Expats seeking a new life face challenges with stricter banking and taxation rules

Influenza cases rise five-fold in Thailand

A startling surge in influenza cases has been observed in Thailand this year, with a five-fold increase compared to last year’s monthly averages. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the public about illegal antiviral medications labeled as oseltamivir being smuggled into the country.

Dr. Thira Woratanarat from the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University revealed that from January to September this year, a significant increase in influenza cases was observed compared to the same period in the previous year. Continued …

Rising baht forecast to climb higher against dollar

The baht opened at 36.54 baht per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from 36.75 at the close of trading yesterday. The dollar weakened after the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell to 4.65% yesterday.

However, Krungthai Bank currency analyst Poon Panitpiboon cautioned the baht could face downward pressure if the Israel-Hamas conflict expands and results in higher oil prices that put pressure on Thailand’s current account balance. Continued …

Eleven provinces in Thailand continue to grapple with severe flood crisis, with Kalasin and Ubon Ratchathani experiencing rising water levels, as of today. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has mobilized resources and personnel from various agencies to expedite flood relief operations.

Mun River’s rise breaches barriers, submerging Thai communities, forcing mass evacuations

The Mun River broke through its sandbag barriers, causing a massive flood that submerged several communities up to 2 meters deep. The river’s relentless rise forced the evacuation of 195 families, while over 400 others continue to live in their flooded homes.

The Mun River’s powerful flow eroded its sandbag barriers yesterday, previously installed by the army, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and the Warin Chamrap Municipality. Loy Krathong to be proposed for addition to UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list

Thailand’s Culture Ministry is preparing to register Loy Krathong festival in 2024 in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage to complement the government’s policy of promoting Thai culture and soft power at global level.

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most popular festivals, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. It involves releasing “krathong” — lotus-shaped rafts decorated with candles, incense and flowers — onto lakes and rivers to honor the Buddha and the water goddess. Video: Cobra caught by wildlife handlers

A cobra lurking near a resident’s yard was captured by wildlife handlers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The terrified homeowner called the snake catchers for assistance on Oct. 7. Footage shows the volunteers grabbing the three-meter cobra using snake tongs as it tried to hide in a narrow alley beside the house. When they snared the cobra’s head, they then dragged it to an open space, where they hauled it inside a fertilizer sack to be released into the wilderness. Video 

Video: Enormous coiled python rescued from car dealership ceiling

Wildlife rescuers in Phetchabun removed a massive python that was found on the ceiling of a secondhand car dealership on Oct. 9. An epic battle between man and serpent unfolded as the python coiled itself around a metal beam 33 feet above the ground. The skilled team utilized a boom lift to safely capture the 14-foot, 24-pound python. Video 

Israel-Hamas conflict: 20 Thai nationals dead

Foreigners from at least 26 countries have been confirmed killed, taken hostage or are still unaccounted for in the war between Israel and Hamas as of Wednesday.

Kanchana Patarachoke, director-general of the Thai Department of Information and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters on Wednesday that 20 Thai nationals have been confirmed deceased, 14 have been taken hostage, and 13 are being treated in hospital for injuries. Thai Air Force Faces Challenges Repatriating Citizens from Conflict Zones in Israel

The Royal Thai Air Force asserted that they will repatriate Thai citizens home from Israel who wish to return, however, they currently face difficulties accessing the territorial sky in some countries. The process will take more time but puts the safety of relevant officers and refugees into great consideration.

Government defends 10,000-baht digital-wallet scheme amid economic criticism

Economic experts’ criticism of the 10,000-baht digital-wallet scheme was rebuffed yesterday by its supporters, who asserted that the cash handout would alleviate disparity and provide a crucial financial boost to the disadvantaged.

Jutipong Phummul headed the faction, which handed a plea to the government, encouraging the implementation of the digital-wallet initiative. IMF lowers Thai GDP growth forecast for 2023 to 2.7% due to global situation

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its economic growth projections for Thailand for this year and 2024.

The growth rate for this year has been lowered from 3.4% to 2.7%, and from 3.6% to 3.2% for 2024, as a result of global economic uncertainties, including China’s economic slowdown and conflicts between Israel and Palestine. Continued …

Bank of Thailand predicts 2024 growth of 4.4%

The Bank of Thailand has maintained its GDP growth forecast for next year at 4.4%, inclusive of the government’s economic stimulus measures, says Assistant Gov. Piti Disyatat.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) cut its growth forecast for 2023 from 3.6% to 2.8%, yet hiked its outlook for next year from 3.8% to 4.4%. Continued …

Thailand BOI Approves Investment Applications Worth USD1.1 Billion

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) yesterday approved investment promotion applications worth a combined 41 billion baht (USD1.1 billion) in projects, including the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EV), the generation of renewable energy from waste, data centers, as well as travel and tourism infrastructure and equipment.

Chinese Carmaker Geely And Malaysia’s Proton Consider EV Plant In Thailand

Malaysia’s national carmaker Proton and its Chinese partner Geely are considering setting up a plant in Thailand to produce electric vehicles, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Wednesday.

Hong Kong’s leader said Tuesday the city would seek to strengthen its economic and trade ties with Thailand after a meeting with the country’s prime minister, as the Chinese financial hub looks for more business opportunities in Southeast Asia.

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
