Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. Continued …

Ministry to ease blow of fuel subsidy ending

The Energy Ministry is planning to launch measures to soften the impact of expiring biofuel price subsidies in 2027, as the fuels become more expensive, affecting palm and sugar cane growers.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Thailand’s digital economy continues to record strong double-digit growth, fueled by the rise of e-commerce, particularly video commerce and online travel services. In 2024, the country’s digital economy is expected to grow 19% over last year to US$46 billion on the basis of gross merchandise value (GMV).

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. Southeast Asia is the second most-affected region in the world when it comes to road accidents, after Africa, and Thailand “tragically leads in this statistics”, said UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt on Monday in Bangkok.

The director-general of Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has ordered an investigation into a trap that killed a wild elephant in Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, Loei Province. Meanwhile, the head of Protected Area Regional Office 8 has filed a police report at Phu Ruea Police Station, urging swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Authorities yesterday discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba subdistrict, Phu Ruea district. Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months

Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22% in volume and 45.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

He stated that white rice led exports with 4,702,455 tons (up 42%), followed by jasmine rice with 1,233,108 tons (up 9%), parboiled rice with 814,791 tons (down 28.2%), Thai fragrant rice with 487,587 tons (up 42.5%) and glutinous rice with 211,000 tons (up 15.7%). Continued …

Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. M16 rifle linked to over 25 deaths in southern Thailand

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) uhas nveiled its plan to keep Thailand’s diesel prices under 33 baht per liter, even though the current subsidy scheme is coming to a halt. This decision steers from an unexpected upturn in OFFO’s finances, courtesy of plummeting global oil prices.

Fiscal 2024’s figures saw a dip in OFFO’s losses, thanks to reduced outlays on domestic diesel subsidies. Although OFFO is sticking to its guns by supporting diesel prices through the fund, it has decided not to seek the cabinet’s go-ahead for extending the subsidy program, said Pornchai Jirakulpisan, the OFFO policy and strategy department chief. The ancient UNESCO-listed city that’s considered the cradle of Thai culture

Every year in Thailand, on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar – usually in November – thousands of locals and tourists head for the nearest body of water to celebrate Loy Krathong.

As part of the festival, people release small floats – krathongs – that are commonly covered in decorative banana plant leaves and topped with flowers, incense and candles. These are set adrift as offerings to the water goddess, an act many people believe brings luck. Continued …

Thailand boosts climate resilience in coastal areas with UN grant

Thailand is enhancing its capacity to tackle the escalating threat of climate change, particularly in its marine and coastal areas. This initiative, a collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is titled “Increasing Resilience to Climate Change Impacts in Marine and Coastal Areas along the Gulf of Thailand”, and is supported by a US$3 million (101.2 million baht) grant from the Green Climate Fund.

Since its launch in August 2020, this four-year project aims to create effective solutions to mitigate Thailand’s vulnerability to climate change, with Rayong, Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, and Songkhla selected as pilot regions. Continued …

Developing countries begin to say no to waste colonialism from developed nations

Despite China’s ban on solid waste imports three years ago, developed countries continue to exploit regulatory loopholes to export waste to developing countries, including China, avoiding higher recycling costs at home. Other developing countries, such as those in Southeast Asia, alongside China, have increasingly restricted foreign waste imports, but this has not halted the practice.

A key driver of this issue is the profitability and low risk of waste trafficking. Developed countries, aiming to cut costs, use “waste colonialism” as a tactic, exporting plastic and other low-value waste, Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs says. Bangkok police detained seven individuals yesterday, including six officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, linked to an elaborate Bt300-million extortion scheme involving a fake search warrant and passport forgery accusations. The suspects, led by Police Lt. Col. Chanchai, are charged with extortion, misconduct, and abuse of power.

Bangkokians will soon need to shell out 60 baht per month for garbage collection instead of 20 baht now that the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) has approved a long overdue hike.

Thai economy continued to grow in Q3, but slowed in September

Thailand’s economy in the third quarter this year expanded from the previous quarter, but economic activities began slowing in September, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said in its monthly report on economic and monetary conditions.

The central bank said the trend in September was mainly the decline of exports after strong growth in August. Private consumption also declined, it said, particularly in durables, consistent with a decrease in manufacturing production, while private investment was stable. Continued …

Thai FDA to intensify fruit and vegetable screening after toxic residues found

The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced plans to intensify the screening of fruits and vegetables for consumer safety. Following the detection of 50 types of toxic residues in Shine Muscat grapes, there has been growing concern over the safety of imported produce among Thai consumers.

Thai-PAN (Pesticide Alert Network) revealed on Oct. 24 that an analysis of 24 samples from 15 locations in Greater Bangkok showed contamination with seven to 18 types of toxic residues, with 23 samples exceeding legal limits for up to six toxins. Continued …

Ministry pegs growth goal at 3.5%

The Finance Ministry has set a lofty economic growth target of 3.5% for next year. In his keynote speech at the CEO Econmass Awards 2024, organized by the Economic Reporters Assn. on Wednesday, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said the growth rate next year is expected to be about 10% higher than this year, potentially reaching 3%.

“This 3% rate does not take into account the opportunities or potential Thailand has. Historically, Thailand’s GDP has grown as high as 5%-6%,” said Pichai. Continued …

Manufacturing index slips in September

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) fell by 3.5% year-on-year to 92.4 points in September, due mainly to sluggish car and construction industries, while the outcome of the U.S. presidential election may pose a fresh challenge in this year’s final quarter, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

The decline in September led to the MPI dropping in the third quarter by 1.2% year-on-year to 94.7 points, with capacity utilization standing at 58.2%. Continued …

Thailand sees more businesses registered in 2024, but less capital

The Business Development Department saw the registration of 69,686 new businesses in the first nine months of this year, the department’s chief said on Wednesday. Oramon Sapthaweetham, the department’s director-general, said 1,021, or 1.49% more, businesses had registered this year compared to the same period last year.

Registered capital, however, was 285.89 billion baht or 57.8% less compared to last year, she said. The combined capital of the newly registered businesses as of September came in at 208.48 billion baht, Oramon added. Continued …

Exports to US jumped 18.1% in September amid 1.1% overall growth

Thailand’s exports to the United States in September grew 18.1% year on year to the value of US$5.01 billion (169.13 billion baht), the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) said on Monday.

By the end of 2025, an estimated 85 million electric vehicles (EVs), including cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks, are expected to be on the road, according to the latest forecast from U.S.-based research firm Gartner Inc. released on Monday.

The Thailand Consumers Council is urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take legal action against importers of Shine Muscat grapes after lab tests showed some samples were contaminated with chemicals that are banned in Thailand.

According to TCC, 23 out of 24 Shine Muscat grape samples tested by the council last week were found to be contaminated with hazardous chemical residues beyond the acceptable legal limit. Explosion at Thai zinc factory kills 2 Burmese workers, injures 28

A devastating explosion at a zinc production facility in Kabin Buri district, Prachinburi, has left two Burmese workers dead and 28 others injured. The incident unfolded yesterday, with Thai national media reporting that around 70 employees were on-site at the time, out of a total workforce of 232.

Local officials from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command confirmed that all victims are migrant workers from Myanmar. One worker tragically died instantly at the scene, while another passed away from his injuries at Kabin Buri Hospital. Continued …

Tourism Levy will take at least six months to implement even after a cabinet decision

Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Surawong Thienthong, last week again committed the government to introducing the long-awaited foreign tourist levy. The measure has divided the foreign tourism industry in Thailand. New tourism tax won’t affect foreign residents or workers

Phuket’s office of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MoTS) has confirmed that the upcoming tourism tax, expected to be implemented early next year, will not impact foreigners who reside or work in Thailand.

A MoTS Phuket official clarified that the proposed tax has not yet been presented to the Cabinet for approval. “We should wait for any further information because now the tourist tax has not yet gone to Cabinet, and some things may change once it goes into Cabinet,” the official stated. Mekong hydropower projects said pose risks to Thai environment, economy

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says transboundary hydropower dam projects along the Mekong River pose a risk to Thailand’s environment, economy and community safety.

In a letter submitted to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the NHRC said it had outlined its concerns regarding four hydropower dam projects: the Ban Koum Dam, the Sanakham Dam, the Phou Ngoy Dam and the Pak Chom Dam, all on the Lower Mekong along the Thai-Lao border.
