Despite some criticisms and imperfections, many foreigners living in or visiting Thailand still believe the country offers a safer and more welcoming environment than many places around the world. Long-term visitors often point out that while Thailand has its challenges, it compares favorably when considering global standards.

“Still feel safer than many European or other cities over the world. Chunks of concrete fell from an overhead beam onto a pickup truck, severely injuring the driver, beneath the expressway being built above Rama 2 Road, this morning.

Free wi-fi soon for passengers on long-haul trains

The State Railway of Thailand plans to provide a free wi-fi service on long-haul trains to the north, northeast and south, starting late this year.

SRT Gov. Veeris Ammarapala said the decision to provide a free wi-fi service followed passengers’ complaints they lost their internet connection when trains were passing through forests and mountainous terrain, meaning they could not check the news or real-time location of their train. Continued …

Severe Diarrhea Outbreak in Lampang Affects Over 3,000

Lampang province is experiencing a severe outbreak of diarrhea, with over 3,000 cases reported. The outbreak is widespread, with no apparent link to consumption of specific foods, and is believed to be triggered by the unusually hot weather making food spoil more easily.

Volunteer Officer Ambushed and Killed Near Base in Yala

A volunteer security officer in Bannang Sata district, Yala province, was ambushed and killed late on 27 AprilSunday while on a brief trip to a local shop, just 300 meters from his operational base. The attackers later set fire to both the officer’s car and his body.

The victim had driven from his base at Taling Chan subdistrict to purchase supplies at a grocery shop. As he exited his vehicle, gunmen hiding in nearby overgrowth opened fire with automatic weapons. Thailand awaits US nod for tariff talks date

Thailand is waiting for the United States to give a reply on when it will hold talks on trade tariffs, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The government is arranging an appointment with Washington, and it is still not clear whether the talks will take place late this month or early next month, she said.

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

A Thai-Chinese company yesterday denied allegations its steel rods did not pass safety standard tests after nationwide criticism prompted an investigation into the collapse of a high-rise building under construction after an earthquake last month in Bangkok.

Songkran road accidents claim 253 lives, down 12%

The “seven dangerous days” of traveling on the road for this year’s Songkran holidays ended on Thursday, with the accumulated death toll reaching 253, a 12% decline from the same period last year.

The Road Safety Operation Center reported yesterday there were 147 traffic accidents, 145 injuries and 22 deaths on the last day of the period. This led to a total of 1,538 accidents and 1,495 injuries recorded between April 11 and April 17. Continued …

Bangkok set for major law shake-up after 40 years

Police Rescue Kidnapped Indian Nationals in Bangkok

In a successful operation in Bangkok, police rescued four Indian nationals who were kidnapped by fellow countrymen in a ransom scheme. The rescue mission unfolded after Sanjeeve Kumar, an Indian resident in Bangkok, approached Yannawa Police Station on April 16 to report the abduction of his friends, Ramesh Sharmar and Amandeep Kajal.

Kumar recounted that upon arriving in Bangkok on April 5, he, Sharmar, and Kajal initially stayed at a hotel in Sathon before moving to Silom. During their stay, they met an Indian national who offered an invitation to Vietnam. Due to visa delays, Kumar could not accompany them and allowed his friends to proceed alone on April 14. In May 2024, authorities uncovered a major wildlife smuggling operation in Dan Singkhorn, southern Thailand, near the Myanmar border.

An old codger or “senior golfer” typically hits a driver around 200-220 yards. However, these distances can vary based on individual fitness levels, swing technique, and equipment. On average, you can only expect around 180 yards with a 5-wood, 155 with a 5-hybrid, 140 with a 6-iron, 130 with a 7-iron, 120 with an 8-iron, 110 with a 9-iron, 100 with a pitching wedge, and about 70 yards with a 54-degree wedge. More tropical storms are forecast during the coming Songkran festival, particularly in upper Thailand, where strong winds, thunderstorms, and hail are expected between April 12-14, according to the Meteorological Department.

Thailand Slashes Property Transfer Fees

The Cabinet yesterday approved a proposal by the Ministry of Finance to reduce ownership transfer and mortgage fees for houses and condominium units to 0.01%. The measure will remain in effect until mid-2026.

A survey has revealed that while expatriates are generally satisfied with their quality of life in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, several areas need improvement, including high medical insurance costs, road safety, and environmental issues.

The research collected data from over 500 foreign retirees and semi-retirees living in Hua Hin, aged 55 and above, who stay in Hua Hin at least six months per year. The sample included foreigners from 76 countries, primarily from Western Europe and North America. Transport authorities are recommending detours to motorists, as the collapse of a new expressway on Saturday seriously damaged an existing Bangkok-Thon Buri expressway ramp which connects to Rama II Road, a main southbound highway, and its complete reopening will take about a month.

Surachet Laophulsuk, governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), said near the collapse site yesterday that police expected very heavy traffic congestion in the area today, as the collapse blocked both inbound and outbound traffic on the Chalerm Maha Nakhon expressway ramp near the Dao Khanong toll plaza.
