Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Thailand is set to experience heavy rainfall despite hot daytime temperatures, with 33 provinces expected to face severe weather conditions, including heavy rain. The Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts increased rain from today, Aug. 10 to 12, especially in four regions.

Tourists rescued from flooded cave, guide drowned

A tour guide drowned when a flash flood swept into Nam Talu cave in Khao Sok National Park as a group of tourists was leaving it on Tuesday evening. The 22 foreign tourists and a second guide had a lucky escape from the torrent, and without serious injury.

Expats angry at huge concessions in latest Thai visa announcements

Longstay expats with expensive visas say the new 60-days visa-exempt policy and the 180-days Destination Thailand Visa have made the Elite visa and the annual extensions of stay for retirement and marriage worthless. Geoffrey Fisher, a Brit who recently paid 900,000 baht (about 20,000 UK pounds) for the five-year Elite visa said he had wasted his money, as more or less anyone can now stay in Thailand almost indefinitely for a paltry sum.

The disenchanted argue that the 60-days visa-exempt can evidently be extended at local immigration for 30 days more, followed by a border run to start the whole process again. Some immigration officers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport have allegedly told new arrivals they can now do as many border runs as they like. Continued … 

Reminder: No alcohol sales this weekend

Thailand celebrates the start of Buddhist Lent, a three-day religous holiday, this weekend – meaning no alcohol sales for the duration. Today is Asahna Bucha Day, Sunday is Khao Phansa Day, and Monday is a second Asahna Bucha Day.

Alcohol sales are banned from Friday night at midnight until Monday night at midnight.

Asahna Bucha Day is the celebration in Thailand of the “Four Noble Truths” preached by Buddha in his first sermon after his enlightenment. These four noble truths are dukkha, tanha, nibbana, and the eight-fold path.

Khao Phansa Day is a Buddhist holiday observed in Thailand on the first day following the full moon occurring in the eighth month of the Thai lunar calendar. Khao Phansa marks the first day of “Buddhist Lent”, a time when observant Buddhists fast from such things as meat, alcohol, and tobacco. For the most part, only Theravada, rather than Mahayana, Buddhists observe Khao Phansa, and even many Theravada practitioners choose not to fast.

Hua Hin 94 Road Improvement Project Begins Monday

This week, Hua Hin municipal officials and staff, and representatives from Chok Kijcharoen Ltd., the contractor responsible for the project, inspected the site for the upcoming renovation of Hua Hin 94 Road. The project involves installing drainage pipes and resurfacing the road from the western railway intersection to Ban Chang Heng.

During the site visit, project officials announced that construction machinery would be deployed on Monday to begin the first phase of the project. This phase will cover the area from Hua Hin 94 Soi (in front of the 7-11) to the Amara Resort intersection. Continued …

The interior minister has now signed off on the latest immigration rules, which will permit citizens of 93 countries to obtain a visa-exempt 60 days on entering Thailand by land, air and sea. According to the statistics of Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports on international visitors during the first six months of 2024 (from Jan. 1 to June 30), Thailand welcomed 17,501,283 foreign visitors. It could generate from their expenditure of approximately 825 billion baht (US$22.5 billion).

The top nationals traveling to Thailand were from China, Malaysia, India, South Korea, and Russia, respectively. The final week of June alone, when the Pride Month 2024 events were held in various areas of the country, attracted 659,830 foreign tourists, an increase from the previous week, with only 19,083 persons. A dramatic rescue unfolded between Koh Larn and Pattaya City after the passenger boat Tara Jade experienced a sewage pump failure, causing it to take on water. The boat was carrying 12 Thai passengers — five men and seven women — when the incident occurred.

Laos shopkeepers not accepting Thai baht

Attracting a lot of attention in Thailand is Laos’ #SaveLaoKip campaign to protect their currency, with Laotian shopkeepers no longer accepting both Thai baht and other foreign currencies but, if necessary, they will give the foreigners a lower rate than that officially set.

Many shops in Laos have kicked off this campaign to only trade in their currency kip and not accept Thai baht. An example is one shop announcing that they will not accept any foreign currencies, with those coming in with Thai currency only getting 30,000 kip for 100 baht. Doubts cast on central bank’s GDP forecasts

Consumer confidence slips again in June

Thai consumer confidence dropped for a fourth straight month in June, falling to its lowest level since October last year on concerns over a global slowdown and political uncertainty, according to a survey carried out by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

Cash handouts: Boon or bane for Thailand’s long-term growth?

Golfing in Hua Hin

Few golf course deals can equal the one hatched on the Royal Hua Hin course in 1932. In the middle of a game, Siam’s King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) learned that a powerful alliance of bureaucrats and soldiers in Bangkok were demanding he replace his country’s 700-year old absolute monarchy with a constitutional one. The king reportedly said to his golfing partners “I told you so” and played on. And thus began Siam- Thailand’s sometimes-rocky journey toward democracy.

Golf is still the hottest game in town, with Hua Hin regularly hosting major local and Asian tournaments. Police seized fake animal medication worth more than 84 million baht from two major gang networks during raids in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon provinces.

Black panthers filmed at Kaeng Krachan National Park

Two black panthers were spotted by tourists at Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, calmly walking along the road to Panoen Thung without showing signs of fear toward vehicles. Mongkol Chaiphakdee, head of Kaeng Krachan National Park, confirmed that a tourist named Amy captured the rare sighting near Kilometer 20 on the way to Panoen Thung.

Amy managed to photograph two black panthers strolling in the area. The big cats did not display any panic or distress at the sight of cars before they eventually retreated into the forest. Five police officers have been transferred to inactive posts in connection with the disappearance of three boats with 330,000 liters of smuggled oil and 18 crewmen from a marine police pier in Chon Buri.

Thailand has issued a draft regulation to reclassify cannabis as narcotics from next year, as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government seeks to clamp down on rampant recreational use of marijuana.

Even though tech spending in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) is expected to grow by 6%-7% from 2024 to 2027, the spending in six major Southeast Asian economies is expected to grow by only 1% this year, according to a report by research and advisory company Forrester.
