North and northeast regions report highest air pollution levels

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported this morning that 43 provinces were blanketed with unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) and red (hazardous-to-health) levels of the dust were detected in 18 northern and northeastern provinces. The government-set safe level is at 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air in 24 hours.

Moderate air quality with PM2.5 levels from 26.4 to 36.5µg/m³ were recorded in Bangkok and 32 provinces, including Ayutthaya, Chumphon, Krabi, Nakhon Pathom, Phangnga, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Songkhla and Surat Thani. Continued …

Air pollution remains high in all Bangkok districts

The air quality in all 50 districts of Bangkok was categorized as “orange”, or starting to affect health, this morning, the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

The center reported the average PM2.5 levels throughout the city at 44.5 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in excess of the country’s standard of 37.5 µg/m³ over a three-hour average (5am to 7am). Continued …

Phayao national park shut indefinitely as hotspots increase

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) yesterday announced the closure of the Doi Phu Nang National Park in Phayao province indefinitely following an increasing number of hotspots from wildfires.

The closure will allow nature to rehabilitate itself, while also preventing future wildfires in the area, which are mostly caused by villagers setting fire to the trees to hunt wild animals or harvest wild mushrooms. Continued …

Bank predicts Thailand’s export growth in 2025 to fall to 1.6%

The Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) of Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) has lowered its export growth forecast for 2025 from 2% to 1.6%, citing trade wars and external factors as the main reasons.

In November, the SCB EIC predicted that Thailand’s export growth would be around 2%, while the Commerce Ministry and the government had set an export growth target of 3%-3.5%. The British tourist who died in Bangkok following a violent altercation with two karaoke bar workers last Sunday has been identified. The British man, 28-year-old Nick Weir from Salisbury, Wiltshire, South West England, was found lying on a footpath near Soi Pracharat Sai 1, in the Bang Sue district of Bangkok.

Areas in two Chiang Mai districts where wildfires have been burning for the past two weeks have been declared disaster zones, as local authorities battle to bring the fires under control.

Chiang Mai Gov. Nirat Phongsittithaworn announced yesterday that five subdistricts in Chiang Dao and Omkoi districts were designated disaster areas where emergency relief measures and wildfire monitoring were being stepped up. Thailand’s annual crop-burning season causes air pollution lethal enough to prematurely kill 34,000 people every year but the solution lies in another agricultural element: plants. The Air Pollution Solutions Communication Center reported that PM2.5 levels exceeded the standard in 37 provinces across Thailand, with northern and northeastern regions experiencing the highest levels o  air pollution. The situation is expected to worsen over the next seven days.

Yesterday’s report highlighted that PM2.5 levels in several provinces, including Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Prakan, exceeded safe thresholds. That could be bad news for much of Asia. First, the scale is far higher this time around, and more countries are likely to come under the tariff net. In 2018, the average tariff revenue of the U.S., as a proportion of goods imports, increased from 1.5% to 2.9%, according to the Yale Budget Lab. All eyes in the Thai banking industry are on the merger talks between the state-owned Krungthai Bank (KTB) and TMBThanachart Bank (TTB). When finalized, the deal will create a new “super bank” and become Thailand’s no.1 bank in terms of total assets.

KTB is a state-owned bank established in 1966, with the Finance Ministry being the largest shareholder. It has total assets of 3.64 billion baht, ranking in fourth position behind Bangkok Bank (BBL, 4.55 trillion baht), Kasikornbank (KBANK, 4.33 trillion baht), and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB, 3.49 trillion baht), respectively. In the first two months of 2025, 181 foreign investors were approved to invest in Thailand, marking a 68% increase, the Business Development Department (BDD) announced yesterday.

Seven killed as Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge collapses on Rama II Road

The under-construction Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge collapsed onto Rama II Road in Bangkok’s Chom Thong district at 1:48 am this morning. Initial reports confirm seven fatalities and many injuries. Authorities are searching for about 30 people believed to be trapped under the debris.

Officials said a concrete beam structure for the new bridge, which is under construction, collapsed onto the existing expressway bridge located about 200 meters from the toll booth. The new bridge is part of the Rama III – Dao Khanong Expressway project. Continued …

The European Parliament on Thursday passed a resolution condemning Thailand for deporting Uyghurs to China. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday announced sanctions against officials from Thailand, a U.S. ally, for their role in deporting at least 40 Uyghurs to China, where Washington says the members of the Muslim group will face persecution.

Get migrants work permits, employers told

The government is urging employers to obtain work permits for migrant workers who are registered but who lack proper documents by March 30, warning that failure to do so will result in the workers losing their legal status and facing deportation.

Employers must submit health certificates, health insurance proof, social security documents, and a 1,000-baht fee. Foreign pilots face axe on Thai flights

Foreign pilots will not be allowed to fly domestic flights in Thailand next year if the aircraft shortage subsides, the Labor minister says, while the Thai Pilots Assn. has launched legal action to stop the practice.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the approval for foreign pilots is still on a temporary basis, with a duration of six months that can be extended for another six months. As the approval was announced in December 2024, the measure can be extended until the end of 2025. Continued …

Southern Thailand Security Overhaul Following Deadly Ramadan Attacks

Government ‘committed’ to national minimum wage hike

Higher food prices push February inflation up 1.08%

Headline inflation in Thailand rose by 1.08% year-on-year in February, fueled by price increases for food, especially fresh fruit, food ingredients, and ready-to-eat meals, as well as non-alcoholic beverages.

Digital wallet scheme approved in principle by Cabinet

Songkran’s notorious “seven dangerous days” have, as of Sunday, seen 1,259 traffic accidents, with 162 people killed and 1,279 injured. On Sunday, 317 accidents were reported, with 38 fatalities and 311 injuries.

Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. PM Srettha joins the water splashing fun in Hua Hin

Sporting a colorful shirt and shorts and carrying a water gun, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin joined locals and tourists in the resort town of Hua Hin in celebrating Songkran in Pone Kingpetch Park, at an event arranged by the Hua Hin municipality.

Selected wage hike to 400 baht takes effect in Hua Hin

This year’s second minimum wage hike to 400 baht/day took effect yesterday, while a 10% increase is state officials’ salaries will be implemented on May 1.

Thailand Reports Total of 116 Deaths in Three Days of Songkran

A total of 936 road accidents, with 968 injuries and 116 deaths, were reported on Sunday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in three days (April 11-13) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 11-17).

The province with the total highest fatalities was Bangkok with 8 deaths. The total highest number of accidents were Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla with 39 each, and the highest number of injuries was in Songkhla with 45 injuries. Continued …

The government’s ability to successfully push through the draft National Elderly and Basic Pension Act to garner a first reading — the first stage of a bill’s passage — or acceptance of the principle of the bill from the House of Representatives is considered a crucial cornerstone for building a support system for Thailand’s elderly population.

PM confirms digital wallet to be implemented in 4th quarter

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, along with his wife, visited the Hua Hin market in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Sunday morning and confirmed that people would receive 10,000 baht under the digital wallet scheme in the fourth quarter of this year.

During his visit to the morning market, he asked merchants how their businesses were doing during the Songkran holidays. Most of them said things were improving this year. FTI defends participation of convenience stores in digital wallet scheme

The chief of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has urged the government to undertake immediate stimulus measures, as there was still time for the digital wallet scheme to be implemented.
