A Western man walks down Beach Road holding hands with a Thai girl and naturally assumes the local men are glaring at him with quiet jealousy. He thinks he is a predator who just entered the local ecosystem and stole the best women from the dating pool, leaving the native men with fewer options.
It is a massive, ego-boosting illusion. The truth is, they are not even swimming in the same pool. To understand how Thai men view the “farang invasion,” you have to completely separate the country into two distinct demographics: the educated middle-class men of Bangkok, and the provincial men of Isan. Pattaya prostitution crackdown ahead of USS Abraham Lincoln visit
Police detained 25 woman during a late-night prostitution crackdown in Pattaya on Saturday, as authorities prepare for the arrival of about 5,000 US military personnel in Chon Buri next week.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is due to dock at Laem Chabang Port from Sept. 2-6. Its personnel are expected to spend time in the area for rest and recuperation, according to Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, a Ministry spokesperson. Continued …
Thailand cuts household electricity rates from September
Thailand’s new electricity tariff structure will take effect with September bills, cutting the average rate for all customer groups and introducing lower charges for households using less power.

Oil prices rose by more than 1% today after US forces struck an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran reported retaliatory attacks on US bases in Jordan. Brent crude futures climbed US$1.08, or 1.23%, to US$89.18 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 92 cents, or 1.10%, to US$84.32.

The Financial Times (FT), a British financial news outlet, published an analysis asking why Thailand has “one of the world’s lowest” interest rates. The analysis followed a vote by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) this week to keep the policy rate at 1%.
It also warned that Thailand was becoming one of the countries in the region most exposed to “Japanification”, a prolonged period of low inflation and low growth. Thailand plans single cigarette tax and tighter export controls
Thailand’s Excise Department is pressing ahead with plans to overhaul cigarette taxation by introducing a single tax rate in a move aimed at improving revenue collection and reducing price distortions created by the existing two-tier system.

Phuket beach site ordered cleared
Phuket’s Thalang district has enforced a Supreme Court ruling over more than five rai of disputed land at Bang Tao beach, where 16 restaurants have been built.

Virgin Atlantic to launch direct London-Phuket flights
Virgin Atlantic will begin seasonal non-stop flights from London Heathrow to Phuket on Oct. 18, creating what the airline says will be the only direct air link between London and Thailand’s largest island.

Thailand plans CO2-based vehicle taxes to bolster EV hub status
The Finance Ministry is considering lower excise taxes for manufacturers that invest in production bases in the country, use domestically produced raw materials or components, and have begun manufacturing for export.
The proposed incentives would be available to both established and new manufacturers of internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid and electric vehicles. Thailand will accelerate its energy transition following parliamentary approval of a 400-billion-baht borrowing decree, with plans for household solar rooftops and a restructuring of vehicle taxes expected to become clearer in September, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas said.
Ekniti said the Finance Ministry is moving ahead with measures under the emergency decree authorizing the ministry to borrow up to 400 billion baht to address the impact of the energy crisis and transform the country’s energy infrastructure.
