New PM2.5 standard will alarm public

PM2.5 has become a major environmental and health problem in Southeast Asia. To deal with the issue, members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have put in place PM2.5 standards to measure air quality. These countries usually use the World Health Organization’s guidelines on PM2.5.

Under the WHO’s guidelines, the average annual concentration of PM2.5 particles should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), while over a 24-hour period, the concentration should not exceed 15µg/m3. Continued …

Farmers must stop the fires

Last week, the National Environment Board (NEB) approved an environment policy that, if implemented, can tackle PM2.5 at a fundamental level.

The good agricultural practice “GAP PM 2.5” proposes creating farming zones to prevent farmers from conducting “open burning” during harvest time. It is one of the two chief causes, along with forest fires, of PM2.5 pollution, especially in rural areas. Continued …

Cabinet okays excise tax cuts on all gasohol fuel

Gasohol 91 and 95 will become 1 baht cheaper as of Nov. 7 for three months, according to a Cabinet resolution.

Energy Minister Peeraphan Salirathaviphak said on Tuesday that excise tax for all types of gasohol (petrol combined with ethanol) will be reduced by 1 baht a liter. However, gasohol 91 will take a 2.50 baht cut, as it gets an additional 1.50 baht subsidy from the Oil Fuel Fund, Peeraphan said. – The Nation

No visa fees for Taiwanese, Indian tourists from Nov 10

Indian and Taiwan passport holders will now be able to enter Thailand without a visa from Nov. 10 to May 10 next year, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

Chiang Mai airport began around-the-clock services today with a Thai VietJet flight that left for Osaka at 12.30am. The airport had previousy operated 18 hours a day, from 6am to midnight.

Baby Deer Found Living Among Street Dogs Rescued by WFFT

When locals in a village in Thailand spotted a baby animal running around and barking near packs of street dogs, they immediately realized something was wrong. Despite the baby’s dog-like cries, he definitely wasn’t a dog — he was a muntjac deer who had wandered away from a nearby forest and was now all alone.

As soon as the villagers realized what was happening, they contacted Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) for help. The baby deer, later named Cha Lao, was only a few days old and clearly needed help. He was being chased by street dogs and would bark to try and keep them away. Continued …

Heavy rainfall to hit 43 Thai provinces

Bangkok returns to top 10 list of world’s most polluted cities as PM2.5 soars

Bangkok was listed among the world’s top 10 most polluted cities on Friday as levels of harmful PM2.5 dust soared to 48 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3). IQAir, a website that collects air quality data worldwide, ranked the Thai capital 10th in its global pollution list as of 7am on Friday.

While PM2.5 levels remain at safe levels in other parts of the country, they have risen beyond the safety threshold of 37.5μg/m3 in most areas of Bangkok, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported. Continued …

In a recent study published in Nutrients, researchers investigated whether the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) was associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms among medical students in Thailand.

Thailand’s EV initiative: Driving toward a greener future

The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace aging government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with its carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. The Thai EV initiative move was prompted by a notification issued by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, encouraging the use of EVs within the government sector.

Srettha’s order, issued via the Secretariat of the Cabinet, has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to collaborate with the Budget Bureau, the Office of the Council of State, and other relevant sectors to facilitate the procurement process for EVs. Mrigadayavan Palace 3-day reopening Oct 13-15

The historic Mrigadayavan Palace in Cha Am will temporarily reopen to the public for three days Oct. 13-15. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024

The can be viewed Oct. 13 from 1:30-4:30 pm, and on Oct. 14-15 from 9am-4:30 pm.

Admission fees are as follows:

Adults (both Thai nationals and foreigners: 90 baht per person
Higher education students and teachers: 60 baht per person
High school students and their teachers: 30 baht per person
Elementary school and kindergarten students, young children, teachers, priests, monks, the elderly, and people with special needs are encouraged to make a donation.

Navy Confirms Retrieving HTMS Sukhothai From Sea Off PKK

The Navy yesterday confirmed it is going ahead with its project to retrieve a sunken corvette from the Gulf of Thailand sea floor, while categorically dismissing allegations of non-transparency over it.

Navy spokesman Adm. Pokkhrong Monthatpalin said the Navy Fleet based at Sattahip will certainly have the sunken HTMS 442 Sukhothai retrieved by a private firm from the bottom of the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan, though six bidders had earlier failed to meet specifications under the 200-million-baht project’s terms of reference. A woman’s late-night drive took a slithery turn when a python surprised her by emerging from the engine compartment after she returned from a meal. At around 1am today, emergency services from the Thung Mahamek Fire Station were called to a parking lot in front of a convenience store in the Yan Nawa district of Bangkok.

In order to achieve post-election constitutional power, Thailand’s Pheu Thai party finds itself abed with its former enemies allied to the military junta, which seized power in 2014. It may seem a wobbly coalition, but it’s likely to last several years.

Pheu Thai fears that its erstwhile popularity will dip, or perhaps ditch, in a fresh general election. The military-backed parties may face wipe-out as younger Thais, in particular, clearly prefer the radical reformist policies of the Move Forward party now consigned to sit on the opposition benches. The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) has finished drafting a new operations plan to cope with climate change, the OAE chief said this week.

Chantanon Wannakhejorn, secretary-general of the OAE, which is under the Agriculture Ministry, said the OAE has worked with both state and private agencies in drafting the new plan, adding that the previous plan covering the period 2017-2022 had now expired, so the subcommittee responsible for enforcing policies on climate ambitions for land use and agriculture has been assigned to draw up a new one. An international motorcycle gang and a major Indonesian drug gang, both of whom had fled to Thailand, have been apprehended in a sweeping operation by the Thai Immigration Bureau (IB). The first significant arrest was that of Den, a German national wanted by his homeland’s authorities for a serious assault.
