Authorities brace for impacts of 2024 flooding

Thai authorities are implementing measures and adjusting strategies in case the ongoing flood situation in different parts of Thailand worsens, although the Finance Minister believes it will not be as bad as the great flood of 2011.

Pichai Chunhavajira, acting deputy prime minister and finance minister, said on Monday that the floods this year should be less severe than those of 2011 in terms of economic impact. Heavy rain is forecast for northern, northeastern, central and southern provinces this week, with Sukhothai in the north at risk of major flooding from the rain-swollen Yom River.

The Meteorological Department issued a warning on Monday morning. As of Aug. 25, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has reported severe flooding across six provinces in Thailand, including Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Phetchabun, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Trapped workers in tunnel still alive, rescuers say

The three workers trapped inside a tunnel under construction as part of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway in Nakhon Ratchasima are still alive, Pak Chong district chief Kanatchon Sricharoen said on Monday.

The Chinese foreman and backhoe operator and a Myanmar dump truck driver became trapped inside the tunnel being constructed in Tambon Chan Thuek in Pak Chong district after a landslide on Saturday. Continued …

Bangkok moonshine death toll rises to 4, 28 in critical condition

The death toll from moonshine consumption in Bangkok has risen to four as of today, with 28 other victims remaining in serious condition. A further investigation into the sources of the moonshine led to the arrest of two Thai men yesterday.

The issue came to light after multiple residents in the Khlong Sam Wa, Min Buri, and Nong Chok districts of Bangkok were admitted to hospitals with high levels of acid in their blood. Baht set to rise against the dollar

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has ruled there are grounds for the allegation two senior local officials in Suphan Buri and Samut Songkram are unusually rich, with some 46 million baht of unexplained wealth between them.

In a shocking scene more suited to a horror movie, a mentally ill Thai man murdered his wife before dismembering her and scattering her body parts on a road in the Doi Luang district of the northern province of Chiang Rai in the early hours of yesterday.

Thai women’s business success belies broader gender inequality

Women in Thailand are active in the business sphere. Thai businesses have one of the highest ratios of women CEOs in the world, with 32% of senior leadership positions in Thailand held by women, compared to the global average of 27%. Almost 90% of businesses in Thailand have at least one woman in senior management.

(Editor: As someone who has “interacted” closely with elephants at one of Elephant Nature Park’s satellite locations outside Chiang Mai, we strongly disagree with this being detrimental to the elephants – depending on the sanctuary. The elephants we visited had free roam of the jungle and grasslands in their particular location. They were not penned up and, importantly, they were not ridden. If the older elephants had been mistreated years before, they weren’t now, and the young elephant we met was just a rowdy 3-year-old, with seemingly no cares in the world. Elephant Nature Park is the ideal model, and there are “sanctuaries” where elephants are not treated well. Do your homework!)

Army lawyer joins Hua Hin pub death probe

The Royal Thai Army has appointed a military lawyer to monitor a police investigation into the fatal shooting of one of its intelligence officers in an unlicensed Hua Hin bar that was open after the legal closing time. The army sargeant reportedly was shot in the back of the head.

Jakkrit Worakul, 34, is accused of shooting SM1 Rojchanaphon Rojchanapanich to death inside a pub on Soi 80, a nightlife area just off Phetkasem Road in Hua Hin. The incident also injured three others. Continued …

Thailand Open tennis returns to Hua Hin in September

The Thailand Open tennis tournament will be held next month at Arena Hua Hin, said Suwat Liptapanlop, honorary president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT).

Nine confirmed dead in Chachoengsao plane crash

A small plane carrying nine people, including passengers and crew, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff in Chachoengsao province yesterday. All on board are dead. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when officials began the grim task of recovering the wreckage in Moo 6, Ban Khao Din, Bang Pakong district.

Initially, the bodies of the passengers were nowhere to be found, sparking concern. However, it was soon discovered that the aircraft had plunged nose-first into the earth, embedding itself more than 10 meters deep in the muddy ground. Continued …

Deadly new mpox strain hits Thailand

Thailand confirmed its first case of a potentially deadlier strain of mpox, marking Asia’s first encounter with the virus variant known as Clade 1b. This development follows hot on the heels of the first reported case outside Africa, in Sweden, just a week ago.

MRTA plans rail systems in 4 provinces

Bangkok to Beijing train: Mekong River railway bridge opens

Travelers are one step closer to a train journey from Bangkok to Beijing as a new railway bridge over the Mekong River has opened, linking Thailand and Laos by rail for the first time. This milestone, completed last month, leaves just a few dozen miles of a trackless gap before the route can finally reach China.

With the launch of this new service, passengers can now enjoy a 12-hour train journey from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Station to Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. However, Khamsavath, located about 9.7 kilometers outside Vientiane, is currently the final stop on this route. Who’s in charge? Ex-PM Thaksin lays out 14-point plan to fix economy

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday proposed a 14-point strategy to improve Thailand’s sluggish economy in his first public speech since returning to Thailand after 17 years abroad. He was speaking at a dinner talk event at Siam Paragon Hall in Bangkok and attended by politicians, diplomats and investors.

“Today our economy cannot fall any lower, and we need to lift it up quickly,” the former premier said in his keynote speech. “Management of various problems has been done without leadership. The 10,000-baht handout under the digital wallet scheme would kick-off in September, with priority being given to vulnerable sections of society, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra revealed on Thursday. The Egg Duck Assn. yesterday informed its members about the new farm gate prices for duck eggs. The price per egg has been increased by 10 satang, bringing the total to 5.10 baht per egg. Changan to open Thai EV factory next March

Changan Automobile’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia is set to open in Thailand in the first quarter of next year, with a total investment budget exceeding 10 billion baht.

“We expect to start producing battery EVs in March 2025,” said Shen Xinghua, managing director of Changan Auto Southeast Asia, a subsidiary of the Chongqing-based company. Thailand was plunged into crisis on Wednesday afternoon when the Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. In effect, the move also collapsed the current coalition government.

Team Mitsubishi To Compete in Asia Cross Country Rally in Hua Hin

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. Inward immigration may be the only thing that can halt Thailand’s economic decline

As Thailand’s government launched its digital wallet scheme, and with results for the second quarter expected shortly, maybe it is time to look at the bigger picture and confront Thailand’s economic prospects. In short, the genuine likelihood is that its GDP may at some point go into decline if it fails to overcome its population crisis.

This week, an Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) study from Siam Commercial Bank suggested that Thailand is on the same road as Japan. It suggested weak growth extending until 2050. WTA’s Thailand Open stage to be held in Hua Hin Sept 18

The WTA on Friday announced two key changes to the 2024 calendar during the Asian swing later this season. The WTA 500 sanction previously held by the Zhengzhou Open will be transferred to the Ningbo Open starting in 2024, increasing its status from a WTA 250 event. The new WTA 500 Ningbo Open will take place during Week 42 of the calendar, commencing Oct. 14.

The vacant WTA 250 sanction will see a special one-year return to Hua Hin for the second staging of the Thailand Open this season, which will be held in Week 38 and begin Sept. 16. – wtatennis.com

Electricity bills to remain unchanged at 4.18 baht per unit

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) resolved on Thursday to keep the fuel tariff (FT) for electricity unchanged at 39.72 satang for September to December, which will keep electricity capped at 4.18 baht per unit.

Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, the commission’s secretary-general, said the move to keep the FT unchanged was in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on July 23 to retain the ceiling on power bills as part of the government’s bid to help ease people’s financial burdens. Continued …

Power tariff set to fall by early 2025

The power tariff, which will be capped at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) to maintain electricity prices until the end of this year, is likely to decrease early next year, as global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is thought to be decreasing, which would result in lower gas prices.

Eleven Chinese supermarkets in Bangkok were found to be selling products that do not meet legal requirements in a joint operation led by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday.

FDA representatives, together with officials from the Consumer Protection Police Division and the Health Department of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, searched 11 Chinese supermarkets in four districts of the capital, namely Samphanthawong, Lak Si, Bueng Kum, and Huay Khwang, following complaints that they might be violating safety standard and health-related laws. Chinese-owned factory fined 1.8 billion baht for waste water in reservoir

The Chachoengsao Provincial Court fined a Chinese-owned factory 1.8 billion baht for releasing wastewater into the Jone Reservoir in the central province of Chachoengsao.

THH Moly Processing Co.’s illegal action came to light in 2019 after 2 million cubic meters of water in the Jone Reservoir was contaminated with multiple toxic substances. Locals could not use the water for consumption or agriculture. Continued …

Thais ground overseas travel plans amid squeeze on spending power

Thailand’s outbound travel market is experiencing a slowdown in the second half of this year due to a decline in consumer spending power, according to Charoen Wangananont, president and board committee member of the Thai Travel Agents Assn. (TTAA).

In an interview, Charoen explained that economic uncertainties had prompted many Thais to postpone overseas travel plans to avoid additional expenses during the downturn. Thailand Eases Regulations for Coastal Hotels

The government includes “illegal hotels” in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga in the legal system and expects 2,500 more legal hotel rooms. Hotels with no more than 49 rooms do not have to carry out an environmental impact assessment (IEE).

This will allow hotels near the coast to operate legally without having to demolish or alter their buildings to comply with the new regulations, as these hotels were built before the ministerial order was announced. Continued …

Chinese Tourist Killed by Falling Tree in Chiang Mai

In a tragic accident in Chiang Mai, a Chinese tourist lost her life, and another was injured when a tree fell on them while they were ziplining. The incident occurred around noon in Village 2, Thep Sadet subdistrict, Doi Saket District. The Erawan Rescue Center swiftly dispatched emergency services to the scene.

The couple, Liu Yang, 46, and Jing Chen, 44, from China, were crossing a suspension bridge after enjoying a ziplining adventure. The body of a missing Dutch teenager was discovered on Thursday, a day after he was reported missing, on “Dragon Crest Mountain,” a popular tourist attraction on Phi Phi Islands, Krabi province.

A 10-year-old Cambodian girl who was abandoned by her parents at Pattaya beach was helped by police after local residents and tourists saw her crying Monday night. Heavy flooding forces closures in Khao Yai National Park

Heavy flooding has led to the closure of key sites in Khao Yai National Park, impacting popular tourist destinations and local communities. Takhro Falls and the Sai Yai River in Prachinburi were shut down yesterday, while Nang Rong Falls in Nakhon Nayok followed suit today.

Majority of cybercrime victims in Thailand are working-age women

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) revealed that over two-thirds of cybercrime victims are women, with most being of working age. From March 1, 2022, to June 30 this year, there were 575,507 online complaints, totaling 65.715 billion baht in damages, averaging over 80 million baht per day.

RTP deputy spokesperson Sirivat Deephor highlighted that National Police Chief Torsak Sukwimol is deeply concerned about the public’s vulnerability to various forms of crime, especially cybercrime. Thai rice exports soar in June thanks to Indonesian demand boost

Thailand’s rice exports surged in June, driven by Indonesia’s increased demand to maintain food security, Thai Rice Exporters Assn. President Charoen Laothamatas said on Tuesday.

Blue swimming crabs, once plentiful in the Ban Don Bay off the east coast of Thailand, are a crucial part of the local community’s livelihoods. Surge in investment project proposals during first half

Thailand saw a surge in investment project proposals, led by electrical appliances and electronics, during the first half of 2024, with total proposals soaring by 64% year-on-year, worth 458 billion baht, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Thailand cuts 2024 car manufacturing target to 1.7 million

Months-long sluggish car sales have caused the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to reduce its car manufacturing target for 2024 to 1.7 million units, down from 1.9 million units.

New Post-Graduate Visa for Foreign Students Implemented

Starting July 15, the Thai government has implemented the Non-Ed Plus Visa, which will allow foreign students studying bachelor’s degree level or above to extend their stay in Thailand for one year after graduation to give them time to find employment, travel, participate in other similar activities, or apply for a new type of visa once employed.
