Thai government to construct new elevated tollways by 2028

The Thai Transport Ministry unveiled plans to construct two new elevated tollways to improve commuting in the country. These tollways will be built from Pathum Thani to Ayutthaya and from Nonthaburi to western Bangkok, with a combined estimated cost of 87 billion baht.

One of the planned projects is an extension of the Don Mueang tollway, heading north from the Rangsit area in Pathum Thani to the Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya. Spanning a length of 22 kilometers, this elevated tollway is projected to cost around 31.28 billion baht. Continued …

More Thai hostages freed

House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha expressed his gratitude to those who were involved in the negotiations leading to the release of three Thai hostages held by Hamas on Sunday night.

Household debts in Thailand soar to 16 trillion baht

Thailand’s household debt at the end of the second quarter of this year stood at 16.07 trillion baht, up 3.6% compared to the same period last year, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said.

The NESDC announced on Monday that Thailand is struggling under a load of household debts, which account for 90.6% of the gross domestic product (GDP). This figure has remained unchanged from the first quarter of the year. Continued …

Thailand’s exports grow 8% in October

Thailand exported US$23.58 billion (828.22 billion baht) worth of goods in October, marking an 8% increase compared to the same month last year, a Commerce Ministry official said.

Pattaya tourism operators not all in on 4am closing

Pattaya’s tourism operators are against the proposal to extend the opening time of entertainment venues until 4am to include establishments located on the beachfront road, as it would cause more trouble with residents in the neighborhood and potentially further deteriorate the area’s reputation in relation to the sex industry.

Bangkok battles rising air pollution as PM2.5 dust levels exceed safe standards

Air pollution in Bangkok has recently spiked, with 17 locations across the city registering levels of PM2.5 dust particles that exceed safe standards.

The most severe pollution was recorded at the intersection of Mahajai and Phet Kasem 81 in Nong Khaem district, where the PM2.5 level reached 47 micrograms per cubic meter today. Thai abbot disappears from temple with more than 4.7 million baht

A Thai abbot belonging to a temple in the central province of Suphan Buri has disappeared, taking with him a sum of 717,186 baht contributed by local donors and over 4 million baht borrowed from nearly 40 individuals in the temple’s vicinity.

Meet the New Swedish Ambassador to Thailand

H.E. Anna Hammargren, was named the new Swedish ambassador to Thailand, on Oct. 23. Born in Solna, a prime settlement and municipality located just north of Stockholm, she spent all her childhood in nearby Sollentuna, also north of the capital.

In Sollentuna, Hammargren went to school and after finishing high school, she took a break from studying and decided – like many young Swedish women do – to spread her wings and go abroad. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said todayyesterday that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had called to inform that 20 out of 23 Thais held hostage by Hamas fighters are safe, while a search is underway for two to three other captives.

Wild ‘elephant migration’ causes a trunk-load of trouble in Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen, a northeastern province in Thailand, is currently experiencing an invasion of wild elephants from the neighboring province of Loei. The elephants, in search of food, have descended from the mountains of Phu Kradueng district, causing widespread destruction in two subdistricts – Boribun and Dong Lan in Si Chomphu district – of the province.

Economy is in troubled waters, with fears for both exports and foreign tourism

Thailand’s economy is facing uncertainty on all fronts as the year draws to a close, with a decline in the projected GDP growth for 2023 to only 2.7% and possibly as low as 2.2% due to concerns not only about the country’s export industry but now also a more sluggish rebound in foreign tourism than predicted, with the Kingdom on target to generate only 61% of the level of income seen in 2019.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to hold a public hearing to consider the new garbage collection and disposal fee this month following the expiration of the current rate on Oct. 1, Bangkok Deputy Gov. Jakkapan Phiewngam said on Monday.

Songkran forecast: Domestic tourism surge dampened by trickle of foreign arrivals

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects to see 13.5 billion baht in revenue from domestic tourism during the Songkran holidays (April 13-16), up 22% from 11 billion baht last year.

However, it is far less optimistic about foreign arrivals over the traditional New Year.

The tourism agency estimates Thais will make up to 3.8 million trips to domestic attractions this Songkran, a rise of 14% from the 3.34 million trips made last year. Continued …

Songkran spending to surge to Bt125 billion

Spending sentiment for the upcoming Songkran festival is expected to be lively as people have been hesitant for many months, but the country’s economy is showing signs of recovery, driven by rapidly reviving tourism.

According to the latest survey conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), spending during the festival is expected to increase by 17.3% to 125 billion baht, up from 107 billion in 2022. Continued …

Over 14,200 flights, 2.37 million passengers expected at 6 airports during Songkran week

As many as 14,220 flights are expected to be operated at six airports during the Songkran festival from April 11 to 17 this year, 59.6% higher than in the previous year, Airports of Thailand (AOT) said on Tuesday.

AOT runs Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang (Chiang Rai), Phuket and Hat Yai airports.

More than 67,000 foreign tourists, and 23,000 Thai tourists are expected to visit Surat Thani, including Samui Island, during the Songkran Festival period.

Surat Thani Gov.Vichawut Jintoe said from April 13 to April 16 the tourism authority is expecting to welcome 91,000 tourists.

Phuket Airport gains new direct flights to Vietnam and China

Phuket International Airport in southern Thailand is gaining two new direct flights to China and Vietnam. The first is to Chongqing in China operated by Chongqing Airlines and the second is the first-ever service from Phuket to Hanoi in Vietnam serviced by VietJet.

Shoppers’ Rebates, Property Tax Cut as New Year Gifts

The cabinet approved its “2023 New Year Gifts” as proposed by the Finance Ministry and they include rebates for shoppers and reduction in property tax and transfer fees.

Deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said that people who make purchases between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15, 2023, can receive personal income tax rebates worth up to 40,000 baht.

The rebate measure should have about 56 billion baht circulated in the economic system, the spokeswoman said. Continued …

Residents of a community in Hua Hin are being encouraged to compost their food waste and cut down on disposing of it in their household trash.

If you’re unfamiliar, composting is the act of turning food scraps and other materials into a nutrient soil. It’s one of the easiest ways to help the environment.

Elephant rescued from smugglers in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Authorities on Sunday arrested two men who were seen taking a female elephant across the Myanmar-Thai border in Huay Yang District in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The two arrested men were identified as Phongsak Huakaew, a 28-year-old Thai national, and Muytuya, a 28-year-old Myanmar man.

Phongsak was found to be the owner of the truck used by the men. He is known to have transported timber and elephants in the past and has a criminal record. Continued … 

‘There weren’t enough life vests on board’

An air and sea search for the 30 missing crew (some media report up to 33) of the HMS Sukhothai frigate continues. One crew member was found and rescued yesterday but fears remain for the welfare of the remainder of the missing crew.

It was also revealed this morning by a spokesperson for the Navy that there weren’t sufficient life vests available for all crew on the ill-fated vessel.

There were 106 crew on board HMS Sukhothai before the incident on Sunday evening around 11.30pm; 75 of the crew were rescued on the first day after life rafts were deployed. A nearby oil tanker responded to the vessels’ SOS alerts. Continued …

The shortest day of the year, known as winter solstice, will fall on Thursday (Dec. 22), the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit) said.

The winter solstice occurs when either of the Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun. This happens twice a year, once in the northern and once in the southern hemisphere.

Immigration police and labor officials investigated a clothing factory in Tak’s Mae Sot district on Tuesday following reports of slavery-like working conditions.

Cabinet approves operational plan for trillion-baht EEC smart city project

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the operational plan for a 1.35-trillion-baht business hub and smart city project in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said.

Under the plan, the city will be constructed by 2027 and developed as one of the world’s top 10 smart cities by 2037, said Ratchada.

Bangkok motorways toll-free over New Year holiday

Toll fees on two motorways – No 7 (Bangkok-Chonburi-Pattaya) and No 9 (Bang Pa In-Bang Phli-Bang Khun Tian) – will be waived for seven days of the New Year holidays, from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4, the Department of Highways said on Tuesday.

The move aims to minimize queues at toll booths and reduce costs for people visiting their relatives over New Year, said Director-general Sarawut Songwilai.

The department will also waive toll fees on Motorway No 6 (Bang Pa-in-Nakhon Ratchasima) between the Pak Chong and Kham Thalay Sor checkpoints, which are a gateway to northeast provinces. Continued …

Auto manufacturers likely to raise prices next year due to rising costs

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) on Tuesday predicted that auto manufacturers would raise the prices of vehicles next year because of rising costs.

FTI vice chairman and spokesman for the FTI’s Auto Industry Group Surapong Paisit-Pattanapong said rising labor and electricity costs would leave automakers with no choice but to raise their prices accordingly.

Surapong added, however, that the increase in auto retail prices would have no impact on the economic recovery. Continued …

4am Closing Time for Nightspots in Tourism Areas Postponed Indefinitely

The Cabinet has indefinitely postponed the proposed extension of nightlife venues’ legal closing time to 4 am from 2am, according to Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

He added that the Cabinet said this was not an appropriate time to do such a thing, given the current situation, without giving further details.

Thai AirAsia is setting goals for next year in line with tourism growth and revenue from the international market increasing to 60%, up from 40%, aiming for total passengers of at least 20 million.

Health minister confident COVID infections over New Year are controllable

Thailand’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is confident that COVID-19 infections during the New Year celebrations will be kept under control, as the Public Health Ministry is fully equipped with manpower and medical supplies to cope with the situation.

He did, however, express concern over those who are over 60, have kidney or heart diseases or cancer, saying that it is imperative that they get vaccinated or are fully vaccinated, to reduce the risk of severe symptoms.

He said that everyone should receive at least four doses of vaccine, which will enhance their ability to avoid serious illness if they become infected, adding that he has been informed that more people have recently been turning up for inoculation. Continued …

A respiratory specialist has advised people to protect themselves against Covid-19 with currently available vaccines rather than waiting for next-generation vaccines.

Dr. Manoon Leechawengwongs of Vichaiyut Hospital explained on Tuesday that the Covid virus is mutating too quickly for next-gen vaccines to keep up.

The next-gen vaccines will target the current dominant strain in Thailand, but this will soon be replaced by new Omicron subvariants, such as BQ.1 and XBB, said Manoon. The new-gen vaccines will not be as effective against these new subvariants, he added. Continued …
