Thousands attend Hua Hin Food Festival

The Hua Hin Food Festival 2025 drew thousands of visitors over the weekend, marking the town’s largest culinary event to date and coinciding with the 88th anniversary of Hua Hin Municipality.

PKK debuts emergency warning system to warn of impeding storms

Residents across Prachuap Khiri Khan, including Hua Hin, were alerted yesterday to a storm warning, as tropical storm Kajiki strengthened, bringing the risk of flash floods, runoff, and landslides. The warning marked the first use of the province’s new emergency alert system.

The Transport Ministry is expediting plans for the Nakhon Pathom–Cha-am motorway in a bid to ease congestion along Rama II Road and improve connectivity between Bangkok and the southern provinces.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said the detailed study for Motorway No. 8 (M8) has been completed and the proposal will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. Thailand’s petrol prices increase, diesel remains unchanged

Retail petrol prices across Thailand have gone up, with benzene and gasohol now 0.40 baht more per liter after the adjustment took effect yesterday.

According to PTT Station, benzene now retails at 40.84 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 is priced at 32.55 baht, gasohol 91 at 32.18 baht, E20 at 30.34 baht, E85 at 28.69 baht, and premium gasohol 95 at 41.14 baht. Diesel prices remain unchanged across all categories. Continued …

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Marine and coastal conservation project launched in Hua Hin

Ratchaburi Rajabhat University has launched a marine and coastal conservation project at the Blue Crab Bank in Khao Takiab to promote environmental awareness and sustainable tourism.

The project, opened yesterday by Associate Professor Napaporn Naktim, vice president of the Wang Klai Kangwon Campus of Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin, brought together faculty members and first-year students from the faculty of hotel and tourism industry. Continued …

Hua Hin elderly health project tackles dementia prevention

Hua Hin City Municipality has launched the “Bright Age, Away from Dementia” project, aimed at promoting health and improving the quality of life among elderly residents.

The initiative was officially opened on Tuesday at the Golden Sea Hotel in Hua Hin, with Sinat O-iam, deputy governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, presiding over the ceremony. Young elephant dies in PKK after attack by larger elephant

A young female elephant from the Pa La-U area was found dead in the Huai Sat Yai reservoir after being fatally injured in an attack by a larger elephant, officials confirmed yesterday.

The carcass was discovered in the “Sao Ha” reservoir area in Ban Khon Nom Pattana, Huai Sat Yai, outside the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park. A joint team of park officials, administrative officers, police, soldiers, veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, and members of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand inspected the site. New rules for SIM cards will require facial recognition

The government has announced stricter measures for SIM card registration to combat rising online fraud, following cases in which criminals have exploited SIM-swap scams to steal from victims.

The system will apply to all new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as existing users replacing SIM cards while keeping the same number. The technology verifies identity in real time through facial recognition, similar to banking applications. This prevents scammers from using photos, videos, or 3D masks to impersonate others, a loophole that previously enabled fraudulent SIM registration, he said. Continued …

Jay Fai Fined 2,000 Baht for Unclear Menu Pricing Dispute

The Ministry of Commerce has issued a 2,000 baht fine to Michelin-starred street food vendor Jay Fai following a pricing complaint by a Thai YouTuber.

The controversy began when Pitchaya “Peachii” Chaychana, a YouTuber residing in the UK, visited Jay Fai’s establishment in Bangkok and was astonished by the price of her crab omelette. Although the menu listed the dish at 1,500 baht, Peachii and her friends were charged 4,000 baht. The difference, they were told, was due to the substitution of premium crab meat. Continued …

Wild Elephants Kill Villager in Khon Kaen

A group of wild elephants entered agricultural land in Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen Province, and fatally attacked a local villager during the night.

Police from Si Chomphu District, together with volunteers from the Sattha Tham Si Chomphu Charity Assn., discovered the body floating face-down in a pond in Dong Lan subdistrict. Officials discover 20 preserved bodies at AIDS treatment temple

Officials from the Ministry of Public Health raided Phra Bat Nampu Temple in the central province of Lop Buri, where they discovered 20 bodies of AIDS patients illegally preserved and displayed in a museum within the temple.

Phra Bat Nampu Temple, also known as the AIDS temple, has long been running donation campaigns to raise funds for underprivileged AIDS patients. Many donors chose to support this temple, believing their contributions would directly benefit the patients. Continued …

A Thai security guard in Phuket ended up needing hospital treatment after being bitten by a highly venomous king cobra moments after capturing it with his bare hands.

Inflation statistics and household reality

Chinese goods expected to flood Thailand over next three years

Ath Pisalvanich, an independent scholar and specialist in international and ASEAN economics, explained that the Trump Tariff will make it more difficult for China to export to the US, forcing Chinese goods to be redirected to other markets such as ASEAN, the Middle East and Africa.

Tourism Minister proposes Bt700 million budget for free domestic flights

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong plans to request a Bt700-million budget from the Cabinet for a domestic flight giveaway initiative aimed at attracting at least 200,000 international tourists to various destinations across Thailand.

Sorawong said yesterday the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will submit a proposal to the Cabinet next week for the allocation of the budget to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Mother’s Day Weekend Travel Boosts Economy with 13.75 Billion Baht Revenue

Thailand experienced a tourism surge during Mother’s Day weekend, with 3.16 million trips contributing 13.75 billion baht. The average hotel occupancy rate reached 66%, with Thai nationals comprising 41% of travelers.

The central region led in trips (898,000), followed by the northeast (609,600) and east (600,500). Airports of Thailand revises Suvarnabhumi Airport plan, targets 120 million passengers

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) has revised the Suvarnabhumi Airport master plan, targeting a development project that can accommodate up to 120 million passengers per year, as it eyes the east expansion project tender next year.

Foreigner drowns, another critical at Phuket’s Kata Beach

A foreigner drowned in the sea off Kata Beach in Phuket yesterday, while another foreigner survived but was left in a critical condition. Witnesses said locals managed to pull both foreigners from the water, but one had already died.

    Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Most of us who come from “Western” countries, come from countries with varying immigration/visa policies/programmes (permanent migration (families, spouses, etc.) and temporary migration (student, tourist, work, etc.)). These policies/programmes change from time to time – they certainly have in Australia over the past 70-odd years of my life. One should expect changes in any country’s immigration/visa policies/programmes over time; Thailand is no different. The world is changing, and changing very quickly, and we must prepare and plan as best as possible for change. Thailand may require all citizens, foreign residents to file tax returns in 2027

Thailand is preparing to launch one of the most comprehensive tax overhauls in its modern history. Despite political instability, a border crisis with Cambodia, and fallout from the new US tariff regime, the Pheu Thai-led government is pressing ahead with reforms aimed at reshaping the country’s economic foundations.

At the center of the plan is a mandatory filing system requiring all adult citizens and businesses to submit annual tax returns by 2027. Foreign residents will also be included. Hua Hin Airport certification process moves closer to completion

Hua Hin Airport certification is moving forward, as the airport enters the final stages of Thailand’s nationwide program to standardize and improve aviation safety.

Following the recent certification of Phitsanulok and Krabi airports, the Department of Airports (DOA) confirmed that Hua Hin Airport is now in Phase 4 of the five-step certification process. This stage involves on-site operational inspections carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), and places Hua Hin on track to gain its public airport certification within the next year. Pranburi Beach restoration plans revealed

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has confirmed that the artificial headland project at Pranburi Beach will adopt nature-based solutions to address coastal erosion and restore ecosystems.

On Saturday, Pinsak Suraswadi, director-general of the DMCR, responded to concerns raised in parliament that the project overlapped with existing seawall initiatives and sought to avoid an environmental impact assessment (EIA). NESDC revises 2025 GDP growth to 2%, Q2 expands 2.8%

Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today released Thailand’s economic performance for the second quarter of 2025 and the updated outlook for the year.

He said the Thai economy expanded by 2.8% year-on-year in Q2, slowing from 3.2% growth in Q1. The main factor was a slowdown in non-agricultural production, particularly in tourism-related services, while agricultural production continued to grow. Continued …

The crackdown on tourists vainly trying to open Thai bank accounts has resulted in a surge of applications for the Destination Thailand Visa. That’s according to visa officers in Thai embassies, especially in nearby countries such as Laos and the Philippines.

Although no regular government figures are published, over 120,000 DTVs have been issued by about 70 Thai diplomatic posts abroad in the first year of operation. A key attraction of DTV is that applicants do not need a Thai bank account to show the liquid asset bond of 500,000 baht (US$ 16,000) since financial institutions abroad are acceptable depositaries. Thailand’s automotive market in 2025 continues to show only a slight decline compared with 2024, but the outlook is improving, with annual sales expected to reach around 600,000 units, up from 570,000 last year.

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. “It’s good news about the return of the Butterworth service. Further good news would be investment in rolling stock. With the huge outlay on the new track/Hua Hin station, it would’ve been good if some more money had gone into those ancient screeching trains (one is just going by now and the noise is deafening!), and carriages which have seen better days.” – AB

Editor: Patience. The Thai government has limited resources, with all areas of the country clamoring for investment of one kind or another. PKK is just one small piece of the overall equation, and, frankly, other areas could use the money more than this area. And new rolling stock has been purchased, just not for the southern route – yet. (Of course, as the article below illustrates, there always seems to be money for tourism needs.)

Hua Hin 2026 budget seeks over 400 million baht, with water system focus

Hua Hin has requested more than 400 million baht in funding for the 2026 fiscal year, with a significant portion aimed at upgrading the city’s water supply infrastructure.

The municipality is seeking a general grant of 349,345,000 baht to fund public services in education, social affairs, and administration. In addition, it has applied for a specific grant of 56,612,500 baht for infrastructure works aimed at strengthening the local water supply system. Continued …

      The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

      Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

One-eyed abused tiger, Rambo, escapes with his life after 20 years in cruel captivity

For almost 20 years, Rambo the tiger lived in a concrete cell in Thailand, sentenced to life imprisonment for tourists’ entertainment. The first thing he did upon being rescued was take a swim. 12 fishermen test positive in Hua Hin drug crackdown

Prachuap Khiri Khan officials have launched a targeted operation to identify drug users and dealers as part of the Interior Ministry’s “No Drugs No Dealers” policy, aimed at creating drug-free communities.

Yesterday, Deputy Governor Suthee Laosubinprasert and Mueang District Chief Supachai Krutdam oversaw inspections of three fishing vessels at Khlong Wan Pier. How 600-pound megafish became a collector’s item in Thailand

When a 200-pound Mekong giant catfish turned up at a flooded train station in the Thai city of Chiang Mai last year, it stopped people in their tracks. Seeing a six-to-seven-foot long fish trapped outside a ticket booth was a surreal sight — and it raised an obvious question: Where did it come from?

It certainly did not come from its natural habitat — the Mekong River, which runs through several Southeast Asian countries. The critically endangered species is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish and has become vanishingly rare in the wild in Thailand. Fearful residents flee border district

Fearing another round of clashes could break out along the Thai-Cambodian border at any moment, residents of a Sisaket district packed up and left their homes despite no evacuation order being issued, according to a media report.

Huay Mongkol Temple Mother’s Day draping draws crowd

Crowds gathered at Wat Huay Mongkol Saturday evening to take part in the 12th annual draping ceremony of the giant Luang Pu Thuat statue, held to mark Mother’s Day and honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 93rd birthday.

More than 1,000 Thai and foreign visitors joined the ceremony, carrying a saffron-yellow cloth measuring 3 meters wide and 247 meters long in a clockwise procession before draping it over the statue, which bears the royal cypher “Sor Kor.” Continued …

The State Railway of Thailand has resumed its normal south-bound train services after removing three derailed carriages and repairing damaged tracks in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Express Train Derails in Kui Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan

An express train traveling from Padang Besar to Bangkok Apiwat Station derailed this morning, leaving nine passengers injured, including a Buddhist monk and a young girl.

The incident occurred at around 5 amin Kui Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. According to local reports, the train, designated as Express No. 38, and three carriages left the tracks. Continued …

Chamber music series set for Hua Hin

Hua Hin Events and Elder Blossom Hua Hin will present “Serenade Hua Hin 2025”, a seven-concert chamber music series running from Aug. 23 to Sept. 13. The series, hosted at the Elder Blossom Theatre, aims to bring high-quality classical music to Hua Hin.

Former Boxer Sets Fire to Two Malaysian Tourists Outside Mall

A former boxer doused two Malaysian tourists with thinner and set them on fire outside a major shopping mall in central Bangkok late Thursday. The assailant was quickly restrained by bystanders at the scene.

Tourist Stabbed in Patong Over 60-Baht Fruit Dispute

A disagreement over the price of fruit has left a foreign tourist in hospital with a serious stab wound after an incident in Patong in the early hours yesterday. Officers arrived to find the victim, from Azerbaijan, lying on the pavement with a deep abdominal wound. He was rushed to Patong Hospital for emergency treatment.

The suspect was found waiting at the scene and reportedly admitted to stabbing the tourist during an argument. According to police, the dispute began after the tourist ate fruit from a sidecar stall run by the suspect and his girlfriend and allegedly refused to pay the 60-baht charge. Continued …

The elephant whisperer: one Thai woman’s lifelong quest to protect a rescued herd

Saengduean Lek Chailert was five years old when she saw an elephant for the first time. It was in chains, lumbering past her home in rural Thailand on its way to help loggers pull trees from the forest. Back then, she saw the giant mammals like everyone else – as animals that served humans. But that changed the day she heard a scream from the forest.

Chailert was 16 when she heard the terrible noise. She scrambled through the trees until she found the source: a bull elephant scrabbling in the mud as it tried and failed to drag a log out of a ditch. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.
