Discovering Bangkok’s dining pleasures with Thailand’s top chef

Pot noodles might seem an odd dish to eat with Thailand’s most celebrated chef, but when you’re with Thitid “Ton” Tassanakajohn, you follow his lead. I find myself on a plastic stool in Jeh O Chula, a no-frills joint near Chulalongkorn University, in Bangkok, famous for its Mama Noodles Tom Yum.

iCon Fraud Unveiled: Lessons in Greed and Hard Truths

The iCon Group scandal has drawn a massive spotlight, largely due to the involvement of several high-profile celebrities. Beneath the surface, however, lies a tale of hope, greed, and hard truths affecting everyday investors. This scandal has underscored some valuable lessons that many have learned in the wake of this financial debacle.

Foremost, the adage “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” rings true. Fast riches rarely come without cost, as victims of the iCon scheme discovered. iCON Group scandal points to deeper problems in various Thai sectors

The allegations against The iCON Group, a direct-selling business led by “Boss Paul” Waratphol Waratvorakul, reveal increasingly deep connections to various sectors. It starts with the entertainment industry, where celebrities were used as “puppets”, either willingly or through deception, to enhance the credibility of The iCON Group and lure victims into believing in the business.

The situation then extends to the political sphere, with an audio clip surfacing of a politician asking for bribes and promising the support of “divine forces” (big-name politicians) to protect the group. Simultaneously, questions have been raised about the “civil servants and government agencies” involved, corruption and abuse of power to benefit risky business operations. Continued …

iCon Group programmer ‘transferred billions of baht before arrest’

After a court ordered the detention of 18 The iCon Group executives yesterday (Oct. 17) with 17 of them taken straight to prison, while the big boss, Woratphon Waratvorakul, or Boss Paul, was still being questioned by police, it was alleged that more than US247 million, or over 8 billion baht, was transferred out the country by the company’s programmer just an hour before he was rounded up.

Ekkapop Luengprasert, an adviser to the Interior minister said that, “An unusual money trail – over US$247,911,936, worth more than 8,223 million baht, was transferred out just an hour before ‘Coach Lab’ of The iCon was arrested.” Continued …

Court denies bail for 17 iCon executives

Seventeen executives and core members of the iCon Group were ordered detained last night, after the Criminal Court rejected the bail applications for three of them on the grounds that they may try to interfere with evidence or flee, and because their alleged offenses are serious and have widespread impacts.

Creating a ‘Goldilocks’ business climate for all

Whenever the odds seem stacked against human progress – when economic growth looks set to remain feeble, when too many countries appear destined to grow old before they become rich, when climate change seems out of control – it is worth remembering the distinctive virtue of our species. Human ingenuity is the reason why predictions of global doom, which have proliferated throughout our history, have never materialized.

It was ingenuity that defused the so-called “population bomb”, the 1970s threat that “hundreds of millions of people” would starve to death as rapid population growth exhausted finite supplies of food. Instead, agricultural innovations such as high-yield, pest-resistant crops caused global food production to grow faster than the population in nearly every part of the world. Continued …

How is Thailand Investing in Climate and Nature for Resilience?

Recently, the private sector has raised $45 billion annually to support climate initiatives, while 73 public and partially public climate funds are now in place. However, with the world off-track in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030, these efforts remain insufficient. The World Bank has called for a leap from billions to trillions of dollars in investment to truly make a difference.

The Asia-Pacific region, including Thailand, is no exception to this challenge. In fact, no SDG is on track to be achieved by 2030 in the region. At its current pace, the goals won’t be met until 2062 — 32 years behind schedule. Continued …
