Hua Hin police have arrested a suspect in connection with a series of thefts targeting air conditioner compressors in villas across the Hin Lek Fai and Nong Kae subdistricts.

Between June 2 and June 4, several residents filed complaints at the Hua Hin Police Station, reporting that copper pipes connected to air compressors had been stolen from their properties. The thief, who targeted homes owned by foreigners or out-of-town residents, left behind plastic covers while taking the compressors. A forest ranger was killed by a wild elephant in Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary in Sanam Chai Khet district of Chachoengsao on Wednesday, bring deaths in elephant attacks this year to 21. At Youyi Port, a land border port with Vietnam in Pingxiang, China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, China imported 48,000 tons of fresh durians in the first quarter of this year. Baht likely to face near-term volatility

The baht is likely to be volatile in the near term, pending clear signs from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) concerning interest rate cuts, with the Thai currency expected to slide to 37.25 baht to the dollar within 1-3 months, bouncing back to 36 to the greenback by year end, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

The baht edged down in line with other regional currencies to 36.8 to the dollar Monday morning, compared to Friday’s close of 36.72, as the greenback rebounded slightly ahead of the release in the U.S. of April’s consumer price index and producer price index later in the week, said Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of the research, banking and financial sector at the think tank. Growing drug problem grips Phuket as arrests increase by 6.21%

Phuket, an island mainly known for its tourism, is grappling with an escalating drug problem, according to the Phuket Provincial Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Center committee. The drug issue has seen a 6.21% increase between October last year and March this year, with 1,335 arrests made in 78 drug-related cases, excluding kratom and marijuana.

Thai consumer price index rises 0.19%

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.19% in April from a year earlier, versus a 0.47% year-on-year drop the previous month, the Commerce Ministry said on Friday.

Thailand is grappling with a significant drop in water levels in the Lam Takhong Reservoir and Lam Mun River, possibly leading to water shortages. With the reservoir containing just 35.4% of its capacity, water scarcity is becoming a stark reality due to drought and high heat.

The ongoing drought in Thailand’s Buriram province has resulted in a severe water shortage, forcing about 300 households across three villages in the Mueang district to buy water. The crisis is due to the drying up of groundwater sources, which the villages have traditionally relied on, as they don’t have access to local water pipelines.

The villages of old and new Ban Nong Makhuea, and Ban Nong Hua Ling, despite being near the Huai Jorakhe Mak reservoir, which serves the Mueang district, have no direct access to its water. EEC prepares for water shortages

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

There are 41 industrial estates housing 6,000 factories in the EEC, which covers parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao. Their demand for water stands at 1.5 million cubic meters a day. Continued …

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Dr. Thira Woratanarat said figures from the past week from April 21 to 27 showed that 1,672 Covid patients were admitted to hospitals and nine died. He said 390 of the patients suffered from severe lung infections and 148 others had to be put on ventilators. Continued …

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day. Thailand was one of the top three countries in the Asia-Pacific region to suffer a significant surge in financial fraud scams last year, according to Google’s 2023 Bad Apps Report.
