New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport. Online ticketing and advance bookings are still in the works.

  • The bus will leave Hua Hin at 7 am and 2 pm
  • It will depart from Don Mueang at 7:30 am and 4 pm

Bangkok Bank is complying with CRS and FATCA regulations:

A total of 2,021 hotspots have been detected in 17 northern and western provinces today by a Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) satellite, signaling the return of wildfires and airborne pollution in the north.

Most of the country to experience thundershowers until Tuesday

The north, northeast, central including Bangkok, and eastern regions will experience a hot day and isolated thundershowers today, the Thai Meteorological Department said. These conditions are due to the southerly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the upper country, the department said.

Isolated thundershowers are forecast in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla; minimum 21-26°C, maximum 31-35°C; waves about 1-2 meters high and above 2 meters high in thundershowers. Continued … 

Bangkok mulls ‘integrated’ bus terminal

The Ministry of Transport is considering moving the capital’s inter-provincial bus terminals to Krungthep Aphiwat Central Terminal in an effort to ensure a seamless connection for travelers with the city’s mass transport network.

Inside a Thai military camp, four Ethiopian men yesterday showed the bruises and scars on their bodies they said were sustained during their time in one of Myanmar’s most notorious scam compounds. “I got a lot of punishments,” said 19-year-old Yotor, who gave only one name and had cuts along his leg. “I received electric shocks every day.”

New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …

I’m having a moment with a 31-year-old female Asian elephant called Mea Buab. Standing behind a fence under the supervision of her mahout (an elephant keeper or owner), Janwan, Mea Buab has snorted several bucket-loads of pulped banana, pineapple and sugar cane up the immense nostril of her whisker-pricked trunk. “Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

The 2024 remittance tax changes have introduced complexities that some local tax offices — especially in provincial areas — may not yet fully understand. Many expats have reported difficulties due to inconsistent guidance, as well as language barriers when trying to clarify their tax position.

“In cases like U.S. Social Security, the rules are clear: it is not taxable in Thailand, nor does it need to be included on a Thai tax return. However, misunderstandings at the local level can lead to unnecessary stress and potential disputes with tax authorities.

“For expats looking to avoid these difficulties, using a professional tax filing service can help ensure compliance while avoiding the frustration of dealing with tax offices unfamiliar with international tax agreements.”

Bangkok and 53 of the 76 provinces were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, with very thick smog levels blanketing mostly the central plain and the east, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Top Thai Officers Probed Over Links to Scams in Myanmar

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. This action follows the transfer of five senior officers from Tak province, a move that has raised eyebrows due to the significant wealth of one of the officers.

At the heart of the investigation is Police Maj Gen Ekkarat Intasueb, acting chief of Inspection Division 6 for the Office of the Inspector General. His duties encompass seven provinces, including Tak, which is directly opposite Myawaddy — a known hub for scam syndicates. Myanmar to Repatriate 7,000 Call Center Scam Victims to Thailand

Myanmar is preparing to return approximately 7,000 victims of call center scams to Thailand. Phumtham Wechayachai, deputy prime minister and defense minister, confirmed this plan, stressing that these victims should be repatriated directly to their home countries without being temporarily housed in Thailand.

Thailand moving to cut power, internet, fuel supply to Cambodia

After cutting electricity, internet and fuel supply from five points to Myanmar border townships where scam centers are operating, Deputy Prime Minister/Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is now expanding this strategy to three districts and an island in four provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border to suppress transnational criminals holed up across that border.

Hotel room rates in Thailand rose last year by an average of 15% from 2023, making it the only country to achieve double-digit growth, according to SiteMinder, an e-commerce platform that helps hotels sell rooms on their own websites and through third parties.

The company’s Hotel Booking Trends report, based on more than 125 million reservations – the largest volume of hotel reservations from any single platform – shows that the average daily rate (ADR) in Thailand increased to 5,377 baht from 4,648 baht in 2023. Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“I just returned from the Prachuap Khiri Khan tax office at the Prachuap provincial office (Not Hua Hin). I had my total amount that was transferred to fill in their forms, as well as proof the the monies were from Social Security office.

“While speaking to the personnel, they asked my wife where did my money come from. My wife showed them my form 1099 that showed how much was paid to me from the SSI. They then told her that all of that income on that piece of paper would be taxed and I would need to pay thousands on it to their office. I tried to explain to them (with wife’s help in Thai) that the DTA for SSI to Thailand is not taxable.” Continued …

A 67-year-old man was fatally crushed by a wild elephant yesterday while inspecting his palm plantation in Khao Sam Roi Yot District.

The head of Kui Buri National Park confirmed the death of Chaliyo from Sam Roi Yot District, who was found lying on his back with severe injuries after being trampled by an elephant. The attack took place outside the boundaries of Kui Buri National Park, at a palm plantation in Ban Lak Lor, Sao Lai Subdistrict, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Continued …

Sixty-seven of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, with the worst smog blanketing greater Bangkok, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTA).

In descending order of PM2.5 levels, 20 other provinces shrouded with red levels were Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Ratchaburi, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Nong Khai, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Prachin Buri, Saraburi, Rayong, Suphan Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Nayok, Lop Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Uthai Thani, Chanthaburi, Kalasin and Sa Kaeo. Thailand will officially enter the summer season at the end of February, with high temperatures lasting until May, the Thailand Meteorological Department announced yesterday. The Thai summer is characterized by a hot southerly wind covering the upper part of the country, it added.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered a review of the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm following calls by business groups for eased regulations to support tourism.

The ban is not covered in the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act. It was announced in a decree by the coup regime of Thanom Kittikachorn in 1972 to deal with officials drinking during work hours, and has never been rescinded. Continued …

Russian Tourist Dies After Sliding into the Sea from Tour Boat in Pattaya

A 33-year-old Russian tourist lost his life yesterday after sliding from a water slide at the rear of a tour boat near Koh Sak, off the coast of Pattaya.

Rescue personnel from Pattaya’s marine disaster response team and the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene by speedboat. A significant spiritual event is currently taking place at Uttaradit’s famous Wat Phra Thaen Sila At. Though the royal temple in the Laplae district is renowned for its sacred laterite slab dating as far back as the Sukhothai period (1238-1438), it also boasts a towering 10-meter-tall jujube tree that stands tall on the temple grounds. It is believed that this tree is a descendant of the tree where the Buddha instructed his disciple Ananda to hang his alms bowl.

Smog again covers much of Thailand, PKK at orange level

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 48 out of the 76 Thai provinces, and Bangkok, today, with red levels in parts of the central plain and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported.

Forty-one provinces were shrouded with orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 38.6 to 73.3µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Regional deal signed to combat PM2.5 pollution

Thailand has signed an agreement with the entire membership of ASEAN to jointly deal with PM2.5, which is considered to be a transboundary haze. The harmful levels of PM2.5, from domestic and overseas sources, can affect the image of Thailand as an investment destination in Southeast Asia, according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

Security officers yesterday intercepted the smuggling of solar panels and fuel to Myanmar in separate incidents in this border western province. Colder weather forecast for most of Thailand until Monday

The Thai Meteorological Department today forecast a decrease in temperature by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the northeast and by 2-4°C in the remaining regions except for the lower south from today to Monday. Thailand reports 1.3% inflation in January

The headline consumer price index (CPI) in Thailand rose 1.32% in January from a year earlier, after an increase of 1.2% the month before, the Ministry of Commerce said today.
