A Life Changing Move to Rural Thailand

Charissa Enget needed to find an engineering course she could afford. She found one in rural Thailand, where she got a scholarship and living costs were low. It took her six months to learn the language so she could communicate with fellow students, make friends, and travel round the country at weekends.

“I think living abroad is a lot different from traveling abroad, just because you really get to know the people and experience the culture, and it changes your way of thinking a lot more. Thailand changed the way I interact with people in a lot of ways, and I feel bonded to Thailand for the rest of my life. It really changed the way I want to live my life, and I’ll never stop loving Thailand or traveling back there as much as I can.”

After two years, she decided that Thailand would always be a part of her life. Today, she leads trips to share her adventures and introduce American women to her friends and local families. Continued …

Tropical storm Soulik to hit Thailand with heavy rain for 5 days

Tropical storm Soulik over central Vietnam is forecast to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rain to several parts of Thailand for the next five days, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

The department said that the storm developed from a tropical depression and was centered about 90 kilometers southeast of the Quang Tri coast with sustained winds of about 65 kilometers per hour. Continued …

Flooding persists in six provinces

Floods remain in six provinces in the north, the northeast, the Central Plains and the south, affecting more than 33,000 families.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported on Thursday that flooding continued in Chiang Rai and Phitsanulok provinces in the north; Nong Khai and Bueng Kan in the northeast; Ayutthaya in the Central Plains; and Satun in the south. Heavy downpour throughout Wednesday night again caused flooding in the downtown area of Nong Khai’s Muang district, barely a day after the previous bout of flooding had cleared.

Doctors propose solutions to public health ‘crisis’

A doctors’ group on Thursday submitted a petition to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, proposing three measures to address the ongoing crisis in the public health system.

Python Unlikely to Return After Attack, Says Wildlife Specialist

Nick Wildlife, a snake expert, points out that the case of a 4-meter-long python constricting a 64-year-old woman on Tuesday night, was not a hunt for prey but an act of self-defense. He also advised on survival techniques when constricted by a python.

Anirut Chomngam, also known as Nick Wildlife, head of the Venomous animal toxicology team, posted a video on his YouTube channel “Nick Wildlife” to explain this case. A soccer player who once appeared for Arsenal in the Champions League has been charged in connection with trying to smuggle cannabis worth 600,000 pounds ($800,000) through a British airport.

Baht’s biggest rally since 1998 threatens tourism, exports

Thailand’s baht is on course for its biggest quarterly gain since the Asian financial crisis, threatening to derail a recovery in the nation’s key tourism and export industries.

The currency’s 10% surge against the dollar since the end of June, the most since the first quarter of 1998, has prompted calls from the tourism and hotel sectors, and business chambers to temper the rally. Bangkok Restricts Street Vending to Low-Income Thais

In a response that has stirred both applause and dissent, new regulations from Bangkok city officials state that only low-income Thais can now set up street vendor stalls. Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt signed the new rules, which exclude migrant workers from participating in one of the city’s most vibrant sectors.

These controversial regulations, enacted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), mandate that eligible vendors must be Thai nationals with specific economic standings. Condo group calls for looser real estate lending rules

The government is advised to ease lending restrictions and reduce interest rates as newly completed condo units worth more than 86 billion baht are awaiting transfer in the fourth quarter, which could lift both the property sector and the entire economy, says the Thai Condominium Assn.

Prasert Taedullayasatit, president of the association, said the transfer value in the fourth quarter alone could be equivalent to the total value from the first three quarters combined. Continued …

FTI proposes corporate tax exemption for businesses affected by flooding

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has proposed to the government that it make an exemption from paying corporate income tax, extends the period for the submission of tax returns and exempts import tariffs on machinery for businesses hardest hit by the flooding.

FTI President Kriangkrai Thiennukul said the industrial confidence index for August was 87.7, which was lower than the preceding month, due mainly to a slowdown in demand, particularly for durable goods like automobiles. Continued …

Thailand to borrow 2.59 trillion baht for 2025 budget

The government of Thailand announced a borrowing plan of 2.59 trillion baht for the 2025 fiscal year, assuring that this will not hinder the private sector’s fundraising efforts, a Ministry of Finance official stated yesterday.

Jindarat Viriyataveekul, public debt adviser at the ministry, said the debt plan, which begins on Oct. 1, should not cause concern in the markets. She explained that approximately 1.1 trillion baht (US$33 billion) would be new borrowing primarily to cover the budget deficit, with the remainder designated for refinancing and restructuring existing debt. The Board of Investment (BOI) has agreed to grant privileges for a Chinese manufacturer Haier Appliance Manufacture (Thailand) Co. to invest 13.4 billion baht in building a factory in Chonburi to produce smart air conditioners for export.

New expat tax regime may link visas and tax returns

The Revenue Department is preparing draft legislation to further its global tax initiative, including plans to tax all foreign residents on their worldwide income, irrespective of whether the money is remitted to Thailand. However, for most expats and those considering Thailand as a place to live, the discussion is only just beginning.

In the meantime, the key consideration is that for those who stay over 180 days in Thailand this year, a tax return is due by March 31, 2025. Certainly, at the very least, foreigners should have obtained and studied their country’s tax treaty with Thailand. Afterward, how the Revenue Department moves to impose its new powers remains to be seen. For instance, it may choose to link tax reporting with the issuance of long-term visas very shortly. Why is Thai healthcare so good?

Thai healthcare is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations.

Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72million was covered by health insurance. Remarkably, Thailand has achieved this as a developing country: its income per person was roughly $7,000 in 2023, more than 11 times smaller than America’s. Even in the middle of the pandemic in 2021, its public-health bill was 6% of GDP, compared with 17% in America and 11% in the European Union. Continued …

Low measles vaccination in 3 southern border provinces causes 5 deaths

The Disease Control Department plans to rush measle vaccines to young school kids in the three southern border provinces after the disease outbreak killed five people there last month, the department chief said.

Director-general Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said on Saturday that measles and German measles were communicable diseases of concern in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces because of the low vaccination rate in the Muslim-dominated southern border provinces. Continued …

Bangkok hospital director promises ‘gas chambers’ for defiant smokers

The director of Mongkutwattana Hospital in Bangkok has vowed to lock defiant smokers on his premises in “gas chambers” until they inhale 100% of their cigarette smoke.

Fisherman survives four days at sea off Satun

A fisherman miraculously survived after floating in the sea off Satun in southern Thailand for four days. Despite exhausting his strength, he managed to stay alive by drinking from a floating bottle of sugarcane juice. His ordeal concluded when waves carried him to Bulon Mai Phai Island.

400-baht daily wage plan set to go ahead

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists on increasing the daily wage to 400 baht nationwide on Oct. 1 despite concerns that the rise will harm businesses.

Gold price falls as baht strengthens

The domestic gold price has dipped by 2,000 baht per baht weight in just over a month, as the Thai currency appreciated by more than 7% during the period, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) noting prices may continue to decline if the value of the baht appreciates.

GTA President Jitti Tangsithpakdi said domestic prices have moved in the opposite direction of the global price for the precious metal, which is currently trading around US$2,520 per ounce. Continued …

PM’s policy statement likely to focus on three mega projects

Revenue Department to push for global minimum tax

The Revenue Department aims to propose a draft act on additional tax to the Cabinet soon, which will cover global minimum tax (GMT) on multinational companies.

Hat Yai has declared it wants to be a medical and wellness hub in the southern region. Sitthisak Tonmongkol, secretary-general of Hat Yai Economic Forum (HEF), said several development projects will be launched to develop the southern city.

Hotel Prices Rise as Phuket Sees 42% Increase in Foreign Tourists H1 2024

Carlos Martinez, director of research and advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

The number of foreign tourists increased by over 42% year-on-year to 2.6 million, close to pre-COVID figures. The improvement in air transportation capacity is expected to support further growth in international tourist numbers in the second half of the year. Continued …

Thai police probe Russian mafia link to tourist’s death on Phuket

A Russian tourist found dead in Phuket a few days ago was possibly the victim of a mafia hit, police suggested. The body of 27-year-old Ilia Orlov showed signs of torture and was left in the open in a popular tourist area near Karon Beach.

Which EV markets and models have performed strongest so far in 2024?

In terms of new electric vehicle (EV) volumes, no market was able to pull ahead of China. In the first six months of 2024, the country recorded nearly 4.3 million plug-in deliveries. This meant that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) made up 43% of the market. BEVs alone made up 25% of sales in this period.

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. Law to tax income from overseas in the works

The Thai Revenue Department is drafting a law to tax the income of individuals residing in Thailand that originates from overseas. The draft follows the international principle of worldwide income under the residence rule, said Kulaya Tantitemit, the director-general of the department.

This principle holds that income earned by an individual, regardless of its source country, must be taxed by the country where the individual resides for a specified period. Continued …

Loss of forest areas in Nan of concern

The northern province of Nan is home to one of the country’s key watershed forests, the source of several major waterways, including the Chao Phraya River. This forest area was declared a first-grade national forest in the 1960s.

The 17,000gt cruise ship Ocean Dream has been anchored off the port of Laem Chabang for more than a year, before it finally took on water and became partially submerged about 2 kilometers off Laem Chabang.

Inflation in September likely to continue upward trend of last few months

The general inflation rate for September is expected to see a slight increase over August, likely ranging between 0.5% and 0.7%, according to Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).

Upturn in Electronics and Gold Push July’s Exports to Highest in Over Two Years

In July, Thai exports rose 15.2% year-on-year, reaching USD25,720.6 million, marking the highest growth in over two years. This surge exceeded analysts’ expectations, influenced by improved global demand, particularly in the electronics sector.

AOT aiming high with airport plans

Airports of Thailand (AOT) has outlined an expansion of its six international airports to manage 210 million passengers by 2032. Kerati Kijmanawat, AOT director, on Friday outlined the Ministry of Transport’s strategic plan for 2023-2027, which aims to make Thailand a regional aviation hub.

As part of that, he said that Suvarnabhumi International Airport aims to have 120 million passengers by 2030, while Don Mueang International Airport expects to reach 40 million in the same year. Chiang Mai International Airport will serve 20 million passengers by 2032, Phuket International Airport will handle 18 million passengers by 2028, and Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and Krabi International Airport will each serve 6 million passengers by 2032. Singapore to build mega airport terminal

Singapore will start construction of a new mega terminal at its Changi Airport in the first half of next year, aiming to lift the aviation hub’s annual passenger handling capacity by another 50 million.

The Thai private sector is expressing concern that the flooding seen in August, which has already caused damage estimated at about 8 billion baht, may get worse this month and into October, due to tropical storms which could hit Thailand, said Payong Srivanich, president of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking.

Thailand to move ahead with casinos plan, official says

The government will move ahead with plans for a mega entertainment complex that would house casinos in Thailand, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said today. A public hearing has concluded and 80% of those who attended agreed with the plan, Julapun said.

Heavy rain is forecast across nearly all of Thailand, with 42 provinces, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas, expected to face severe weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of flash floods, overflowing waterways, and high sea waves over 3 meters.

Thunderstorms are expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani provinces. The minimum temperature will be 23 to 25°C, and the maximum temperature will be 30 to 35°C. Severe PM 2.5 pollution is having a dire effect on the environment and way of life in northern Thailand, forcing many businesses to close and leading to increased health problems. The resultant shift in the area’s social structure is of such concern that Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL) has made it a priority to address and reduce the impact of this deadly pollution.

Swiss man in Phuket acquitted of assaulting doctor

Due to a lack of evidence, the Phuket Provincial Court acquitted a Swiss man who had been charged with assaulting a female Thai doctor when she had allegedly trespassed on his property.

The incident occurred on Feb. 24 at a pool villa housing project on Yamu Beach in Phuket. The Swiss occupant of the house, identified as David, was accused of kicking the back of Dr. Tharndao after finding her sitting on the steps leading up to his compound. The court found that there was insufficient evidence to support the assault charge and ordered his acquittal. – thaipbs.com

Train Runs Over Man in Phatthalung

In a horrifying incident, a 32-year-old man was killed after being struck by a train in Phatthalung province. The man’s wife was left in shock after discovering that her husband’s body was found decapitated near the tracks.

Local witnesses reported seeing the train stop after the collision, and the driver stated that he believed he had hit two individuals, though only one body was found at the scene. Continued … 

Government’s content blocking soars

The Digital Economy and Society Ministry (DES) has blocked 138,660 attempts to access illicit social media pages and website URLs during the past 11 months, an 11-fold increase over the same period last year.

The Thai Pilots Assn. is raising the alarm over liberalizing pilot jobs for foreigners flying domestic routes through wet lease arrangements, claiming it risks another red flag from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

While it’s too early to gauge Chinese e-commerce giant Temu’s long-term impact on the e-commerce market in Thailand and the region, sellers may need to prepare for another price war, says market analytics firm Cube Asia.

VAT rules changed for online sellers in Thailand

The Revenue Department is amending the law to require foreign online platforms to register as vendors in the value-added tax (VAT) system. There are five measures in total, one of which improves regulations to align with future commerce, particularly online trade.

Chinese imports putting four major Thai industries at risk

With just two months to go until the U.S. presidential election, an analyst is warning that no matter who wins, the trade war between the U.S. and China is certain to continue. However, if Donald Trump comes out on top, the impact on Thailand will be more severe, says Phiphat Luangnaruemitchai, chief economist at KKP Research, Kiatnakin Phatra Securities (KKP).

“The likelihood of increased tariffs on China is quite high. This would make Thailand a transit route for trade, and as China’s economy weakens and domestic trade declines, cheap Chinese goods will be exported to many countries, including Thailand,” Phiphat said. Continued … 

Cabinet approves 5 measures to curb ultra-cheap imports

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved five measures made up of 63 operational plans to tackle the influx of ultra-cheap and often substandard products that have been flooding Thai markets, Suksit Srichomkwan, the prime ninister’s deputy secretary-general for political affairs, said.

He said the measures were proposed by the Commerce Ministry, which had discussed with more than 50 public and private organizations ways to prevent ultra-cheap products, especially from China, from affecting both consumers and local manufacturers. Continued … 

Shippers eye 5% growth goal

The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) is calling on the prime minister to set an annual average target of 5% export growth amid risk factors such as the baht’s appreciation and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Russian tourist found dead near Karon Beach, Phuket, murder suspected

A local discovered the body of a Russian man in a ditch near Karon Beach in Phuket yesterday afternoon. A fatal attack is suspected as the man had wounds all over his body.

Officers from Karon Police Station were called to investigate the death of the Russian man, later identified as 27-year-old Ilia Orlov. Forensic doctors from Vachira Phuket Hospital and officers from the Phuket Ruam Jai Rescue Foundation also participated in the investigation. Continued …

Thailand has netted more than 1.3 million kilograms of highly destructive blackchin tilapia fish, the government said Tuesday, as it battles to stamp out the invasive species.

Starved dead whale choked on garbage

A pregnant whale found dead on a beach in Phuket on Monday had choked to death after ingesting large amounts of floating garbage. The dead whale was found on Bang Tao beach in tambon Choeng Thale of Thalang district on Monday morning.

Driver Trapped Underneath Overturned Road Roller in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Rescue teams responded to a distress call regarding an accident involving a steamroller at Village No. 6, Baan Bo Phai, in Sai Thong subdistrict, Bang Saphan Noi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The incident prompted a swift response from emergency services, including rescue teams equipped with cutting tools, as well as an ambulance and medical personnel from Bang Saphan Noi Hospital.

Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers discovered an overturned road roller with its driver trapped underneath. The driver was pinned by the vehicle’s steel frame, which had fallen across his hip and right leg. Continued …

The increasingly frequent deaths involving high buildings and falls are leading to such stories barely registering as news in Thailand anymore. Indeed, in recent years, the reporting of such incidents increasingly leaves out key details. For instance, the identities of victims and the progress of police inquiries.

In particular, regarding foreigners, consular officials at embassies are also less likely to offer explanations to the press. Undoubtedly, many cases involve misadventure and, increasingly, suicide. Thai man walks over 200km to hospital for daughter’s treatment

A Thai man walked over 200 kilometers to take his one-year-old daughter, who suffers from heart disease and a severe lung infection, to a hospital in Chiang Mai‘s city center. A rescue team came to his aid after observing him weeping by the roadside.

The rescuer from the Nopparat Rescue Foundation in Chiang Mai offered a free ride to the 24-year-old single father and his daughter on Friday, after witnessing the man sitting and crying because he could not afford a trip back home. Continued …

Eighth Fatality in Bangkok Methanol Poisoning

The methanol poisoning crisis in Bangkok has claimed its eighth victim, with five others still on ventilators. The situation continues to develop, with health officials and police working to trace the source and prevent more casualties. The latest death occurred at Kasemrad Ramkhamhaeng Hospital, with the patient already in critical condition upon arrival.

Phuket’s newest millionaire is none other than a chief mechanic, who struck gold in the government lottery’s latest draw.

Jirasak “Ton” Saewun, who works at Anuphas Ford in Phuket, scooped 30 million baht after hitting the jackpot with five first-prize tickets. Baht weakens as China falters

The baht led Asian currencies that weakened against the dollar on Monday on a faltering Chinese economy, with analysts suggesting the baht could be on a depreciating trend for the remaining months of this year if the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) cuts rates by less than the 1% reduction anticipated by the market this year.

Bill to get southern Thailand’s land bridge going

The southern land bridge megaproject will move forward, as the government is currently drafting the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) bill, which is required for the project to continue, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said on Monday.

The one-trillion-baht project, which will see a shipping shortcut and various supporting infrastructure built to connect Ranong and Chumphon in the south, will carve out an alternative route for cargo ships heading from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand and vice versa. IEAT sets new record in selling, leasing land in industrial estates

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said it has hit a new record in selling or leasing land in fiscal 2024. A total of 6,174 rai (987.84 hectares) of land in IEAT-managed industrial estates has been sold or leased between October 2023 and July 2024.

Win Process ordered to pay Bt1.7 billion for environmental rehabilitation

Card numbers for online shopping on the way out

Mastercard is expanding its efforts to eliminate the use of credit card numbers when customers make purchases online in a bid to fight fraud. A decade after it first unveiled a technology that replaces consumers’ card numbers with so-called tokens, the company is now processing 1 billion such transactions every week. It took the payments giant three years to process the first billion of such transactions.

Raid on 30 Locations Dismantles Document Forger Network

The Crime Suppression Division conducted raids on 30 locations nationwide, dismantling a network specializing in forging government documents. Two siblings, both computer engineering students from a well-known university in Chiang Rai, were arrested.

Authorities have declared Na Thom and Sri Songkhram districts disaster zones following severe flooding caused by the overflow of three major Mekong River tributaries.

On Friday, the Mekong River reached nearly 11 meters, just one meter below overflow level. The rising waters caused the Nam Oun, Nam Songkhram and Nam Yam rivers to overflow, inundating more than 20,000 rai (7,907 acres) of agricultural land in both districts. Continued …

Samsung sued for ‘defective’ Galaxy phones

The Thailand Consumers Council (TCC) and 119 consumers have filed a class action lawsuit against Thai Samsung Electronics Co. after the company refused to pay compensation for defective devices.

Sophon Nurat, a division head of the TCC, said users had complained about mysterious vertical green or pink lines on phone screens in various Samsung Galaxy models. Improved economic data in July

Economic data in July improved from the previous month, mainly attributed to exports and tourism, according to the Bank of Thailand. The central bank on Friday reported the economic and monetary conditions for July, recording improvement after a slowdown the previous month.

Floods in the north have little impact on foreign tourist plans, says TAT

The ongoing flood situation in several provinces in the northern region has had little to no impact on the plans of foreign tourists, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said. Four tourist provinces in the north – Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae and Nan – have reported flooding in several areas during Aug. 22-28, the TAT said.

A TAT survey revealed that only a small number of tourists have canceled their trips to Chiang Rai due to the flood, TAT Gov. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Jarupatcha Achavasmit, a lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, spent her time in Hua Hin. While walking along the beaches, she noticed that the waves were washing up trash.

Deluge expected with two storms on radar

Thailand is expected to face two storms from September to October, bringing heavy rainfall across various regions, according to the Meteorological Department. Thanasit Iam-ananchai, the department’s deputy chief, said two direct storms are forecast to affect the country during these two months.

The Phuket Big Buddha Foundation faces serious allegations from the Forest Department involving land encroachment, after a tragic mudslide last week at Khao Nak Kerd claimed 13 lives, mostly Myanmar nationals.

Officials from various local authorities, including the Forest Department and Phuket Buddhism Office, recently inspected the Big Buddha site to ascertain if it complied with the 2.4-hectare land limit established by the Forest Department. Thai women track down alleged molester, call police

In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns about the safety of ride-sharing services, a Bolt driver was arrested for molesting two young women on separate occasions. The suspect, identified as Seksan S, 47, was taken into custody by police from Banglamung Police Station on Aug. 27.

The first victim, a 15-year-old girl referred to as Miss Am, recounted her ordeal to the media. On Aug. 25 around 4:30 a.m., she called a white Toyota Vios through the Bolt app. She requested a ride from Soi 17, Pattaya Second Road, to her destination in Soi Nong Ket Yai. Two more deaths have taken the toll in Bangkok’s moonshine methanol scare to six, as investigators widen their search for those producing and selling the deadly rotgut beyond the city’s northern suburbs.

UK warns travelers not to smuggle pot into country

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned travelers to the United Kingdom from Thailand, Canada and the United States that any attempt to bring cannabis into the country could see them sent to jail after a huge increase in arrests was reported.

According to the British embassy in Bangkok, 378 air passengers have been arrested for smuggling cannabis, and an estimated 15 tons of the drug has been detected and seized at UK airports so far this year. Army lawyer joins Hua Hin pub death probe

The Royal Thai Army has appointed a military lawyer to monitor a police investigation into the fatal shooting of one of its intelligence officers in an unlicensed Hua Hin bar that was open after the legal closing time. The army sargeant reportedly was shot in the back of the head.

Jakkrit Worakul, 34, is accused of shooting SM1 Rojchanaphon Rojchanapanich to death inside a pub on Soi 80, a nightlife area just off Phetkasem Road in Hua Hin. The incident also injured three others. Continued …

The Thailand Open tennis tournament will be held next month at Arena Hua Hin, said Suwat Liptapanlop, honorary president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT).

Nine confirmed dead in Chachoengsao plane crash

A small plane carrying nine people, including passengers and crew, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff in Chachoengsao province yesterday. All on board are dead. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when officials began the grim task of recovering the wreckage in Moo 6, Ban Khao Din, Bang Pakong district.

Initially, the bodies of the passengers were nowhere to be found, sparking concern. However, it was soon discovered that the aircraft had plunged nose-first into the earth, embedding itself more than 10 meters deep in the muddy ground. Continued …

Deadly new mpox strain hits Thailand

Thailand confirmed its first case of a potentially deadlier strain of mpox, marking Asia’s first encounter with the virus variant known as Clade 1b. This development follows hot on the heels of the first reported case outside Africa, in Sweden, just a week ago.

Travelers are one step closer to a train journey from Bangkok to Beijing as a new railway bridge over the Mekong River has opened, linking Thailand and Laos by rail for the first time. The Egg Duck Assn. yesterday informed its members about the new farm gate prices for duck eggs. The price per egg has been increased by 10 satang, bringing the total to 5.10 baht per egg. The accused in a fatal shooting of a sergeant in a local pub has been given bail by a Hua Hin court. The head of the Hua Hin Police Station’s Police Affairs Monitoring Committee confirmed that the suspect has been suspended to ensure a fair investigation and comfort the victim’s family.

Tobacco health warnings ‘mandatory’, with Bt5,000 fine

A new control measure on cigarette and tobacco sales takes effect today, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced, saying that violations carry a maximum fine of 5,000 baht.

Painter Falls to His Death from 49th Floor of Bangkok High-Rise

Yesterday, police from Phra Khanong Police Station received a report of a fatal fall at a building in Soi Sukhumvit 64/2, Phra Khanong District, Bangkok. The victim, a 30-year-old painter from Laos, had been working on the exterior of a 49-story building under renovation.

Witnesses reported the victim had been rappeling down from the 49th floor to paint the building when an accident occurred. It is suspected that the safety equipment and rope securing him had shifted, causing him to fall to his death. – aseannow.com

The Thai Red Cross Society has initiated mpox (formerly monkeypox) vaccinations for the public, priced at 8,500 baht per dose, primarily targeting men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners.

The Thai Red Cross has imported the vaccine, which reportedly reduces the severity of the disease by 68 to 80%. Upon verifying with the Thai Red Cross Society, it was confirmed that there is currently no direct mpox vaccine. An endangered tapir previously thought to be extinct was spotted in a forest in southern Thailand. Footage shows a rare Malayan tapir roaming in the undergrowth at the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province on Aug. 18.

Thailand’s economy is nearly in crisis due to declining exports and uncompetitive manufacturing, caretaker Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said today.

No problems with cash distribution via digital wallet scheme

The Budget Bureau would have no objection if the government were to change the disbursement of the 10,000-baht financial benefit under the “digital wallet” scheme from “digital money” to cash, as long as the objective of the scheme is to stimulate the economy and the disbursement begins in September, Chalermphol Pensoot, the bureau’s director, said today.

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya River is born from mountain streams in northern Thailand, flowing hundreds of kilometers south to the sea.
