Facebook scam thwarted in Hua Hin

Hua Hin police successfully intervened to stop a local motorcycle garage owner from losing nearly 20,000 baht in an elaborate online scam involving fake Facebook pages impersonating a famous influencer and bogus cyber police officers.

Poloce Col. Kampanat Na Wichai, superintendent of Hua Hin Police Station, said officers acted quickly after receiving a report from the victim, a local business owner. He had first been targeted by a Facebook page posing as a well-known spiritual influencer, which falsely claimed he had won a 10,000-baht prize. Investigations revealed the ring used online job boards to recruit attractive secondary school students from Bangkok and its vicinity. Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) admitted yesterday that talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union are unlikely to conclude this year, despite earlier expectations. DTN Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said obstacles remain, with many sensitive and complex issues still under negotiation.

Jan Valkenborg from Riemst, Limburg province, was in Hua Hin when he was assaulted by a German national. The attacker, who had a criminal record and was a member of a fight club, also assaulted another person that same evening. Continued …

Hideyasu Kiyomoto, the mayor of Himeji City in Japan, this week proposed a significant price hike for foreign tourists visiting Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Currently, the entry fee is JPY 1,000 (about $6) for all, but the mayor suggested increasing it to around $30 for foreigners, while locals would pay $5. The extra revenue would help with maintenance and to counter overtourism.

Illegal tour groups forced to close

The Tourism and Sports Ministry has investigated illegal tour companies offering extremely cheap packages, forcing 10 of them to close. Tour agencies said these gray market companies already account for 50% of Chinese tour groups in Thailand.

The minister’s action is in response to a call from the Association of Thai Travel Agents, which recently raised concerns about the return of ultra-cheap inbound packages. Public urged to be discreet in water use amid low levels at reservoirs

The Royal Irrigation Department has urged the public to conserve water and is encouraging farmers to primarily rely on rainwater for agricultural purposes to store water for future use.

Praphit Chanma, director-general of the department, said that large and medium-sized reservoirs across the country held a total of 39.201 billion cubic meters of water, or 51% of storage capacity. Currently, 15.26 billion cubic meters of usable water is available, or 29% of total storage capacity. Continued …

The Thai Elite visa, which offers multiple-entry stays between five and 20 years, will totally replace its current packages on Oct. 1, 2023. Founded by then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2003, Thailand Privilege Card Co. is wholly owned by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. But a new senior management team at Elite has decided to introduce unprecedented changes.

All new applications for Elite must be made by Sept. 15 under the existing application rules: after that it will be too late. Current holders of the popular Elite Easy Access – a five-year visa available for a cash payment of 600,000 baht – have until Aug. 15 to transfer to a longer Elite visa, usually for 20 years: after that it will be too late. Employment on the rise as Thai economy continues to recover
