Summer of 2024 has claimed 38 lives in Thailand due to heatstroke

A total of 38 people have died of heatstroke this year and most deaths occurred in the northeast of Thailand, the Heath Department said on Sunday.

Dr. Atthapol Kaewsamrit, deputy director-general of the Health Department, said that many parts of Thailand were experiencing extreme hot weather since February 22, resulting in 38 deaths caused by heatstroke. Continued …

Extreme Heat Leads to Pause in In-Person Classes at Thai Schools

The secretary-general of Thailand’s Basic Education Commission, Thanu Wongchinda, has advised schools to stop in-person teaching in face of the anticipated extreme heat.

Water discharges through Lop Buri dam cut by 62% to conserve water

The reservoir behind Pasak Jolasid Dam in Lop Buri province is drying up, with water only filling 15% of its capacity, sufficient for consumption and agriculture for about four months.

Chupong Isarat, director of the Pasak Jolasid Dam Water Distribution and Maintenance Project, said that only about 148 million cubic meters of water are left, making it necessary to reduce discharges of water from the reservoir from 3.4 million cubic meters per day to only 1.3 million cubic meters, starting this week, as planned by the Royal Irrigation Department. Hazardous smog chokes north, world’s 4th worst level in Chiang Mai

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the fourth worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am today that 11 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 82.1 to 158.8 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Three workers killed amid hailstorms in northeast

Several northeastern provinces were hit by hail and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday, resulting in three deaths of construction workers in Bueng Kan.

Hailstorm Kills 21,000 Chickens and Damages Worth 3 Million Baht

A major hailstorm in the Phu Kheaw district of Chaiyaphum caused extensive damage and led to the death of 21,000 chickens at a local poultry farm. The cost of destruction is estimated to be over 3 million baht.

Chinese Businessmen Extorted in Bangkok; Police Officers Among Suspects

Five Chinese businessmen were forcibly detained and extorted for 2.5 million baht in Bangkok on May 5. The extortion perpetrators, according to the Din Daeng police, included active and retired Thai law enforcement officers and civilians.

The incident began on April 25 within a Bangkok hotel where four Thai men coerced the businessmen into accompanying them. The plot hinged on a deceptive digital currency deal worth US$65,000 or 2.5 million baht. Continued …

Households spend most on travel, petrol, phone bills

Thai household spending on consumer goods in April averaged 18,187 baht, with the biggest expenses being on public transport, petrol and mobile phones, according to a Commerce Ministry survey.

The non-food and alcoholic products category accounted for 58.5% of the total expenditure, while the food and non-alcoholic products category comprised the remaining 41.5%, said Poonpong Naiyanapaporn, head of the ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office. Continued …

Labor Ministry to support law to protect some 20M freelancers

The Labor Ministry will push for enactment of a bill to better protect some 20 million freelance workers nationwide, a spokesman of the ministry said on Sunday.

Trang Tourist Boat Overturns, One Fatality

A severe incident occurred at sea near the Pak Meng Bridge, Trang Sea, when a long-tail tourist boat carrying 14 occupants capsized. Tragically, a 68-year-old woman died.

Chonburi Surpasses Phuket as Second Most Visited Tourist Spot in Thailand

Bangkok is still the most-visited city in Thailand as of March, according to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. It saw 4,459,579 tourist arrivals, with approximately 50% being from overseas. Hotel occupancy sat at 76.3%.

Chonburi, known for its resort city Pattaya, followed closely as the second most-visited location with 1,892,712 visitors, nearly half of which were international tourists. The hotel occupancy rate was slightly above Bangkok at 76.7%. Continued …

Bangkok moving overhead wires to underground

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) are taking steps to improve safety and aesthetics in Bangkok by replacing overhead communication cables with underground alternatives.

Hanging communication cables, common in cities and suburbs of Thailand, pose risks such as fire hazards and cables falling onto roads. The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) has revealed plans to develop 10 provinces as prime tourist locations. The scheme aims to spotlight provinces such as Phrae, Lampang, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Phanom, Sisaket, Chanthaburi, Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Trang, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. British tourist faces 20 years in jail for cocaine hidden in passport

Jamie Louis Swain, 29, from Enfield, North London, could face up to 20 years in a Thai prison after reportedly being caught with cocaine hidden in his passport. Swain was arrested at Phuket International Airport on his arrival on an Etihad Airways flight on Thursday night.

An immigration officer discovered a small plastic bag filled with white powder in Swain’s passport during routine checks for visa stamping. Japan town begins blocking Mt Fuji view from ‘bad-mannered’ tourists

The International Union of Sex Workers (IUSW) has revealed that Thailand is home to 250,000 sex workers, one of the highest numbers worldwide. Despite this, the profession remains illegal in the country and workers are lacking basic employment rights.

In a recent report titled ‘Sex Worker Statistics by Country, Gender’, the IUSW provided a breakdown of the worldwide sex industry. The findings suggest there are over 50 million sex workers globally, with 41.6 million female and 10.4 million male. Hua Hin takes ‘long term’ measures to improve water supply

Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

Thailand records nearly 12 million tourists in first four months

Thailand recorded 11.95 million foreign tourist arrivals from the January to April 28 period, its tourism ministry said on Tuesday.

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

There are 41 industrial estates housing 6,000 factories in the EEC, which covers parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao. Their demand for water stands at 1.5 million cubic meters a day. Continued …

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day. Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.

A British tourist, Glen Parke, has been ensnared in a hotel scam while on holiday in Thailand. Parke booked a 59-night stay at the apparent Lek Lek Residence on Koh Samui through Booking.com, paying £282 (around 13,000 baht).

On arrival, he found that the supposed one-bedroom house was, in fact, just a small roadside shop. Parke had to hastily arrange alternative accommodations, spending £3,044. However, due to high demand, Parke had to shift to a third hotel, costing him an additional £3,579. Continued …

Heavy rain, storms forecast for mid-May as dry season nears end

Now that the dry season is drawing to a close, Thailand can expect to be hit by at least three storms by mid-May, the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) said.

Thailand’s Tak province is seeing a surge in malaria cases, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). Since January, 2,913 infections have been identified, largely among foreign residents accounting for 60% of the cases. A defense volunteer was killed and five others were injured in a shooting, followed by an explosion, in Bannang Sata district of Thailand’s southern province of Yala today.

According to police reports, Mada-oh Waeyeegao, a defense volunteer, was shot by the pillion passenger of a motorcycle, as he was riding another motorcycle back to his home after attending a prayer at a masjid in his village in Bacho subdistrict. He died at the scene. Continued …

No wage hike on Labor Day

The government will not raise the minimum daily wage to 400 baht on Labor Day as previously announced. Instead, it will wait for the results of a tripartite committee on May 14.

Foreigners and their overseas income: what next?

More than three months after “assessable” foreign income became taxable, many of Thailand’s expats are still swimming in a sea of uncertainty. Lots of advice online, but few definite answers. Senior officers from the Revenue (Department) have said little of late, although there has been a half-promise to the Swiss ambassador in a televised interview to print the tax identification forms in English as well as in Thai.

There is a view among some Thai lawyers that we must wait until July for clarification on nitty-gritty issues such as double taxation treaties and the tax status of pensions. By that time, some expats will have passed 180 days of minimum residence necessary for tax liability in this category. Continued …

Baht falls even further, loses 8.8% of its value in 2024

Despite a return of a current account surplus and the prospect of a better economy in 2024, the baht on Wednesday again broke theBt37 barrier point against the dollar. Today it was ฿37.15. It came after the Bank of Thailand intervened to temporarily keep from breaching it.

The baht has been falling since the beginning of 2024. The reasons, of course, are complex, but essentially there is a lack of confidence, at this time, in the kingdom’s economic planning. Investor capital is moving out. With its aging population, jaded industrial base and a decades-long failure to address serious structural problems, the current government insists it can spend its way out of the problem. Central bank calls for review of digital wallet scheme

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has suggested that the government restrict the digital wallet cash benefit scheme to around 15 million financially vulnerable individuals, instead of the planned 50 million in its proposal. According to the BoT, this modification in the plan, costing 150 billion baht, can be effective immediately.

Japanese account for more than half of total foreign investments in Q1

Thailand received nearly 36 billion baht in investments from foreigners during the first quarter of the year, the Department of Business Development said.

Japanese investors topped the list, accounting for 19.006 billion of the 35.902 billion baht invested by foreigners, or more than half, Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the department, said. A total of 178 foreign nationals had been permitted to invest in businesses during January-March under the Foreign Business Act BE 2542 (1999). Home building market set to grow despite challenges

Thailand’s home building market is showing signs of growth this year, even though rising costs, a labor shortage, and buyer sentiment remain major challenges, Worawut Kanchanakul, president of the Home Builders Assn., said on Tuesday. His confidence stems from the government’s approval on April 9 of new measures aimed at boosting the country’s real-estate sector.

The measures include lowering property registration and transfer fees, extending a reduction in mortgage fees to properties valued up to 7 million baht, providing tax breaks for individuals who build their own homes, and raising the value threshold of properties developed by companies eligible for the Board of Investment’s tax incentive from 1 million baht to 1.5 million baht. Car production down 23.1% y/y in March

Car production in Thailand dropped 23.08% in March from a year earlier to 138,331 units, the Federation of Thai Industries said today.

The figure compared with February’s 19.28% year-on-year drop. In the January-March period, car production fell 18.45% from a year earlier to 414,123 units, the FTI said. Continued …
