Probe into missing oil-smuggling ships linked to police force

An investigation into officers involved with the three missing seized oil-smuggling vessels is underway after a leaked chat showed a connection between some police and the mastermind of the oil smuggling gang.

The three seized ships, containing 330,000 liters of smuggled oil, had been docked at the marine police pier in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district along with two other seized vessels on March 19. 15,000 lose their jobs so far in 2024

The industrial sector remains lackluster as the Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to fall in May to 88.5 from 90.3 points, with 15,000 workers losing their jobs since early this year, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Loei gears up for Phi Ta Khon Festival

PM Tests Positive for Covid-19

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tested positive for Covid-19 and is advised to rest until Wednesday. The prime minister’s office confirmed the diagnosis late last night, revealing that Srettha has been feeling unwell since Friday.

New highly-transmissible Covid strain will elude vaccines: expert

The KP.2 strain of Covid-19 will become dominant in Thailand, according to a renowned virologist. It will be more transmissible and vaccines will be hard-pressed to keep up with its mutations, but its symptoms will not be more severe than those of previous strains of the virus.

Economist warns of further industry closures

Woman in Hua Hin Arrested for Allegedly Organizing Fake Weddings

Thai cyber police have apprehended a woman believed to be at the center of an elaborate wedding scam in Hua Hin. Wimonrat, the alleged mastermind behind this matrimonial fraud, has left many couples high and dry after pocketing substantial deposits for venue and wedding preparations that never materialized.

Wimonrat, a 37-year-old resident of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, was a wanted individual with no less than three different arrest warrants issued against her. These date back to early 2021 from courts across Thailand, including Samut Prakan Provincial Court, Chon Buri District Court, and Thon Buri Criminal Court. Thailand needs economic reform, not stimulus

Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.

Agencies join forces to digitize government

The Thai Chamber of Commerce is working with the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC) and the Business Development Department to link corporate information electronically, facilitating paperless procedures and generating cost savings for residents and entrepreneurs of up to 7 billion baht per year.

Digital wallet scheme approved in principle by Cabinet

Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, minister of tourism and sports, reported that the Economics Tourism and Sports Division has summarized the latest information on Thai and foreign tourists during the Songkran Festival 2024, from April 1-21.

Arrivals set to soar amid holidays in East Asia

Chinese and Japanese tourists are expected to flock to Thailand during the Labor Day holiday and Japan’s Golden Week, driving arrivals to 996,000, up 29% from the corresponding period last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Much of Thailand will experience extreme heat today, the Thai Meteorological Department warns, with temperatures in some areas likely to peak at 43°C. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, particularly in the southern region, with rainfall covering around 30% of the area.

Over the weekend, social media was buzzing with yet another accident, this time a pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle while he was trying to cross the zebra crossing – and this zebra crossing had traffic signals to stop vehicles for the pedestrian to be able to cross.

The video shows that the pedestrian waited for the zebra crossing’s light to turn green (meaning the pedestrian could cross, while the vehicles had to stop), before he opted to cross. He managed to cross the street on one side but as soon as he stepped on to the second road to cross, an oncoming motorcycle did not stop on the red light and slammed the pedestrian. Continued …

COVID-19 surges during Songkran festival

More than a thousand people were admitted for treatment of COVID-19 infections between April 14-20, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director of the Department of Disease Control. Of those admitted to hospitals, 292 are suffering from lung infections and 101 require ventilators to help with breathing. Three have died and all were either elderly people or had comorbidities.

Thongchai said that the surge in COVID cases during the Songkran festival was not unexpected and most of the cases were found in and around Bangkok and in tourist provinces. Continued …

Part of Kanchanaburi Motorway open for toll-free travel on weekends

A segment of the Kanchanaburi Motorway, from Nakhon Pathom West to Kanchanaburi, will be temporarily opened for toll-free travel on weekends. Eateries push for casinos in 2nd-tier regions

The Thai Restaurant Assn. is asking the government to consider building an integrated entertainment complex, featuring casino, hotel, shopping mall, amusement park and restaurants, in a second-tier area, promoting local dishes to sell in the complex.
