Long way to go for Hua Hin Airport international status

Hua Hin’s long journey toward a fully functioning, modern airport has reached yet another juncture with the latest updates on its ongoing upgrades.

The long-standing issue of the airport’s inability to accommodate larger aircraft such as the A320, which seats up to 180 passengers, remains a significant hurdle. Plans to revamp the tunnel entry site, which requires expansion of the tunnel entering Hua Hin, a critical factor in this limitation, are underway with an additional 300 million baht allocated to the project. Grand countdown events planned across Thailand to welcome 2024, including Hua Hin Countdown on Dec 31

Major countdown events will be held in Bangkok and 10 other provinces across the country to usher in 2024, featuring colorful fireworks on the night of New Year’s Eve.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is working with businesses and authorities in those provinces to organize the “Amazing Thailand Countdown 2024”, aimed at promoting the country – and particularly Bangkok – as a “global countdown destination”, according to Apichai Chatchalermkit, the TAT’s deputy governor for tourism products and business. Thai Birth Rates Hit 71-Year Low

Anukul Peedkaew, the permanent secretary of the Thai Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), has published statistical data on the NationalThailand website on the rate of Thai children being born in the past year, showing the lowest rates in 71 years.

According to a statistic by MSDHS, the recent data on birth rates in 2023 showed that there were only 502,000 newborn babies; however, the goal was set at 700,000. It was the lowest birth rate in 71 years. Continued …

Former Buddhist chief and executives charged with embezzling 30 million baht

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is set to charge a former head of the National Office of Buddhism (NOB) and two high-ranking executives with embezzling millions from temple budgets.

The NACC, after green-lighting resolutions on two alleged temple embezzlement cases, is now preparing to unleash a legal storm upon the accused trio, led by ex-NOB chief Nopparat Benjawattananan. NACC Secretary-General Niwatchai Kasemmongkol declared that the evidence amassed will be handed over to the courts, ensuring justice prevails. Continued …

Police raid finds 87 guns, over 4,500 ammo in famous YouTuber’s house

Phitsanulok police are investigating the legality of 87 guns and over 4,500 rounds of ammunition found on Friday at a luxury house in Muang district belonging to a famous YouTuber.

House owner Trinnasit (last name withheld), 33, said the guns and ammo were family heirlooms he had received from his father. Trinnasit runs a YouTube channel featuring gun reviews, including modification and maintenance techniques. Continued …

Police raids in response to murder plot linked with Bt1 billion family business concern

Thai police on Friday morning cut the head off a dangerous plot that was already in motion to murder a businessman, his mother and their lawyer. The suspected mastermind behind the diabolical scheme, however, turned out to be the man’s father and the woman’s estranged husband.

Police with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) were alerted to the plot in November linked to a substantial business dispute. The matter became urgent in recent days when investigators detected three hit men pursuing the target while traveling in Bangkok. One of the three arrested on Friday is a former naval officer jailed for the 2006 murder of a police officer in Mae Sot, Tak province. He was recently released from prison. Continued …

House says yes to marriage equality

The House’s approval of all four bills seeking to amend the Civil and Commercial Code to allow same-sex marriages in the country during their first reading has received positive responses from members of society, according to government spokesman Chai Watcharonke.

The bills aim to amend 68 provisions under the Civil and Commercial Code to redefine terms to ensure gender equality and diversity. All four bills received 369 of 380 votes of approval, with one abstention, on Friday. The bills are expected to still be read for a second time. Continued …

PTTEP Reforestation Project wins green awards in UK

PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. (PTTEP) has received the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice 2023 in the environmental improvement category with gold level from the green organization, for the PTTEP reforestation project. The award ceremony was organized in London.

PTTEP has implemented the project since 2013, which help absorb approximately 446,500 tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to around 42 million of trees planted to help minimize global warming impacts. Continued …

Bt98 billion in foreign investment in 11 months, creating over 6,000 jobs

Foreign investments in Thailand for the first 11 months of 2023 amounted to 98.288 billion baht, slightly down year-on-year, but led to the creation of jobs for 6,086 people, the Ministry of Commerce has announced.

Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the Department of Business Development, revealed that over the past 11 months (January-November), 403 proposals had been approved from foreigners to invest in businesses in Thailand. Continued …

The problem with potash: Thailand’s salt-encrusted fields

“We don’t want our brothers and sisters in other parts of the country to face the impacts we have been facing,” says Thanawan Kainok, addressing a panel discussion on the “Past, Present and Future of Potash in Isan” in Wanon Niwat district, in northeast Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon province.

In 2015, the China Mingda Potash Corp., a Chinese company registered in Thailand, received a license to survey this rural area for potential sites to mine potash – naturally occurring salts rich in potassium and sodium. To date, while the company has explored several locations, they are yet to commence commercial mining due to strong opposition from local communities in the area. Continued … 

MICE segment poised to slow down

The MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) industry this year is estimated to recover to 80% of the 2019 level in terms of revenue, but it may slow in 2024 as pent-up demand eases, according to the Thailand Incentive and Convention Assn. (TICA).

Climate-smart rice farming the future

Rice is Thailand’s most important food crop and an integral part of Thai culture and society. At the same time, rice farmers remain among the poorest occupational groups in Thailand and are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate — rice farming is a water-intensive and temperature-sensitive activity conducted in a climate that is becoming increasingly characterized by longer dry spells and higher temperatures.

In addition, rice farming is a significant source of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change, particularly methane: about half of Thailand’s agricultural emissions come from rice farming, according to the Thai Biennial Update Report to the UN. Continued … 

70 Tourists Rescued Before Night Boat Sinks Off Koh Tao

A night boat traveling from Surat Thani to Koh Tao started taking on water after a pump broke down at dawn yesterday with 70 tourists, both foreigners and Thais, safely rescued before it later sank.

At 6 a.m., Capt.
