From space missions to smart factories

Personal computers, GPS, mobile phones, digital cameras, the internet: many of the technologies in our lives today are older than we might think. They originate from concepts from the 1960s and 70s – an enormously creative, innovative period.

Another innovation on everyone’s mind is the digital twin, which many scientists and engineers today describe as the backbone of a new industrial revolution. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object. This digital counterpart enables real-time monitoring, diagnostics and predictive maintenance, which significantly increases operational efficiency. Continued …

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. When I entered the Amazenia zone, I was startled to see hundreds of visitors in an extended queue that stretched across a shaded bridge from a walkway. Continued …

Rethinking Loy Krathong celebrations for a sustainable future

There is a growing concern about the environmental impact of the traditional Loy Krathong festival, particularly regarding the disposal of floating lanterns and offerings in the water. While the festival is a cherished cultural practice, there are growing calls for a balance between celebration and sustainability.

The remnants of krathongs, often made of non-biodegradable materials, lead to pollution, and many festival-goers experience discomfort when faced with the unpleasant task of cleanup afterward. Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Cool

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, one of the pressing challenges is finding ways to stay cool during increasingly hot summers without exacerbating the problem. Traditional air conditioning is a double-edged sword; it provides relief from the heat but also contributes significantly to global warming.

Cooling is the second largest driver of electricity demand after industry, currently accounting for 20% of electricity consumption globally. Following current trends, the capacity of cooling equipment is expected to triple by 2050 – rising from 22 TW in 2022 to 58 TW in 2050 – the equivalent of 16 billion mini-split air-conditioning units, resulting in a more than doubling of electricity consumption. Developing countries begin to say no to waste colonialism from developed nations

Despite China’s ban on solid waste imports three years ago, developed countries continue to exploit regulatory loopholes to export waste to developing countries, including China, avoiding higher recycling costs at home. A key driver of this issue is the profitability and low risk of waste trafficking. Developed countries, aiming to cut costs, use “waste colonialism” as a tactic, exporting plastic and other low-value waste, Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs says. On Sept. 21, the Pheu Thai Party posted a statement on its website defending its decision to legalize casino-entertainment complexes. It is justifying its decision with the argument that it will crack down on underworld activities and generate tax revenues from gambling. Continued …

Tourism Levy will take at least six months to implement even after a cabinet decision

Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Surawong Thienthong, last week again committed the government to introducing the long-awaited foreign tourist levy. The measure has divided the foreign tourism industry in Thailand. Some oppose the move as another tax on the industry, while the proposal for automatic insurance coverage for visitors is seen as a forward-thinking move.

Thai visitor arrivals stats prove link between tourism and peace

Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. That expectation has now been tempered to 35-37 million in view of the extremely fragile and flammable global scenario and the impact of the upcoming electronic travel authorization requirement. The Rising Energy Demand in Southeast Asia and Its Global Implications

Southeast Asia is emerging as a critical player in global energy markets, driven by rapid economic growth and demographic expansion. According to the 2024 Southeast Asia Energy Outlook by the International Energy Agency (IEA), energy demand in the region is set to rise sharply, second only to India in terms of the increase scale. Between 2010 and 2035, the area will account for over 25% of global energy demand growth, a significant jump from its 11% share between 2010 and 2020.

This rise in energy consumption is underpinned by Southeast Asia’s role as a global industrial hub and its growing population. By 2030, the region will be one of the five largest economies globally, with over 720 million residents. This increase in demand highlights the urgent need to balance energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. Continued …

Creating a ‘Goldilocks’ business climate for all

Whenever the odds seem stacked against human progress – when economic growth looks set to remain feeble, when too many countries appear destined to grow old before they become rich, when climate change seems out of control – it is worth remembering the distinctive virtue of our species. Human ingenuity is the reason why predictions of global doom, which have proliferated throughout our history, have never materialized.

It was ingenuity that defused the so-called “population bomb”, the 1970s threat that “hundreds of millions of people” would starve to death as rapid population growth exhausted finite supplies of food. Instead, agricultural innovations such as high-yield, pest-resistant crops caused global food production to grow faster than the population in nearly every part of the world. Continued …

The World Bank has called for a leap from billions to trillions of dollars in investment to truly make a difference.

The Asia-Pacific region, including Thailand, is no exception to this challenge. In fact, no SDG is on track to be achieved by 2030 in the region. At its current pace, the goals won’t be met until 2062 — 32 years behind schedule. Continued …
