New app use mandatory for driving licenses

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is cracking down on security, rolling out mandatory identity checks with the ThaID app from Nov. 1 for anyone booking driving license and vehicle registration slots.

Seksom Akkharaphan, the deputy director-general and official spokeperson of the DLT, announced the new pre-booking system. International Series resumes at Black Mountain starting tomorrow

After a two-month break in the schedule, The International Series resumes play this week in Thailand with a six-tournament sprint to the finish for the 2024 series. At stake is a coveted spot in next year’s LIV Golf League.

The Black Mountain Championship is the fifth leg of the 10-tournament International Series, the set of elevated events on the Asian Tour. Play starts tomorrow and runs through to Sunday. The leading player at the conclusion of the season earns full entry into LIV Golf for 2025. Continued …

Cabinet approves aid package for flood victims in 50 provinces

The cabinet approved a package to help flood victims yesterday, both individuals and businesses in 50 provinces, which includes tax exemptions, soft loans, debt moratoria, interest rate cuts and loan guarantees.

Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said that the rehabilitation package is on top of the 9,000 baht one-time financial help provided by the government to about 67,000 households impacted by flooding this year. Continued …

Heavy rain sparks landslide warnings in southern Thailand

The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center has issued warnings to residents in nine southern provinces, as heavy rains move southward, increasing the risk of landslides. Jirayu Huangsap, the spokesperson for the center, reported that provinces at risk are Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Satun, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala.

Authorities are urging residents in all these areas to stay vigilant and follow updates from government agencies. Efforts to assist flood-affected communities, particularly in Betong and Than To districts in Yala, are already underway. Continued …

A hungry wild elephant ransacked a soldier’s kitchen to search for food. Video shows the jumbo tearing through the kitchen made of wood and iron sheets at the ai Tub Tun-Huai Samran Wildlife Sanctuary in Surin. It rifled through containers and emerged holding what appeared to be a sack of rice.

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century. Video: Elephant overturns vehicle with the driver inside

An elephant overturned a pickup truck on the side of the road with the driver inside, as it is believed that the latter did not wait for the animal to cross the road. The incident happened about 128 kilometers east of the capital Bangkok in rural Chachoengsao province Saturday evening.

The incident shocked nearby drivers, who said the incident was so frightening they thought they were going to “have a heart attack”, as they drove back and called emergency services. The elephant disappeared into the jungle before wildlife rangers arrived. Continued and video …

Khao Yai Park addresses controversy over wild elephant photo guidelines

The head of Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima Province has responded to recent concerns about regulating tourist behavior around wild elephants, following incidents where visitors approached the animals too closely to take photos, endangering both themselves and the elephants.

Chaiya Huayhongthong, head of Khao Yai National Park, announced improvements to the park’s elephant monitoring and repelling systems. This involves assigning the elephant-management team to work closely with the park’s wildlife monitoring unit. Thailand to explore new tax system for aging population

Thailand must urgently adjust its tax structure and increase tax participation to address future expenses related to its aging population, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. The Finance Ministry is exploring a negative income tax (NIT) system to assist individuals with incomes below a government-set threshold.

Julapun clarified that the goal is to ensure residents can sustain their livelihoods, not to reduce state welfare expenditures. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has outlined guidelines for foreign business operators regarding the application for securities/derivatives licenses and permissible activities in the country.

Suspension of TM6 Arrival Form Extended to Boost Tourism

In a bid to alleviate bottlenecks at immigration and stimulate tourism, the suspension of the TM6 form requirement for travelers entering Thailand has been extended until April 30 next year.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said on Tuesday that it was preparing to meet the Tourism and Sports Ministry’s plan to promote the country as a destination for tourism and sport events next year. This follows a meeting of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, TAT executives, and representatives from 74 TAT offices worldwide on Oct. 3.

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool explained that the “Thailand Grand Tourism and Sport Year 2025” scheme was initiated during the meeting by the Tourism and Sports Ministry. Similan Islands Reopen, Draw 2,000 Tourists After Eco-Pause

The renowned Similan Islands in Thailand have reopened to tourists following a five-month closure aimed at reviving marine ecosystems. Yesterday, nearly 2,000 visitors, both domestic and international, returned to the popular diving and snorkeling haven.

Thousands of visitors chill out at Doi Inthanon

As many as 7,627 travelers flocked to experience chilly weather at Thailand’s highest peak, Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong district, during the Nawamindra Maharaj long holiday from Saturday to Monday.
