Good news for Hua Hin fishing: Hua Hin to deploy 800 artificial reefs

Hua Hin is set to deploy 800 artificial reef blocks as part of a project aimed at rehabilitating marine resources and strengthening the livelihoods of local fishers. The initiative, led by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, falls under the 2026 fiscal year plan and will see the artificial reefs laid in designated areas off the coast of Hua Hin District.

Soi 94 roadworks set for completion by end of October

Road construction work on Soi 94 in central Hua Hin is now expected to be completed by the end of October, according to local officials. The resurfacing project, which covers a 500-meter stretch of the road, includes the installation of reinforced concrete and upgraded drainage systems.

The project began on July 22, 2024, and was originally scheduled to be completed in February this year. However, work was halted due to issues involving underground utilities and soil subsidence. Explosives and hand grenades found in Hua Hin rubbish bin

Authorities in Hua Hin are investigating after a local scrap collector discovered military-grade explosives and hand grenades dumped beside a rubbish bin in the Hin Lek Fai area on Wednesday morning.

Electric bills to remain steady through 2025

Electricity bills during the last four months of this year will not be further reduced as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has decided to maintain the current power tariff despite positive factors that could lead to a lower rate.

The tariff rate, which is used to determine electricity prices, stands at 3.98 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), applicable until the end of August. The 3.98-baht rate is among three options the ERC unveiled yesterday to seek the public’s opinion. The others were 4.87 and 5.10 baht a unit. Continued …

Are damaged Thai banknotes still usable?

Whether damaged Thai banknotes are accepted generally depends on the discretion of individual vendors. Minor damage, such as a small tear at the corner, often does not prevent their use for payment.

Zika Virus Spreads During Thai Rainy Season

Thai food prices surge 106.5% in 13 years, cost of living soars amid rising rent and inflation

According to research conducted by Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA), food prices in Thailand have surged by 106.5% over the past 13 years, from 31 baht per dish in 2012 to 64 baht per dish in 2025. The study focused on prices in the Silom, Surawong, and Sathorn areas, which are considered key business districts in Bangkok.

Thailand is facing growing pressure from the looming deadline for negotiations over retaliatory U.S. tariffs, with just two weeks left. Poll finds rising economic anxieties

Thais fear for the future, with rising anxieties over income and possible job losses, according to the “What Worries the World” survey conducted by global market research firm Ipsos.

The study outlines the five primary concerns among the Thai population during the first half of 2025, which are financial/political corruption (45%), poverty and social inequality (37%), unemployment (31%), inflation (24%), and crime and violence (22%), according to Pimtai Suwannasuk, Ipsos Thailand’s senior client officer. Thailand risks major losses if US pork market opens under 0% tariff deal

Kasikorn Research Center has raised concerns over the prolonged U.S.–Thailand tariff negotiations, especially the risks of a 0% tariff exchange that would open Thai markets to specific U.S. agricultural products — most notably pork — while reducing tariffs in other sectors. The deal, analysts warn, could hurt Thailand far more than it benefits it.

Following the U.S. government’s announcement of a 36% reciprocal tariff on Thai imports, effective Aug. 1, Thai policymakers are under pressure to respond. K-Research puts GDP growth at 1.2%

GDP growth this year could be as low as 1.2% or even less if the government fails to clinch a deal with the U.S. that ensures the reciprocal tariff is competitive with those granted to neighboring countries, said Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Less Tourism To Thailand: Is There A Reason For This Trend?

Thailand, which was formerly a top draw card among tourists in Southeast Asia, has been experiencing a noticeable downturn in tourist arrivals from over a year ago. Latest figures reveal a 5% fall in the visits made by tourists to the country, with the first half of 2025 seeing a total of 16.6 million visitors, at a reduction of 17.5 million the previous year. The drop was significant in May 2025, in particular, with 14% fewer tourists than the previous year.

This decline is particularly alarming to Thailand, where tourism represents around a fifth of the country’s gross domestic product. At a time when millions of jobs and businesses rely on tourism, these decreasing figures are not simply a figure; rather, they signify an imminent economic struggle which may put the livelihood of many at risk. 3 Indian men call cops on Pattaya bar girl over small breasts

Three Indian men in Pattaya sparked a police call-out after accusing a Thai bar girl of ripping them off, claiming she looked nothing like she did under the bar lights and even complained about her “small boobs.”

Thailand builds giant bridges to save wild elephants from roads

Thailand has launched two colossal new bridges to stop wild elephants from meeting a grisly end under speeding cars. The towering structures were built in Rayong’s Khao Chamao district and Chanthaburi’s Kaeng Hang Maew district — key corridors for elephant herds roaming the east.

Hua Hin City has submitted a funding request totalling 405,957,500 baht to the Subcommittee on Local Administration, with the aim of supporting core public services and improving local water infrastructure.

‘Moderately Serious’ Arsenic Levels Found in Kok River

An Austrian tourist has died in an incident on Koh Samui after falling down a flight of stairs at his hotel while reportedly intoxicated. The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning and police have ruled out foul play.

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Thai PM suspended

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from her duties pending a ruling on whether she breached ethical standards in violation of the constitution, following a controversial phone call with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen.

Revision of alcohol sales ban from 2-5 pm under review

The Ministry of Public Health expects scrutiny of a new bill containing a series of amendments to the Alcohol Control Act 2008 to be completed later this month, says Minister Somsak Thepsutin. The legislation will get rid of outdated military-era sales restrictions and ease curbs on advertising, but will also introduce some stricter regulations.

The law will also formally repeal National Peace Keeping Council Order No 253, dating back to 1972, which sets the legal hours for alcohol sales, currently 11am to 2pm and 5pm to midnight. Continued …

Eight Confirmed Dead, Two Still Missing After Inferno at Tissue Factory

Eight workers have been confirmed dead and two others remain unaccounted for following a major fire that tore through a tissue paper factory in Nong Khae district, Saraburi.

The blaze rapidly consumed large parts of the building due to the highly flammable materials inside. According to initial reports, 10 employees were trapped inside the office area on the second and third floors when the fire erupted. Bangkok building collapse tied to construction and design flaws

Thai investigators concluded that flaws in the design and construction methods caused the collapse of a partially built Bangkok building that killed at least 89 people during the March 28 earthquake, according to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

An investigation by a government agency and three universities found that the elevator and stairwell walls — key structures meant to absorb shear force — were improperly designed and built. Snakes on a plane, again: India foils third Thailand wildlife smuggling attempt this month

Indian customs officers in Mumbai said they have stopped a plane passenger arriving from Thailand with a wriggling cargo of live snakes, the third such seizure this month. The passenger, who arrived on Sunday, has been arrested, the customs agency said, with “further investigation underway”.

The live snakes included reptiles often sold in the pet trade, and were largely non-venomous, or with venom too weak to affect people. In early June, customs officers stopped a passenger smuggling dozens of venomous vipers, also arriving from Thailand. Prayad Marksaeng crowned Toyota Senior Championship winner in Hua Hin

Local golf pro Prayad Marksaeng clinched the championship title at the Toyota Senior Championship/Zenn Cup 2025, the third stop on the 2025 Thai Senior Tour. Prayad, 59, finished with a 14-under-par total of 202, earning him the winner’s cheque of 120,000 Thai baht.

Alcohol sales easing awaits ministry nod

The committee on alcohol beverage control has acknowledged that the easing of alcohol bans on Buddhist holy days has yet to be extended to ordinary retail shops, pending clarification from the Ministry of Interior.

Weekend sees more heavy rain across Thailand in seasonal deluge

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for 57 provinces to prepare for heavy rainfall over the weekend. The northeastern and northern regions, as well as Bangkok and surrounding areas, are expected to experience significant rainfall, covering 60%-80% of these areas.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms across 40% of the area, mainly affecting Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range between 23-25°C at the lowest and 32-35°C at the highest. Continued …

Thailand’s BOI Approves $870 Million in New Investment Projects

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has approved investment applications worth a total of 28.6 billion baht (US$870 million) in digital infrastructure and travel sector projects, as well as improved incentives for the use of local content in the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EV) and hybrids, as well as electrical appliances (E&E).

The largest project approved is Stratus Technology Co.’s plan to invest 23.7 billion baht to build a Tier 3 data center with an IT load of approximately 203 megawatts (MW). Editor: A “promenade” is in the plans. However, legal action by the affected businesses is a possibility, delaying any demolition and possible “improvements” perhaps by years.

Red Cross and Hua Hin District Fair starts today

The 27th annual Red Cross and Hua Hin District Fair will take place from June 27 to July 6. The fair, organized by Hua Hin District in partnership with the Hua Hin District Branch of the Thai Red Cross Society, will be held at the activity area behind Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall on Hua Hin Soi 102.

Phuket officials are ramping up security in one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations after a safety inspection at Patong Beach, aimed at reassuring tourists and locals. Authorities have set a final deadline ofJuly 7 for the demolition of more than 30 beachside buildings in Hua Hin that have been deemed illegal due to encroachment on public coastal land.

The buildings in question include homes, guesthouses, and seafood restaurants, many of which have become familiar fixtures in the area over several decades. They are located along Naresdamri Road, stretching from the Fishing Pier to the Chaomae Tubtim Shrine, a section of Hua Hin’s beachfront long associated with local business and tourism. Continued …

Local officials have carried out an on-site inspection of ongoing road-improvement works in the Takiab area, as part of efforts to upgrade road conditions and improve safety for motorists. Hua Hin installs high-capacity water pumps to help prevent flooding

Hua Hin has begun operating two high-capacity water pumps to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season. The pumps, provided by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (Region 4), are diesel-powered and capable of discharging 31,500 liters of water per minute. They have been installed at two key locations — at the end of the Khlong Takiab canal and near the Huana Reservoir.

According to municipal officials, the pumps are intended to speed up the drainage of water from canals in higher-lying areas, allowing excess rainwater to be channeled into designated catchment zones before being released into the sea. Continued …

Road safety shock: Pedestrian deaths on the rise

A new report on deaths among footpath users is shocking and unacceptable. On Monday, the Department of Disease Control released its safety report, saying 5,066 pedestrians were killed in accidents from 2015 to 2024, or 506 deaths annually.

Businesses call for delay in minimum wage hike

The government needs to reconsider its plan to increase the daily minimum wage in Bangkok to 400 baht from July 1, as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot bear additional costs in such a weak economy, which is expected to slow further in the second half of this year, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Bangkok is slated to be added to a list of provinces where the daily minimum wage is 400 baht, a campaign pledge of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. A pilot program in four areas raised the daily minimum wage to 400 baht on Jan. 1 this year. Continued …

New minimum wage could lead to hotel layoffs

Large-scale layoffs in the hotel sector could be seen during this low season if the government agrees to raise the minimum wage to 400 baht from next week as planned, while the Thai Hotels Assn.(THA) has submitted a petition to the prime minister, asking for the policy to be cancelled.

La-iad Bungsrithong, an adviser to the THA board, said that as five-star hotels in Chiang Mai had earlier been mandated with the 400-baht daily minimum wage, they had already felt an impact from the soaring wage costs, which are up 14% from last year. Continued …

The Thai government aims to finalize several new free trade agreements (FTAs) with global partners by 2026, with the deal with South Korea expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

She also confirmed that the European Union (EU) and Thailand are accelerating talks to finalize the EU-Thailand FTA as soon as possible. Phuket Fines Over 28,000 Foreign Tourists for Traffic Offenses So Far in 2025

Phuket officials have reported that 28,809 foreign tourists have been fined for traffic violations on the island to date in 2025. Russian visitors topped the list with 3,121 cases, followed by tourists from China (1,721), the UK (1,419), France (1,365), and India (1,069).

Since Jan. 1, the police have arrested 369 foreigners for various offenses. These include 87 violations of the Immigration Act, 65 cases of drunk driving, and 27 breaches of the Alien Employment Act.
