Bangkok’s electrifying plan to bury cables sparks into life

Bangkok citizens may have scoffed last year when the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) declared its grand plan to bury 1,454 kilometers of electrica  cables underground over the next decade. It seemed like a shocking revelation but the sparks of doubt soon flickered away as the city geared up for the electrifying endeavor.

This initiative was further illuminated by newly elected Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt, who sparked renewed enthusiasm when he took office two years ago. Continued …

Trang man wins 72-million-baht lottery jackpot

A man from Trang struck it rich after scooping 72 million baht in the latest lottery draw. He also won additional prizes, making his total winnings even more substantial.

The Government Lottery Office announced the results of the lottery draw yesterday afternoon. The winning number for the first prize was 205690. The three-digit front prizes were 885 and 747, while the three-digit back prizes were 137 and 070. The two-digit prize was 60. Continued …

Rare creature — named after ‘hundred-eyed giant’ — spotted showing off at Thai park

A rare creature stepped into a sunlit forest clearing in Thailand, ready to show off. Calling loudly, the animal wanted attention — and it got attention, just probably not the way it expected.

The singing creature caught the ear of wildlife officials at the Kathun Wildlife Sanctuary in Nakhon Si Thammarat, according to the Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Continued …

Myanmar nationals overtake Russians in Thai property market

Ownership titles of 3,938 condominium units worth a total of 18.02 billion baht were transferred to foreign buyers in the first quarter of this year.

The Real Estate Information Center said on Thursday that the number of units sold to foreigners and the value had risen by 4.3% and 5.2%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Continued …

Thai mango exports more than double in first three months

Thailand’s exports of fresh mango in the first quarter this year increased 130%, to about 1.6 billion baht, compared to the same period last year, while exports of sticky rice increased 13%, to about one billion baht during the same period.

Chotima Iemsawasdikul, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, said the TasteAtlast website’s recent ranking of Thai mango sticky as the world’s second best rice pudding has further increased the popularity of the dessert in numerous countries, offering a good opportunity for Thai exporters to increase exports and make use of the FTAs Thailand has with ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong. Cannabis backers urge minister not to turn back clock

Dozens of cannabis advocates urged the government on Thursday to abandon its plans to relist marijuana as an illegal narcotic, a week after it announced a dramatic policy U-turn just two years after decriminalizing it.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is pushing to allow cannabis use only for medical purposes, promising a tough stand on illicit drugs that he said were causing addiction and destroying the future of young people. Continued …
