Thailand’s economy experienced growth in Q4

Thailand’s economy in December expanded from the previous month, supported by higher merchandise exports, particularly technology-related and agricultural products. Private consumption, especially in services, improved following government support measures.

Thailand Personal Spending Largest Since 2022

Private consumption indicators in Thailand climbed 2.5% month-on-month in December, rebounding from a 0.3% fall in November and marking the sharpest rise since April 2022. Gains were broad-based across all spending categories, with growth in services spending led by hotels and restaurants, partly supported by government stimulus measures.

Durable goods consumption also strengthened, driven by higher vehicle sales, including accelerated electric-vehicle purchases ahead of the EV 3.0 scheme expiration and new model launches at the Motor Expo. Continued …

Instant commerce reshaping Thai retail

The rapid emergence of instant commerce in Thailand, a retail evolution defined by delivery within a few hours, will become the new battlefield for on-demand players and e-commerce platforms, say brands.

This reflects a shift in consumer expectations toward hyper-convenience, forcing brands to transition from physical shelf space to digital screen visibility. The move comes as traditional e-commerce matures, with instant commerce offering massive growth potential through data-driven insights and the ability to capture impulsive “micro-moments”. Gold prices hit a record high above $5,500 due to US-Iran tensions, with expectations of the Federal Reserve moving to rate cuts, pushing the baht to strengthen below 31 baht per dollar, the strongest in almost five years.

The Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) forecasts that the Thai baht could continue to strengthen, testing 31.00 and 30.70 baht per dollar during the first 3-6 months of 2026. This is primarily driven by the rise in gold prices and external factors. Continued …

While the sector remains a cornerstone of the national GDP, this post-pandemic era has exposed structural vulnerabilities and a profound shift in source markets, forcing the Kingdom to rethink its economic model. Continued …

AOT to raise passenger service charge for international flights from May

Airports of Thailand (AOT) confirmed plans to increase the passenger service charge (PSC) for international departures in May this year. While the increase will largely affect foreign travelers, AOT insisted that it will not reduce the number of international visitors to Thailand.

The chief executive officer of AOT, Paweena Jariyathitipong, told local media that the PSC for passengers departing on international flights will rise from 730 baht per person to 1,120 baht per person. The charge for inbound international flights will remain unchanged. Continued …

A canal journey into Bangkok’s quiet soul

For much of its history, Bangkok was less a city of roads than a city of water. Canals once carried not only goods and people but habits of life — how neighbors greeted one another, how monks moved between temples, how food and ideas circulated. Long before expressways and sky trains defined the urban rhythm, water was the city’s infrastructure.

That earlier tempo is what the Tourism Authority of Thailand, working with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and cultural partners, is trying to recover with a new route called Lad Lor Long Krung — “Explore Bangkok Through the City’s Historic Waterways.” Continued …

Black leopard photographed in Kaeng Krachan National Park

A foreign tourist captured photographs of a black leopard in Kaeng Krachan National Park on Jan. 4, a sighting that park officials say underlines the strong ecological condition of Thailand’s largest natural World Heritage site. Black leopards, also known as melanistic leopards, are a protected species in Thailand and are widely regarded by conservationists as an indicator of healthy forest conditions, requiring large, undisturbed habitats, and a stable prey base. The park includes other popular sites such as the Pa La-U Waterfall, which is easily accessible from Hua Hin and frequently visited by day-trippers. (HHT)

‘Recession’ a concern, says Thai business group

Thailand’s economy is bracing for its weakest expansion in 30 years, with GDP growth projected at less than 2% in 2026, attributed to sluggish exports, high household debt, and declining competitiveness in global markets, warns the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB).

The growth projection does not include years when Thailand faced crises, including the pandemic that caused GDP to contract by 6.1% in 2020. Continued …

Headline inflation set to see slight rise

Average headline inflation is expected to rise slightly in 2026, driven by increasing prices of agricultural products and the recovery of the tourism sector, according to the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).

The TPSO estimates average headline inflation of 0%-1.0%, with a midpoint of 0.5%, rising from a 0.14% contraction in 2025. Nantapong Chiralerspong, director-general of the TPSO, said the headline consumer price index (CPI) fell by 0.28% year-on-year to 100.19 in December. Continued …

Thai Middle Class Braced for Tax Hikes

Leading economists have issued a stark warning over the proliferation of short-term populist campaign pledges, asserting that these policies are laying a “fiscal trap” that threatens Thailand’s long-term economic sovereignty and its international credit standing.

Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) entitled “They Hand Out, But We Pay: Time to End Populism,” Athiphat Muthitacharoen of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics warned that the nation is entering a “deeply concerning” fiscal phase. Foreign condo transfers slump

Thailand’s property market is facing another major test in 2026, after new figures from the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) of the Government Housing Bank pointed to a clear slowdown in foreign demand in 2025 — long viewed as a key engine of the condominium market.

A global economic slowdown has hit foreign condo demand hard, with the first nine months of 2025 showing sharp declines in both volume and value, as Chinese buyers — still the largest group — pulled back amid liquidity strains. In contrast, Indian buyers have emerged as a fast-rising force, typically purchasing larger, higher-priced units for real residential use. Continued …

Gloomy outlook dampens prospects for eateries

The outlook for the restaurant industry in 2026 appears grim as there are no new positive factors. A Thai Michelin-starred chef urged restaurant operators to think carefully about business expansion.

Thitid Tassanakajohn, a renowned Thai chef and restaurateur, said the restaurant industry last year was affected by people cutting back their budgets for dining out and a stagnant economy, while foreign tourist arrivals declined year-on-year. Continued …

Health and wellness are increasingly viewed as a new form of luxury, driving lifestyle changes and fueling rapid growth across global well-being industries this year. Dr. Tanupol Virunhagarun, chief executive of BDMS Wellness Clinic and BDMS Wellness Resort, said the wellness trend will continue expanding over the next five years worldwide.

Thailand has recorded the fastest growth rate at 28.4% annually, far above the global average of 7.6%, generating more than 120 billion baht a year. The country remains among the world’s top wellness destinations, ranking 15th last year, though down from seventh in 2019. Continued …

Nine countries to introduce tourist tax this year

Tourism has surged beyond pre-pandemic levels, placing pressure on popular cities, islands, and natural landmarks. By charging tourists, governments aim to generate dedicated funding to manage crowds, upgrade infrastructure, and preserve destinations, while allowing tourism to continue.

International travel is set to become more expensive as several countries introduce new tourist taxes and visitor fees. From entry charges and hotel levies to higher fees at museums and national parks, travelers planning trips in 2026 will need to account for additional costs at multiple stages of their journey. The Land of Smiles is no empty tagline. With an innate sense of graciousness and a natural flair for service, it comes as no surprise that hospitality is a field in which Thais truly excel.

Here, hospitality is not merely a profession but part of the cultural fabric — one that has helped position Thailand as a powerhouse in the global luxury hotel landscape. Meanwhile, strong monsoonal winds are expected to affect the south and coastal areas starting this weekend.

US Invasion of Venezuela Shock Lends Strength to Thai Baht

The Thai baht is experiencing a strong rally this week, trading between 31.00 to 31.85 to the US dollar. This strength comes amid a surge in global gold prices, prompted by the US invasion of Venezuela. The move has created a ripple effect in markets, attracting capital inflows to Thailand’s bond sector.

Kanjana Chockpisansin of Kasikorn Research Center notes that by midday yesterday, foreign purchases of Thai bonds reached 1.4 billion baht. The Stock Exchange of Thailand has also seen increased foreign interest, with the index rising 1.8% to 1,282 points. “The gold price surge, influenced by US military operations in Venezuela, boosted the baht from 31.55 to 31.30 against the dollar,” she said. Finance minister unveils 2026 plan, aims for 2% GDP growth

Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas has set out a plan to steer the economy through the transition period before a new government takes office, saying the administration will rely on pre-approved “quick win” measures to sustain momentum and support growth toward 2% in 2026.

Thai exports to ‘normalize’ in 2026 with 2%-4% growth forecast, shippers warn

Thailand’s exports are expected to keep expanding in 2026, but at a more modest pace of 2%-4%, as the surge seen in 2025 fades and the sector returns to a more “normalized” growth path, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said.

Thanakorn Kasetsuwan, chairman of the TNSC, said the council expects export growth in 2026 to be lower than 2025’s double-digit rebound. He described 2026 as a period of normalization after a strong recovery in 2025, which was boosted by a low base and the acceleration of orders in some periods. Continued …

Cannabis shops face clampdown

The Ministry of Public Health is pushing to enact a new ministerial regulation on cannabis before the next government takes office, with the draft now under review by the Office of the Council of State.

The regulation, recently forwarded for legal scrutiny, would mark a major shift in the cannabis sector by restricting sales to designated venues such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, herbal shops, and authorized folk-healer premises. Will Thailand’s 2026 election reshape tourism, foreign investment, and transport policy?

As Thailand moves toward its 2026 general election, the future of the country’s tourism industry has become a central issue for investors, operators, and local communities. With tourism accounting for a significant share of national income, the policies adopted by the next government are expected to influence foreign direct investment, public safety, and long-term infrastructure planning, particularly in rail transport.

Tourism officials say the election comes at a decisive moment. International travel demand has continued to recover, while competition within Southeast Asia has intensified. Neighboring countries are expanding airports, upgrading rail links, and offering incentives to global investors. For Thailand, the question is whether the next administration can deliver consistent policy direction and renewed confidence. Continued …

Thai Army Reclaims Border Territory from Cambodia, Denies Invasion Claims

The Thai Army has announced it has reclaimed its territory long encroached upon by Cambodia, dismissing allegations of invasion. Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree clarified that actions taken were within Thai borders, countering assertions from Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claiming otherwise.

For several decades, tensions have simmered at the Thai-Cambodian border, with disputes over territorial boundaries. Winthai claimed that Cambodia had established both military bases and civilian infrastructure in large areas of Thai territory. These encroachments led to numerous protests from Thailand without any resolution until now. Continued …

Thai Army Exposes Cambodian War Crimes and Human Shield Tactics

The Thai military issued a scathing condemnation of Cambodian forces yesterday, exposing evidence of systematic war crimes and the use of human shields along the disputed border. The Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Joint Information Center urged the international community to look past “propaganda” and examine verified facts regarding violations of Thai sovereignty and international law.

Official reports indicate that Cambodian armed forces have intentionally stationed troops and ammunition depots within civilian centers to serve as human shields, a grave breach of international humanitarian law. This strategy reportedly forces military conflict into populated areas, directly endangering non-combatants and violating the principle of precaution. Continued …

Thailand’s Property Market Navigating Crisis

Thailand’s property sector endured its most punishing year in decades throughout 2025, with household debt, stringent lending conditions, and collapsing purchasing power battering the market. Yet, major developers are unveiling distinct 2026 strategies — from luxury pivots to multinational expansion — while economists warn that structural headwinds will persist.

The numbers reveal stark distress. KKP Research projects nationwide property transfers declined 6% in 2025, following a 15% drop in 2023 that pushed volumes to a seven-year low. Continued …

Outlook remains cloudy for 2026

With Thailand’s economy in 2026 projected to grow modestly at around 1.5%, several business sectors have begun preparing for potential headwinds – some persisting from last year and others emerging as new risks, particularly with a planned general election in February.

With global and domestic headwinds pressuring the Thai economy this year, the new government should consider “focused domestic intervention” measures to enhance tourism and attract foreign investments in specific sectors, says the Thai unit of German insurer Allianz.

The anticipated service, initially set for 2029, is now expected to commence in 2030. This setback arises largely from complications with the high-speed rail’s interface with the three-airport rail link and unresolved land acquisition challenges. Continued …

Ministry launches new push to tap into ‘medical economy’

Climate change reshaping economic outlook

While many business leaders highlight political and economic flashpoints, from Donald Trump’s tariff policies to the US-China trade war and Thai-Cambodian border tensions, Treethep argued that global campaigns to curb carbon emissions pose a more pressing challenge. Continued …

Exporters face another tough year

Thailand’s exports in 2026 are expected to face volatility and challenges due to a global economic slowdown that is dampening demand in key trading nations.

Thailand National Parks Welcome More than 500,000 Visitors During New Year’s

More than 500,000 visitors visited Thailand’s national parks on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Such interest points out the growth of ecotourism and nature-based tourism in Thailand, making the country’s natural attractions all but basic to its overall tourism development policy. With Khao Yai being the most popular destination, this wave of visitors shows just how important national parks are going to be for Thai tourism in the future.

Khao Yai National Park was the standout destination during the holiday period, attracting 60,235 visitors on New Year’s Day, solidifying its position as a major draw for both local and international tourists. Known for its diverse wildlife, lush forests, and scenic landscapes, Khao Yai continues to be one of Thailand’s most iconic eco-tourism spots. Continued …

Pattaya to stay popular, but not in the way Thai government hopes

As Thailand’s tourism sector enters 2026, some foreign visitors are raising concerns over the rising cost of enjoying Pattaya’s nightlife and attractions. Despite high visitor numbers, local bars and restaurants report low takings, with many international tourists — particularly from India, Korea, and China — spending primarily within their own cultural establishments rather than at local businesses.

Several people shared their opinions on the challenges facing the city. One noted that the strong Thai baht makes the destination less of a value compared to neighboring countries like Vietnam or Cambodia. Others pointed out the impact of strict regulations, multiple pricing systems, and complex immigration rules on the visitor experience. Continued …

My Hip Surgery in Thailand Cost a Third of the US Price — With a Sea View

The first time I ever spent a night in the hospital was in Bangkok. A CT scan during my annual check-up revealed a condition requiring the opinion of a specialist. I was panic-stricken.

As I sat in the waiting area for the Urology Clinic at Bumrungrad International Hospital, my head was swimming with questions. Should I fly home to the US? Will they take my insurance here? This hospital sure is nice, but do these people know what they’re doing? Continued …

The blooming season typically runs from December through February, drawing thousands of domestic and international tourists to Udon Thani province. Continued …

Thai Food in US to Thrive as Dining-Out Trend Soars

Thai food businesses in the United States are poised for growth in 2026, fueled by an increasing trend of dining out. Director-General Sunanta Kangvalkulkij of the Commerce Ministry’s Department of International Trade Promotion cited recent consumer behavior surveys as proof of this surge.

A report from the department’s Chicago office highlights an 8% rise in the number of American consumers opting for dining out in 2025, with this trend expected to grow further in 2026. On average, consumers dined out 10 times monthly, with Millennials reaching up to 14 times. Continued …

Conservation makes a splash in Thailand’s coastal waters

For most visitors to Thailand, diving is a recreational pursuit – a chance to glimpse sharks, turtles, and seahorses drifting through tropical waters. But on the small island of Koh Tao, divers are increasingly using their trips to help protect marine ecosystems under pressure from climate change.

To meet rising demand for environmentally minded experiences, many of the island’s 80-plus dive schools now offer “eco-dives,” which allow volunteers to help restore damaged reefs. Continued …

2026 car market: world hits the brakes on EVs as hybrids rise

The global automotive industry is facing its biggest “policy shock” in a decade, as a compass that once pointed firmly toward electric vehicles (EVs) begins to swing back. Analysts at Cox Automotive and Edmunds agree the industry is approaching a major turning point.

The pressure is no longer just competition between internal combustion engine cars and EVs, but also slowing economies in many countries, shifting government policies, and consumers’ weakening purchasing power. Continued …

America: Global Cop or Global Mafia State?

The “large-scale” invasion and abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Saturday, under the order of US President Donald Trump, marks a return of American unilateralism and exceptionalism with a bang.

Europe, still dependent on the US security umbrella, didn’t dare to come up with a unified denunciation. One EU leader even tacitly welcomed the regime change by the superpower nation — or the rogue superpower. Continued …

What would happen if Iran’s Khamenei falls?

The demonstrations began again in Iran last week, only two years after the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement convulsed the country for months. However, the current protests are potentially much broader than that episode because they are driven by the collapse in Iran’s currency, the rial (now 1,420,000 to the US dollar), and the explosive rise in the cost of living. ASEAN-China trade to top US$984 billion as Chinese FDI surges in region

ASEAN has overtaken the European Union to become China’s largest trading partner since 2020, and two-way trade in 2025 is on track to exceed 2024’s record of US$984 billion, according to HSBC Global Investment Research.

In a research note by an ASEAN economist at HSBC Global Investment Research, the bank said ASEAN’s widening trade deficit with China partly reflects deeper supply-chain integration, especially in electronics and electrical machinery (E&E). Around 30% of ASEAN’s exports to China are E&E products, and roughly 30% of its imports from China come from the same sector — a dynamic that particularly benefits tech-linked economies such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Thailand wins the currency game and loses the tourist

While official arrival numbers continue to paint a picture of recovery, many foreign visitors and long-term winter residents in Pattaya say the reality on the ground tells a very different story. A persistently strong Thai baht is quietly reshaping tourist behavior, slashing spending, and raising uncomfortable questions about who Thailand’s tourism economy is really serving.

For European visitors in particular, the currency shift has been stark. Just a year ago, exchange rates hovered near 37 baht to the euro. Today, closer to 36 — and at times stronger — the difference may appear marginal on paper, but over a three- to four-month stay it translates into tens of thousands of baht lost in purchasing power. How much can one nation endure in a single year? In 2025, Thailand found the answer, as the pillars of faith, law, and land shattered under the weight of a perfect storm.

The ground is shaking, and we Thais know well that it isn’t just one pillar failing — it is the entire structure of our society. Looking back, the trouble began when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake, the strongest to hit the region in over a century, rocked Bangkok. Continued …

Thailand, rewritten: Where travel learns to slow down

Travel has entered a reflective era. What once promised escape now seeks alignment, asking not how far one can go, but how deeply one is willing to arrive. In this landscape, the most rewarding journeys offer fewer highlights and greater resonance, leaving travelers not overstimulated, but recalibrated.

Few destinations understand this shift as intuitively as Thailand. Long before sustainability became a global conversation, Thai life was shaped by sufficiency, seasonal rhythms, and community interdependence. What has changed today is the clarity with which these values are being shared, guided by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, inviting travelers to experience the country with greater awareness and intention. 2026 Rooftop Solar Buyer’s Guide: What Thai homeowners should look for

According to Techatat Buranaaudsawakul, chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT), rooftop solar should be treated as part of a home’s critical electrical infrastructure, not simply an add-on appliance.

“Safety is a top priority for rooftop solar,” Techatat said “A solar energy system must be designed and installed to the same safety standards as any other electrical system in the house. If homeowners focus only on cost savings without understanding safety requirements and system efficiency, they may expose their families and properties to unnecessary risks.” Continued …

‘No rush’ to install solar panels

Homeowners should not rush into installing rooftop solar panels in the hope of securing tax rebates before the government’s official program begins, according to MEA Smart Energy Solution (MEAei), a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

The government has pledged tax reductions of up to 200,000 baht for 90,000 households that adopt solar technology. However, Poramate Pichitanont, renewable energy manager for MEAei, warned that early installations will not qualify for the incentives. Continued …

EGAT evaluating small nuclear, hydrogen fuel cell tech

As Thailand aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, relevant agencies must explore solutions for electricity generation such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

Why Thailand’s wellness economy is poised to lead Asia’s aging future

Thailand is entering a demographic turning point. Within a few years, almost one-third of the population will be over 60 years old. Births have fallen below deaths, and the country is on a clear path toward becoming a super-aged society. This shift carries deep consequences for fiscal sustainability, labor productivity and long-term growth.

At the same time, the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions is placing unprecedented strain on the health system. According to the World Health Organization, NCDs already account for 74% of all deaths in Thailand — imposing both direct medical costs and large productivity losses estimated in the hundreds of billions of baht annually. Thailand Faces 40 Road Deaths Daily as Drunk Driving Persists

Thailand’s road crisis is making headlines as civil society groups highlight the grim reality of 40 fatalities daily and losses reaching 600 billion baht annually. These groups are advocating for tough measures against drunk drivers, including vehicle confiscation during the New Year 2026.

In the lead-up to the upcoming New Year festivities, civil society networks, including the Foundation Against Drunk Driving, are raising alarm over the surge in road deaths, particularly during the “seven dangerous days.” Continued …

Unsafe levels of smog cover Bangkok, 26 provinces

Ultra-fine dust reached unsafe levels in Bangkok and 26 provinces this morning, primarily in the Central Plains, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported that particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and smaller (PM2.5) ranged from 38.2 to 67.9 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) in the affected areas. The safe threshold for PM2.5 set by the Thai government is 37.5 µg/m³. Continued …

Cannabis Shops Must Become 100% Clinics Under New Thai Law

In a major shake-up, Thailand’s cannabis shops must now transform into fully-fledged clinics to continue operating. Despite existing licenses, all outlets need to reregister and must employ certified medical professionals onsite. This rule follows a new governmental decree aiming for stricter regulation to ensure cannabis is used solely for medical purposes.

Yesterday, Dr. Thewan Thaneerat, deputy director-general of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, announced the cabinet’s approval of a draft ministerial regulation. The regulation requires cannabis shops to upgrade their operations to comply with new medicinal standards by January–February. The goal is to elevate over 10,000 licensed cannabis shops into medical facilities or clinics that meet the Ministry of Public Health’s approval. Continued …

The Thai Customs Department has announced a landmark policy shift that will see all imported goods taxed from the first baht, effectively ending the long-standing tax exemption for items valued under 1,500 baht. The new regulations are set to come into force on Jan. 1.

Car exports decline 12%

Thailand’s car exports dropped 12% year-on-year between January and November to 78,692 units, as internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles lost ground in overseas markets amid growing competition, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Surapong Paisitpatanapong, FTI vice chairman and spokesman for the federation’s Automotive Industry Club, said the decline stemmed from global automakers phasing out ICE models in favor of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), new carbon emission taxes on oil-fuelled cars in some countries, and the economic slowdown among Thailand’s trade partners. Thailand construction sector at a critical juncture

The Thai construction industry stands at a critical juncture, grappling with persistent challenges that threaten its long-term viability. A recent analysis by the Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) highlights a sector besieged by low labor productivity, escalating costs, liquidity concerns, and the growing imperative to align with global sustainability trends. However, the report also offers a clear path forward: embracing technology and fostering international partnerships.

For years, productivity in the Thai construction workforce has lagged behind other industries, showing only a modest 2.7% CAGR over the past decade, significantly lower than sectors like hospitality and food services. This structural issue, coupled with business constraints such as limited new project acquisitions and rising operational costs, has created a precarious financial landscape for many contractors. Thai Hotels Group Sees Foreign Arrivals at About 33 Million in 2026

Thailand’s hotel industry expects the number of foreign visitors to hold steady at around 33 million in 2026, despite economic uncertainty, weather disruptions, and regional tensions, the Thai Hotels Assn. said.

Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the association, said hotel revenues grew in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared with the previous quarter, driven by an increase in long-haul travelers and government domestic tourism stimulus programs. Those measures, including the government-subsidized domestic tourism scheme and the government travel tax refund program, helped support revenues, particularly at four-star hotels and above. Thailand eyes Chinese tourism market

As political tensions continue to divert Chinese tourists from Japan to other countries, Thai tourism operators are urging authorities to take a more aggressive approach in attracting this market, reinforcing safety perceptions to compete with other Asia-Pacific nations targeting tourists from the mainland.

Chinese tourists have canceled hundreds of thousands of trips to Japan since November, after China issued warnings to its citizens over a diplomatic spat concerning Taiwan. The dispute follows Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stating a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo. Continued …

Why ‘Hands-Free Travel’ Is Becoming a Key Trend for Visitors to Thailand

As the New Year holiday season approaches, Thailand tourism continues to attract a growing number of international travelers seeking leisure, culture, and convenience. Alongside the continued momentum of tourism, however, one familiar challenge remains unchanged: crowded airports, tight schedules, and the growing complexity of managing luggage throughout increasingly dynamic journeys.

Recent travel behavior points to a clear shift in priorities, as highlighted in global travel trend reports by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Modern travelers are placing greater value on the quality and ease of the travel experience itself. As a result, “hands-free travel” — defined as traveling without the need to physically manage luggage — is emerging as a key travel trend for 2026, particularly during peak periods such as the New Year holiday season. Spending New Year’s Eve In Thailand? Top Countdown Destinations For 2026

There is no one-size-fits-all way to celebrate New Year’s Eve, particularly in Thailand. Some people are drawn to late nights spent moving between fireworks displays and open-bar parties, gravitating toward large, high-energy gatherings where crowds come together for the countdown. New Year’s Eve, after all, has a reputation as the ultimate amateur night.

Others actively avoid the crush, preferring quiet walks through uncrowded outdoor spaces or trips to lesser-known destinations, where the turn of the year is marked with smaller, more intimate celebrations away from the big cities. Continued …

Thailand Intensifies Military Response as Border Conflict with Cambodia Escalates

Thai military forces engaged in sustained combat operations along the Thailand-Cambodia border yesterday, responding to what officials described as intensified attacks by Cambodian forces across multiple strategic positions. Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri briefed reporters at the Joint Press Center on Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, detailing significant military activity in the preceding hours.

In the Second Army area, Thai positions came under sustained bombardment from Cambodian BM-21 multiple rocket launchers, explosive drones, and kamikaze drones throughout the morning. Continued …

Cambodia Unleashes Heavy Artillery and Rocket Barrage

Full-scale hostilities have resumed along the border between Thailand and Cambodia, with Cambodian forces launching a sustained bombardment against four provinces in Thailand’s southern Isaan region since the early hours of this morning.

The Second Army Area Command confirmed that Cambodian soldiers initiated the attack at approximately 5:20 am local time, firing artillery shells and BM-21 rockets into Thai territory along the entire border. Continued …

Cambodia Vows Fierce Fight Against Thailand

Cambodia’s powerful Senate President Hun Sen yesterday vowed that his country would carry out a fierce fight against Thailand as a second day of widespread renewed combat between the Southeast Asian neighbors drove tens of thousands of people to flee border areas.

Hun Sen claimed that his country had refrained from firing back on Monday, but overnight began to shoot back at Thai forces. He wrote that a strategy of concentrating on where Thailand was advancing would allow Cambodia to “to weaken and destroy enemy forces through counterattacks.” Continued …

Thailand unlikely to ease up on military actions – at least for now

Judging from statements from the prime minister down to the army generals and the country’s top diplomat, it’s quite clear that Thailand is unlikely to ease up on its military operation against Cambodia any time soon, as fighting along several border areas continues for the fourth day today.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Tuesday reaffirmed that his government fully supports the armed forces in their operation in response to Cambodian aggression. “There is no stopping now. We have pledged our full support for the armed forces to proceed with their operation,” he said in response to a reporter’s question about whether his government might agree to a pause in the military operation as the last government did at the height of the previous round of border skirmishes in late July. Cambodia ‘ready at any time’ for talks to end conflict, PM adviser says

Cambodia is open to immediate bilateral talks with Thailand to halt their border conflict, a top adviser to its prime minister said yesterday, after the neighbors accused each other of violating a truce.

The countries fired at each other, including using artillery, along much of their 817-km (508-mile) land border on a second day of sustained hostilities. At least 13 people have died and hundreds of thousands have fled their homes on both sides of the border in the two days since the heaviest fighting resumed. Continued …

Border Conflict Threatens Thailand’s Political Timetable as PM Seeks Full War Powers

The renewed eruption of conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border is poised to redraw Thailand’s domestic political timeline, placing significant pressure on Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his government’s tenure.

The hostilities may compel the government to postpone the dissolution of Parliament, ensuring it retains the full executive authority necessary to manage a state of war and potentially leverage a wave of nationalist fervor to recoup political popularity diminished by recent flooding crises. Continued …

Thailand and Cambodia Militaries Compared Amid Border Clashes

Thailand has launched air strikes along its disputed border with Cambodia, escalating tensions after both countries accused each other of violating a ceasefire. The Thai military confirmed the strikes on Monday, marking a sharp deterioration in an already volatile situation. The immediate impact has heightened regional concerns as military activity intensifies on both sides of the frontier.

The latest confrontation follows Thailand’s suspension of de-escalation measures last month after a Thai soldier was maimed in a landmine incident. Bangkok alleges the mines were newly laid by Cambodian forces, a claim that Cambodia rejects. Tensions have been simmering for weeks as both nations trade accusations over responsibility for repeated border incidents. Continued …

7 Cambodia civilians killed in border clashes

At least seven civilians have been killed and approximately 20 others have been injured in Cambodia amid renewed border clashes with neighboring Thailand, according to the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense.

Gripens Strike Next to Scammer Base as Cambodia Fires rockets

Thai military forces launched coordinated air and artillery strikes yesterday against a scam-operating base in Cambodia’s O Smach area, causing significant damage to an under-construction building and prompting further cross-border escalation.

The attack involved a Gripen fighter jet dropping bombs and self-propeled artillery targeting sites east of the Or Smach Resort Casino community in Uddar Meanchey Province, close to Thailand’s Chong Chom permanent checkpoint in Kap Choeng District, Surin. Explosions were heard across nearby Thai villages and fires were reported at the struck construction site, with initial reports indicating one guard dead pending confirmation. Continued …

Marines launch offensive to regain occupied Thai territory in Trat

Thai navy marines launched an operation against Cambodian troops yesterday to reclaim a border area seized by Cambodian forces. The fighting in Trat leaves neighboring Chanthaburi as the only border province free of armed clashes between the two countries.

Capt. Thammanoon Wanna, commander of the Trat Marine Task Force, said the operation to regain an area of Ban Nong Ri in tambon Chamrak, Muang district, started at 5.30 am. Three houses in the area were the prime target. Continued …

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also voiced alarm, warning that renewed hostilities risk escalating further unless both countries recommit to dialogue. Continued …

Thailand-Cambodia Economic War Paralyzes $5 Billion Trade, Threatens Vast Gas Reserves

The escalating border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has transcended a mere territorial dispute, morphing into a full-scale “economic, political, and geopolitical war.” The clashes have inflicted profound and deepening economic wounds on both nations, with the indefinite halt of cross-border trade and the dark prognosis for a multi-trillion-baht energy project threatening regional stability.

The conflict’s immediate consequence was the paralysis of trade at the vital Klong Luek–Poipet crossing, generating immense economic damage and disrupting established regional supply chains. Continued …

The Baht’s Risky Rise: Can the BoT Curb Its Momentum?

The rapid appreciation of the Thai baht, up nearly 7% year-to-date and now trading significantly below the 32-per-dollar mark, presents a mixed signal that Thailand’s economy may struggle to accommodate.

This sharp currency appreciation could potentially hinder export competitiveness, a critical driver of Thailand’s economy, while benefiting importers and dampening inflationary pressures. However, it also raises concerns for industries reliant on tourism and foreign investment, as a stronger baht makes Thailand a more expensive destination and investment option. Continued …

First Alert in 50 Years Over Global ‘Double Bubble’ Risk in Gold and Stocks

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has sounded the alarm over an unprecedented “double bubble” risk, noting that the prices of both gold and global stocks have surged simultaneously for the first time in at least 50 years. The rare warning from the BIS, often referred to as the central bank of central banks, questions the resilience of the current “risk-on” environment across global financial markets.

While the stock market has been propeled by the hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) technology, gold prices have soared by 60% this year, putting 2025 on track to be the metal’s biggest annual price leap since 1979. Continued …

Thailand Surpasses 30 million Tourist Arrivals

Thailand has exceeded 30.2 million foreign tourist arrivals for 2025, according to new data from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The milestone reflects strong short-haul demand and steady revenue generation, with visitors contributing more than 1.4 trillion baht so far this year. However, despite the high volume, total arrivals remain 7.2% lower than during the same period in 2024.

Malaysia and China were the top two source markets, each surpassing 4 million arrivals. India followed with 2,280,823 visitors, while Russia and South Korea contributed 1,685,931 and 1,438,827 arrivals, respectively. These five countries formed the backbone of Thailand’s inbound tourism throughout 2025. Continued …

Foreign tourism sector in crisis, visitor decline accelerates, 9.8% fewer arrivals than 2025

Thailand is heading for a steep plunge in foreign tourist arrivals in 2025, driven by a disastrous chain of events that began with the high-profile kidnapping of a Chinese actor earlier in the year and has only worsened since.

A surging Thai baht, conflict with Cambodia, and the Hat Yai flooding disaster have all compounded the damage, while political instability continues to erode confidence. Vietnam, meanwhile, is racing ahead with fresher experiences and far better value for money. Continued …

“By 9 a.m., the water was chest deep,” said the 40-year-old gas station worker. “It was all caused by rain.” Hat Yai, a city with a population of size similar to Britain’s Oxford, received 335 mm (13 inches) of rain that day, for its highest single-day tally in 300 years, resulting in catastrophic floods. Cabinet Approves Tax Deduction for Home Solar Systems

The Cabinet has approved a tax deduction for households installing solar rooftop systems, allowing individuals to claim up to 200,000 baht per year, including VAT. The measure aims to encourage clean energy adoption in residential areas and will be effective from the date of publication in the Royal Gazette until December 2028.

The tax deduction covers the total cost of installing solar rooftop systems, providing an immediate financial incentive for homeowners. Experts say this could significantly increase solar adoption rates and reduce household electricity costs over time. Consumers are encouraged to plan installations before the scheme expires in 2028 to maximize benefits. Continued …

Screening of foreigners entering or leaving Thailand enhanced

Immigration announced yesterday enhanced screening and verification measures for all foreign nationals entering and exiting Thailand. The initiative applies across all international airports and border checkpoints nationwide to prevent individuals disguising themselves as tourists from committing crimes or engaging in unlawful activities.

Police Major Gen. Jaturapat Bhiromkaew, deputy spokesperson, stated that the measures are preventive and applied equally to all nationalities, without targeting any specific group. Screening focuses on identifying high-risk behaviors, such as unusually frequent entries and exits, misuse of visas, or suspicious information from INTERPO and security intelligence agencies. Hat Yai continues to face severe flooding, with experts warning that the city’s economic zone will remain submerged at least until mid-December.

Assoc Prof. Seree Supratid, director of the Climate Change and Disaster Center at Rangsit University and vice president of the National Disaster Warning Council Foundation, said yesterday that despite falling water levels upstream in Sadao district, downstream flows will increase before reaching the city, exacerbating the flooding. With their food and fruit nearby, it was unclear how many days they had been living on the roof. (Thai PBS)

Hat Yai Property Market Drenched: Floods Force Major Design Overhaul

The massive “great flood,” the most severe in a quarter-century, has inflicted extensive damage on the Hat Yai real estate market. Projects located in low-lying areas were particularly affected, triggering a sharp market downturn.

Crucially, a significant cohort of buyers from the three deep southern border provinces — Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat — have deferred property purchases pending a full re-evaluation of flood risk. Continued …

Hat Yai man fires 3 shots to threaten rescuers over delayed rescue

A Thai man stranded in severe flooding in Hat Yai, Songkhla province, fired three shots into the air to threaten rescuers on jet skis over what he believed was a delayed rescue.

One of the rescuers, from Surat Thani province, posted about the incident urging residents to remain calm. “Hat Yai locals, please calm down. I can’t help everyone at once, but it doesn’t mean I don’t want to help. I had 300 food boxes but they ran out after visiting three houses because so many people were inside. I was shocked to hear gunshots behind me.” Continued …

Hat Yai inundation may force SEA Games events to Bangkok, Chon Buri

Thailand is preparing contingency plans and assessing conditions on a daily basis in case the worsening flood crisis in Hat Yai does not improve, which could necessitate the relocation to Bangkok and Chon Buri of all 10 SEA Games sports competitions scheduled to be held there.

With the games due to start on Dec. 9, Songkhla is being ravaged by one of the worst floods in decades, raising concerns over its ability to host the first major international sporting event in the province, particularly regarding the preparedness of each venue. Continued …

Thailand posts biggest trade deficit since 2023

A surge in imports from China in October pushed Thailand’s trade deficit to the biggest since early 2023, a sign of how US President Donald Trump’s tariffs have warped trade patterns in Asia.

The value of inbound shipments of capital goods and raw materials from China shot up 34% from the same month last year to US$9.8 billion, the highest level this year. Meanwhile, exports to the US rose 33% to $6.7 billion, driven by computers and parts, machinery, and steel, according to data released yesterday by the Ministry of Commerce. Continued …

Floods, slow recovery add to woes of car industry

Thailand’s automotive industry faces mounting challenges, as severe floods in the south threaten to disrupt domestic car sales and delay economic recovery during the remainder of this year, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The floods, coupled with an economic slowdown, are expected to force revisions to the industry’s outlook for the year. Despite the risks, the Automotive Industry Club is maintaining its 2025 production target of 1.45 million vehicles, comprising 950,000 for export and 500,000 for the domestic market. Continued …

Koh Tao–Samui Ferry Blunder Sends Tourists’ Bags Overboard

A tourist’s dream holiday took a turn when her luggage, along with that of several other passengers, was swept out to sea during a ferry trip in Thailand. Served by what she described as an “incompetent” crew, Alice Zamparelli witnessed her belongings floating away during a journey from Koh Tao to Koh Samui.

The incident occurred due to rough sea conditions and allegedly unsecured bags on the upper deck of the ferry. Zamparelli lamented the loss on social media, claiming she recovered 50,000 Thai baht (around £1,100) through persistent negotiation. Unfortunately, some passengers had a different outcome, missing flights and receiving no compensation, according to reports. Continued …

In 2024, the number of Saudi visitors to Thailand reached 228,032, a 28% increase from the previous year, and is expected to grow 8% this year, despite the challenges of the Iran-Israel war impacting the forecasted growth of 20%. Continued …

Hat Yai floods show Thailand is still unprepared for Climate Change

Recent severe flooding in Hat Yai is yet another wake-up call that Thailand remains unprepared to cope with climate change. This is not the first time the south has been devastated – similar floods struck Hat Yai in 2000 and 2010, and other regions have suffered from extreme weather. Yet, despite these warnings, preparedness remains inadequate.

The latest deluge dumped 635 millimeters of rain in three days, submerging central Hat Yai, stranding thousands of residents and tourists, and once again we saw how extreme weather is becoming more frequent and damaging. Continued …

Thailand’s Solar Sector Faces Trade Uncertainty Amid US Suspension

Thailand’s solar and renewable energy sector is facing fresh uncertainty following an announcement from the country’s Foreign Ministry that the United States had temporarily suspended negotiations on a critical trade framework deal. Initially, the U.S. linked the suspension to Thailand’s commitment to a truce with Cambodia, demonstrating how geopolitical issues unrelated to energy can quickly impact the renewable energy supply chain.

Although the Thai government later clarified that trade talks are expected to continue separately from the Cambodia border matter, the initial halt highlights the vulnerability of international trade agreements that currently support Southeast Asia’s manufacturing economy. Continued …

Thailand adjusts EV policy to head off supply glut

Thailand has made changes to its electric vehicle incentive policy in order to encourage exports and head off a supply glut at home, which could have an impact on the overall car market, the Board of Investment said yesterday.

Every EV produced for export will now count as 1.5 units toward a manufacturer’s local production obligations, the agency said. “This is to incentivize automakers to increase exports and prevent domestic market oversupply,” it said. Continued …
