Thailand ranks in top 10 countries for low expat living costs

Thailand is among the top 10 countries with the lowest living costs for expats, according to the latest study published by expat network InterNations.

The Land of Smiles ranks eighth globally and fourth in Southeast Asia thanks to its affordable housing and utilities, according to “Personal Finance Index 2024”. The index also revealed that expats also find it fairly simple to rent property in Thailand. Continued …

Fang oilfield in Chiang Mai, the oldest oilfield in Thailand, is to be redeveloped at a cost of 300 million baht, according to the Defense Energy Department’s Northern Petroleum Development Center (NPDC).

Cash handouts: Boon or bane for Thailand’s long-term growth?

Economic experts recently warned that the government’s cash handout policies, aimed at lifting people above the poverty line, could negatively impact Thailand’s financial status in the long term.

Thailand has remained at the “developing” country level since it was rated by the World Bank in 1988. The country’s GDP per capita, a key development indicator, sits at around US$6,900 or 230,000 baht – more than 50% less than the $15,000 or 500,000 baht per annum required to achieve high-income status. Budget for digital wallet scheme reduced to Bt450 billion

The government will scale down the budget for the digital wallet scheme from 500 billion baht to 450 billion and will drop the plan to use 170 billion baht from the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

People who receive the government’s 10,000-baht handout will not be able to use the digital cash to buy mobile phones, electrical appliances or electronic devices, authorities said on Wednesday.

Thailand’s economic outlook remains volatile due to domestic and global factors. In Q1 2024, the economy grew slowly at 1.5% year-on-year (yoy), or 1.1% quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted (qoq, sa).

The Thai Electric Vehicle Assn. (EVAT) is urging manufacturers of electric vehicles (EVs) in Thailand to prepare for oversupply in the next few years due to the production requirement under the EV 3.0 policy.

The policy offers import tax exemption for EV makers, as well as other subsidies, but mandates them to produce the cars locally at a ratio of 1:1 to those imported in 2024 (importing 1 EV for every 1 locally produced EV) and a 1:1.5 ratio for cars imported in 2025 (importing 1 EV for every 1.5 locally produced EVs). Thailand on track to upgrade third-class trains with air-con and seats

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to improve the service and facilities of its third-class trains by spending 780 million baht on new seats and air conditioning. For the first phase, 130 third-class carriages will be equipped with air conditioning by next year.

Deputy Minister of Transport Surapong Piyachote said the SRT is now seeking operators to carry out the improvements. The first batch of renovations will occur on 130 carriages out of the existing 400 and is expected to be finished by 2025. Continued …

An 82-year-old Thai woman in Sattahip has become a social media hero after she used a rope to pull an electrician to safety from a potential electrocution and gave the man CPR to save his life.

Mobile users must verify SIM cards by tomorrow or face restrictions

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has mandated that individuals possessing between six and 100 SIM cards must verify their identities at mobile operators’ service centers by tomorrow, July 11, or face restrictions on outgoing calls and text messages.

Out of a total of 3,981,251 SIM cards, 1,635,407 had their identities verified as of yesterday, leaving over 2.3 million cardholders to complete the verification process by the deadline. A tragic incident occurred Monday when a fish farm owner drowned in her pond in Chanthaburi after being pulled in by a fish. Her younger brother revealed that she could not swim.

Rage over plan to raze Thai national park for farming

The ongoing public hearings organized by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) over a plan to declare 265,286 rai of land in Thap Lan National Park as no longer being protected forest land – paving the way for these parts of the park to be used for agricultural purposes – have sparked heated debate.

While a number of the villagers – who began occupying parts of the park before the boundary of Thap Lan National Park was declared – support the separation of the 265,286 rai, many conservationists and other members of the public disagree with the plan, approved by the cabinet on March 14 of last year. Thailand’s island enforces plastic ban

People in Koh Nang Yuan, a famous tourist island in southern Thailand, have maintained the habit of limiting the use of plastic items for many years, especially single-use products. Tourists are also required to do the same to retain the island’s natural environment and protect the coral reef.

Comprised of three islets connected by white sand, the island is a great diving spot to see coral reefs. Thailand is facing the dual challenge of tackling extensive infrastructure investment needs and growing public finance constraints. Baht tipped to rise to 36.1 to the greenback

The baht could appreciate further to 36.1 to the U.S. dollar in the short term following recent gains to a one-month high on Monday, as weaker than expected U.S. economic data prompted the market to anticipate the Federal Reserve may start trimming U.S. interest rates in September.

More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.

The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. Country’s growth potential declining, says BoT chief

The country’s economic growth potential is expected to hover around the 3% mark for the next five years, a decline from the average of closer to 3.5% reported in the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput.

Southeast Asia will no longer be a safe haven for Chinese solar companies because the United States is about to introduce new tariffs on imports of solar cells and panels from the region, forcing them to seek alternative locations for overseas expansion.

After investigating imports of crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, assembled into panels or not, from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, the U.S. International Trade Commission said last month that there is a reasonable indication that the products are sold at less than fair value in the U.S. because they are subsidized by local governments. Fuel consumption decreases 0.4%

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has launched an aggressive nationwide crackdown on drug abuse and trafficking, named the “X-ray” operations. This initiative seeks to root out drug abusers and dismantle trafficking networks across Thailand.

Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke announced that drug abusers will be directed to rehabilitation centers, while traffickers will face arrest and rigorous legal consequences. Thailand faces a significant surge in COVID-19 cases, with infections expected to peak in July, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, chief of Thailand’s Disease Control Department. Auto output could hit 14-year low

 

Thailand’s automotive production could plunge to a 14-year low this year, excluding the pandemic years of 2020-22, dipping to 1.65 million units, though monthly production is expected to start improving slowly in the fourth quarter, says Krungsri Securities (KS).

Why are so many foreigners residing in Thailand problematic types?

I can’t help but notice all the negative aspects about many of the expats I’ve come across in Thailand. It’s disheartening to see that so many foreigners seem to fall into one of several categories: unpleasant, criminal, or otherwise problematic.

Firstly, the number of rude and disrespectful expats is staggering. It’s as if some people left their manners at the airport. From obnoxious behavior in public to a complete lack of respect for Thai culture and people, these individuals don’t add anything positive to the backdrop. Heavy flooding after torrential rains in Phuket

Heavy rainfall in Phuket disrupted flights and caused widespread flooding across the tourist island province. Starting at 7am yesterday, persistent rain forced the diversion of around 10 inbound flights to other airports, including Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Krabi, Langkawi, Penang, and Surat Thani.

Madagascar lemurs, tortoises seized in Thai bust reveal reach of wildlife trafficking

In May, authorities in southern Thailand arrested six people for illegally transporting 48 lemurs and more than 1,200 critically endangered tortoises, all of which had reportedly been obtained from the wild in Madagascar.

The seizure is the latest in a string of illegal wildlife trade busts in Thailand. Red pandas, monitor lizards, snakes and parrots have been uncovered in similar incidents in the country in recent months, for instance. Thai fruit the sweet spot for exports, May sales soar 128% over April

Thailand’s fruit exports in May soared 128% month on month to US$1.4 billion, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) reported on Friday, predicting that the trend would continue for several months.

Total exports in May were valued at $26.21 billion, increasing 7.2% over the previous month and was the highest in 14 months, with main contributions coming from agricultural products, TPSO Director-general Poonpong Naiyanapakorn said. Continued …

Re: New tax on foreigner income

“It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

“Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

“This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)

Lots of rain forecast for Hua Hin

The Thailand Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning, forecasting heavy rain for Hua Hin over the next week.

Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rainfall in some places such as Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung. Temperatures will range from 23-27°C at the minimum and 31-34°C at the maximum.
