Baht likely to face near-term volatility

The baht is likely to be volatile in the near term, pending clear signs from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) concerning interest rate cuts, with the Thai currency expected to slide to 37.25 baht to the dollar within 1-3 months, bouncing back to 36 to the greenback by year end, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

The baht edged down in line with other regional currencies to 36.8 to the dollar Monday morning, compared to Friday’s close of 36.72, as the greenback rebounded slightly ahead of the release in the U.S. of April’s consumer price index and producer price index later in the week, said Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of the research, banking and financial sector at the think tank. Wildlife officers help baby elephant stuck in mud

Thailand wildlife officers rescued a baby elephant that was stuck in mud as they patrolled a forest for poachers last week. Rangers discovered the three-year-old animal while conducting searches at Thap Lan National Park in Prachinburi province.

They dug around the hole and laid down thin branches to create an angled pathway for the elephant to climb. The rangers were unsuccessful so returned the next day with more equipment, but the elephant had gone and adult footprints were found in the area. Despite record-high prices, Thailand’s gold demand remains strong, with bar and coin investment showing robust growth in contrast to declining demand for gold jewelry, according to the World Gold Council (WGC) first-quarter Gold Demand Trends Report.

A bus driver died and 29 passengers, both Thai and international, were injured- with two sustaining serious injuries- following a bus crash on Tuesday night. The tour bus was en route from Chiang Mai to Bangkok when it lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree.

Households spend most on travel, petrol, phone bills

Thai household spending on consumer goods in April averaged 18,187 baht, with the biggest expenses being on public transport, petrol and mobile phones, according to a Commerce Ministry survey.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. Thailand records nearly 12 million tourists in first four months

Thailand recorded 11.95 million foreign tourist arrivals from the January to April 28 period, its tourism ministry said on Tuesday.

Thailand’s Airports of Thailand (AOT) is investing $4.8 billion in significant expansions at major airports Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. This move is to prepare for a predicted increase in tourism.

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province will experience vast growth with the addition of two runways and a terminal, plus extending the existing terminal. The rules are second nature to chef Weerawat “Num” Triyasenawat and second-generation forager Chimphan “Auntie Noi” Sripha, who regularly collect ingredients from the forests of Thailand’s northeastern Isan region. After dusting their haul with potato starch, which repels swarming ants, they calmly count their bounty and taste a couple of plump eggs, which burst in the mouth with the flavor of fresh milk.

Thailand is grappling with a significant drop in water levels in the Lam Takhong Reservoir and Lam Mun River, possibly leading to water shortages. With the reservoir containing just 35.4% of its capacity, water scarcity is becoming a stark reality due to drought and high heat.

The ongoing drought in Thailand’s Buriram province has resulted in a severe water shortage, forcing about 300 households across three villages in the Mueang district to buy water. The crisis is due to the drying up of groundwater sources, which the villages have traditionally relied on, as they don’t have access to local water pipelines.

The villages of old and new Ban Nong Makhuea, and Ban Nong Hua Ling, despite being near the Huai Jorakhe Mak reservoir, which serves the Mueang district, have no direct access to its water. EEC prepares for water shortages

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

There are 41 industrial estates housing 6,000 factories in the EEC, which covers parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao. Their demand for water stands at 1.5 million cubic meters a day. Continued …

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day. After enduring severe drought, residents of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province may finally see significant rainfall, as the dry season is expected to end soon. Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.

People urged to avoid outdoors as Thailand braces for another hot day

Residents of Thailand are advised to avoid staying outdoors for extended periods and to monitor the health of those in vulnerable groups, as most of the country is forecast to experience a hot to a very hot day today, the Thailand Meteorological Department said.

Lower power bills if PTT pays fines

British Tourist Duped by Nonexistent Hotel on Thai Island

A British tourist, Glen Parke, has been ensnared in a hotel scam while on holiday in Thailand. Parke booked a 59-night stay at the apparent Lek Lek Residence on Koh Samui through Booking.com, paying £282 (around 13,000 baht).

On arrival, he found that the supposed one-bedroom house was, in fact, just a small roadside shop. Parke had to hastily arrange alternative accommodations, spending £3,044. However, due to high demand, Parke had to shift to a third hotel, costing him an additional £3,579. Continued …
