Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

What to do in Hua Hin, Thailand’s easy-to-reach city by the sea

Thailand unveils 13-point plan to tackle cancer

The Department of Medical Services (DMS) has unveiled its 13 Quick Win strategy, led by the director-general’s representative, Amporn Benjaphonpitak. This public health strategy is designed to tackle liver and bile duct cancer diagnoses, establish mini-rehabilitation centers in every province, set up four health zones, and enhance services in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district and Chiang Mai’s Mueang district.

19 More Thais Returning From Israel Today

The escalating conflict in the Middle East could drive global gold prices to US$1,875 (67,950 baht) per ounce, as predicted by the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA).

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. A woman has been charged with violating the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act after two wild elephants were electrocuted by a live wire stretched around her durian plantation to protect her fruit trees.

Government to trial 4 am closing for Thailand’s nightlife venues

The Thai government is working to identify pilot locations for a trial of late-night closing for the country’s nightlife. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says his office is liaising with related parties to find locations where entertainment venues would be allowed to remain open until 4 am.

Ministry allots Bt600 million for tourism promotions

New Mediterranean restaurant opens in Hua Hin

Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. The menu includes vegetarian options to meat, fish, and seafood delicacies, as well as pasta and paella. Gregal currently is operating under soft opening hours from 12 pm to 6 pm, except Tuesday. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The projects are relatively recent, and the quality of the wine produced is rather low, with a high price. Scattered thunderstorms, some of them heavy, are forecast for the northern, central, eastern, and southern (east coast) regions today, while Bangkok and its vicinity have an 80% chance of rain.

This weather pattern is due to a low-pressure system moving across the lower central region, eastern region, and upper southern region converging with a moderate high-pressure area over China. Electric prices lowered, but how long can subsidies last?

The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. Gas makes up around 60% of the fuel used for power generation in Thailand.

To tame aggressive electricity prices, the Srettha Thavisin cabinet resolved last month to reduce the power tariff to 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), from 4.45 baht, but this increases the financial burden on EGAT, which needs part of the power tariff to help it settle a huge loss. Continued …

Chinese Tourist Arrivals Plunged Nearly 30% Week Over Week

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports said yesterday the number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand dropped week over week (Oct. 2-8, 2023 over Sept. 25-Oct. 1, 2023), especially those from China, with their total plunging by 29.5%.

Hua Hin municipality outlines plans for future development

Hua Hin municipality commemorated its 86th anniversary with a merit-making ceremony on Monday. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul led the ceremony, which was overseen by Phra Kru Wichitthamvibhat, the chief of Hua Hin District and the abbot of Wat Busayabunpot.

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

13 Electric Poles Collapse During Installation, 12 Injuries, 2 Deaths

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of “stagflation in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand.

The Ministry of Commerce is considering using its extensive network of retail outlets, shops and eateries, under the “Blue Flag” (Thong Fah) program, to allow people, who may have difficulty finding shops under the digital wallet 4km radius rule, to spend the 10,000-baht benefit under the scheme.

Gold prices in Thailand saw a significant surge as per the Gold Traders Assn. Compared to the closing price of the previous day, gold ornaments Tuesday were sold at an increased rate of 33,100 baht (US$926) per baht weight, marking an upswing of 100 baht.

The details of the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme would be proposed for Cabinet approval within the next 10 days, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday.

Thailand to tax all income from abroad starting 2024

Thailand’s revenue departments has released new guidelines that will see all income from abroad taxed as personal income tax regardless of whether it was earned income or savings.

According to the document, “…those that have earnings from occupation or business abroad or wealth that is located abroad…and has brought these assets into Thailand…must factor this into their personal income tax for the year.”

It is unclear at this point how this will apply to foreigners living in Thailand on a retirement visa. Continued …

Mrigadayavan Palace 3-day reopening Oct 13-15

The historic Mrigadayavan Palace in Cha Am will temporarily reopen to the public for three days Oct. 13-15. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024

The Navy yesterday confirmed it is going ahead with its project to retrieve a sunken corvette from the Gulf of Thailand sea floor, while categorically dismissing allegations of non-transparency over it.

Navy spokesman Adm. Pokkhrong Monthatpalin said the Navy Fleet based at Sattahip will certainly have the sunken HTMS 442 Sukhothai retrieved by a private firm from the bottom of the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan, though six bidders had earlier failed to meet specifications under the 200-million-baht project’s terms of reference. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin set up a committee on Tuesday to oversee the implementation of his government’s much-publicized 10,000 baht digital wallet scheme. Thai hotel bookings surge thanks to government agencies

Hotels have started to record an uptick in bookings from government agencies that have to use their fiscal 2023 budget before the deadline at the end of September, though reservations for China’s national holiday in October remain weak.

To tackle climate change by helping state agencies and private businesses reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) has launched the Thai Climate Initiative Fund, or the Thai CI Fund, to provide much-needed financial support.

The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) has downgraded its export forecast for this year to a contraction of 1% from its previous forecast, which ranged from a contraction of 0.5% to a 1% increase, citing weak global demand.
