Mueang Prachuap reservoir drops to 11% capacity

The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) of Prachuap Khiri Khan has urged residents in the mueang district to store sufficient water for personal use, as drought has significantly impacted the region’s water supply.

NBTC unveils bold plan to untangle Bangkok’s cables

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) has finally devised a plan to deal with the tangled mess of communication cables that hang over Bangkok and nearby provinces.

Almost 3 per day injured on Bangkok sidewalks, most by motorbikes

Bangkok has launched a pedestrian safety campaign in response to data showing an average 915 people are injured on Bangkok pavements each year, or almost three per day.

Most sidewalk injuries are caused by rogue pavement motorcyclists, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. It cited new figures from the National Statistical Office showing Bangkok accounts for over a third of the annual average 2,490 sidewalk injuries nationwide. Continued …

Global gold prices are set to touch US$2,500 per ounce in the latter half of this year, as per predictions by local gold traders, despite a recent slump below US$2,300. The market has scaled down its expectations for U.S. interest rate cuts this year to a maximum of two times, a reduction from the previously anticipated three to four times.

British tourist faces 20 years in jail for cocaine hidden in passport

Jamie Louis Swain, 29, from Enfield, North London, could face up to 20 years in a Thai prison after reportedly being caught with cocaine hidden in his passport. Swain was arrested at Phuket International Airport on his arrival on an Etihad Airways flight on Thursday night.

An immigration officer discovered a small plastic bag filled with white powder in Swain’s passport during routine checks for visa stamping. Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

Heavy rains forecast for mid-May

After enduring severe drought, residents of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province may finally see significant rainfall, as the dry season is expected to end soon. Thailand needs economic reform, not stimulus

Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.

Foreigners and their overseas income: what next?

More than three months after “assessable” foreign income became taxable, many of Thailand’s expats are still swimming in a sea of uncertainty. Lots of advice online, but few definite answers. Senior officers from the Revenue (Department) have said little of late, although there has been a half-promise to the Swiss ambassador in a televised interview to print the tax identification forms in English as well as in Thai.

There is a view among some Thai lawyers that we must wait until July for clarification on nitty-gritty issues such as double taxation treaties and the tax status of pensions. Despite a return of a current account surplus and the prospect of a better economy in 2024, the baht on Wednesday again broke theBt37 barrier point against the dollar. Today it was ฿37.15. It came after the Bank of Thailand intervened to temporarily keep from breaching it.

The baht has been falling since the beginning of 2024. The reasons, of course, are complex, but essentially there is a lack of confidence, at this time, in the kingdom’s economic planning. Central bank calls for review of digital wallet scheme

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has suggested that the government restrict the digital wallet cash benefit scheme to around 15 million financially vulnerable individuals, instead of the planned 50 million in its proposal. According to the BoT, this modification in the plan, costing 150 billion baht, can be effective immediately.

Yet, the government has dismissed the bank’s proposal, stating there are no new elements in the recommendations. The BoT identifies low-income earners and state welfare card holders as the “fragile” category. Continued …

Japanese account for more than half of total foreign investments in Q1

Thailand received nearly 36 billion baht in investments from foreigners during the first quarter of the year, the Department of Business Development said.

Japanese investors topped the list, accounting for 19.006 billion of the 35.902 billion baht invested by foreigners, or more than half, Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the department, said. A total of 178 foreign nationals had been permitted to invest in businesses during January-March under the Foreign Business Act BE 2542 (1999). Home building market set to grow despite challenges

Thailand’s home building market is showing signs of growth this year, even though rising costs, a labor shortage, and buyer sentiment remain major challenges, Worawut Kanchanakul, president of the Home Builders Assn., said on Tuesday. His confidence stems from the government’s approval on April 9 of new measures aimed at boosting the country’s real-estate sector.

The measures include lowering property registration and transfer fees, extending a reduction in mortgage fees to properties valued up to 7 million baht, providing tax breaks for individuals who build their own homes, and raising the value threshold of properties developed by companies eligible for the Board of Investment’s tax incentive from 1 million baht to 1.5 million baht. Car production down 23.1% y/y in March

Car production in Thailand dropped 23.08% in March from a year earlier to 138,331 units, the Federation of Thai Industries said today.

The figure compared with February’s 19.28% year-on-year drop. In the January-March period, car production fell 18.45% from a year earlier to 414,123 units, the FTI said. Continued …

Temperatures could rise to 43 °C today

Much of Thailand will experience extreme heat today, the Thai Meteorological Department warns, with temperatures in some areas likely to peak at 43°C. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, particularly in the southern region, with rainfall covering around 30% of the area.

The Bangkok metropolitan region will bake under partly cloudy skies with a maximum temperature of 41°C. The public are advised to take care of their health and avoid working outdoors or engaging in outdoor activities for extended periods. Continued … 

How many more lives have to be lost to restless driving?

Over the weekend, social media was buzzing with yet another accident, this time a pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle while he was trying to cross the zebra crossing – and this zebra crossing had traffic signals to stop vehicles for the pedestrian to be able to cross.

The video shows that the pedestrian waited for the zebra crossing’s light to turn green (meaning the pedestrian could cross, while the vehicles had to stop), before he opted to cross. He managed to cross the street on one side but as soon as he stepped on to the second road to cross, an oncoming motorcycle did not stop on the red light and slammed the pedestrian. Continued …

COVID-19 surges during Songkran festival

More than a thousand people were admitted for treatment of COVID-19 infections between April 14-20, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director of the Department of Disease Control. Of those admitted to hospitals, 292 are suffering from lung infections and 101 require ventilators to help with breathing. Three have died and all were either elderly people or had comorbidities.

Thongchai said that the surge in COVID cases during the Songkran festival was not unexpected and most of the cases were found in and around Bangkok and in tourist provinces. Continued …

Younger patients’ neck pain rises, smartphone overuse a key factor

Construction coordinator Jonathan Wu found himself often glued to his mobile devices during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, and because he was working from home, his lifestyle was sedentary. At the time, he was no longer visiting project sites, and he attended meetings online using his smartphone or computer.

Part of Kanchanaburi Motorway open for toll-free travel on weekends

A segment of the Kanchanaburi Motorway, from Nakhon Pathom West to Kanchanaburi, will be temporarily opened for toll-free travel on weekends. The toll-free travel over a 51km distance starts from April 26. Only private four-wheelers are allowed on the motorway. Vehicles should have sufficient fuel/charge for the journey. Eateries push for casinos in 2nd-tier regions

The Thai Restaurant Assn. is asking the government to consider building an integrated entertainment complex, featuring casino, hotel, shopping mall, amusement park and restaurants, in a second-tier area, promoting local dishes to sell in the complex.

“Neighboring countries have their own casinos and many Thais cross the borders to gamble at them,” said Thaniwan Kulmongkol, president of the association, adding Thailand has many entertainment complexes, but no casinos. Continued …

About 3,000 Myanmar nationals flee fighting to Tak

About 3,000 Myanmar people fled Myawaddy to Mae Sot district of Tak to take refuge from escalating battles between Myanmar junta forces and ethnic troops, according to officials.

Foreign Affairs Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara said on Sunday that the number of Myanmar refugees in Mae Sot rose to about 3,000 and they were under supervision of the Interior Ministry. Continued …

Thai government’s OFOS project to create 20 million jobs from June

The Thai government has plans to set in motion the One Family One Soft Power (OFOS) project in June, hoping to generate 20 million employment opportunities with a minimum yearly wage of 200,000 baht, according to Paetongtarn Shinawatra, head of the National Committee on Soft Power Development and leader of the Pheu Thai party.

Paetongtarn shed light on the forthcoming OFOS, disclosing that the scheme will offer free-of-charge up-skilling and re-skilling courses. Citizens can register for these courses beginning in early June via an online platform like an application or website, as well as through local offices of the National Village Fund and the Urban Community Office. Songkran festival sees surge in road accidents across Thailand

Thailand is grappling with a surge in road accidents, with an alarming tally of 2,044 mishaps leading to 2,060 injuries and a tragic loss of 287 lives. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) released these figures as part of their Seven Days of Road Safety Campaign, which covered the Songkran festival period from April 11 to April 17.

The northern province of Chiang Rai topped the list for the highest number of fatalities and accidents, recording 17 deaths and 82 accidents, respectively. The province of Phrae unfortunately, saw the most injuries with a total of 80 individuals affected. Continued …

The Cabinet on Thursday approved the budget bill for fiscal 2025, with government spending totaling 3.752 trillion baht, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said. The bill has allocated 3.752 trillion baht for government spending in fiscal 2025, which begins on Oct. 1.

Aiming to capitalize on the government’s initiative to make Thailand a medical hub in Southeast Asia, Thai firm Namwiwat Medical Corp. (NAM) and Taiwanese company Somnics Inc. have joined forces to construct a new manufacturing plant. The facility, intended to serve as an export base, will produce a wide range of medical products, including sleep-enhancing devices.

NAM, a local sterilized medical equipment provider, and Somnics, a Zhubei-based firm specializing in obstructive sleep apnea treatment technologies, formalized their collaboration with a memorandum of understanding signed recently. As the extended Songkran holiday wrapped up on Tuesday, tourists bid farewell to the sun-kissed islands surrounding Pattaya, turning the Bali Hai Pier area into a buzzing hub of activity. Local authorities ramped up services to cater to the influx, ensuring convenience for visitors throughout the holiday period.

Officers stationed at the pier witnessed an influx of tourists from April 12 to 15, with an average of 30,000 Thai visitors and foreign tourists per day seeking leisure and relaxation on the islands. To me, the most awe-inspiring moment is watching the sunrise at Hua Hin beach. As the first light of dawn slowly seeps into the sky, life comes to a standstill. The sun soon emerges from behind the horizon, casting its warm and vibrant glow over the beach. The fishing boats in the distance begin to set out for the day’s first catch, and the silhouettes of Monkey Mountain and the Buddha statue are bathed in golden hues. The ocean, playing its role in the spectacle, provides the perfect soundtrack with the gentle rhythm of waves kissing the sand. Continued …
