Smoke from landfill fire engulfs Hua Hin

A noxious haze descended upon Hua Hin for days, emanating from a blaze at an old landfill between Soi 102 and Soi 112 in Thap Thai. The enduring landfill inferno stubbornly smouldered for five relentless days.

Initially subdued by recent rains, the inferno reignited Wednesday morning, spewing flames anew. The disused landfill is in Village 1, Nong Pranpuk, Thap Tai subdistrict, where over 20 rai of land is shrouded in smoke, choking the atmosphere and posing health hazards to the populace. Continued …

1.4 tons of heroin seized in Nong Khai

Four drug smugglers have been arrested and 1.4 tons of heroin smuggled across the Mekong River seized from a house and a rubber plantation in Sangkhom district of Nong Khai province.

Local officers from the Na Ngiew police station and border patrol police were dispatched to Phukhao Thong village in tambon Ban Muang on Wednesday night after an investigation revealed that a large quantity of smuggled drugs were being kept at a house in Sangkhom district of the northeastern province bordering Laos. Pranburi Bar Owner Arrested for Alleged Minor Trafficking

Police have arrested a karaoke bar owner in Pranburi district for suspected minor trafficking focused on sex trade. The arrest followed a tip-off from an anti-trafficking group about probable unlawful operations in the bar, including the involvement of individuals below 18.

Wildlife officers help baby elephant stuck in mud

Thailand wildlife officers rescued a baby elephant that was stuck in mud as they patrolled a forest for poachers last week. Rangers discovered the three-year-old animal while conducting searches at Thap Lan National Park in Prachinburi province.

They dug around the hole and laid down thin branches to create an angled pathway for the elephant to climb. The rangers were unsuccessful so returned the next day with more equipment, but the elephant had gone and adult footprints were found in the area. UOB slashes GDP growth to 2.4%

Singapore-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) is preparing to downgrade Thailand’s GDP growth forecast this year to 2.4% from 2.8%, though it expects the Bank of Thailand to trim interest rates twice to 2% by year-end to prop up the economy.

Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said the agenda for the second half includes concluding Thailand-EFTA (European Free Trade Assn.) negotiations by the end of the year (a 10th round is scheduled for August in Switzerland), the third round of Thailand-EU FTA talks in June in Belgium, and discussing an FTA with South Korea in the middle of this year, with talks expected to conclude by the end of 2025 or early 2026. Thais undeterred by record gold prices, demand remains strong

Despite record-high prices, Thailand’s gold demand remains strong, with bar and coin investment showing robust growth in contrast to declining demand for gold jewelry, according to the World Gold Council (WGC) first-quarter Gold Demand Trends Report.

Bus driver dies, 29 passengers hurt in Lampang tour bus crash

A bus driver died and 29 passengers, both Thai and international, were injured- with two sustaining serious injuries- following a bus crash on Tuesday night. The tour bus was en route from Chiang Mai to Bangkok when it lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree.

The incident took place on Phahonyothin Road, Ban Mae Tia, in the Thoen district of Lampang province. The driver was entrapped in the steering wheel and was declared dead at the scene despite emergency workers’ efforts to free him using hand tools. Continued …

A Kuwait Airways flight from Bangkok to Kuwait was forced to return after a violent confrontation erupted among a group of female passengers from Kuwait. The situation intensified to such an extent that even the plane’s security officer was assaulted.

Pattaya officials provide free water to drought-hit Koh Larn island

Caps on diesel, cooking gas, power to continue for now

The Cabinet has given the go-ahead to extend three subsidies in a bid to continue easing people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

The measures are: Capping the retail price of diesel at 33 baht per lit; capping cooking gas at 423 baht per 15kg canister; capping electricity at 19.05 baht per unit for households using less than 300 units per month. Continued …

Hua Hin suffers agricultural losses following Tuesday’s storm

A powerful summer storm on Tuesday left a trail of destruction across several districts, with local farms, particularly durian orchards, bearing the brunt of the damage. Tuesday’s storm was the first significant rainfall the region has seen in nearly five months. #huahin

Trang Tourist Boat Overturns, One Fatality

A severe incident occurred at sea near the Pak Meng Bridge, Trang Sea, when a long-tail tourist boat carrying 14 occupants capsized. Tragically, a 68-year-old woman died.

British tourist faces 20 years in jail for cocaine hidden in passport

Jamie Louis Swain, 29, from Enfield, North London, could face up to 20 years in a Thai prison after reportedly being caught with cocaine hidden in his passport. Swain was arrested at Phuket International Airport on his arrival on an Etihad Airways flight on Thursday night.

Growing drug problem grips Phuket as arrests increase by 6.21%

Phuket, an island mainly known for its tourism, is grappling with an escalating drug problem, according to the Phuket Provincial Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Center committee. The drug issue has seen a 6.21% increase between October last year and March this year, with 1,335 arrests made in 78 drug-related cases, excluding kratom and marijuana.

Thai consumer price index rises 0.19%

Hua Hin takes ‘long term’ measures to improve water supply

Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. The ongoing drought in Thailand’s Buriram province has resulted in a severe water shortage, forcing about 300 households across three villages in the Mueang district to buy water. The crisis is due to the drying up of groundwater sources, which the villages have traditionally relied on, as they don’t have access to local water pipelines.

The villages of old and new Ban Nong Makhuea, and Ban Nong Hua Ling, despite being near the Huai Jorakhe Mak reservoir, which serves the Mueang district, have no direct access to its water. EEC prepares for water shortages

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

There are 41 industrial estates housing 6,000 factories in the EEC, which covers parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao. Their demand for water stands at 1.5 million cubic meters a day. Continued …

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day.
