Baht falls to three-month low as US inflation delays expected rate cut

The baht hit a three-month low against the U.S. dollar yesterday, slipping below 36 to the dollar. This was attributed to higher than anticipated U.S. inflation, which led the market to predict a delay in the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut, initially expected in May.

Quoting Kasikorn Research Center, the baht was valued at a low of 36.13 against the dollar before rising slightly to 36.07 to 36.09 baht. This is compared to Tuesday’s closing rate of 35.7 baht. Continued …

Meteorological department predicts higher temperatures this summer

Mae Hong Son, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak and Udon Thani provinces will likely experience temperatures higher than 44 degrees Celsius during the upcoming summer, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

The department said this year’s summer will start in the last week of February and end by the end of May. Overall temperature throughout Thailand during the hot season will be higher than last year by 1-2 degrees Celsius, while the amount of rainfall will be lower than normal, it added. Continued …

Bangkok urges work from home amid rise in PM2.5

Levels of fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) soared in most Bangkok districts on Wednesday, prompting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to call on state agencies and private organizations to allow their staff to work from home Thursday and Friday.

In an announcement signed by Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt, the BMA encouraged 151 public and private organizations with 60,279 staff to work from home over those days. Continued …

Thai woman seeks foreign couple who rescued her mother from Chao Phraya River

A Thai woman took to social media to look for a foreign couple who saved her mother from drowning in the Chao Phraya River in the central province of Ayutthaya.

Recalling the event, Kornwipha Thongnoom explained that her 70-year-old mother went to a hospital for some follow-up treatment and waited for the boat at Chao Phrom Market Pier to return home. ‘The Cave’ Diver Helps Recover body of British kayaker in Surat Reservoir

Yesterday, officials found the body of a British tourist who fell out of a kayak near Ratchaprapha Dam, Surat Thani Province, after spending more than three days, with the help of a diving teacher who had previously participated in the Tham Luang cave rescue operation.

Slow economic growth, lack of foreign investment are major challenges

Thailand’s biggest economic challenge is that its economy has been growing at a slower pace, about 3% per annum, than Malaysia and China, at about 5% annually, because it lacks the ability to attract foreign investors, according to Kobsak Pootrakool, executive vice president of the Bangkok Bank and a respected economist.

Consumer confidence up for sixth month in a row

Consumer confidence rose for a sixth consecutive month in January, reaching the highest level in 47 months since March 2020, propped up by the government’s stimulus measures to propel spending and reduce electricity and fuel prices.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) reported on Tuesday the consumer confidence index rose to 62.9 in January, up from 62.0 in December, 60.9 in November, 60.2 in October, 58.7 in September, 56.9 in August and 55.6 in July. Continued …

AOT sees soaring profits as global aviation industry thrives

Airports of Thailand (AOT) on Monday reported a profit of 4.56 billion baht in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 (October-December 2023), a jump of 1,231% compared to the same period last year, which saw 342.77 million baht of profit.

The airport authority said it had enjoyed significantly increased revenue from both its aviation and non-aviation businesses. According to Chenwit Musikarat, AOT’s executive vice president for accounting and finance, AOT’s total revenue from sales and services increased 78% year on year to 6.88 billion baht. Continued …

Chinese New Year Brings 13.3% More Tourists to Thailand

Sudawan Wangsuphakitkoson, minister of tourism and sports, revealed on Tuesday that Thailand has attracted a large number of tourists in the past week during the Chinese New Year festival (Feb. 5-11), particularly from East Asia and Southeast Asia, such as China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea, in comparison to the previous week.

A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. The accident occurred near Koh Lao Lading island, around 300 meters from Koh Hong, with the two islands being part of Krabi’s Than Bok Khorani National Park.

Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. 5,000 Chinese tourists a day on Phuket over Chinese New Year

Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 2pm at a condo in central Pattaya whose name has been withheld pending further investigation.

Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.

8-year-old becomes the youngest to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand

Water sports history was written yesterday when eight-year-old Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen became the youngest to windsurf 107 kilometers (66 miles) across the Gulf of Thailand – a claim to fame he most wanted as a gift for his ninth birthday this coming Sunday. It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Unsafe levels of smog cover upper Thailand

 

Forty-eight from all 77 provinces, especially those in the northeast, experienced hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported at 10am that 13 provinces were blanketed by red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.8 to 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Doctors from Hua Hin Hospital and the Thai Red Cross Society have posthumously honored a 13-year-old patient for donating organs following his tragic death.

Patcharaphon Srilert, 13, from Hua Hin recently passed away from a brain aneurysm, with his family choosing to donate his organs to assist numerous patients awaiting treatment. Lifting of afternoon alcohol sales ban being considered

The Thai government is considering lifting the afternoon prohibition on alcohol sales in a bid to boost its tourism industry. Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew is planning to ask the government’s alcohol control committee to discuss the appeal by the Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Assn. (TABBA) to revoke the rule that restricts alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm.

A sudden drop in temperature by up to 6 degrees Celsius and strong winds have been forecast across multiple regions in Thailand, with Bangkok experiencing a 4 degree Celsius decrease.

The northeastern part of Thailand is bracing for cold to very cold weather conditions, accompanied by gusty winds, leading to temperature reductions of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius. Thai boy, 8, to cross Gulf of Thailand on a kite foil from Pattaya to Hua Hin

Thanawat “Shane” Promwen, 8 years old, started his adventure across the Gulf of Thailand this morning, embarking on a journey of 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Pattaya to Pak Nam Pran, in the Hua Hin area, setting the record for being the youngest child ever to achieve this goal. by crossing with kite foil.

Shane has been making waves in the kite and wing foilling world since the age of 3, and his latest adventure marks a big step forward. In preparation for international competition in 2024. At present, he is too young to compete and has to rely on special invitations to participate in adult competitions.

Air quality in Bangkok and surrounding areas was still poor on Tuesday, with levels of PM2.5 pollution exceeding the safety threshold in 68 districts in and around the capital. Unsafe dust levels in 51 provinces

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said five central plains provinces were blanketed by red (seriously hazardous) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Public advised to use N95 mask as PM2.5 in Bangkok at unsafe levels

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

PM to submit dust control plan to court

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that he will submit a plan to solve the PM2.5 fine dust problem as ordered by the Chiang Mai Administrative Court within 90 days.

New tiger discovery in Chumphon province

Wild gaurs in rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima

Tourism business operators from Wang Nam Khieo district in Nakhon Ratchasima have put forward initiatives to tackle the escalating number of incidents involving wild gaurs. These large, wild bulls are causing havoc, attacking individuals, and wreaking destruction on crops.
