Songkran festival sees surge in road accidents across Thailand

Thailand is grappling with a surge in road accidents, with an alarming tally of 2,044 mishaps leading to 2,060 injuries and a tragic loss of 287 lives. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) released these figures as part of their Seven Days of Road Safety Campaign, which covered the Songkran festival period from April 11 to April 17.

The northern province of Chiang Rai topped the list for the highest number of fatalities and accidents, recording 17 deaths and 82 accidents, respectively. The province of Phrae unfortunately, saw the most injuries with a total of 80 individuals affected. Continued …

The Cabinet on Thursday approved the budget bill for fiscal 2025, with government spending totaling 3.752 trillion baht, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said. The bill has allocated 3.752 trillion baht for government spending in fiscal 2025, which begins on Oct. 1.

Bangkok Bank subsidiaries saw an 18.7% profit increase in the first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year to Bt10,524 billion, with net interest income affected by rising deposit rates.

Thai and Taiwanese firms join to build medical products plant

Aiming to capitalize on the government’s initiative to make Thailand a medical hub in Southeast Asia, Thai firm Namwiwat Medical Corp. (NAM) and Taiwanese company Somnics Inc. have joined forces to construct a new manufacturing plant. The facility, intended to serve as an export base, will produce a wide range of medical products, including sleep-enhancing devices.

NAM, a local sterilized medical equipment provider, and Somnics, a Zhubei-based firm specializing in obstructive sleep apnea treatment technologies, formalized their collaboration with a memorandum of understanding signed recently. As the extended Songkran holiday wrapped up on Tuesday, tourists bid farewell to the sun-kissed islands surrounding Pattaya, turning the Bali Hai Pier area into a buzzing hub of activity. Local authorities ramped up services to cater to the influx, ensuring convenience for visitors throughout the holiday period.

Officers stationed at the pier witnessed an influx of tourists from April 12 to 15, with an average of 30,000 Thai visitors and foreign tourists per day seeking leisure and relaxation on the islands. To me, the most awe-inspiring moment is watching the sunrise at Hua Hin beach. As the first light of dawn slowly seeps into the sky, life comes to a standstill. The sun soon emerges from behind the horizon, casting its warm and vibrant glow over the beach. The fishing boats in the distance begin to set out for the day’s first catch, and the silhouettes of Monkey Mountain and the Buddha statue are bathed in golden hues. The ocean, playing its role in the spectacle, provides the perfect soundtrack with the gentle rhythm of waves kissing the sand. Continued …

The Hua Hin municipality commemorated the legendary Thai boxer Pone Kingpetch on the 64th anniversary of his historic world title win with a series of events yesterday honoring his contributions to the sport and his enduring legacy in the community.

Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Digital wallet ‘super app’ to link with bank apps

Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. 162 killed in Songkran road accidents so far

Songkran’s notorious “seven dangerous days” have, as of Sunday, seen 1,259 traffic accidents, with 162 people killed and 1,279 injured. On Sunday, 317 accidents were reported, with 38 fatalities and 311 injuries.

The assistant national police chief said on Monday that many people have started making their way back to Bangkok and other big cities, opening the door to more accidents and heavy traffic. When the water guns are filled and people don colorful floral printed shirts, you know it’s Songkran time. Also known as the water festival, Songkran takes pride of place among Thai festivals, as the mostly widely celebrated, the most famous, and undoubtedly the most entertaining.

But Songkran is not without its share of controversies. A survey by Suan Dusit Poll in March, found that 32.4% out of 4,011 Bangkok residents in the past three years had been sexually harassed; 57.8% of the sample group were touched on the face with chalk powder; and 14.2% did not join the water fights because they were afraid of being harassed sexually (or had experienced that and decided to stop going). Marine waste project removes more than 400,000kg of plastic from ocean

The Department of Fisheries’ efforts to eliminate plastic waste in the ocean have yielded impressive results, with more than 400,000 kilograms of waste removed from Thai waters, which can be recycled into marketable products like clothes.

Water rationing! No water 10:30am-5:00am

The Waterworks Department of Hua Hin Municipality has announced that water supply will be rationed effective immediately, a measure that highlights the severity of the ongoing water shortage affecting the area.

(Editor: Apparently, “immediately” does not mean today, but be prepared for water shutoff tomorrow.)

Residents will have access to public water only between the hours of 5am and 10:30am until further notice, following days of disrupted service across the city. Continued …

Scorching heat and air pollution are driving sales of air conditioners and air purifiers this year in Thailand. The steady growth of the local real estate market is another factor contributing to the industry expansion.

Varut Lekajirakul, assistant general manager of marketing at Siam Daikin Sales Co., the local distributor of Daikin air conditioners, said sweltering temperatures could drive the air conditioner market to exceed 30 billion baht this year, 20% growth from 2023. Continued … 

Mercury to rise in most parts of Thailand after Songkran

The entire northeastern region of Thailand is expected to see the mercury rise even further after Songkran and until the first week of May, a leading climate expert warned on Sunday.

Fighting obesity: 47% of Thais overweight

Obesity is a major public health problem, both internationally and in Thailand. In 2022, according to the World Health Organization, 1 in 8 people in the world were living with obesity. Between 1990 and 2022, the obesity rate more than doubled among adults and quadrupled among children and adolescents worldwide.

In Thailand, obesity is continuing to rise. A study in 2022 revealed the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the country had reached 47.8%, increasing from 34.7% in 2016. Incentives planned to boost sales of property priced at over Bt3 million

The Ministry of Finance will next week propose measures to boost the property sector to the Cabinet, hoping to see a nearly 800 billion baht sales boost and a 1.58% contribution to GDP expansion, a news source said on Friday.

One of the measures was to expand the criteria of the government’s incentive to reduce the property transfer fee from 2% to 1% and mortgage fee from 1% to 0.01%, to cover property priced up to 7 million baht, the source said. Following an investigation, it was revealed that foreigners had illegally entered Thailand to work or conduct business by using nominees. Officers from Provincial Police Region 8, searched suspicious places alongside members of the Phuket Provincial Administration, Commerce Department, Tourist Police, and Phuket Immigration Police.

‘Chinese products unlikely to affected’ by Thai 7% VAT on online imports

The Thai government’s decision to levy a 7% value-added tax (VAT) on goods imported online worth one baht or more beginning in May would not affect e-commerce products from China, Narongsak Putthapornmongkol, president of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said on Friday. Thailand had been exempting VAT for online imported goods priced at less than 1,500 baht per parcel.

Narongsak said that the 7% tax was reasonable and would not affect customers’ decision, as Chinese products sold via online channels already have affordable prices. Continued …

PM Srettha greenlights cruise ship terminal project on Samui Island

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin gave his approval today to a cruise ship terminal project on Samui Island, which will be able to accommodate up to 120 cruise ships annually and generate about eight billion baht in revenue.

30,000+ people in Chiang Mai treated for PM2.5-related diseases in 3 months

More than 30,000 people in Chiang Mai have received medical treatment at Nakhon Chiang Mai Maharaj Hospital for diseases related to PM2.5 air pollution during the first three months of this year, according to the Faculty of Medicine of Chiang Mai University.

According to the faculty, 30,339 patients were treated for PM2.5-related diseases, including allergies, eye infections, asthma, emphysema, nose bleeds and allergic rhinitis, compared to 12,671 patients in the same period last year. Continued …

Pilot describes severity of smoke problem from forest fires in Chiang Mai

A pilot for Thai Airways International has given his perspective of the severity of the PM2.5 dust and smoke problem in Chiang Mai province. On Saturday, the pilot posted online that he landed his aircraft at Chiang Mai airport at about 9am and, as soon as the door of the plane was opened, the first thing that struck his nostrils was the smell of smoke.

He wrote that visibility was reduced to about two kilometers, he only saw the runway at a height of 200 feet and the Doi Suthep mountain was totally shrouded in smoke. Continued …

Cadmium residue reported missing from a factory in Samut Sakhon province has been recovered, and a foreigner has been arrested, officials said on Saturday after inspecting a factory.

Diesel price increasing by 50 satang

Pump prices of diesel will increase by 50 satang a liter today morning amid rising concern about the cost of subsidizing the fuel, said Wisak Watanasap, director of the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO). The new price of diesel B7, B10 and B20 will be 30.44 baht per liter.

Premium diesel will cost 42.44 baht, according to announcements issued on Friday evening by the country’s two largest fuel retailers, PTT Oil and Retail Business and Bangchak Corp. Continued …

As part of a move to bolster Hua Hin’s water supply, local officials gathered at the Hua Hin Municipal Office on April 1 to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at increasing the volume of raw water available for tap water production.

Top industry body predicts frugal Songkran celebrations by the public

Thailand can expect an extremely crowded 2024 Songkran festival, but spending will not be as high as expected, according to the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB).

Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said that this year’s Songkran festival would witness a big increase in the number of Thai and foreign tourists nationwide. 25% jump in foreign condo purchases in 2023

Foreigners spent more than 73.16 billion baht to buy a total of 14,449 condominium units in Thailand in 2023, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Wednesday.

Hua Hin’s new downtown food court is a delight

Expat News finally made a visit to Hua Hin’s newest food court, located in the middle of downtown. We were pleasantly surprised.

“The Patio” is hidden down a narrow alley directly across the street from the clock tower. A small blue sign is all that marks the spot. Developers have remade a hollowed-out space within the surrounding buildings, only a short walk through alleys or Phetkasem Road to the touristy Night Market.

Care evidently was taken in selecting food vendors, as there was a wide variety of choices, and not many duplicate vendors. Whole, salted tilapia, baked potatoes with the trimmings, meat and seafood kabobs, a variety of Thai dishes, and even pizza are available, but hardly the end of the offerings. There is also a full bar and live entertainment.

One might expect the prices to mirror the outrageous prices of the Night Market or the Cicada market, but prices at The Patio were much lower, although higher than other food courts where the rent is probably much lower. There is plenty of seating in the open air environment, and even with the crowd we saw that night, the vibe was quiet and friendly.

Public Songkran events in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is gearing up for a vibrant and larger-than-ever Songkran festival, which will take place between April 11-13. Songkran is, of course, the traditional Thai New Year, originally observed as a three-day national holiday from April 13 to 15.

The traditional activities are the pouring of scented water onto sacred Buddha images and the palms of one’s parents, as well as the famous water-splashing activity. But for many people, and in many parts of the country, Songkran means three days of water fights. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was slammed by netizens after saying that the liberal cannabis policy had caused huge damage to the Thai people, with this outstripping any economic benefit.

Srettha, who mentioned this during an interview on a possible policy to relist cannabis as a category 5 narcotic, was sternly ticked off by some online users for allegedly not understanding the regulations and the network that is calling for the issuance of a cannabis bill to amend the current law, because large amounts are being smuggled in from neighboring countries, which is negatively affecting pharmacists and villagers who are using the plant for medical purpose. World Bank cuts Thai growth to 2.8% on weaker exports

Thailand’s economic growth is expected at 2.8% this year before accelerating to 3.0% in 2025, the World Bank said on Monday, on account of weak exports and a delayed budget.

Newly merged True Corp eyes wider market share

Telecom giant True Corp. is hoping to capture 65% of the market through its latest collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The main focus of the expansion will be selling SIM cards and roaming services to foreigners, True Corp.’s CEO Manat Manavutiveth said on Monday.

More than 9 million foreign tourists recorded in first quarter

Thailand welcomed 9,370,297 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and March 31, a 44% jump year on year, the Tourism and Sports Ministry reported on Monday. These visitors have generated tourism income of around 454.65 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs, it added.

Passenger charges rise at six major Thai airports

Passenger service charges (PSC) at six major Thai airports have seen an increase, as announced by the Airports of Thailand. The charges, applicable on both domestic and international departing flights, have been raised at Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Phuket and Suvarnabhumi airports.

Dangerously thick smog intensifies, expands

Red-coded levels of PM2.5 dust have increased and expanded from the north into parts of the central plain and the northeast, with the worst levels in Chiang Mai, this morning.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that 21 provinces faced red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Hua Hin discusses ways to combat drought season water shortage

In response to the looming water shortage during the hot season, officials at Hua Hin Municipality met on Friday to discuss ways to maintain an adequate water supply.

The meeting was aimed at addressing the possible water shortage that is anticipated from April to June. One of the main solutions discussed involved leveraging raw water from the Phetchaburi Dam, a strategy made possible by the completion of a pipeline in 2023. Continued …

79 confirmed Covid cases at PKK prison

The Covid-19 situation at Prachuap Khiri Khan prison is set to be managed by an imminent emergency operations center (EOC), following the identification of infection clusters. This development comes as the public health permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, reported intensified surveillance in the wake of 79 confirmed Covid cases at the prison.

The first infection was detected on March 27 after a 35-year-old female inmate exhibiting influenza-like symptoms tested positive for Covid upon her admission to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. Road safety concerns during Songkran addressed

Officials have met in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province to discuss ways to reduce the rates of road incidents during one of Thailand’s most celebrated holidays.

The officials noted that accidents tend to occur more frequently on secondary roads. Consequently, the decision was made to reallocate resources from main roads to enhance safety measures on these less-monitored paths. More than 80 tigers that were rescued from a temple in Thailand have died from a viral disease, according to local media reports.

The Buddhist temple – Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua, known as Tiger Temple, in Kanchanaburi province, west of Bangkok – was a tourist attraction where visitors took selfies with tigers and bottle-fed cubs. Phuket rescue team kept busy with surge in reptile sightings

Rescue workers at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation branch in Wichit Municipality, Phuket, have been kept busy with a surge in reptile sightings. Even before the onset of the rainy season the task of managing the movement of these creatures has become a daily routine.

Yesterday, a massive python and a baby monitor lizard were captured in Soi Thepanusorn. The first call for assistance came early, at 9am, when a small monitor lizard had managed to sneak into a local’s house in Moo 4, Wichit. Applications for factory licenses surge

With requests for the setting up of new factories expected to exceed 250 billion baht in the first half of fiscal 2024, the Department of Industrial Works has introduced an online system for factory licensing, aiming to create confidence, transparency, and efficiency to facilitate investors.

World’s worst smog chokes northern Thailand

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am that 14 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.9 to 173.6 micrograms per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours.
