Seven boats sink in Gulf and Andaman Sea in four days, eight people still missing

Six tour boats and a fishing vessel have sunk in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea in the past four days. Two passengers, a skipper and five crew are still missing.

The “Sawan Tour” dive boat, carrying 16 tourists, mostly foreigners, on a diving trip near Mu Ko Surin National Park in the Andaman Sea, off Phang-nga province, sank on Dec. 23. Sixteen tourists were rescued and two are missing. Continued …

Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun

A tourist speedboat capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 kilometers from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday. The boat carried 73 tourists, including three children and four crew members.

The Navy’s 491st Special Warfare Squadron quickly responded to the emergency, rescuing everyone on board. The capsizing was caused by strong waves, leading to a breach in the hull. The passengers, all wearing life jackets, were safely transferred to another speedboat. Continued …

Airborne pollutants’ rise prompts health alert in Thailand

WFFT rescues 15 big cats from northern Thailand facility

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on Dec. 16 following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. The National Statistical Office of Thailand (NSO) is urging the government to further promote basic rights, social security and labor protection for workers in the informal sector, citing 2023 statistics that show that more than half of Thailand’s workforce (52.3%), or some 21 million people, are informal workers.

PM2.5 crisis first major test for Srettha’s government

The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

PM2.5 particles are fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are so small that they can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing serious health risks. 33 provinces still blanketed by thick smog

Dangerous levels of ultrafine dust covered 33 of the 77 provinces this morning, an improvement on 47 provinces on Tuesday morning, and the peak pollution level was also down.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that red levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) covered five provinces in the Central Plain, compared with 15 provinces on Tuesday morning. Continued …

Tackling scams: Phone numbers exceeding 100 calls per day to be suspended

In a bid to combat call scams, the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry has announced that any telephone number with more than 100 calls per day will be suspended.

Baht weakens to 35.71/dollar as US announces better job figures

The baht slipped to 35.71 per U.S. dollar at the start of trading on Tuesday following improved labor figures in the U.S. The Thai currency had closed at 35.32 per dollar on Friday.

Gulf Energy CEO remains Thailand’s richest man for 5th consecutive year

Sarath Ratanavadi, CEO of Gulf Energy, Thailand’s third largest energy producer, is Thailand’s richest man for the fifth year in a row, with a net worth of 190.8-billion baht, mostly in shareholdings in Stock Exchange of Thailand listed companies, according to the Money and Banking magazine’s December edition.

(Editor: The king of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, is the richest monarch across the globe. He has an estimated personal worth of around 40 billion U.S. Dollars (1,200-billion baht.)

Ratanavadi’s net worth, by September 2023, had reduced by 12.86% percent since last year. He owns 35.7% of the shares of the Gulf Energy public company, worth about 190 billion baht, and a 0.67% shareholding in I-Tel Corp. Cabinet delays decision on minimum daily wage increase

Though Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn presented the new minimum daily wage rates to the Cabinet on Tuesday, he admitted that they need to be reconsidered and revised.

The rates were set by a tripartite committee comprising representatives of employers, employees and the government sector. The committee resolved on Friday to increase the daily minimum wage nationwide within the range of 330 to 370 baht based on provinces from Jan. 1 onward. It’s 5:50am and I’m in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, following a single-file column of russet-robed monks as they tread barefoot down the red-dirt road that runs between their monastery and the nearby village. Electricity rise capped at 4.20 baht per unit from January

The new electricity rate will not exceed 4.20 baht per unit when adjusted in January next year, the Energy Ministry said on Friday.

The announcement came after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Wednesday set the fuel tariff (FT) for January to April at 4.68 baht per unit, a rise of 0.69 baht. However, the ministry said 4.68 baht per unit was just the ERC’s suggested rate. Continued …

Business operators urged the Thai police to arrest nearly 30 foreign beggars from Middle Eastern countries who have been begging and causing a public nuisance in Soi 4 near Nana Plaza in Bangkok for the past two months.

The province of Loei issued a stern prohibition on illegal burning in a bid to mitigate the toxic smog crisis. Phuket officials accused of extorting Thai women and their foreign husbands

Multiple Thai women accused officials at district offices in Phuket of extorting money from them and their foreign husbands. The alleged malpractice involves overcharging them between 3,000 to 8,000 baht for marriage certificates, a substantial increase from the standard 200-baht fee.

A halt on issuing gun licenses for a year has been authorized by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul as part of an effort to reduce gun violence, announced Traisuree Taisaranakul, secretary to the interior minister. Cabinet approves THB3.48-trillion budget for fiscal year 2024

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the fiscal year 2024 budget of 3.48 trillion baht. The budget represents an increase of 9.3% over the 3.185 trillion baht in the previous fiscal year.

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. 126 Thai companies blacklisted for labor rights violations

Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.

The cancellation of flight slots by several Chinese airlines following low passenger demand won’t have an impact on the government’s visa exemption policy for Chinese citizens, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said yesterday.
