The government will start buying invasive fish species blackchin tilapia at 15 baht per kilogram starting next month at 49 buying stations in 14 provinces, the Agriculture and Cooperatives ministry said on Monday.
The 49 buying stations will be located at fish markets registered with the Fisheries Department in 14 provinces where high numbers of invasive fish have been reported. Riverside residents and businesses along the Chao Phraya River in Uthai Thani, Sing Buri, Lop Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Chainat have been advised to brace for possible flooding, as a result of an increase in the amount of water being released through the Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat province.
Water runoff from northern provinces, following heavy rainfall there over the past several weeks, has increased the volume of water in the reservoir, forcing the irrigation office in Chainat to increase the discharge through the dam, from 100 cubic meters/second to 610 cubic meters/second, to ease the pressure on the dam. – Thai PBS

No alcohol sales this weekend
Thailand will celebrate the start of Buddhist Lent, a three-day religous holiday, this weekend – meaning no alcohol sales for the duration. Saturday is Asahna Bucha Day, Sunday is Khao Phansa Day, and Monday is a second Asahna Bucha Day.
Alcohol sales will be banned from Friday night at midnight until Monday night at midnight.
Asahna Bucha Day is the celebration in Thailand of the “Four Noble Truths” preached by Buddha in his first sermon after his enlightenment. These four noble truths are dukkha, tanha, nibbana, and the eight-fold path.
Khao Phansa Day is a Buddhist holiday observed in Thailand on the first day following the full moon occurring in the eighth month of the Thai lunar calendar. Khao Phansa marks the first day of “Buddhist Lent”, a time when observant Buddhists fast from such things as meat, alcohol, and tobacco. For the most part, only Theravada, rather than Mahayana, Buddhists observe Khao Phansa, and even many Theravada practitioners choose not to fast.

Electric rate increase under consideration
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced a public consultation from yesterday until July 26 to discuss the final electricity tariff adjustment of the year. The proposed adjustments could see electricity bills rise from September to December this year, with costs potentially increasing from 4.18 baht per unit to between 4.65 and 6.01 baht per unit.
The secretary-general and spokesperson of the ERC, Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, revealed that the fuel tariff (FT) might need to be adjusted upwards by 46.8 to 182.9 satang per unit, combined with the base electricity rate of 3.7 baht per unit. On Thursday, the officers received information that the gang leader of a call center gang, fleeing prosecution in Malaysia after raiding a fellow countryman’s place to collect money, was eventually arrested by Malaysian authorities. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to improve the service and facilities of its third-class trains by spending 780 million baht on new seats and air conditioning. For the first phase, 130 third-class carriages will be equipped with air conditioning by next year.

Rage over plan to raze Thai national park for farming
The ongoing public hearings organized by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) over a plan to declare 265,286 rai of land in Thap Lan National Park as no longer being protected forest land – paving the way for these parts of the park to be used for agricultural purposes – have sparked heated debate.

People in Koh Nang Yuan, a famous tourist island in southern Thailand, have maintained the habit of limiting the use of plastic items for many years, especially single-use products. Tourists are also required to do the same to retain the island’s natural environment and protect the coral reef.
Comprised of three islets connected by white sand, the island is a great diving spot to see coral reefs. More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.
The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. BYD’s first plant outside China starts EV manufacturing in Rayong
BYD’s first factory outside China officially started operations on Wednesday at the WHA Industrial Estate in Rayong, with the potential to create 10,000 jobs. The factory has a maximum production capacity of 150,000 cars per year, with a total investment of over 35 billion baht.
