Cha-am beach erosion project to receive 249-million-baht funding

The Marine Department is preparing to allocate more than 249 million baht for a sand-nourishment project to prevent coastal erosion along Cha-am Beach. The initiative is part of efforts to restore the beach, which has been affected by long-term erosion linked to natural processes and coastal development. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026.

Kittirat Methee, acting director of the Engineering Division of the Marine Department, said that erosion along Cha-am Beach has been ongoing for many years, worsened by shoreline development, including hotels, housing, shops, and structural encroachment. The Marine Department has received repeated complaints from residents and businesses regarding the loss of beach space and its impact on tourism. Continued …

New Thai alcohol rules put drinkers on the hook for fines  

People in Thailand wanting to quench their thirst with an afternoon tipple risk steep fines from today under amended alcohol-control legislation that strengthens enforcement and significantly tightens restrictions around marketing and advertising.

Alcohol sales in Thailand have been banned at most retail outlets and supermarkets between the hours of 2 pm and 5 pm since 1972, but changes to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act that take effect today now mean individuals can be fined 10,000 baht (US$300) or more for drinking or being served alcoholic beverages during prohibited times or in prohibited places. Thailand’s Foreign Minister outlines plan to restore global influence

Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thailand’s minister of foreign affairs, shared insights into the country’s diminishing global image and explained why Thailand is currently perceived by many as just a destination with good food, kind people, and beautiful tourism.

Heavy flooding affects 15 provinces; 13 dead in central and northern regions

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) yesterday reported that heavy flooding continues to affect 15 provinces across Thailand, impacting over 3,000 villages and affecting more than 470,000 people. As of now, 13 fatalities have been confirmed.

The central region remains the hardest-hit, with over 97,000 households in nine provinces suffering. Particularly, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is severely impacted by the release of water from the Chao Phraya Dam. The water level in the Chao Phraya River at station C.35 has risen 1.12 meters above the riverbank, with expectations for further increases. Continued …

Tokyo Police Arrest Man for Trafficking 12-Year-Old Thai Girl

Tokyo police have arrested 51-year-old Hosono Masayuki on suspicion of forcing a 12-year-old Thai girl to work in his massage parlor. Authorities are looking into the possibility that this case may be linked to human-trafficking activities, as the girl was allegedly coerced into providing sexual services to customers.

In late June, the girl and her mother entered Japan under a 15-day “temporary visitor” status. Her mother left in mid-July, leaving the child alone and vulnerable. During her time there, the child was reportedly made to sleep in the massage parlor’s kitchen. Continued … 

Pickup Race Turns Deadly in Phitsanulok, 4 Killed, 7 Injured

A street race between two pickup trucks on Mittraphap Road in Phitsanulok province ended in deaths Thursday evening, leaving Four people dead and seven others injured. The vehicle drivers reportedly lost control during the race, colliding with a motorcycle before one truck slammed into a parked construction vehicle. Police have detained both drivers for questioning and legal proceedings.

Rescue workers from the Prasat Boonsathan Foundation arrived to find a severely damaged Isuzu D-Max pickup truck. Inside the vehicle were three injured passengers and one deceased elderly woman. The injured, three adults and one child, were rushed to hospital, where one, an elderly woman later succumbed to her injuries. Continued …

Man Battles Python to Save Pet Cat in Chonburi

A 20-year-old man in Chonburi fought off a large python that was moments away from swallowing his pet cat early yesterday. The encounter occurred at a rented room in Village 5, Huai Kapi subdistrict, Mueang district.

Firefighters from Saensuk Municipality responded to an emergency call and managed to capture the snake, which measured nearly three meters long and weighed around 15 kilograms, before releasing it safely back into the wild away from residential areas. Continued …

GCME Partners with Peak Energy for 500 kWp Rooftop Solar Project in Rayong

GC Maintenance and Engineering Co., part of the PTT Global Chemical group, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Peak Energy for a 500 kWp rooftop solar project at its Rayong facility in Thailand. Under the long-term agreement, Peak Energy will design, finance, install, and operate the system.

Once operational, the project is expected to generate about 730 MWh of clean electricity annually, reducing approximately 350 tons of CO₂ each year. Structured as an on-site PPA, it allows GCME to source renewable power without any upfront investment. Continued …

Thai fuel prices reduced by Bt0.50 a liter

Retail fuel prices are being reduced by 50 satang per liter from 5am today as part of a series of government measures to ease the cost of living. The Fuel Fund executive committee yesterday approved a reduction of the oil fund levy on diesel by 50 satang per liter, and sought cooperation from oil traders nationwide to pass the savings on to drivers, according to Energy Minister Auttapol Rerkpiboon.

As a result, the retail price of diesel at petrol stations is expected to drop from 31.94 baht to 31.44 baht per liter. Prices of all types of petrol and gasohol are expected to be cut by the same amount. Continued …

New EV fast-charging station opens in Thap Sakae

Located at the Electricity Generating Authorities’ Learning Center in Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, a new electric vehicle charging station was designed under the “Enlightened EcoCharge” concept, aiming to be more than just an EV-charging point but also a learning resource and model for clean energy. The station is equipped with two DC fast chargers of 180kW and 120kW capacity, accommodating up to four vehicles simultaneously. The station was officially launched on Sept. 26. New ATM licenses to expand availability

The Bank of Thailand plans to introduce new business licenses for white-label automated teller machines (ATMs) next year. The licenses are available to both banks and non-bank operators, with the goal of expanding financial inclusion nationwide.

Bangkok police station to be demolished after sinkhole damages foundation

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today addressed the urgent issue of Samsen Metropolitan Police Station. Following the assessment of the building, additional foundation piles were found broken due to the sinkhole that occurred on Sept.24.

Bangkok authorities are working around the clock to stabilize the area around Samsen police station and restore the road in front of Vajira Hospital, following the recent major subsidence that caused a sinkhole.

The sinkhole, measuring about 30 by 30 meters and 20 meters deep, opened on Sept. 23, apparently caused by a leaking water pipe that led to soil subsidence and the collapse into a subway tunnel under construction. Continued …

Foreign tourist arrivals to Thailand in first 9 months of 2025 drop 7.6%

According to a report from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand during the first nine months of 2025 (from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30) totaled 24,115,328, a decrease of 7.6% compared to the same period last year. The country earned 1,113,755 million baht in revenue from foreign tourists, which is a 5.85% decline.

Mekong hydropower projects said pose risks to Thai environment, economy

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says transboundary hydropower dam projects along the Mekong River pose a risk to Thailand’s environment, economy and community safety.

In a letter submitted to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the NHRC said it had outlined its concerns regarding four hydropower dam projects: the Ban Koum Dam, the Sanakham Dam, the Phou Ngoy Dam and the Pak Chom Dam, all on the Lower Mekong along the Thai-Lao border. Thailand braces for tropical storm and cool winds in 24 provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Temperatures will range from 22 to 25°C at their lowest to 32 to 34°C at their highest, with variable winds blowing at speeds of 15 to 30 km/h. Continued …

Giant Fish Thought To Be Extinct Is Spotted in the Mekong River

A huge fish in the Mekong River thought to be extinct has been spotted three times in recent years. “The giant salmon carp is like a symbol of the Mekong region,” said Chheana Chhut, a researcher at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Casino Complex Law Set to Reach Thai Cabinet by Year-End

The Thai government is preparing to introduce a groundbreaking draft law on the establishment of entertainment complexes, including legal casinos, to the cabinet for approval by the year’s end.

Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025. Thailand is gearing up to impose a 300-baht tourism tax, initially targeting air travel, possibly starting within the next six months.

Tweaks needed for northern Thailand tourism project

The new co-payment tourism promotion program for northern destinations in Thailand will need an upgrade in terms of both the amount of subsidies from the government and number of tourists to receive them, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

The total budget for this program, Aeo Nuea Khon La Khrueng (travel to the north at half prices), will unlikely reach 24 billion baht as in the past program because the new one will be split into five phases for continuous economic stimulus effects, he said. Continued … 

Thai visitor arrivals stats prove link between tourism and peace

Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. That expectation has now been tempered to 35-37 million in view of the extremely fragile and flammable global scenario and the impact of the upcoming electronic travel authorization requirement. The amended contract for the high-speed rail project linking three airports is now in the final phase and will be presented to the cabinet for approval next Tuesday (October 29), the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) said.

Foreign tourists warned of transnational pickpockets in Bangkok, conmen purporting to be police

Metropolitan Police in Bangkok have issued warnings to tourists, particularly those carrying cash or valuables, in the most popular areas of the capital. The first warning comes after the arrest on Oct. 18th of an Iranian tourist who had targeted tourists while purporting to be a police officer. The culprit would identify cash in their belongings and appropriate a portion before escaping in a car.
