Authorities are closely monitoring developments after a road collapse on Rama II Road caused major disruption this morning, with traffic at a standstill and a citywide water outage declared in Samut Sakhon.

The Waterworks Division of Samut Sakhon Municipality has declared an emergency, announcing that a main water pipeline beneath the road has ruptured. Two Probable Causes Behind Rama II Crane Collapse: Carelessness Likely

Thai Structural Engineers Assn. has identified two causes behind the Rama II crane collapse: incomplete locking of crane parts and improper placement of support legs.

Upon inspecting the damage and reviewing aerial images, as well as images before the incident, Chulert Jitjuajun, vice president of the Thai Structural Engineers Assn., pointed out that the collapse was highly likely due to errors in placing the crane’s support legs in the wrong position. The support legs were positioned on the thinnest part of the concrete segment rather than on the thicker and stronger areas. This led to the support legs puncturing the back of the concrete segment, causing the structure to collapse. Continued … 

Heavy rain ‘to arrive earlier this year’

This year’s rainy season is expected to arrive earlier and bring heavier rainfall than usual, Deputy Prime Minister Borwornsak Uwanno has warned, urging agencies to step up preparedness for major flooding.

Borwornsak made the remarks yesterday before chairing the first meeting of the task force assigned to draw lessons from recent floods and prepare for potential large-scale disasters. Smog to persist for a week

Toxic haze continued to blanket Bangkok and large parts of the country, with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exceeding safe limits in 45 provinces nationwide, authorities said, warning that unhealthy air conditions could persist until Jan. 23.

Heads roll after Chinese detainee releases

One police officer has been dismissed and four others face criminal and disciplinary action for their alleged involvement in corruption linked to the unlawful release of Chinese detainees, the Royal Thai Police said yesterday.

All five officers are investigators attached to the Metropolitan Police Bureau. The case centers on allegations that police investigators colluded to temporarily remove Chinese nationals from immigration detention for criminal proceedings but failed to return them for deportation, allowing them to disappear from official custody. Recently, market analysts pointed out that as Thailand’s economic growth forecast is revised down from 2.2% in 2025 to 1.5% in 2026, the petrochemical and plastics industry, which accounts for about 20% of the country’s GDP, is facing severe challenges. Strong baht clouds Pattaya tourism outlook, as China market slumps 35%

Chonburi’s tourism sector faces mounting challenges in 2026, with a strengthening baht weighing on long-haul markets and Asian arrivals remaining weak, according to Thanet Supornsahasrungsi, president of the Chonburi Tourism Federation Assn. (ACTF).

Thanet said that during the winter travel period from March to April, extending to the Songkran holiday, long-haul visitors from Europe and Russia continue to travel to Thailand. Six Dead as Covid Cases Surge in Thailand

Thailand is on high alert as Covid-19 cases spike, with six deaths reported last week. According to the Department of Disease Control (DDC), infections surged to 16,607 between May 4 and May 10, up from 14,680 the previous week.

The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall from today through Sunday, set to soak several parts of the country, including Bangkok. According to the forecast, the southwest monsoon will intensify from May 13–17, bringing widespread thunderstorms across the country.

The world has a plastic problem and it seems to be getting worse. A study released in late April found that chemicals in plastics were potentially associated with as many as 350,000 heart disease deaths globally in 2018.

Evidence is also accumulating that the microplastic bits now found everywhere in our environment – from Antarctica to the Amazon – are invading our bodies and have been implicated in everything from heart disease to infertility. Thailand’s labor boss is declaring war on deadly workplaces — promising to cut fatalities in half within five years. At the National Occupational Safety Day 2025 opening ceremony, Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn unveiled his ambitious “Safety Thailand” vision to drastically reduce serious workplace injuries and deaths.

Thailand Enhances Compensation for Travelers Facing Flight Issues

From May 20, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) will improve compensation for travelers affected by unannounced flight delays and cancellations. These new measures aim to better assist travelers already waiting at airports.

For international flights, airlines must provide complimentary meals and communication access if delays exceed two hours. If delays stretch beyond five hours, airlines need to offer either 1,500 baht in cash or alternatives like travel vouchers within 14 days. Accommodation and shuttle services must also be arranged for those in need. New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Thailand burned more than 20 tons of confiscated narcotic drugs worth 6.45 billion baht (about US$175 million) on Wednesday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, authorities said.

Bank of Thailand Forecasts Modest Growth for Remainder of 2024

The Bank of Thailand anticipates slower economic growth in the upcoming third and fourth quarters, attributing this to a high base effect. According to Piti Disyatat, secretary of the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), second-quarter GDP is expected to grow by 1% from the previous quarter, a decline from the 1.5% growth observed in the first quarter. These projections were shared during a monetary policy forum held yesterday.

The central bank now estimates the growth rate for the third and fourth quarters to be between 0.6% and 0.7% per quarter due to the high base effect. Factories closing as cheap imports flood Thailand

Many local factories producing electronics, steel and plastics have shuttered this year as purchase orders shrink and cheap imports flood the Thai market, says the Industry Ministry. The shutdowns were ranked based on the investment value of the factories.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has revised its target for Indian tourist arrivals from 2.3 to 2.4 million this year, spurred by the recently introduced visa-free policy for Indian nationals.
