Toxic air crisis: Dust levels ‘red’ in most of Thailand

Ultrafine dust levels were in the red (hazardous-to-health) in 46 out of the 76 provinces and in greater Bangkok this morning, with only 10 provinces reporting moderate to good air quality.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTFA) reported at 8am that particulate matter 2.5 micrometrs and less in diameter (PM2.5) was at red levels in 46 provinces and at orange (starting to affect health) levels in 21 provinces. The Ministry of Public Health is set to recommend a nationwide work from home directive next week after PM2.5 ultrafine dust pollution surpassed safe thresholds in nearly every province yesterday, with greater Bangkok experiencing the highest levels.

PM2.5 impacted 1 million Thais, cost Bt3 billion last year: Health Ministry

Over 1 million people have been treated for health conditions linked to PM2.5 air pollution in the past fiscal year (October 2023-December 2024), costing the country around 3 billion baht in healthcare expenses, the Public Health Ministry reported on Monday.

A total of 1,048,015 people sought treatment for six PM2.5-related conditions over the 12 months, ranked as follows: Dermatitis (442,073 patients), conjunctivitis (357,104), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (226,423), asthma (18,336), acute coronary syndrome (4,051), and diseases from direct contact with air pollution (28). The baht is likely to strengthen further after it appreciated beyond 34 to the dollar yesterday, as Donald Trump’s inauguration speech disappointed investors, prompting heavy selling of the dollar for profit-taking, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Cambodian police free US man who was kidnapped in Thailand, smuggled across border

Cambodian authorities successfully rescued a man who was kidnapped in Thailand, drugged, and transported to Cambodia, where he was held captive. At the same time, his captors attempted to extort a ransom from his family.

According to the National Police, the victim, identified as Yu Emil, is an American citizen of Taiwanese descent. The rescue operation was conducted on Jan. 15, a day after the victim’s family reported the incident through the Ministry of Interior. Continued …

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday declared that a global corporate minimum tax deal “has no force or effect” in the U.S,, effectively pulling America out of the landmark 2021 arrangement negotiated by the Biden administration with nearly 140 countries.

Thai cabinet approves carbon tax

The cabinet yesterday agreed to levy a carbon tax of 200 baht per ton of carbon emissions as part of the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul. The tax, however, will be included in the existing oil tax and will not affect the retail price of oil and oil products, Paopoom said.

The measure is a change in the internal structure of the excise tax that calculates the carbon price embedded in the oil tax, he said. Continued …

Power tariff faces trim of 17 satang at expense of renewable energy

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) expects to reduce the power tariff by 0.17 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), leading to cheaper electricity bills, if the government agrees to reduce its spending on a policy to promote investment in renewable energy.

Belgian tourist dies kite surfing in Pranburi

A Belgian man lost his life yesterday while kitesurfing off Pranburi’s coastline. The victim, identified as Mr. Brendan, 55, was swept onto rocks by powerful waves at Khao Kalok, located within the Thaokosa Forest Park in Pak Nam Pran, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Local police were alerted to the incident in the evening after the kitesurfer failed to return to shore. Emergency services, including rescue volunteers and forest park officials, responded swiftly, but the challenging weather conditions, including high tides and strong waves, made the rescue operation extremely hazardous. Transwoman robbed by teenager in Hua Hin

Wage hike unlikely to spur inflation

The recent minimum wage hike should have a mild impact on inflation, according to the Commerce Ministry. Citing analysis of the impact of the minimum wage increase on headline inflation, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, said the recent hike would raise inflation by 0.15% to 0.30%, keeping the rate within a range of 0.3-1.3% for 2025.

Expats in Thailand warned of scams targeting bank accounts

A chief of police issued a warning to retirees in Thailand after two British expats in Pattaya were targetted by scammers attempting to drain their bank accounts. Police Lt. Col. Saksit Choobunrueang yesterday, announced that the elderly are being targetted by scam gangs because of their limited knowledge of technology.

The retirees, both residents of Thailand, received separate phone calls from the fraudsters claiming they might not need to register for a TIN (tax identification number), provided some routine checks confirmed their exemption. Continued …

Air pollution hazardous or moderately dangerous to health was detected in 58 out of 77 provinces across Thailand this morning.

Air pollution soars in Thai capital again, surpassing safety standards

Bangkok was ranked ninth among countries with the poorest air quality worldwide today. The capital’s air quality index surged to 163 as of 9am, higher than the safe standard of 0-50, according to the IQAir website.

Upper Thailand to get colder, heavy rain forecast for south

Another strong high-pressure system from China will extend to Thailand and the South China Sea from Friday to Monday, causing a decrease in temperature and strong winds in the area, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning today.

Big boost in air travel over the New Year holiday

A retired nurse from Trang’s Mueang district has traded scrubs for feathers, earning a tidy nest egg by raising ostriches and selling their eggs and chicks. Expat tax returns due by March 31

Editor: We posted this news Saturday but several of our readers reported that the online site is in Thai only. We checked and translation is available in English, and in other languages if you use most any major Google or Microsoft platform – by right-clicking on the site. However, we found navigating the site dificult and could not find where to even start a filing.

There is also the question of how the dozens of dual tax treaties will be handled online – 95% of expats residing in Thailand reportedly come from countries with dual tax treaties with Thailand. Each one of those treaties is different. (information provided by Thai Examiner)

Highlights:
  • All income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year is declarable;
  • all expats who have been residents of Thailand for 180 days or more in the course of the last year are liable to file a return;
  • taxpayers should use the D-MyTax (Digital MyTax) system;
  • the income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin;
  • for most foreign expats on basic incomes such as Bt60,000 a month, the tax bill is approximately Bt11,000;
  • only electronic forms will be accepted until April 8, 2025; paper returns must be received by the end of March;
  • the return pertains to taxable income earned within Thailand and remitted to Thailand during 2024;
  • 95% of foreign expats originate from countries that have tax treaties with Thailand,
  • each country’s treaty with the kingdom is substantially different;
  • each individual residing in Thailand has unique circumstances, complicating the matter, particularly with the differences in tax treaties;
  • it is unclear how each individual’s situation will be treated;
  • the Thai government is reportedly drafting legislation to increase the tax burden on foreign residents, meaning that foreign residents in the kingdom will eventually be liable to pay tax on their worldwide income;
  • an independent survey showed that 16% of people plan to take professional advice, while a full 58% would not file a return at all;
  • 55% of expats in the survey are considering relocating to avoid spending 180 days in the country.

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

Tiger spotted in Kui Buri after a decade

Road Crashes Claim 272 Lives Over New Year’s Dangerous First Six Days

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has released its latest figures for road accidents during the New Year festivities. On Jan. 1 alone, 50 fatalities were recorded, bringing the total death toll to 272 over the notorious first “six dangerous days.”

New measures have been put in place to support efforts to save more dugongs, after several were found dead recently, says Natural Resources and Environment Minister Chalermchai Sri-on.

Holiday road accidents claim 143 lives across Thailand

The number of road accidents in the first three days of New Year holiday travel neared 900, with more than 140. fatalities. Ayutthaya recorded the most accidents while Bangkok logged the most deaths.

Thai police are searching for three Korean tourists who were occupants of the room where a deadly fire originated at The Ember Hotel near Khao San Road, Bangkok. The Sunday night blaze resulted in three foreign tourist fatalities due to smoke inhalation.

During an inspection of the fire scene uesterday, Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, reported that the six-story hotel’s structure on Tani Road remained intact. National parks to waive entry fees for Thai tourists on Dec 31-Jan 1

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) will waive entry fees to all national parks nationwide for Thais on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, a government spokesperson said yesterday.

45th Dugong Carcass Found in the Andaman Sea in 2024

A male juvenile dugong, emaciated and with barnacles attached to its body, was discovered washed ashore near the Ban Bo Mamuang Pier in Khlong Thom District, Krabi. This marks the 45th dugong carcass found in the Andaman Sea this year.

Preliminary examinations revealed that the carcass belonged to a male dugong measuring 200 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 100 kilograms. The animal was not yet fully grown and appeared malnourished. No significant injuries or fishing-related wounds were found. This discovery is the third dugong carcass reported in the last four days. 57 sugar mills ordered to suspend operations until Jan 2 to address air pollution
