Thailand to tax expats’ foreign income irrespective of remittance

The Revenue Department of Thailand will amend a law to tax individuals with foreign income, even if that income is not brought into Thailand.

Director-General of the Revenue Department, Kulaya Tantitemit, stated that the current tax law mandates individuals residing in Thailand for over 180 days per year to pay taxes on foreign income if it is brought into the country. Continued …

Most people do not need to get a booster against the latest strain of Covid-19, except for vulnerable groups and the unvaccinated, as the symptoms are relatively mild and the vaccine must be paid for, according to virologist Yong Poovorawan.

Three Thai national parks could be filming locations for Jurassic World 4

The National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department is expected to take a few days to consider a request from the production team of “Jurassic World 4”, the latest film the Jurassic Park franchise, to use three national parks as locations.

King cobra nest discovered in Hat Yai rubber plantation

A team of southern herpetologists and rescue workers recently discovered a king cobra’s nest in a rubber plantation in Hat Yai. They plan to incubate the eggs before releasing the hatchlings into the wild.

Upon arrival, the rescue team found a large king cobra consuming a lesser snake beside its nest. They waited for the cobra to finish its meal before attempting to capture it. The process took approximately 13 minutes due to the snake’s aggressive nature and protective instinct over the eggs. When cannabis or ganja was legalized (the plant was removed from the illicit drugs list) in 2022 by the Prayut Chan-o-cha government, this led to mass confusion, whereby the public misunderstood and perceived it as “liberalization”. This resulted in widespread and unregulated cannabis consumption.

Nearly 15 Million ‘Fragile’ People Entitled To Digital Wallet by September

Officially named as “fragile” types of people, nearly 15 million nationwide will be entitled to the 10,000-baht, digital wallet handout project before fiscal 2024 ends, government spokesperson Chai Wacharong confirmed yesterday.

The 14.98 million “fragile” Thai nationals who may currently hold state welfare cards will be the first recipients to the 10,000-baht digital wallet to be handed out within the end of September, which marks the end of the current fiscal year, while other categories of recipients totaling some 35 million will have to wait until the fourth quarter of this year or during October and December, according to the government spokesperson. Thailand exported goods worth US$23.278 billion in April, a 6.8% growth year-on-year, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) announced Thursday.

Auto industry seeks stimulus as sales plummet

Vehicle production in April fell 11.02% year-on-year (YoY) to 104,667 units, and the auto industry is expecting measures from the government to boost demand, according to Surapong Paisitpatanapong, adviser to the president of the Automotive Industry Group.

Thai mango exports more than double in first three months

Thailand’s exports of fresh mango in the first quarter this year increased 130%, to about 1.6 billion baht, compared to the same period last year, while exports of sticky rice increased 13%, to about one billion baht during the same period.

Chotima Iemsawasdikul, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, said the TasteAtlast website’s recent ranking of Thai mango sticky as the world’s second best rice pudding has further increased the popularity of the dessert in numerous countries, offering a good opportunity for Thai exporters to increase exports and make use of the FTAs Thailand has with ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong. Baht likely to face near-term volatility

The baht is likely to be volatile in the near term, pending clear signs from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) concerning interest rate cuts, with the Thai currency expected to slide to 37.25 baht to the dollar within 1-3 months, bouncing back to 36 to the greenback by year end, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Wildlife officers help baby elephant stuck in mud

Thailand wildlife officers rescued a baby elephant that was stuck in mud as they patrolled a forest for poachers last week. Rangers discovered the three-year-old animal while conducting searches at Thap Lan National Park in Prachinburi province.

They dug around the hole and laid down thin branches to create an angled pathway for the elephant to climb. The rangers were unsuccessful so returned the next day with more equipment, but the elephant had gone and adult footprints were found in the area. Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said the agenda for the second half includes concluding Thailand-EFTA (European Free Trade Assn.) negotiations by the end of the year (a 10th round is scheduled for August in Switzerland), the third round of Thailand-EU FTA talks in June in Belgium, and discussing an FTA with South Korea in the middle of this year, with talks expected to conclude by the end of 2025 or early 2026. Despite record-high prices, Thailand’s gold demand remains strong, with bar and coin investment showing robust growth in contrast to declining demand for gold jewelry, according to the World Gold Council (WGC) first-quarter Gold Demand Trends Report.

A bus driver died and 29 passengers, both Thai and international, were injured- with two sustaining serious injuries- following a bus crash on Tuesday night. The tour bus was en route from Chiang Mai to Bangkok when it lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree.

Caps on diesel, cooking gas, power to continue for now

The Cabinet has given the go-ahead to extend three subsidies in a bid to continue easing people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

The measures are: Capping the retail price of diesel at 33 baht per lit; capping cooking gas at 423 baht per 15kg canister; capping electricity at 19.05 baht per unit for households using less than 300 units per month. Continued …

Hua Hin takes ‘long term’ measures to improve water supply

Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

Hua Hin celebrates legacy of boxing champion Pone Kingpetch

The Hua Hin municipality commemorated the legendary Thai boxer Pone Kingpetch on the 64th anniversary of his historic world title win with a series of events yesterday honoring his contributions to the sport and his enduring legacy in the community.

The celebration took place at Pone Kingpetch Public Park, named after the celebrated athlete who was the first Thai to claim a world boxing championship. A ceremony was held at the statue of Kingpetch, commemorating his victory over Argentine flyweight world champion Pascal Perez April 16, 1960. Continued …

Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Gold prices in Thailand surge to historic 42,050-baht high

Gold prices reached a new high yesterday, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reporting a significant increase to 42,050 baht per baht weight, marking a historic surge. In a remarkable shift, gold ornament prices soared by 600 baht compared to the previous day’s closing figures.

Most Thais waiting for 10,000-baht digital handout, opinion poll finds

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Under the scheme, all Thais aged 16 and above with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local shops. The scheme is expected to cost around 500 billion baht, but will boost the economy by 1.2%-1.6%, the ruling Pheu Thai Party claimed while campaigning for votes. Continued … 

Digital wallet ‘super app’ to link with bank apps

The so-called super app earmarked for the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme will work in sync with existing mobile applications for banks on users’ phones, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The app, he explained, was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the Digital Government Development Agency (DGA) for use in any digital-based policies. Rail heralded as future for Thai logistics

Experts have backed rail to transport agricultural products over long distances following a successful trial, which saw a 13-fold lowering of carbon emissions when compared to air freight. It was also cheaper.

Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 Draws 784,000 Participants

Chai Watcharong, a Thai government spokesman, publicly revealed details of a successful “Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024” event from April 11-15, at Ratchadamnoen Klang Road and Sanam Luang, Bangkok.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) statistics, 784,883 individuals, including 693,288 Thais and 91,595 foreigners, participated in the events, which generated more than 2.8 billion baht for the Thai economy. Continued …

Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt said six water trucks and city officials were deployed to clean up this tourist attraction starting at 4am on Tuesday. Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt supervised about 250 city workers in the cleanup of Khao San Road yesterday morning. About 200,000 Songkran revelers were estimated to visit the area Monday and Monday night, which was the last day of the Songkran celebrations there. Continued …

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The data, up to date as of yesterday, shows 10,723,953 foreign visitors have contributed to an income of 518 billion baht (US$14 billion).

Chinese tourists led the pack with over 2 million visitors, followed by 1.39 million from Malaysia, 695,624 from Russia, 619,186 from South Korea, and 546,935 from India, as stated by the Tourism and Sports Ministry. Continued …

Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. I watch for a while, then return inside, where it takes the nocturnal serenade of an Indian nightjar to lull me back to sleep.

Here’s the really wild part. My tent is pitched in Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest national park and one of the world’s newest UNESCO heritage sites. It’s in the southwest, a £12 taxi ride from the golden beaches of the ritzy resort of Hua Hin, itself a £1 train ride from Bangkok.
