Water bills to go online, still in testing

The Hua Hin Municipal Waterworks is launching a new water bill payment system. The new online system, which is currently in its testing phase, aims to streamline operations and improve the overall customer experience.

Meanwhile, customers are able to pay their water bills directly at the Waterworks Office or through the Waterworks’ official Line account (@904vnffi). Continued …

Groups move ahead in replacing overhead wiring

Four major organizations – the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration – have joined forces to replace overhead cables with underground ones along 116 routes. This substantial project, spanning across both Bangkok and other provinces, will cover a total distance of 213 kilometers.

Originally slated for last year, this project is part of a larger plan. This includes the rearrangement of overhead cables across 1,407 routes in Bangkok and the provinces, covering a combined length of 2,498 kilometers. Continued …

Scientists spooked by ghost shark sighting off Thailand coast

Scientists have been spooked by the ghoulish discovery of a ghost shark swimming off the Andaman coast of Thailand. Researchers revealed the ghost shark is a new species named Chimaera supapae. It boasts a formidable head, oversized eyes, and delicate, feather-like fins.

Chimaeras, commonly known as ghost sharks, belong to the family of cartilaginous fish, sharing kinship with sharks and rays. Live Science highlighted that these cartilaginous fish represent some of the oldest species still extant today. Continued …

Big problems, and big tax income, from legalized casinos

Thailand could receive an income of 50 billion to 100 billion baht per year were casinos legaliszed, money that could be put toward taxes and national development, according to Thanawat Phonwichai, president of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

However, legalizing casinos often comes with a cost, he said, such as drug addiction and gambling, and the rise of transnational crimes. Thanawat also warned that casinos should not be built in densely populated areas. Continued …

Inflation slowing, seen at 1% this year

Thailand’s inflation is slowing and is expected to be at 1% this year, the Finance Ministry said today, bottom of the 1% to 3% range.

High interest rates were affecting the public, while purchasing power was weak, Pornchai Thiraveja, head of the ministry’s Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), told a briefing, adding that five projects were be prepared to help with credit for the low income group. Continued …

Businesses are likely to find it difficult to get through the second half of this year, as people’s purchasing power remains weak amid a high level of household debt, says the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai).

MR DIY continues to expand in Thailand despite the hike in the daily minimum wage. The increase in the minimum wage could pose a slight impact to the company as costs rise, but it will benefit the economy, said Andy Chin, chief executive of MR DIY Thailand.

Australia opens door to agricultural workers from Thailand

According to Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which is in charge of the visa subclass 403, workers from four countries – Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines – can apply for the visa and get an opportunity to stay in Australia to work for up to four years.

The Australian government has just announced the approval of the agriculture visa subclass 403, which allows workers in a range of agriculture sectors and skill levels from certain Southeast Asia countries, including Vietnam, to work in Australia. Continued …

One of the goals of the UK-Thai Strategic Partnership agreement signed with UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron on Wednesday is to allow Thai passport holders visa-free access to the United Kingdom on short-term visits for tourism or business.

Canadian Tourist Dies After Falling Off Moving Train

A young Canadian man died Wednesday night after falling off a fast train running from Bangkok to Chumphon after going out of the carriage to smoke a cigarette as it was moving up and down during the journey.

At approximately 10.30 p.m., Ban Pong police station in Ratchaburi province was notified that a foreign man, later identified as Ralph Ryan Joseph, 26, from Canada, had disappeared after stepping out of the carriage of fast train number 168 to smoke near Ban Kluay Temple, Tha Rap subdistrict, Mueang district. What’s with the water bills?

For many in Hua Hin, the home delivery and payment of water bills is over. This week, water bill delivery drivers alerted customers that they needed to head on down to the Water Department office to pay.

Normally, that’s not a big deal, as there are usually only a few people there paying their bills. But with the change came long lines at the Water Department, meaning waits for as long as an hour.

This change does not seem like a budgetary one, as the bills still have to be delivered. And it certainly is not a customer-friendly move. So, what’s going on?

Here’s a clue. We remember last year a news mention that 7-Eleven stores were being asked to take on the bill-collecting task, as they currently do with electric bills. We never heard another word about the convenient option, but our guess is the “pay the bill at the office” mandate will be a short one. – Hua Hin Expat News

House to deliberate bill legalizing casinos on March 28

The House is scheduled to deliberate a bill to legalize casino complexes on March 28, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Tuesday. If the House approves the bill, he will immediately submit it to the Cabinet for approval.

Julapun heads a special House committee in charge of studying the legalization of entertainment complexes with casinos as a way to tackle illegal gambling and to boost the economy. The Rural Doctor Society (RDS) says the Public Health Ministry’s data was breached again and this time, 2.2 million citizen records were stolen and put up for sale on the “dark web”.

The RDS backed its allegation on Tuesday with screen captures of the breachforum.cx website, showing a “god user” advertising the sale of 2.2 million records of Thai citizens for US$10,000 (about 360,000 baht). Continued …

Health ministry denies data leak involving 2.2M patients

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew gave his assurance on Tuesday that patient data stored in the ministry’s system is safe and secure following a rumor that the personal information of over 2.2 million Thai people had been leaked.

Almost 30 police officers may be involved in a bribery case tied to an illegally operated online gambling network, according to a team of lawyers representing deputy national police chief Surachate Hakparn.

New Finance Minister expected in April as economic malaise deepens

A new minister of finance may be appointed in April. It comes as the Pheu Thai-led government comes to terms with economic realities. This includes the growing problem of ballooning private sector debt and structural impediments to growth.

At the same time, most analysts agree that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who currently handles the role, has spooked markets with his overt criticism in recent months of the country’s central bank. The potential appointment of a new finance minister has seen the name of Pichai Chunhavajira emerge. UTCC slashes Thailand 2024 growth forecast from 3.2% to 2.6%

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) on Tuesday slashed its 2024 economic growth forecast for Thailand from 3.2% to 2.6%.

The big cut by the university’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting was mainly due to the global economic slowdown, explained UTCC rector Thanawat Phonwichai. Smog crisis in north refuses to diminish

Rocky start for Thailand’s latest alcohol tax reform

Thailand has decided to cut its prohibitive alcohol taxes. The tax changes were announced earlier this year, and took effect from March 1. The cabinet proposed an alcohol tax slash at three levels.

First, the import duties of 54% will be reduced to 0%. Second, the excise tax will drop from 10% to 5%. Another excise tax, which applies to the volume and percentage of alcohol and calculated at 1,500 baht (£32.84) per liter for every 100 degrees of alcohol content, will now come down to 1,000 baht. Chiang Mai is top of the world’s 10 cities with the highest levels of air pollution, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings today.

According to the IQAir website, the AQI reading in Chiang Mai is 200, followed by Tashkent in Uzbekistan at 193, 154 in Lahore in Pakistan, 160 in Beijing, 157 in Wuhan, 155 in Yangon, 154 in New Delhi, 154 in Dubai, 153 in Hang Zhou and 151 in Calcutta. Continued …

Mo Chit 2 taxi drivers seek fare increase

Thousands more chemicals in plastic than previously thought

At least 3,000 more chemicals are present in plastics — from food packaging to children’s toys to medical devices — than previously estimated by international environment agencies, a report published on Thursday found.

Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

Thailand ranks as third country most exposed to climate change economic losses

While flood risk is projected to intensify globally, the main driver of major weather-related economic losses in Southeast Asia, are tropical cyclones, according to data from the Swiss Re Institute.

These are just the lower bound of potential economic losses, as the study does not cover all weather perils (e.g., heatwaves) and account for property losses only. And, as changing climates fuel weather-event intensity, loss potential will likely rise. These are the top 10 countries most exposed to four weather perils:

Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …

Thailand could curb climate change impact with forest expansion

The severe consequences of climate change could potentially be curbed in Thailand by the expansion of forest coverage on unused lands, asserted a water expert. Royon Jitdon, who provides advice to the Hydro-Informatics Institute under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, expressed confidence in the climate change mitigation capabilities of forest plantations, particularly in terms of reducing drought impacts in agricultural regions.

Thailand’s forest zones span over 102 million rai, equivalent to 31% of the country’s total land area, according to Royon.
