Thai PM suspended

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from her duties pending a ruling on whether she breached ethical standards in violation of the constitution, following a controversial phone call with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen.

The petition, filed by 36 senators, accuses the 38-year-old premier of dishonesty over the leaked call, which appeared to show her currying favor with Hun Sen while disparaging a Thai military commander. Continued …

Suriya to become acting PM

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit will become the acting prime minister and will lead the new Cabinet at the oath-taking ceremony before His Majesty the King tomorrow.

An informed government source pointed out that Phumtham Wechayachai should have been the first in line to stand in for Paetongtarn as the acting prime minister during her suspension, had it not been for a legal technicality in the new Cabinet line-up rules, which means that Phumtham’s posts as deputy prime minister and defense minister have ended and he is yet to be formally reinstated as deputy prime minister and interior minister. Revision of alcohol sales ban from 2-5 pm under review

The Ministry of Public Health expects scrutiny of a new bill containing a series of amendments to the Alcohol Control Act 2008 to be completed later this month, says Minister Somsak Thepsutin. The legislation will get rid of outdated military-era sales restrictions and ease curbs on advertising, but will also introduce some stricter regulations.

The law will also formally repeal National Peace Keeping Council Order No 253, dating back to 1972, which sets the legal hours for alcohol sales, currently 11am to 2pm and 5pm to midnight. Continued …

Foreigners dreaming of winning the Thai lottery rejoice. You can legally purchase lottery tickets in Thailand, provided they’re bought from licensed vendors. With draws held on the first and 16th of each month, except during certain holidays, your chance to strike it rich is never too far away.

Bt400 minimum wage in hotel and entertainment businesses from today

The new 400-baht minimum wage came into effect today in Bangkok, Phuket, Chon Buri, Chachoengsao, and Rayong provinces, and in the Koh Samui district of Surat Thani province.

The new minimum wage applies to employees of 2-star to 5-star hotels with at least 50 rooms, as well as those who work in entertainment venues, such as bars, pubs, nightclubs, and karaoke bars. Continued …

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has issued an apology after the registration system for the “Tiew Thai Khon La Krueng” (Half-Half Thai Travel) co-payment scheme suffered a technical failure, rendering it inaccessible yesterday — the launch day for registration of 500,000 travel entitlements.

TAT stated it is urgently working to restore the system as quickly as possible to allow Thai citizens to register and claim their entitlements aimed at boosting domestic tourism. Spanish Tourists Rescued After Longtail Boat Capsizes Off Koh Samui

A longtail passenger boat carrying four Spanish tourists capsized late yesterday mornin, between Koh Samui and Koh Taen due to strong winds and rough waves, authorities have confirmed.

The world will have to learn to live with heatwaves, the United Nations’ weather and climate agency said yesterday, as much of Europe roasted in high summer temperatures. The World Meteorological Organization said that in the future, people could expect heatwaves to occur more often and be more intense because of human-induced climate change.

WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis said July was traditionally the hottest month of the year in the northern hemisphere, but it was exceptional, though not unprecedented, to have episodes of extreme heat this early in the summer. Continued …

Wat Khun Samut Chin: Graphic indicator of Bangkok being reclaimed by the sea

A popular temple in Samut Prakan, surrounded by the sea, serves as a graphic indicator that Bangkok could be reclaimed by the sea by 2050, an academic warned on Monday. Sonthi Kotchawat, an environmental expert, said Wat Khun Samut Chin in Samut Prakan was clear evidence that both Bangkok and Samut Prakan were facing a serious issue of coastal erosion due to global warming.

He noted that the temple used to have 76 rai of land around it, but now most of the land had been reclaimed by the sea, leaving only five rai of dry land for the temple grounds. Continued …

Bangkok Airways takes off with green fuel to slash carbon emissions

Bangkok Airways is propelling its Low Carbon Skies by Bangkok Airways initiative with a major commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Starting yesterday, the airline will officially introduce  sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on its commercial flights, marking a significant step toward a more environmentally friendly future for aviation in Thailand.

The airline will blend SAF with 99% Jet A-1 fuel, starting with a 1% SAF mix, which is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 128 kilograms per flight. This sustainable move is part of the airline’s broader mission to lead the charge in Thailand’s green aviation industry. Continued …

Phuket boosts security with 98-million-baht ‘Phuket Eye’ expansion

Phuket is about to get a major security upgrade as local officials unveil plans to expand the “Phuket Eye” initiative, a groundbreaking security model aimed at making the island safer, with crime suppression, tourist safety, and traffic management as top priorities.

        The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Road work on Soi 94 still in turmoil

Hua Hin City has held an urgent meeting in a bid to speed up the delayed construction of Soi 94, a key road project that has caused months of disruption for local residents and businesses.

The meeting was called to address ongoing delays in the project, which involves resurfacing a 500-meter stretch of Soi 94 with reinforced concrete and installing an upgraded drainage system. The project, which began on July 22, 2024, was initially due for completion in February 2025 but was halted after underground utility issues and soil subsidence required a full revision of the construction plans. The 27th Red Cross Fair and Hua Hin’s Best Products officially opened Friday evening at the event space behind Bluport Hua Hin on Soi 102. Foreign investment in Thailand surges 34% as EEC draws over 47 billion baht

Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the Department of Business Development , reported that foreign investment in Thailand saw a significant increase during the first five months of 2025 (January–May), with 426 foreign entities approved to operate businesses under the Foreign Business Act 1999.

Three years since Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis, the government this week imposed new rules designed to rein in the country’s “green rush.” As of last Thursday, customers need a doctor’s prescription to buy cannabis — effectively restricting consumption of the plant to medical and health purposes only.

Gulf hits renewable target 5 years early

Gulf Development, Thailand’s largest energy company by market value and a telecom operator, has achieved its target to increase its renewable power proportion to 40% of total electricity generation capacity following a recent investment in solar farms. The company reached the goal ahead of the target year of 2030.

Prayad Marksaeng crowned Toyota Senior Championship winner in Hua Hin

Local golf pro Prayad Marksaeng clinched the championship title at the Toyota Senior Championship/Zenn Cup 2025, the third stop on the 2025 Thai Senior Tour. Prayad, 59, finished with a 14-under-par total of 202, earning him the winner’s cheque of 120,000 Thai baht.

Alcohol sales easing awaits ministry nod

The committee on alcohol beverage control has acknowledged that the easing of alcohol bans on Buddhist holy days has yet to be extended to ordinary retail shops, pending clarification from the Ministry of Interior.

Weekend sees more heavy rain across Thailand in seasonal deluge

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for 57 provinces to prepare for heavy rainfall over the weekend. The northeastern and northern regions, as well as Bangkok and surrounding areas, are expected to experience significant rainfall, covering 60%-80% of these areas.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms across 40% of the area, mainly affecting Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range between 23-25°C at the lowest and 32-35°C at the highest. Continued …

Thailand’s BOI Approves $870 Million in New Investment Projects

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has approved investment applications worth a total of 28.6 billion baht (US$870 million) in digital infrastructure and travel sector projects, as well as improved incentives for the use of local content in the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EV) and hybrids, as well as electrical appliances (E&E).

The largest project approved is Stratus Technology Co.’s plan to invest 23.7 billion baht to build a Tier 3 data center with an IT load of approximately 203 megawatts (MW). Thai-Cambodian border closure could lead to a 60-billion-baht decline in border exports if the situation persists until the end of the year, the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) warned yesterday.

Authorities have set a final deadline ofJuly 7 for the demolition of more than 30 beachside buildings in Hua Hin that have been deemed illegal due to encroachment on public coastal land.

The buildings in question include homes, guesthouses, and seafood restaurants, many of which have become familiar fixtures in the area over several decades. Ongoing road improvement works in the Takiab area

Local officials have carried out an on-site inspection of ongoing road-improvement works in the Takiab area, as part of efforts to upgrade road conditions and improve safety for motorists. Hua Hin installs high-capacity water pumps to help prevent flooding

Hua Hin has begun operating two high-capacity water pumps to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season. The pumps, provided by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (Region 4), are diesel-powered and capable of discharging 31,500 liters of water per minute. They have been installed at two key locations — at the end of the Khlong Takiab canal and near the Huana Reservoir.

Road safety shock: Pedestrian deaths on the rise

A new report on deaths among footpath users is shocking and unacceptable. On Monday, the Department of Disease Control released its safety report, saying 5,066 pedestrians were killed in accidents from 2015 to 2024, or 506 deaths annually.

Thailand’s trade deficit with China has widened significantly, reaching 768 billion baht in the first five months of 2025 (January–May) — a sharp increase of over 200 billion baht from the same period last year, according to a report from the Ministry of Commerce.

Thailand car production rises for first time in nearly 2 years

Car production in Thailand rose 10.3% in May from a year earlier, with the first annual rise in 22 months helped by higher pickup truck output for export markets, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on  Tuesday.

The government needs to reconsider its plan to increase the daily minimum wage in Bangkok to 400 baht from July 1, as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot bear additional costs in such a weak economy, which is expected to slow further in the second half of this year, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Large-scale layoffs in the hotel sector could be seen during this low season if the government agrees to raise the minimum wage to 400 baht from next week as planned, while the Thai Hotels Assn.(THA) has submitted a petition to the prime minister, asking for the policy to be cancelled.

Phuket officials have reported that 28,809 foreign tourists have been fined for traffic violations on the island to date in 2025. Russian visitors topped the list with 3,121 cases, followed by tourists from China (1,721), the UK (1,419), France (1,365), and India (1,069).

“I followed a traffic policeman on a bike all the way up Soi 88 from town to the one and only set of traffic lights. I thought I’d do a little experiment. In that 8kms, I witnessed him pass 11 people without helmets. Did he do anything, NO! All he seemed interested in was watching the farang in his mirrors 50 meters behind him that he couldn’t do anything about because I was driving legally! New rules! Total BS! Someone needs to get a grip on policeman plod!” – BP

Editor: I guess the good news was that there actually were police doing a patrol. Usually they just stay in their air-conditioned offices until they are called to do something. We have also done a similar experiment, counting 32 people on motorcycles, and only 12 with helmets. All Thais. And yesterday we saw a woman and her three children of various ages on a motorbike. Only the mother had a helmet. Can most Thais even afford helmets for their children, who will outgrow them in short order? Bottom line: Farang need to get used to the double standard. It’s not going to change. We’re guests in this country, so follow the law, even if it does not seem fair.

A plankton bloom has transformed the waters off Wong Amat Beach in Pattaya from crystal clear to a dark green hue. The phenomenon, first noticed late on Thursday by local fishermen, became more pronounced around midday yesterday. Witnesses reported the sea water turning a murky, green tea-like color, accompanied by a pungent, sulphur-like odor.

The cabinet yesterday approved a proposal from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to bid to host Formula 1 races in Thailand for five consecutive years, starting in 2028, subject to approval by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the sport’s governing body, and other F1-related entities.

Cabinet approves EV bus leasing for Bangkok

Hua Hin City Municipality is moving forward with plans to host this year’s Hua Hin Food Festival, with the event set to return in August. A preparatory meeting was held last week to plan the 2025 edition of the popular annual festival, which draws large crowds eager to sample a diverse selection of culinary offerings.

  • Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in BangkokThe first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

    For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.
