Cha Am Crab Tasting Festival starts today

The 9th Cha Am Crab Tasting Festival showcasing fresh, high-quality crabs directly from the sea in Cha Am begins today at the Cha Am beach viewpoint, continuing through March 16.

Thai population on course to drop by half in 60 years

The ongoing trend of declining birthrate could see Thailand’s population drop from the current 66 million to 33 million in 60 years, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin warned on Thursday.

‘Master plan’ under way to fix woes of aging demographics

A master plan is being drafted to improve Thailand’s ability to cope with the consequences of two key factors exacerbating the country’s problematic demographic trend — namely, a rapidly aging population and declining birth rates, the government said yesterday.

Swiss man who allegedly assaulted Thai doctor faces gun charges

The Ministry of Interior will press additional charges against the Swiss national who allegedly kicked a female Thai doctor as she sat on the staircase of his rented villa in Phuket last week. The new charges relate to the possession of two handguns.

Swiss scandal sparks crackdown on unruly farangs in Thailand

The scandal involving a Swiss man assaulting a Thai doctor in Phuket prompted authorities to initiate a massive crackdown on illegal foreigners and farangs behaving badly in Thailand. In total, nearly 30 foreigners were arrested during the past weeks.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is gathering public opinion about adjusting the power tariff used to calculate electricity bills between May and August, before deciding whether to maintain the tariff rate at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit).

Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

The government said on Friday French tire maker Michelin planned to invest 300 million euros (11.63 billion baht) in Thailand over the next three years to increase production capacity.

Michelin has already invested more than €1 billion in Thailand with five plants and 8,000 workers, the government said in a statement issued during Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to France, where he met with company executives. Continued …

PM sets ambitious goals for tourism

The government aims to attract more than 8.5 million travelers from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, expected to bring in an estimated 664 billion baht this year, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said.

Bangkok bus operator approves purchase of 3,390 EV buses

State-run public bus operator Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is procuring 3,390 electric vehicles (EV) to replace its aging fleet that has been in service for more than three decades, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Friday.

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. Just over 6% of Michelin-starred establishments globally — one, two and three stars combined — are currently helmed by female chefs. Facebook dispute leads to teenager being shot dead in downtown Hua Hin

A dispute that started on Facebook resulted in a 16-year-old teenager being shot dead in Hua Hn on Thursday night. The incident, which also left another person seriously injured, unfolded on Nares Damri Road in the municipal area of Hua Hin.

The altercation began when a local teenager became embroiled in an argument on Facebook over derogatory remarks made about his sister. 54 of 77 provinces face hazardous smog levels

Fifty-four out of 77 provinces in Thailand were blanketed with hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, with 27 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, experiencing red (seriously harmful) levels of pollution.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported on Thursday that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, at 128.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Thai EV sales surge by 603% amid government incentives

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sales in Thailand surged by 603% year-on-year to 73,568 units last year, with the upward trend expected to continue throughout this year, as per the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Temperatures set to soar in Hua Hin this week and next

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

However, forecasters say the temperatures may actually feel much warmer. According to the heat index, average temperatures will feel like 42 °C. Continued …

Yamu Beach in Phuket may have just played second fiddle to an encroachment crisis engulfing the pristine sands of Hua Hin. Evidence surfaced recently showcasing a long line of eateries and guesthouses that have sunk their claws deep into Hua Hin’s main beach.

More than 10 million Thais sought treatment for illnesses linked to air pollution in 2023, authorities said.

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Heat stroke is a real danger with “feels like” temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius possible in the current humid conditions, the weather office warns.

Consumers biggest losers as speeds drop, prices rise after telecom mergers

Mergers in the telecommunications industry have resulted in poor network quality and rising prices, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said on Tuesday.

NESDC was citing a recent survey by the Consumer Protection Board, which said that consumers are paying more for very little. For instance, it said, the price of a basic mobile package has risen from 349 baht to 399 baht, while the internet speed has dropped. The commander of Region 8 Police in Phuket, Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit has announced that Phuket police have made an official request to the Immigration Police to revoke the visa of 45-year-old Urh ‘David’ Fehr – he’s the Swiss citizen who is alleged to have attacked a female Thai doctor at the beachfront step of his villa in Cape Yamu.

30 rainmaking planes to battle drought, pollution

Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …

Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. Black panther spotted in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas.
