caused by solid fuels used for cooking and heating, is linked to more than half of all air pollution-related deaths in children under five. Meanwhile, 325 million children live in countries where average annual particulate matter (PM2.5) levels exceed World Health Organization (WHO) guideline levels by more than five times. Continued …

Cost, quality remain top considerations for travelers

Cost and quality remain the dominant priorities for travelers, outweighing sustainability considerations, according to the latest report by the WTTC. In a survey of more than 10,000 respondents, more than 50% said cost was the most important factor influencing purchasing decisions, while around 30% prioritized quality. Only a small minority (from 7% to 11%) said sustainability was a primary factor.

Julia Simpson, WTTC president and CEO, said: “Travelers care about sustainability but when buying travel, cost and quality are king. Customers expect businesses to create affordable sustainable options. But many WTTC companies inspire change – whether that is regrowing coral reefs or reducing food waste. Customers engage with brands that have strong values.” Continued …

Bangkok’s light pollution has unseen impacts on health, ecosystems, and sustainability. With skyglow levels among the highest in the region, Bangkok’s artificial illumination is disrupting ecosystems, affecting human health, and increasing energy consumption. Despite its significance, light pollution remains largely unregulated in Thailand.

In the evening, as one ventures out in Bangkok, the city’s towering billboards and their brightly lit screens stand out just as much as its looming skyscrapers. These massive displays cast an intense glow, sometimes dazzling nearby drivers and pedestrians. Some of the city’s highways are fully covered on the sides with rows of these dazzlingly lit-up billboards displaying their consumerist wares. Continued …

Thai Exports Surge by 8.7% in December Amid Looming Trade War Concerns

In December, Thai exports surged by 8.7% year-on-year, extending a six-month growth streak. The total export value reached USD24,765.9 million, surpassing forecasts from SCB EIC and the Reuters Poll. This consistent performance was bolstered by demand driven by concerns over U.S. trade protection measures and a notable rise in electronics and gold exports.

This robust export growth was further supported by strong demand from key trading partners, including China and the United States. Additionally, the weaker Thai baht played a role in enhancing the competitiveness of Thai products in global markets. Analysts suggest that this upward trend in exports could continue into early 2025, provided global economic conditions remain stable and trade policies remain favorable. Continued …

Time to decommodify electricity

The international community has long recognized the urgent need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and shift to renewable energy, and in recent years many governments have pledged to reach net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions, albeit over extremely long timeframes. But they will never get there so long as they treat electricity, which is central to the clean-energy transition, like any other market good.

The green transition is driven by several factors, such as energy intensity, investment flows, consumption patterns, and distribution systems. But its success hinges on humanity’s ability to move away from “dirty” fossil fuels toward clean, renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind. And that requires a profound transformation in how electricity is generated, distributed, and consumed. Continued …

Pulling a cure out of thin air

The government’s latest efforts to cope with PM2.5 are based on concerns over its harmful impact and a hope for cleaner air, a recurring problem at the beginning of calendar years.

With most provinces in Thailand blanketed by ultra-fine dust for weeks in January, measures to address the issue were launched in quick succession, ranging from reducing bushfires and transboundary haze to ad hoc efforts such as providing free bus and electric train services for Bangkokians, while temporarily closing schools where the smog is rampant. Haze pollution was a chronic problem nationwide long before the capital was blanketed in PM2.5 pollutants over the past few weeks.

The situation is so serious the Bangkok government recently allocated more than 140 million baht to subsidize free public transport, aiming to persuade city dwellers to leave their vehicles at home, as an urgent measure to reduce fuel emissions and combustion smoke. Continued …

Specifically, 41.2% found the efforts to be somewhat inefficient, while 35.3% considered them completely inefficient. US trade war will test Thailand

Canada, China, and Mexico yesterday unveiled tariff countermeasures against the U.S., after U.S. President Donald Trump declared he was putting up tariffs against these countries.

On the day of his inauguration, Trump signed a fusillade of orders – among them new tariffs, imposing a 25% levy on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. The orders include retaliation clauses, which means the U.S. will increase tariffs further if the countries respond with similar moves. Continued …

Several factors are driving this early surge, including the race to capture sales before competitors, the government’s Easy E-Receipt 2.0 program encouraging purchases for tax deductions, and the impact of PM2.5 (fine-particulate) air pollution. Continued …
