A Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) survey has revealed five health risks from tabletop barbecue buffet dining.

Transport Ministry outlines its projects for 2024

The Ministry of Transport has allocated 389.75 billion baht to fund transportation projects as part of the government’s plan to create a seamless transportation system in Thailand.

Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit revealed on Tuesday that the transportation projects for this year include 64 projects set to become operational and 31 new projects on which construction is slated to commence. Beijing says construction of China-Thailand rail must be sped up

China and Thailand need to speed up the construction of a delayed, high-speed railway to link their countries, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Monday at the end of a three-day visit to Bangkok.

“The two sides should jointly advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, speed up the construction of the China-Thailand railway, and open the central line of the Trans-Asian Railway,” Wang said to Srettha at their meeting, the statement said. Continued …

December factory output drops 6.27% y/y

Thailand’s manufacturing production index in December fell 6.27% from a year earlier, as car production output declined, the Industry Ministry said today.

Thailand’s trade deficit with China reaches record high

For the fifth consecutive year, Thailand recorded a trade deficit with China in 2023, the highest yet at US$36 billion, up from $29 billion in 2022.

The deficit is the result of Thailand importing more goods from China than it exports. In 2023, Thailand’s imports from China totaled $105 billion, while its exports were just $69 billion. Continued … 

Thai workers overseas contribute 60 billion baht in Q1

Over 21,000 Thai workers were dispatched overseas in the first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, generating nearly 60 billion baht (US$1.69 billion) in remittances, as disclosed by a leading labor representative.

The period of October to December saw 21,281 Thais heading overseas for work, half of whom, numbering 10,024, were recruited by the private sector, according to Pairoj Chotikasathien, the permanent secretary for labor. Continued …

There has been a significant rise in online searches for Thailand in China since both countries signed a reciprocal visa waiver agreement. Google Trends is reporting a 7-fold increase in searches for “Thailand tourism” in China.

TAT calls for extended tourist visas

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is asking the government to extend the visa-free stay duration for long-haul tourists, including those from the United States and Europe, to 90 days, aiming to lift long-haul revenue to 40% of the country’s total in 2024.

The air quality in Bangkok and its vicinity was at a critical level when measured at 6am today. The average PM2.5 level in Bangkok is 86 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), which is in the red zone, meaning it has a significant impact on health.

The main causes of PM2.5 are the burning of fossil fuels from vehicles, industrial plants, and agricultural activities. 10 days of rainfall predicted in Thailand, with lower temperatures

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) predicted rainfall for the next 10 days, from Jan. 22-31. The TMD anticipates thunderstorms in the northern, central and upper northeastern regions, with a temperature rise expected.

From Jan. 22-26, a moderate to strong mass of cold air will spread over the northeast and the South China Sea, which will result in a southerly wind and a southeasterly wind bringing moisture from the Gulf of Thailand. This will cover the lower central region, the eastern region, Bangkok and its vicinity, and the upper southern region. The weather forecast for the next seven days, from Jan. 23-27, suggests that Thailand will experience thunderstorms and a temperature decrease of 1-4 degrees Celsius. Continued …

COVID-19 hospital admissions increase 12.9% during the past week

COVID-19 infections in Thailand are on the rise, with 718 patients being admitted to hospitals between Jan. 14-20. Of these, 11 have died, compared to four a week earlier, according to the Department of Disease Control.

An average of 102 admissions were reported each day during the past week, an increase of 12.9%. Of the 718 admissions, 209 were suffering from serious lung infections and 149 required ventilators. Continued …

Thailand ranks 13th among world food exporters, accounting for 2.3% of the global food market, valued at approximately 1.1 billion baht. However, according to the GermanWatch Global Climate Risk Index 2021, Thailand ranks ninth out of 180 countries for long-term climate risk.

New tax era in Thailand begins

Thailand is moving toward greater integration with the international tax framework to stamp out tax avoidance and evasion. Significantly, it comes with the Revenue Department reporting a surge in income in the first few months of the fiscal year, which will also see foreign residents more closely scrutinized for tax.

The Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation disclosed the rankings of the top 10 highest-earning and most-visited national parks from the pool of 133 parks for the previous year.

Based on revenue from January to December 2023, the top 10 Thai national parks accumulated a total income of 1,651,868,101 baht (US$47 million). Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi topped the chart with an income of 377,321,864 baht (US$10 million). A passenger van with a Bangkok license plate collided with a rice-harvesting truck with a Phetchaburi license plate yesterday morning on Petchaburi Road (southbound) in Phetchaburi Province, seriously injuring two foreign tourists.

WFFT rescues 15 big cats from northern Thailand facility

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on Dec. 16 following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. The National Statistical Office of Thailand (NSO) is urging the government to further promote basic rights, social security and labor protection for workers in the informal sector, citing 2023 statistics that show that more than half of Thailand’s workforce (52.3%), or some 21 million people, are informal workers.

Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports announced that the number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand has reached 25.7 million since Jan. 1, 2023, generating revenue of 1,098,082 million baht, or 31.320 billion U.S. dollars. On the first day of 2024, a recently tweaked regulation on foreign income remitted to Thailand by Thai citizens and foreign residents will come into effect – much to the consternation of expatriate retirees and investors in foreign assets.

The new “instruction” – announced by the Revenue Department on Sept. 15 – is a revised interpretation of a longstanding tax regulation that now states that any income from a foreign source derived by a Thai individual tax resident is subject to personal income tax when brought into Thailand. Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) today announced a strong surge in today’s gold prices. Compared to yesterday’s closing price, gold ornaments are selling at 34,800 baht per baht, up by 200 baht.

Gold bars of 96.5% purity are currently being bought at 34,200 baht per baht and sold at 34,300 baht per baht, according to the first announcement.
