Soi 80 gunman out on bail, bar closed

The accused in a fatal shooting of a sergeant in a local pub has been given bail by a Hua Hin court. The head of the Hua Hin Police Station’s Police Affairs Monitoring Committee confirmed that the suspect has been suspended to ensure a fair investigation and comfort the victim’s family.

The accused is 34-year-old Jagkrit, an adviser to the Hua Hin Police Affairs Monitoring Committee in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. He is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Sgt. Major Rochnaporn, also known as Sergeant Punch, a soldier from the Thanarat Camp in Pranburi. Continued …

Thailand offers a multiplicity of long-term visas for women and men well past the first bloom of youth. They include annual extensions of stay, the 5-20 years Elite visa and the 10-year long-term residence (LTR), each of which has its own scale of charges with assorted pluses and minuses.

None of them allows direct ownership of land by foreigners, nor guarantees a path to permanent residency or citizenship. Purchase of condominiums is allowed but does not generally result in visa concessions. Tobacco health warnings ‘mandatory’, with Bt5,000 fine

A new control measure on cigarette and tobacco sales takes effect today, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced, saying that violations carry a maximum fine of 5,000 baht.

According to DDC Director-general Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, the measure requires retail vendors and establishments selling cigarettes and tobacco to display a 7x21cm poster showing the harm smoking causes at sale points during all operating hours. Continued …

Painter Falls to His Death from 49th Floor of Bangkok High-Rise

Yesterday, police from Phra Khanong Police Station received a report of a fatal fall at a building in Soi Sukhumvit 64/2, Phra Khanong District, Bangkok. The victim, a 30-year-old painter from Laos, had been working on the exterior of a 49-story building under renovation.

Witnesses reported the victim had been rappeling down from the 49th floor to paint the building when an accident occurred. It is suspected that the safety equipment and rope securing him had shifted, causing him to fall to his death. – aseannow.com

The Suphalak cat breed has been recognized as an international breed by the World Cat Federation (WCF), according to WCF Thailand.

At the WCF General Assembly 2024 in Germany, the Trade Association of Registered Cats (ARC) submitted a proposal to recognize the Suphalak breed, an ancient Thai cat breed that the ARC has long been proud of. Continued …

Thai Red Cross offers mpox vaccine for 8,500 baht per dose

The Thai Red Cross Society has initiated mpox (formerly monkeypox) vaccinations for the public, priced at 8,500 baht per dose, primarily targeting men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners.

The Thai Red Cross has imported the vaccine, which reportedly reduces the severity of the disease by 68 to 80%. Upon verifying with the Thai Red Cross Society, it was confirmed that there is currently no direct mpox vaccine. However, a two-dose subcutaneous vaccination, spaced at least 28 days apart, shows an efficacy rate of 80% to 85% in preventing mpox. Continued …

Tapir previously thought to be extinct emerges in Thai forest

An endangered tapir previously thought to be extinct was spotted in a forest in southern Thailand. Footage shows a rare Malayan tapir roaming in the undergrowth at the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province on Aug. 18.

The Malayan tapir is distributed throughout the tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra in Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Thai economy said ‘nearly in crisis’

Thailand’s economy is nearly in crisis due to declining exports and uncompetitive manufacturing, caretaker Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said today.

Exports accounts for 70% of the economy but the manufacturing sector cannot meet market demand, Pichai told a business seminar. “We can’t compete. We can’t adapt in time,” he said. Continued …

Thai economy has bottomed out; economists expect stabilization in 2025

Economists have come out to say that Thailand’s economy may have bottomed out and the outlook is a little more optimistic for the year ahead after the country’s economic growth was slightly better than expected, as announced by the National Economic & Social Development Council (NESDC).

The NESDC announced the Q2 2024 gross domestic product (GDP) for 2024 at 2.3%, bringing the 6-months to June 2024 GDP growth to 1.9%, and expectation that for 2024 the GDP growth could be around 2.5%. Continued …

No problems with cash distribution via digital wallet scheme

The Budget Bureau would have no objection if the government were to change the disbursement of the 10,000-baht financial benefit under the “digital wallet” scheme from “digital money” to cash, as long as the objective of the scheme is to stimulate the economy and the disbursement begins in September, Chalermphol Pensoot, the bureau’s director, said today.

He noted, however, that the government has not yet decided in what form the benefit will be. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has hinted that the digital wallet scheme will have to be reviewed, in line with changes in the economic situation. – thaipbs

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya River is born from mountain streams in northern Thailand, flowing hundreds of kilometers south to the sea. By the time the river travels through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand, it is carrying huge quantities of plastic waste – an estimated 4,000 tons every year. The plastic clogs the river along its course, drastically impacting communities and the waterway’s ecology.

The Chao Phraya starts at the confluence of the Ping and Nan rivers, which meet in Nakhon Sawan province in the heart of Thailand. Although the river’s waters have already traveled half of the country’s length by this point, it is still relatively clean, flanked by villages and farms. Continued …

Thai energy giant PTT has a new strategic plan focused on improving industrial dicarbonization, merging its electric vehicle (EV) business brands, and attracting partners to invest in its petroleum operations, group CEO and President Kongkrapan Intarajang announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

The strategies follow on from the group’s strong first-half performance, which resulted in a net profit of 64.437 billion baht, up 34.4% year on year. Laboratory tests of 191 Mpox patients in Thailand have found that the viruses are of Clade 2 strain, presenting in eight subvariants, with C.1 subvariant found in most cases in the Kingdom, the Department of Medical Sciences said on Monday.

Thailand’s dominant subvariant C.1 of Clade 2 strain is different than the one currently spreading in Africa, which is the original strain from Clade 1 and has now evolved into Clade 1b, he said, adding that the Clade 1b strain is more easily transmissible and can infect anyone in close proximity to a patient in just four hours. The Pheu Thai Party has announced that it will nominate Paetongtarn Shinawatra as its candidate for prime minister to succeed Srettha Thavisin, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday.

With PM’s Dismissal, Thailand’s ‘Network Monarchy’ Strikes Back

With another controversial ruling, Thailand’s Constitutional Court has once again returned the country to a new era of political stasis and uncertainty. On Wednesday, the court voted 5-4 to dismiss Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office for a minor “ethical violation,” relating to the appointment to his cabinet of an official who had previously served a prison sentence for bribing a court official.

The Constitutional Court’s decision is just the latest in a long line of significant interventions in Thai politics, and came a week after another ruling that disbanded the Move Forward Party, the largest party in the Thai parliament, and banned 11 of its executives from politics for 10 years. 10 Northeast provinces at risk of severe drought in next 10 years

Ten provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are likely to experience severe drought over the next decade, according to drought trends forecast by the Climate Change and Environmental Department on Wednesday. The forecast was based on two climate model scenarios: one assuming moderate greenhouse gas emissions and one with high emissions.

The moderate emissions scenario assumes greenhouse gas emissions in 2100 will be close to current levels, potentially raising the global average surface temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius between 2081 and 2100. The high emissions scenario assumes emissions will be double the current levels, potentially increasing the global average surface temperature by about 4.4°C. Continued …

Thai-Chinese high-speed railway 36% behind schedule

The first phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway running from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima province is currently 71.4% complete, but around 36.4% behind its scheduled opening in 2028, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported on Thursday.

A woman experienced a terrifying ordeal when the lift she was using at her condo in Bangkok suddenly plummeted from the 32nd floor and stopped at the 15th floor, leaving her shaken.

Through extensive campaigns on sexual well-being at the community level over the past decade, Thailand has successfully brought down the number of teenage mothers (aged 15-19) by half, the Public Health Ministry has announced, as it embarks on a more ambitious goal.

Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Wednesday that births in women aged 15-19 years in 2023 was 21 cases per 1,000 female population in this age group, down from 53.4 cases per 1,000 female population recorded in 2012. Continued …

Thaksin Tells Pheu Thai to Abandon Digital Wallet Plan

Thai unemployment drops, except in Bangkok

Thailand’s overall unemployment rate dropped from May to June, except in Bangkok, according to a new survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Institute predicts 8.8% jump in food exports to Bt1.6 trillion

The value of Thailand’s food exports is expected to increase by 8.8% year-on-year to 1.6 trillion baht this year, driven by growing global demand and a decrease in the prices of raw materials, says the National Food Institute (NFI).

Team Mitsubishi To Compete in Asia Cross Country Rally in Hua Hin

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. Expats angry at huge concessions in latest Thai visa announcements

Longstay expats with expensive visas say the new 60-days visa-exempt policy and the 180-days Destination Thailand Visa have made the Elite visa and the annual extensions of stay for retirement and marriage worthless. Geoffrey Fisher, a Brit who recently paid 900,000 baht (about 20,000 UK pounds) for the five-year Elite visa said he had wasted his money, as more or less anyone can now stay in Thailand almost indefinitely for a paltry sum.

The disenchanted argue that the 60-days visa-exempt can evidently be extended at local immigration for 30 days more, followed by a border run to start the whole process again. Some immigration officers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport have allegedly told new arrivals they can now do as many border runs as they like. Continued … 

Reminder: No alcohol sales this weekend

Thailand celebrates the start of Buddhist Lent, a three-day religous holiday, this weekend – meaning no alcohol sales for the duration. Today is Asahna Bucha Day, Sunday is Khao Phansa Day, and Monday is a second Asahna Bucha Day.

Alcohol sales are banned from Friday night at midnight until Monday night at midnight.

Asahna Bucha Day is the celebration in Thailand of the “Four Noble Truths” preached by Buddha in his first sermon after his enlightenment. These four noble truths are dukkha, tanha, nibbana, and the eight-fold path.

Khao Phansa Day is a Buddhist holiday observed in Thailand on the first day following the full moon occurring in the eighth month of the Thai lunar calendar. Khao Phansa marks the first day of “Buddhist Lent”, a time when observant Buddhists fast from such things as meat, alcohol, and tobacco. For the most part, only Theravada, rather than Mahayana, Buddhists observe Khao Phansa, and even many Theravada practitioners choose not to fast.

Hua Hin 94 Road Improvement Project Begins Monday

This week, Hua Hin municipal officials and staff, and representatives from Chok Kijcharoen Ltd., the contractor responsible for the project, inspected the site for the upcoming renovation of Hua Hin 94 Road. Anutin raises the stakes, expresses opposition to the PM’s policy outlawing cannabis

The question of cannabis is fast becoming a political headache for Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This week he was confronted by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who voiced his opposition to the process presently underway to re-criminalize possession and use of the drug for recreational purposes.

At a meeting between the key coalition partner and Srettha, Anutin confirmed he would vote against the criminalization of cannabis at a forthcoming meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) to be chaired by the PM. Afterward, the deputy prime minister also noted ominously that this was currently a ministerial matter that had not reached Cabinet level yet. Continued …

Put weed plan on hold

The government, especially Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, needs to immediately put on hold the plan to put cannabis back on the narcotics list, and engage in dialogue on the issue with all stakeholders.

The decision to fast-track the re-criminalization of the herb is just arrogant, authoritative and wilfully ignorant of the importance of public participation in such policy shifts. Continued …

Economists worry despite IMF’s positive forecast for Thai economy

Though the Finance Ministry is optimistic about Thailand’s economic prospects after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) upgraded the country’s GDP growth to 2.9% from 2.7%, many economists remain worried.

Despite the modest increase, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira described the revised forecast as encouraging. “Although the difference of 0.2 or 0.3% is low, it is still good amid an ongoing downturn,” he said. Continued …

CIMB Thai Group recorded a consolidated net profit of THB 1.2946 billion, a year-on-year (“YoY”) decrease of THB 74.3 million, or 5.4%, while profit before tax (“PBT”) decreased by THB 117.2 million, or 6.8%, YoY to THB 1.611billion.

Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya PCL and its business units) posted a net profit of 15.75 billion baht for H1 2024, a 7.9% YoY decline due to increased prudential provisions. Operating profit growth was driven by revenue from 2023 ASEAN acquisitions and higher domestic income.

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has firmly denied allegations from a United Nations report claiming that Thai-owned banks were involved in arms sales transactions with Myanmar’s government forces.

During a House of Representatives session, Maris rebuffed claims from Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, who asserted that nearly $130 million in weapon sales had been funneled through unnamed Thai banks to Myanmar’s military, the Tatmadaw. NBTC votes not to purchase broadcasting rights for Olympics

A meeting of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Wednesday voted unanimously 7:0 not to spend 435 million baht to sponsor the purchase of broadcasting rights for the 2024 Olympic Games and 2024 Paralympic Games.

The motion proposed that the NBTC use resources from its Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund for Public Interest to sponsor the purchase of broadcasting rights for the two sporting events, which will be held in Paris, France from July 26 to Aug. 11, and Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, respectively. No alcohol sales this weekend

Thailand will celebrate the start of Buddhist Lent, a three-day religous holiday, this weekend – meaning no alcohol sales for the duration. Saturday is Asahna Bucha Day, Sunday is Khao Phansa Day, and Monday is a second Asahna Bucha Day.

Alcohol sales will be banned from Friday night at midnight until Monday night at midnight.

Asahna Bucha Day is the celebration in Thailand of the “Four Noble Truths” preached by Buddha in his first sermon after his enlightenment. These four noble truths are dukkha, tanha, nibbana, and the eight-fold path.

Khao Phansa Day is a Buddhist holiday observed in Thailand on the first day following the full moon occurring in the eighth month of the Thai lunar calendar. Khao Phansa marks the first day of “Buddhist Lent”, a time when observant Buddhists fast from such things as meat, alcohol, and tobacco. For the most part, only Theravada, rather than Mahayana, Buddhists observe Khao Phansa, and even many Theravada practitioners choose not to fast.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for 51 provinces, forecasting heavy rainfall and advising caution against flash floods and forest runoffs.

Southern Region (East Coast): Sixty percent of the area will have thunderstorms, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon. Temperatures will be between 23 and 25°C minimum and 30 and 34°C maximum. It will take three years to bring the population of invasive blackchin tilapia under control, using genetic modification that will produce infertile offspring, according to the Department of Fisheries.

Public ‘misled’ on park land

A House committee on Wednesday urged the government to clarify why it is allegedly misinforming the public regarding land disputes involving about 265,286 rai of land in Thap Lan National Park.

Thailand suspends 2.14 million unregistered mobile phone numbers

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has temporarily suspended 2.14 million mobile phone numbers whose owners did not meet the identity registration deadline. This action aims to enhance security and prevent fraud associated with unregistered mobile numbers.

Individuals holding between six and 100 unregistered SIM cards are affected, and failure to register within the next 30 to 45 days will result in permanent revocation of the numbers. Torrential rain affecting Maha Sarakham province since Sunday has caused the Huay Chiang Kham Reservoir to overflow, releasing massive amounts of water into rice plantations in four subdistricts located below the reservoir in Borabue district.
