Two Thai women were arrested for creating fake Facebook pages to scam tourists out of deposits for luxury resort bookings in Pattaya. The suspects were arrested by Tourist Police at their residences in Chonburi and Samut Prakan provinces. Both face charges of “fraud by entering false information into a computer system”.

An elephant overturned a pickup truck on the side of the road with the driver inside, as it is believed that the latter did not wait for the animal to cross the road. The incident happened about 128 kilometers east of the capital Bangkok in rural Chachoengsao province Saturday evening.

Weather warning for heavy rain in 40 provinces

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued another serious weather warning for 40 provinces, urging residents, especially in Bangkok, its surrounding areas, the southern region, and the eastern region, to prepare for heavy rainfall affecting up to 70% of these regions.

In the southern region, the eastern coast will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with some areas getting heavy rain. Provinces affected include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Heavy rainfall drowns domestic travel plans for Hua Hin, Thailand

Heavy downpours in Hua Hin and Cha Am are expected to affect tourism during the three-day holiday this weekend, worsening domestic sentiment, as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) highlighted natural disasters as the most critical factor to watch during the high season.

Heavy downpours set to flood 43 provinces in Thailand

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued another warning for continuous heavy rainfall impacting 43 provinces, including Bangkok and southern regions, with 70% of the areas affected, posing risks of flash floods.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with very heavy rainfall expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Flood-related bacterial infections on the rise

Thailand’s Disease Control Department is alerting the public to a rapid rise in cases of Leptospirosis and Melioidosis during the rainy season and floods. They are bacterial infections to which children are particularly prone and which require close monitoring.

Dr. Weerawat Manosuthi stated that there were about 6,000 cases of these diseases reported, with 119 deaths, in the first nine months of this year. Continued …

Phuket’s reservoirs overflow, more rain on the way

Phuket’s reservoirs are bursting at the seams, with Bang Niew Dam in Srisoonthorn now at 103% capacity. The island is bracing for more rain and potential flash floods through Saturday, as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of continued downpours.

Bang Niew Dam currently holds 7.39 million cubic meters of water, surpassing its official capacity of 7.2 million. According to the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR), 7.36 million cubic meters is usable volume but the sheer volume has locals on edge. Continued …

New Bangkok Rules Limit Street Vendors to Designated Zones

Persistent rain has caused flooding 20-40 centimeters deep in Cha Am district of Phetchaburi and Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan, and on nearby sections of the Phetkasem Highway.

Bitcoin mining dens that stole 100 million baht of electricity raided

A team of Department of Special Investigation (DSI) police, together with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) officials, raided houses and commercial buildings at several locations across Kanchanaburi that had been turned into Bitcoin mining dens and effectively stolen over 100 million baht in electricity annually.

Thailand eyes $300-billion gas field frozen by Cambodia dispute

The Pheu Thai-led coalition government will restart negotiations with Cambodia to explore an offshore oil and gas field with at least US$300 billion worth of reserves that the two countries have been squabbling over since the 1970s.

Finance Ministry calls for weaker baht, wants 2024 rate cut

The Ministry of Finance ratcheted up pressure on the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to cut interest rates to boost the economy and weaken the baht, just a day after an influential former governor warned against government meddling in the central bank.

“It’s highly possible they will cut this year either this meeting or next meeting,” Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said in an interview in Bangkok on Wednesday, a week ahead of the BoT’s next monetary policy decision. “A 25-basis point cut would be a good start, but whether that is enough or not, we will need to keep monitoring and adjusting.” Continued …

Train derails between Nong Sala and Cha Am

A special express diesel train, designated as Train 43 (Bangkok Apivatan–Surat Thani), encountered an incident this morning while traveling between the Nong Sala and Cha Am stations. The train was reported to have derailed due to a failure in the left third axle.

The derailment occurred at approximately 10:05 a.m. at signal point STHL 178/1-2, shortly after the train passed through Nong Sala at 10:04 a.m. The train was comprised of three carriages and, fortunately, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members. Authorities have indicated that further updates will be forthcoming, and train services to Hua Hin are temporarily halted as a precautionary measure. – huahin.locality.guide

Grief and anger as Thai town holds mass cremation for 23 school bus fire victims

Mourners wept and monks prayed at a cremation ceremony Tuesday in a small town in central Thailand for 23 young students and teachers who died in last week’s bus fire on a school field trip.

New law lets buyers check before paying

A new law allowing customers to open packages of products they ordered online before paying for them has taken effect, according to the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

Thailand hikes flood compensation to 9,000 baht per family

The Cabinet approved the Interior Ministry’s proposal to increase the flood compensation per family to 9,000 baht from the initial criteria, Interior Ministry spokesman Traisuree Taisaranakul said on Tuesday.

Initially, the plan was to base the compensation on the days the houses were flooded. For instance, families were to be paid 5,000, 7,000 or 9,000 baht if their homes were flooded for less than 30 days, between 31-60 days and more than 60 days, respectively. Govt offers Bt10,000 to all flood-affected households

The government will distribute 10,000 baht to households affected by flooding nationwide to help cover cleanup expenses.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that the Comptroller General’s Department had approved a budget allocation request from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, is maintaining a positive outlook for consumer spending in Thailand throughout 2024, as growth continues in sectors such as retail, hospitality, tourism and gastronomy.

Customs Dept sets 122.2-billion-baht revenue goal for 2025

The Customs Department has announced that it expects to make 122.2 billion baht in fiscal 2025, in line with its collection of 117.95 billion baht in revenue during fiscal 2024.

More than 100 elephants were safely evacuated over Friday and Saturday from the flooded Elephant and Environment Foundation, in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province, according to the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang province.

The center said that it received a call for help from the foundation on Friday morning and immediately sent a team to assist. More flooding is expected in beleaguered Chiang Mai later today, with water levels along the Ping River expected to reach 4.95 meters starting in the morning. Recent heavy downpours in upstream areas have caused the Ping River to rise rapidly, Gov. Nirat Pongsitthithaworn said on Thursday.
