Massive Pot smuggling racket – Foreign tourists paid and sent to Thailand on holidays

Thailand has become a global center for cannabis smuggling to Europe and Britain. Policeyesterday revealed another series of arrests concerning foreigners smuggling cannabis through Chiang Mai International Airport.

The five suspects — three British men and two American women — were apprehended on Monday. In short, the couriers, who were hired by drug cartels, were smuggling cannabis bought in Thailand for Bt1.2 million but which was worth a minimum of £1.2 million on the streets of the United Kingdom. On the evening of April 14 1912, a small Canadian fishing boat, skippered by a French-Canadian captain called “Jacques-Chai”, approached the Titanic wanting to convey a very important message to Captain Edward Smith. Thai inflation still within target despite February price hikes: Ministry

The Commerce Ministry expects inflation to remain at 1.1%-1.2% in the first quarter, after rising food, fuel and electricity costs drove Thailand’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) up 1.08% in February compared to the same period last year. The ministry has maintained its inflation target for the whole year at 0.3%-1.3%.

It said the new U.S. trade policy, to be announced on April 1, is not expected to impact Thailand’s inflation rate, but it would continue to monitor the situation closely. Continued …

Number of foreign investors in first two months rises by 68%

In the first two months of 2025, 181 foreign investors were approved to invest in Thailand, marking a 68% increase, the Business Development Department (BDD) announced yesterday.

The 181 foreign firms made a combined investment of 35.277 billion baht, an increase of 8.738 billion baht, or 33%, compared to the first two months of the previous year. Continued …

In 2023, Chinese firms committed over 90 billion baht (about $2.5 billion USD) to projects in Thailand between January and August, nearly tripling the previous year’s figures for that period, with the full year reaching 159.3 billion baht.

The registration of new businesses dropped by 5% year-on-year during the first two months as operators took a cautious approach amid uncertainties, according to the Department of Business Development (DBD).

Thailand is set to reduce its visa-free stay allowance from 60 days to 30 days, a move aimed at curbing the misuse of the visa exemption for illegal business activities. The decision, agreed upon in principle by relevant authorities, is spearheaded by the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

Sorawong Thienthong, Tourism and Sports minister, stated that the Foreign Ministry has acknowledged the issue following extensive discussions with stakeholders over the past weeks. Investigation deepens into foreign-owned businesses, nominee operations in Hua Hin

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced that it is investigating foreign-owned businesses or nominee operations in key tourist areas, following concerns raised by a former member of Parliament in Phuket.

Nationwide, the ministry has conducted inspections in six key areas: Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Chonburi, Hua Hin, and Surat Thani. As a result, 40 tourism business licenses have been revoked in 2024 due to illegal changes in board members and shareholding structures. Trying to Understand the Logic of Thailand’s 10,000 Baht Handout

As a country with pronounced political polarization, Thailand is used to divisive debates in which the arguments on both sides have merit. But when it comes to the ruling Pheu Thai Party’s economic stimulus program of handing out 10,000 baht ($298) to all Thais aged 16 and older, the debate is increasingly less about whether it’s a bad idea and more about just how bad it is.

Council of State Rejects Plan to Lower Electricity Bills

The Council of State, Thailand’s primary legal advisory body, has dismissed a proposal from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) aimed at renegotiating contracts with renewable power firms to reduce electricity bills. Cabinet Set to Reject Casino Entry Rule for Thai Nationals

Thai Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has indicated that a contentious proposal regulating casino entry for Thai citizens is unlikely to win cabinet approval. Southeast Asia is responsible for nearly a quarter of global energy demand growth through 2035, but it is currently heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and hydropower. Wildfires rage across northern Thailand

The north of Thailand is grappling with a surge in wildfires, with 401 hotspots detected across 17 provinces, the Region 3 Forest Fire Control Center said. Phetchabun province has been particularly affected, registering 82 hotspots – the highest in the region – with fires spreading across almost the entire province.

The latest data released Thursday reveals the scale of the crisis. While specific data for other provinces was unavailable as of press time, Phetchabun’s 82 hotspots are of significant concern. Many Thai nationals who were once part of international scam call centers are now claiming they were tricked into it. Thai authorities recently cracked down on fraudulent call centers operating along the Thai-Myanmar border. These scam hubs had been conning people out of their hard-earned money, but when the government cut off their power supply, the scammers were left stranded and forced to return home.

The Gold Traders Assn. this morning announced buying prices for gold ornaments at 45,222.28 baht per baht weight and for gold bars at 46,050 baht per baht weight.

Smog again covers much of Thailand, PKK at orange level

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 48 out of the 76 Thai provinces, and Bangkok, today, with red levels in parts of the central plain and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported.

Forty-one provinces were shrouded with orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 38.6 to 73.3µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Thailand has signed an agreement with the entire membership of ASEAN to jointly deal with PM2.5, which is considered to be a transboundary haze. The harmful levels of PM2.5, from domestic and overseas sources, can affect the image of Thailand as an investment destination in Southeast Asia, according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

Oil prices set to fall amid trade war

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced that its subsidiary, EGCO Group, plans to invest Bt30 billion (approximately USD836 million) in 2025 to expand its electricity generation capacity by 1,000 MW.
