Tropical storm to bring heavy rain until Monday

A depression is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm today, land in Vietnam and cause heavy downpours across Thailand until Monday, according to the Meteorological Department.

The depression, with wind speeds of 55 kilometers per hour at its center, was located about 300km northeast of Quang Tri province in Vietnam at 4am today, Kornrawee Sitthichivapak, director-general of the department, said. Continued …

Flood warnings issued for northeastern provinces

Authorities are closely monitoring water levels along the Mekong River, particularly in Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, as rising waters threaten low-lying areas.

As of Tuesday, water levels in Nakhon Phanom reached 11.82 meters, just 0.18 meters below the critical level of 12 meters, sparking concerns for communities along the riverbanks. A severe landslide and flood disaster has affected nine provinces in Thailand, resulting in 19 fatalities and numerous injuries. The Ministry of Public Health is mobilizing medical supplies and healthcare personnel to assist the affected populations.

The disaster, which occurred between Sept. 8 and yesterday, has created a critical situation requiring a coordinated response from multiple government agencies. Thailand Unveils New Bill to Regulate Cannabis While Keeping It Legal

Thailand has proposed a new bill to regulate its cannabis industry and restrict marijuana uses to primarily health and medical purposes, the latest effort to rein in recreational smoking after several policy u-turns.

Under the draft legislation, cannabis or its extracts will be allowed for medical treatment and research by state agencies, besides its use in herbal, food and cosmetic products. Consumer spending to finally recover this year

The Bank of Thailand’s expected interest rate cuts, prompted by the strong baht and growth in the tourism sector, will both increase the country’s consumer spending, which is expected to exceed the 2019 level for the first time this year, say analysts.

Manufacturers’ confidence dips to 87.7 points in August

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) fell to 87.7 points in August amid a stagnant economy, a strengthening baht and the impact of severe flooding in the north, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Thailand’s rice exports surge 22% in first 7 months

Thailand’s rice exports rose 21.97% in the first seven months of 2024 compared to a year earlier, driven by rising global demand, as rice-importing countries seek to secure stocks amid food security concerns, official data showed on Wednesday.

The Southeast Asian country shipped out 5.68 million tons of rice during the January-July period, worth 132.4 billion baht (about 3.7 billion U.S. dollars), representing a 50.97% jump in export value year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Continued …

Navy rescues 130 tourists stranded on an island off Phuket

About 130 Thai and foreign tourists, mostly Chinese, were safely rescued yesterday after they became stranded on Racha Yai Island, off Phuket, due to rough seas and strong winds, making it impossible for the tourist speed boats to pick them up.

Alerted by a call for help, the Royal Thai Navy sent a coastal patrol vessel to the island to take the stranded tourists back to the shore of Phuket. A naval officer said that the rescue mission was hampered by rough seas, but all the tourists were safely rescued. Continued …

Here, customers tend to enjoy stunning views of the sea and an immaculate beach from an alfresco dining area sheltered by tall native plants. However, it felt like we were being hit by a hurricane when dining outside at that time, as the wind was rippling our hair in all directions and taking most of the fresh vegetables off our plates. Thailand’s energy-related CO2 emissions down 2.5% in first half of 2024

Thailand’s carbon dioxide emissions from energy usage from January to June stood at 121.9 million tons, down 2.5% year on year (YoY), the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) reported on Wednesday. The office said electricity generation emitted the most CO2 at 48.1 million tons, increasing 5.8% YoY.

In second place was the transport sector, which emitted 41.5 million tons of CO2, down 1.2% YoY. The industrial sector, meanwhile, emitted 25.6 million tons of CO2, decreasing 16.8% YoY. Continued …

Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Pakamart Tongkam points from the driver’s seat into the stark thicket of rubber trees that now surround us: “When I was a child, I slept out there in a small hut while my mum and dad worked in the plantation through the night.”

Several years later, as an adolescent, Pakamart helped her parents with their daily rubber tapping. The routine was grueling, she says during a visit to Nathawi district in southern Thailand’s Songkhla province, a heartland of rubber production. Hua Hin Food Festival starts Friday

The Hua Hin Food Festival 2024, scheduled for Friday-Sunday, will feature over 100 boothses, and will be held at Suan Luang Queen’s Park (19 Rai).

A 10-year-old Cambodian girl who was abandoned by her parents at Pattaya beach was helped by police after local residents and tourists saw her crying Monday night. Pattaya City police went to help the child at 10 pm after being alerted that she was sitting and crying at the beach not far from the station.

Severe flooding devastates Kanchanaburi fish farmers

Severe flooding and flash floods have devastated over 100 fish farmers in Kanchanaburi, causing damages worth more than 235 million baht. The disaster struck several districts between July 25 and 30, leading to substantial agricultural losses.

Deputy governor of Kanchanaburi Athisan Intra reported that flash floods and overflowing rivers have inundated homes and agricultural properties in Thong Pha Phum, Sangkhla Buri, Sai Yok, Mueang Kanchanaburi, Si Sawat, and Dan Makham Tia districts. Heavy flooding forces closures in Khao Yai National Park

Heavy flooding has led to the closure of key sites in Khao Yai National Park, impacting popular tourist destinations and local communities. Takhro Falls and the Sai Yai River in Prachinburi were shut down yesterday, while Nang Rong Falls in Nakhon Nayok followed suit today.

Park chief Chaiya Huaihongthong confirmed the closures, attributing them to the continuous downpours that have battered the region. Majority of cybercrime victims in Thailand are working-age women

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) revealed that over two-thirds of cybercrime victims are women, with most being of working age. From March 1, 2022, to June 30 this year, there were 575,507 online complaints, totaling 65.715 billion baht in damages, averaging over 80 million baht per day.

RTP deputy spokesperson Sirivat Deephor highlighted that National Police Chief Torsak Sukwimol is deeply concerned about the public’s vulnerability to various forms of crime, especially cybercrime. The government will slash by about 50% the personal income tax rate of professionals who are willing to return home to work for companies, as the kingdom seeks to attract manpower for industries ranging from electronics, automobiles, robotics and aviation.

Thai rice exports soar in June thanks to Indonesian demand boost

Thailand’s rice exports surged in June, driven by Indonesia’s increased demand to maintain food security, Thai Rice Exporters Assn. President Charoen Laothamatas said on Tuesday.

According to the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, Thailand exported 1.02 million tons of rice in June, up 78.7% year on year. This brought the country’s rice exports in the first half of the year to 5.08 million tons, marking a 25% year-on-year rise. Continued …

Pranburi Bar Owner Arrested for Alleged Minor Trafficking

Police have arrested a karaoke bar owner in Pranburi district for suspected minor trafficking focused on sex trade. The arrest followed a tip-off from an anti-trafficking group about probable unlawful operations in the bar, including the involvement of individuals below 18.

Wildlife officers help baby elephant stuck in mud

Thailand wildlife officers rescued a baby elephant that was stuck in mud as they patrolled a forest for poachers last week. Rangers discovered the three-year-old animal while conducting searches at Thap Lan National Park in Prachinburi province.

They dug around the hole and laid down thin branches to create an angled pathway for the elephant to climb. The rangers were unsuccessful so returned the next day with more equipment, but the elephant had gone and adult footprints were found in the area. Cannabis Shops to Close by April 1, 2025; Thai PM Orders Drug Rescheduling

UOB slashes GDP growth to 2.4%

Singapore-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) is preparing to downgrade Thailand’s GDP growth forecast this year to 2.4% from 2.8%, though it expects the Bank of Thailand to trim interest rates twice to 2% by year-end to prop up the economy.

Chatchai Market renovation plans revealed

Hua Hin officials have revealed more plans about the renovation of the iconic Chatchai Market. The decision to upgrade the market is aimed at enhancing the shopping experience and ensuring hygienic standards.

Under the new plan, Chatchai Market will feature a total of 44 stalls, each with dimensions of 2×2 meters, dedicated to the sale of food items, souvenirs, and local products. In addition to the commercial spaces, the renovation will introduce separate male and female restrooms, dish washing zones, dining areas, and an updated electrical system complete with CCTV surveillance. Missing German Businessman Hans Peter Mack Found Dismembered in Freezer

The body of missing German businessman Hans Peter Mack, 62, was found in a rental home in Pattaya last evening and was confirmed early this morning, around 12:30 AM by Banglamung officials.

Overpass Bridge in Bangkok Collapses, Multiple Fatalities and Injuries Reported

An under-construction overpass bridge located at the On Nut-Lat Krabang Road in Bangkok collapsed near dusk yesterday evening, killing at least two people and injuring eight more.

PTT puts renewable strategy into overdrive

National oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc is stepping up efforts to use more renewable power and further develop its hydrogen fuel business, part of a move to grow the company in a sustainable manner.

Midnight sea tragedy in Prachuap Khiri Khan claims fisherman’s life

A fishing crew member tragically drowned at sea near Prachuap Khiri Khan region. The unfortunate accident occurred around half past midnight, as revealed by Artit Butlakorn, deputy inspector at Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan Police Station. Local police were alerted by officials at Prachuap Khiri Khan Port Control Center (Pipo).

Upon arrival at the scene near Placharoenlap Bridge, police found a fishing trawler named Pongsombat 5, which was about to dock. On the boat’s deck lay a covered body. Preliminary identification revealed the victim was 43-year-old Prasit. Continued …

Passenger’s Leg Severed By Moving Walkway At Don Mueang Airport

A female passenger’s left leg was ripped off to the knee by a moving walkway at Don Mueang International Airport early yesterday morning and she was quickly taken to Bhumibol Hospital for treatment.

Karan Thanakuljeeraphat, director of Don Mueang Airport, said at 8.30 a.m. that the unidentified female passenger was traveling to Nakhon Si Thammarat and was proceeding through the southern corridor between piers 4-5 in Terminal 2 when hit by the accident. Continued …

Not First Time – Airport Moving Walkway Devoured Passenger’s Sandal In 2019

After a woman’s left leg was severed to the knee by a moving walkway at Don Mueang Airport early yesterday morning it has led to netizens criticizing airport safety, with one of them mentioning that a similar incident occurred four years ago, but fortunately he pulled his foot out of the jammed croc sandal he was wearing, which was then devoured by the machine.

The unnamed passenger said that on July 30, 2019, upon landing at Don Mueang Airport from Osaka, Japan, at around 3.50 a.m., he was going through a moving walkway and just as he was about to step off it his croc got stuck and was so badly jammed he could not lift his foot. Continued …

The travel website The Boutique Adventurer has ranked Don Mueang Airport as one of the 29 most dangerous airports in the world in 2023. In a recent article published at the end of June 2023, the website revealed the list of the most perilous airports, with Don Mueang Airport securing the 26th position.

After a 4.5 magnitude earthquake rocked Phisanulok and was felt in Phichit and Kamphaeng Phet provinces at 12.17 a.m. Yesterday, an academic pointed out that buildings in this zone should be strengthened, as a ministerial regulation governing seismic resistance of structures was only enforced in 2021.

Amorn Pimanmat of Kasetsart University’s engineering faculty said this was a medium magnitude earthquake, but because it was shallow, being 5 kilometers deep at its epicenter in Phitsanulok’s Phai Lom subdistrict, Bang Krathum district, vibrations were felt across this province as well as nearby Phichit and Kamphaeng Phet provinces. 9% of youth smoke illegal vapes, study finds

An estimated 9.1% of young people in Thailand use e-cigarettes, mostly due to peer pressure and the influence of their friends, according to the results of a survey by the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS).

The survey was conducted on 61,688 people nationwide between April 25 and June 6. The results showed that 14.6% of young people in Bangkok use vapes, ranking the capital the highest among the 13 areas studied, said DHSS chief Sura Wisetsak. Continued …

The baht has again weakened to 35.60 to the U.S. Dollar, in a continuation of the trend that has been prevalent over the last seven months.

Thailand set to overtake Vietnam as world’s No 2 rice exporter

Thailand is on track to overtake Vietnam as the world’s second-biggest rice exporter this year, after its shipments in the first four months rose to 2.62 million tons, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said on Thursday.

Controversial Thai Tourism Fee Postponed Again

The 300-baht ‘land entry’ fee collection has been postponed to Jan. 1 of next year.

The Marine Department will this year seek Cabinet approval to build Thailand’s first cruise ship terminal in Pattaya.

The Marine Department will oversee development of the terminal, which will meet growing demand from cruise operators, a senior official said on Thursday. The chief of the Eastern Economic Corridor Office on Thursday said that the construction of a high-speed railway linking three airports will be a year behind schedule.

Move Forward leader and prime minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat has caught Covid-19 for the third time, and, as he is now self-isolating a meeting of the eight-partner coalition government scheduled for Thursday June 22 has been put off to next week.

Chaitawat Tulathon, Move Forward’s secretary-general, said while this key meeting has been postponed, a seminar to be attended by Move Forward’s new MPs scheduled for June 21-23 will continue with him standing in on Pita’s behalf. Continued …

Apisak Pisanno, director of Nan Immigration and team, apprehended an overstaying Taiwanese male. A tourist service center worth 29 million baht in Khuan Don, Satun province, remains incomplete after six years, despite pledges to expedite construction. The contractor for the project is the younger brother of the local governor.

On Facebook, the watchdog page “Operation Dog Guarding House” exposed the construction of a tourist service center located in Khuan Don, Satun province. The project, with a budget of 29,798,000 baht (US$ 855,121), was approved in 2016. The contract was awarded to Giat Jaroenchai Karnchang Co., a construction company owned by the younger brother of Samrit Siangprasit, the governor of Satun.
