Bangkok plus five provinces in the central region could be at risk of inundation from today to Oct. 2, the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) warned on Friday.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has officially expanded the 30-baht universal healthcare coverage scheme, allowing residents in 46 provinces to receive healthcare services at all registered clinics, pharmacies, or healthcare units, in addition to hospitals.

Thailand to legalize undocumented workers, children from four countries

FED (Foundation for Education and Development) in Thailand announced that the Thai government has allowed undocumented workers from four countries, including Myanmar, to make new registrations and accompanying children under the age of 18 to stay legally in Thailand.

For workers whose permits will expire on Feb. 13, 2025, the duration of each residence and work permit will be extended twice from two years to four years, and the period for changing jobs will be increased from one month previously to two months. Continued …

Man Dies After Attack by Mixed-Breed Stray Dogs in Ubon Ratchathani

A 49-year-old man was found dead in his home in Ubon Ratchathani after being mauled by two mixed-breed dogs. The man, whose identity has been withheld, was discovered face down in his single-story house on Wednesday, according to local police reports on Friday.

The victim had suffered severe bite wounds to his head, including torn ears, and investigators concluded that he died from excessive blood loss. Police Bus Bombing in Pattani, Four Officers Injured

A police bus convoy traveling along Route 42, between Narathiwat and Pattani was bombed yesterday afternoon, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash off the road.

The attack took place near Tabing subdistrict, in the Sai Buri District of Pattani Province. According to reports, an IED, explosive device planted along the road was detonated as the bus passed by. The device had been hidden in a water meter cabinet on the side of the road. Continued …

10,000-baht digital wallet handout expected to boost manufacturing sector

The 10,000 baht digital wallet handout scheme should give the industrial sector a 0.1% boost, the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) said on Friday. This announcement follows the first phase, in which funds are being distributed to 14.55 million state welfare cardholders and people with disabilities. The rollout kicked off on Wednesday and will continue until Monday.

Premier says Bt10,000 second phase won’t be cut

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was seemingly at odds with her deputy finance minister yesterday in response to a rumor that the government plans to scale back its 10,000-baht cash handout scheme by 50% during the second phase of its implementation next year.

Police guarding banks to stop loan sharks from grabbing 10,000-baht handout

All police stations nationwide are being alerted to guard banks where “fragile” groups of people are withdrawing 10,000 baht handouts, after finding out that loan sharks were waiting there to grab the money. A Maha Sarakham police team tightened security at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and other bank branches in this central northeastern region.

Police Col. Kraithong Chaisingh, head of Maha Sarakham city police station, said he sent a team of policemen to maintain law and order at this BAAC branch, which was crowded with farmers, and other bank branches and locations where vulnerable groups of people and the disabled are streaming in to check whether the 10,000 baht giveaway had been deposited before queuing up to withdraw money either via ATM if they have a card or wait to do so from a teller. Garbage piling up in Phuket amid tourism revival

Majority of Thais don’t intend to go off meat during annual vegetarian festival

World Bank sees $642-billion inflows for Thailand to pursue low-carbon economy

The World Bank has called on Thailand to hasten its shift toward a low-carbon economy, highlighting substantial opportunities for sustainable financial investment of US$632 billion. Thailand to introduce carbon tax to curb emissions this year

Thailand is set to implement a carbon tax this year, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul announced at the Road to Net Zero 2024: The Extraordinary Green event. The Finance Ministry plans to propose the carbon tax measure to the Cabinet for approval soon, with the goal of rolling it out in the coming months.

Thailand sees 1.9 million new electric vehicle registrations, a 13% decline

As many as 1,876,356 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered in Thailand in the first eight months of 2024, a nearly 13% drop compared to the same period last year. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) said on Friday that registrations had declined by 280,091 vehicles from the 2,156,447 in the same period last year.

The department said that despite the lower number of registered EVs in 2024, the trend of new EV registrations was still growing, especially after January. Continued …

Overflowing Ping River continues to affect downtown Chiang Mai

The flooding triggered by the overflowing of the Ping River in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district is even worse than in 2011, according to a report. The surge in the river flooded residences and commercial zones in the district on Wednesday night, including San Pa Khoi Market and the Charoen Prathet and Night Bazaar neighborhoods.

Korat faces water shortage with all its reservoirs only half full

While several provinces in the north are suffering serious flooding, especially Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeast is facing a water shortage with all of its 27 reservoirs now less than half full.

For an example, Lamtakong reservoir, which is the main source of water for Mueang, Sung Noen, Si Khio, Kham Thalae So and Chalerm Phra Kiat, now contains 92.26 million cubic meters of water, 30.6% of its capacity. Of that, only 25.2% of the water is usable. Continued … 

Roadside bomb injures eight soldiers in Narathiwat

Eight soldiers sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in Rangae district, Narathiwat, believed to be orchestrated by insurgents. The incident took place when an improvised bomb, tied to a power pole along a local road in Ban Hulu Pare, tambon Tanyongmat, was detonated as a military pickup truck carrying the soldiers drove past.

Mortgage growth forecast to plunge

Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) expects 1.2% growth in mortgages within the commercial banking sector this year, the lowest level of expansion in 23 years. The low rate is attributed to the diminished purchasing power of home buyers.

Production index projected to decline 1% in 2024

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) is likely to contract by 1% this year, given the declines recorded during the first eight months of the year, caused by a raft of economic problems and the impact of severe floods, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

As of 9pm last night, the water level in the city of Chiang Mai had risen to 4.83 meters, surpassing the 2022 flood level. Authorities expect the level to climb above 5.10 meters, exceeding the 2011 flood levels.

Reports from Chiang Mai indicate that the situation remains critical, as new floodwaters from Mae Taeng District have reached the city. The flooding has expanded, inundating major economic areas such as the Night Bazaar, San Pa Khoi Market, and parts of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, with water depths ranging from 50 to 100 cm. Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

Commerce Ministry to explore why pork prices are so high

The Commerce Ministry is inspecting pork prices nationwide in a bid to reduce expenses for Thai consumers and boost the competitiveness of producers.

Ministry spokesperson Wittayakorn Maneenetr said on Tuesday that the decision was taken after Thailand’s pork price was found to be higher than in other countries. The government has estimated the total damage from the floods in the north to be about 3 billion baht. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday that the inundation in the north caused significant damage due to flash flooding.

Pit Bull Attacks & Kills 67-Year-Old Woman Cycling in Pathum Thani

A 67-year-old woman in Pathum Thani was fatally attacked by a Pit Bull while cycling near her home in Chiang Rak Noi, Sam Khok District. The woman was found with severe bite wounds over most of her body. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

3 million to get handout funds today

The first 3 million needy and disabled people — out of a total of 14.5 million — will receive their 10,000-baht handout under the government’s digital wallet program today, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

10,000-Baht Grant for Over 30 Million People Unlikely This Year

It is unlikely that over 30 million Thai citizens will receive a 10,000-baht grant under the second phase of the Pheu Thai-led populist handout scheme this year, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated yesterday.

Out of approximately 45 million Thais, around 14.5 million will start receiving the funds through their state welfare cards today, with the remaining 30 million expected to wait until next year, according to Julapun. Thailand’s vehicle production, sales plummet over 20% in August

The manufacturing and sales of vehicles in Thailand fell by more than 20% in August compared to the same period last year, stats from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) show.

Mechanic Crushed to Death by Truck in Cha Am

An incident claimed the life of a 28-year-old truck mechanic yesterday while he was repairing the undercarriage of a 10-wheeler truck. The incident occurred at a truck repair shop along the Cha Am-Pranburi bypass, heading toward Bangkok.

According to police reports, the mechanic had finished replacing parts under the truck and was preparing to reattach the rear wheels. A Life Changing Move to Rural Thailand

Charissa Enget needed to find an engineering course she could afford. She found one in rural Thailand, where she got a scholarship and living costs were low. It took her six months to learn the language so she could communicate with fellow students, make friends, and travel round the country at weekends.

“I think living abroad is a lot different from traveling abroad, just because you really get to know the people and experience the culture, and it changes your way of thinking a lot more. Thailand changed the way I interact with people in a lot of ways, and I feel bonded to Thailand for the rest of my life. It really changed the way I want to live my life, and I’ll never stop loving Thailand or traveling back there as much as I can.”

Tropical storm Soulik to hit Thailand with heavy rain for 5 days

Tropical storm Soulik over central Vietnam is forecast to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rain to several parts of Thailand for the next five days, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

The department said that the storm developed from a tropical depression and was centered about 90 kilometers southeast of the Quang Tri coast with sustained winds of about 65 kilometers per hour. Continued …

Flooding persists in six provinces

Floods remain in six provinces in the north, the northeast, the Central Plains and the south, affecting more than 33,000 families.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported on Thursday that flooding continued in Chiang Rai and Phitsanulok provinces in the north; Nong Khai and Bueng Kan in the northeast; Ayutthaya in the Central Plains; and Satun in the south. Bangkok Restricts Street Vending to Low-Income Thais

Condo group calls for looser real estate lending rules

The government is advised to ease lending restrictions and reduce interest rates as newly completed condo units worth more than 86 billion baht are awaiting transfer in the fourth quarter, which could lift both the property sector and the entire economy, says the Thai Condominium Assn.

FTI proposes corporate tax exemption for businesses affected by flooding

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has proposed to the government that it make an exemption from paying corporate income tax, extends the period for the submission of tax returns and exempts import tariffs on machinery for businesses hardest hit by the flooding.

FTI President Kriangkrai Thiennukul said the industrial confidence index for August was 87.7, which was lower than the preceding month, due mainly to a slowdown in demand, particularly for durable goods like automobiles. Continued …

The government of Thailand announced a borrowing plan of 2.59 trillion baht for the 2025 fiscal year, assuring that this will not hinder the private sector’s fundraising efforts, a Ministry of Finance official stated yesterday.

A depression is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm today, land in Vietnam and cause heavy downpours across Thailand until Monday, according to the Meteorological Department.

Flood warnings issued for northeastern provinces

Authorities are closely monitoring water levels along the Mekong River, particularly in Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, as rising waters threaten low-lying areas.

As of Tuesday, water levels in Nakhon Phanom reached 11.82 meters, just 0.18 meters below the critical level of 12 meters, sparking concerns for communities along the riverbanks. Thailand has proposed a new bill to regulate its cannabis industry and restrict marijuana uses to primarily health and medical purposes, the latest effort to rein in recreational smoking after several policy u-turns.

Bank of Thailand boss: current economic thinking only benefits large Thai business concerns

Thailand’s central bank boss continues to be at odds with the Pheu Thai-led government. Again this week, he has been openly criticized by a senior cabinet minister. Undoubtedly, there is now a widening difference of thinking between Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput and his political colleagues on how the Thai economy should be managed.

Sethaput’s disillusionment with the current government’s model for economic growth was on full display recently in a speech he gave to an audience in Bangkok. The central bank boss noted that while the Thai economy grew by nearly 30% in 10 years, in a similar period, Thai household debt has mushroomed. Navy rescues 130 tourists stranded on an island off Phuket

About 130 Thai and foreign tourists, mostly Chinese, were safely rescued yesterday after they became stranded on Racha Yai Island, off Phuket, due to rough seas and strong winds, making it impossible for the tourist speed boats to pick them up.

Alerted by a call for help, the Royal Thai Navy sent a coastal patrol vessel to the island to take the stranded tourists back to the shore of Phuket. A naval officer said that the rescue mission was hampered by rough seas, but all the tourists were safely rescued. Continued …

Thailand’s energy-related CO2 emissions down 2.5% in first half of 2024

Thailand’s carbon dioxide emissions from energy usage from January to June stood at 121.9 million tons, down 2.5% year on year (YoY), the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) reported on Wednesday. The office said electricity generation emitted the most CO2 at 48.1 million tons, increasing 5.8% YoY.

Thailand’s northern regions are reeling from the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi, which brought relentless rains, leading to deadly floods and landslides. As of now, six people have been confirmed dead, including four in Chiang Mai and two in Chiang Rai, while two others remain missing.

Famous Tham Luang cave faces worst flooding in 13 years

Mae Sai district’s most famous cave, Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non, is currently facing its worst flooding in 13 years, after the mountain range was lashed by torrential rain, measured at 263mm yesterday alone.

British cave explorer Vernon Unsworth, who has been living in Mae Sai district with his Thai wife for more than a decade, inspected the cave and said that the water rushing out of the cave’s entrance is stronger than a waterfall, indicating that all the chambers in the cave are now flooded. Massive amounts of support reaches flood victims in Chiang Rai

Manpower, equipment and relief supplies from various sources have been arriving in Chiang Rai province to help flood victims, many of whom remain stranded in their homes by the worst flooding for three decades.

Runoff water from a mountain range in Myanmar’ Shan state and from watershed areas is yet to reach the Sai and Ruak rivers. Satellite images, provided by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), show 767 hectares on the Myanmar border under water, while nearly a thousand hectares in Mae Sai district are flooded. Water-borne diseases on the rise as flooding continues

Thailand is seeing increasing cases of diseases caused by flooding, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Wednesday, urging the public to avoid wading through floodwater and mud.

Cases of rat fever (leptospirosis), a blood infection caused by the bacteria leptospira that can infect humans, rodents and other animals, has exceeded 2,600 patients this year, with 28 deaths so far, Dr. Wirawat Manosutthi, the DDC spokesman, said. Continued …

The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) today warned residents in 48 provinces of flash floods and water runoff due to heavy rains brought by the monsoon trough over the upper country from Friday to Wednesday (Sept. 13-18).

The office also predicted that water levels in the Mekong River would rise by 0.5 to 1 meter from today to Wednesday due to heavy rains in the north, the upper northeast, and Laos. Hotel bookings in Thailand are expected to exceed pre-Covid levels this year as domestic tourism surges, according to Krungthai Compass, the research unit of Krungthai Bank.

Tourists in the mid-priced and budget segments remain sensitive to prices, meaning hotels rated less than four stars struggled to maintain their room and occupancy rates in August.
