Prachuap Khiri Khan records lowest English proficiency in Thailand

In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) reported yesterday, Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. With a score of just 299, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s proficiency level is markedly lower than other provinces, such as Chiang Mai, which top-scored with 464, followed by Bangkok (457), Phuket (456), and Songkhla (437). – HHT

Thai investigators crack down on Makro for shady swine supplies

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) raided Makro, a popular cash-and-carry store warehouse in Thailand after discovering the store ordered illegal pork products from a company previously indicted for illicit imports.

DSI Director Suriya Singhakamon said officers conducted a raid on Wealthy & Healthy Foods, which illegally imported pork into Thailand, and discovered that the company supplied some frozen pork and pork livers to a cash-and-carry store called Siam Makro. Continued …

Lantern blamed for burning Chiang Mai market

A fire broke out at nine buildings within Rim Ping Flower Market in the northern province of Chiang Mai at 3am yesterday. A witness claimed the blaze was triggered when a lantern from the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival fell onto the buildings.

According to initial investigations, approximately 1,400 square meters were affected, including nine buildings in the market and some parts of nearby buildings. These include residential buildings, a Chinese shrine and the Thailand Post Museum. Continued …

Temperature to rise in Thailand as cold air pressure decreases

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reports a decrease in cold air pressure, resulting in a rise in temperature by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius. Southern regions are experiencing heavy rainfall, with eight provinces affected as of 5am today.

Nearly 640,000 krathongs, mostly biodegradable, floated in Bangkok

As many as 639,828 krathongs were floated on Bangkok’s myriad canals for Loy Krathong this year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday.

Statistics gathered by the BMA’s Environment Department revealed that the number of krathongs floated on Bangkok canals this year increased by 11% compared to 572,602 last year. Continued …

Cabinet green-lights 4am extended hours for tourist hotspots

Thailand on target to meet 25 million visitors in 2023

A total of 24,081,613 foreign tourists entered Thailand between Jan. 1 and Nov. 25 this year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced on Tuesday, adding foreign arrivals in November alone amounted to 100,059 people.

Doubts over Thai target of 8.2 million Chinese visitors in 2024

Analysts have expressed doubts over the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) ambitious target of attracting 8.2 million Chinese visitors next year. This comes as predictions for overall foreign arrivals next year have been down-scaled, amid concerns over a sluggish global economy.

Kasem Prunratanamala, who leads research at CGS-CIMB Securities in Thailand, stated that while the firm has kept its estimation of 27 million arrivals for this year, the prediction for next year has been reduced from 36 million to 32 million. TAT says Chinese airlines just returned extra time slots, did not cancel flights

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s governor said on Tuesday that Chinese airlines simply chose to return the extra time slots allocated to them.

If you look closely, you can just about see the characters and scenes that once stretched across the walls of Wat Prasat, a temple in Nonthaburi. Levels of PM2.5 air pollution rose above the safe standard in 34 of Bangkok’s 50 districts on Wednesday.

Loei province cracks down on illegal burning to combat toxic smog

The province of Loei issued a stern prohibition on illegal burning in a bid to mitigate the toxic smog crisis. Phuket officials accused of extorting Thai women and their foreign husbands

Cabinet approves THB3.48-trillion budget for fiscal year 2024

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the fiscal year 2024 budget of 3.48 trillion baht. The budget represents an increase of 9.3% over the 3.185 trillion baht in the previous fiscal year.

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. 126 Thai companies blacklisted for labor rights violations

Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” today through Sunday. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

The schedule:

November 18: 8:30 am – Opening ceremony; 9 am – Commencement of the long boat races; 7:30 pm – Performance by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. 8 pm – Performance by artist Tom Dundee.

November 19: 9 am – Semifinals and finals for all boat categories. 3 pm – Presentation of the royal trophy and other awards to competition winners. 4 pm – Closing ceremony.

Earth deity inspires Miss Universe Thailand’s costume

Thai-Danish beauty queen Anntonia Porsild looked stunning in an eye-catching national costume as she competed in the 72nd Miss Universe 2023 pageant being held in San Salvador, El Salvador. The national costume for this year is called “Ayutthaya Kingdom’s Goddess”, and was inspired by the statue of Phra Mae Thorani, the earth deity in Buddhist mythology. Thais believe Phra Mae Thorani brings prosperity to the land and dispels evil. Anntonia, 26, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2023 in August and has gone on to represent Thailand in the international pageant this week, competing against representatives from over 80 countries. Meteor shower to light up Thai skies tonight

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) said on Thursday that people should keep an eye out for the Leonid meteor shower that will light up the eastern skies from after midnight tolnight to early Saturday morning.

The issuance of permits for individuals to carry firearms in public has been suspended nationwide to ensure people’s safety, as instructed by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Interior Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern said on Thursday.

Long boat racing returns to Kao Tao this weekend

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” between Nov. 17-19. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

This competition is organized by Hua Hin municipality, the Thai PBS television station and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth).

The schedule:

November 18: 8:30 am – Opening ceremony; 9 am – Commencement of the long boat races; 7:30 pm – Performance by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. 8 pm – Performance by artist Tom Dundee.

November 19: 9 am – Semifinals and finals for all boat categories. 3 pm – Presentation of the royal trophy and other awards to competition winners. 4 pm – Closing ceremony.

Thailand’s Press Freedom Under Threat

It was disappointing to see that Thai PBS decided to take down its interview with Taiwan’s foreign minister, Joseph Wu, due to comments from the Chinese embassy in Bangkok. However, it is understandable given that they are government-run.

Still, the government should not dance to every tune played by the Chinese government. Thailand is not one of China’s provinces, and the government needs to stop treating the country as such merely for economic gains from China’s investments and tourists. Continued …

Officials Propose To Ban All Thais Fom Carrying Guns

Despite the government’s efforts to take strict measures to control gun violence following the shooting of a 17-year-old at Paragon in October, there have been at least two other incidents in Bangkok recently.

The first incident occurred on Saturday, when a group of teenagers were involved in a shootout in which Maria Sirada Sinprasert, also known as “Teacher Jeab” who teaches computer skills at Sacred Heart Convent School, was accidentally shot. She was shot in front of TMB Thanachart Bank, Khlong Toey Branch, Sunthorn Kesa Road. She later died in hospital. Continued …

Thailand’s railway through to Chiang Rai to open in 2028

Chiang Rai will have a new rail route winding past lush mountains, beautiful bridges, tunnels and even breaking through the morning mist. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT)’s Gov. Nirut Maneephan said this will probably be the most romantic route in Thailand.

The 323-kilometer-long railway is set to run through four provinces in the north of Thailand – Phrae, Lampang, Phayao and Chiang Rai – and will have 26 stations. Continued …

Food of the Future: ‘Grasshoppers Are More Valuable than Caviar’

Srisuphun Srikhot tucks a bunch of banana leaves under her arm in the village of Ban Hai in eastern Thailand and throws it into the enclosure with the grasshoppers. They’re always hungry, the farmer’s wife says, as she adds a handful of Napier grass to provide the nutrients the animals need to grow quickly.

The grasshoppers are just 35 days old, but they are already quite fat and measure one and a half times the length of a thumb. They’re packed together in two enclosures attached to bamboo poles, each about three square meters (32 square feet) in size. Continued …

Government economic policy clashes with Bank of Thailand’s efforts to rein in debt

The danger of a credit downgrade for Thailand is growing, as private sector debt continues to creep up, and even with interest rates at only 2.5%, the effects on the economy are already significant, with the property market down by over 14%, with up to 20% fewer properties sold.

THB10,000 handout may face legal roadblocks

The government’s digital money handout will not be implemented until the legal process for the project has been finalized, says Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

Salaries set to rise 5% next year

The salaries of employees in Thailand are expected to increase by 5% next year, which is less than the average of 5.2% within Asia, according to the latest survey by Mercer (Thailand), a US-based consulting firm on human resources. In 2023, salaries domestically rose by 4.8%.

Tourism authorities eye 60-day visa exemption for Europeans

The Tourism and Sports Ministry is planning to propose to the Cabinet that the visa exemption period for visitors from over 50 countries be extended from 30 days to 60 days.

Thai Government Plans to Establish Clean Drinking Tap Water

Anutin Charnvirakul, deputy prime minister, has delegated that both Thai metropolitan and regional officials authorized that electric or water bill payments could be postponed for 3 months if the electric or water bills were less than 300 and 150 baht each month, respectively.

Dengue fever infections increase by about 300% this year

The number of dengue fever patients in Thailand recorded between Jan. 1 and Nov. 1 was more than 123,000, which is an increase of nearly 300% compared to last year.

The environmental damage done by one of Thailand’s most colorful festivals, Loy Krathong, has grown so high that many netizens want people to stop floating their krathong in natural waterways. Millions of the floats, often made from plastic foam and other nonbiodegradable materials, are floated on the day of the festival each year.

Electricity tariffs: Potential 6 baht/unit increase expected next year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed three options for determining electricity tariffs for the first quarter of next year. The electricity tariffs could potentially increase to a peak of 6 baht per unit. The ERC disclosed that if there are proposals lower than these three options, it would have to reconvene for further discussions today.

The board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) voted on Friday evening to approve the takeover of the broadband internet service provider Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by Advanced Info Service (AIS).

Isolated thundershowers are forecast for the lower northeast, the east, the lower central and south regions of Thailand today, while isolated heavy rains are likely in the south.

Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

According to Thailand’s color-coded air-pollution-warning system, green means moderate or no risk at all; yellow means the air is unhealthy for those suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children and the elderly urged to limit time spent outdoors; orange means it’s unhealthy for all; and red means hazardous. A warning has been issued to fans of barbeque and tabletop grilled pork to limit their consumption to no more than once a month. Additionally, they are advised to always consume organic vegetables.

Thai Anti-Trafficking In Persons (ATP) officers confiscated E-cigarettes, E-liquids, and other equipment, a total of 60,500 units worth over 10 million Baht, at a private distribution center in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.
