Thailand faces heavy to very heavy rainfall from today to July 18, which may cause flash floods and forest runoff, especially in Bangkok. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for the entire country.

Police shut down 224 Euro 2024 gambling sites

Police have shut down over 200 websites involved in Euro 2024 football-related gambling, with 2.4 billion baht in circulation, according to the police. New Bangkok-Vientiane rail service starts Friday with tickets from 281 baht

A test run for the new cross-border rail link between Bangkok and Vientiane took place yesterday, paving the way for the official passenger service set to start this Friday.

The interior minister has now signed off on the latest immigration rules, which will permit citizens of 93 countries to obtain a visa-exempt 60 days on entering Thailand by land, air and sea. 17.5 million foreign tourists visit Thailand in 6 months

According to the statistics of Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports on international visitors during the first six months of 2024 (from Jan. 1 to June 30), Thailand welcomed 17,501,283 foreign visitors. It could generate from their expenditure of approximately 825 billion baht (US$22.5 billion).

The top nationals traveling to Thailand were from China, Malaysia, India, South Korea, and Russia, respectively. The final week of June alone, when the Pride Month 2024 events were held in various areas of the country, attracted 659,830 foreign tourists, an increase from the previous week, with only 19,083 persons. A resort operator in Mae Hong Son province’s Pai district says operators of popular tubing activities have violated the rules by selling alcohol to Western tourists who got drunk day and night.

Government to allow sale of alcoholic beverages in tourist trains

The Transport Ministry has come up with a plan to allow sales of alcoholic beverages in trains in a bid to stimulate tourism, starting with tourist trains. Sale of alcoholic beverages had been barred at train stations and in passenger cars since 2015.

Two Chinese tourists and a Thai were safely rescued after their boat driven by the Thai man capsized in a rainstorm and hit waves in Ao Nang bay in Muang district on Sunday morning.

Speedboat rescues 12 tourists from sinking boat near Pattaya

A dramatic rescue unfolded between Koh Larn and Pattaya City after the passenger boat Tara Jade experienced a sewage pump failure, causing it to take on water. The boat was carrying 12 Thai passengers — five men and seven women — when the incident occurred.

Speedboat operators quickly responded to the emergency, with Ed Chankrajai, the driver of the speedboat Yodtong, leading the rescue. As seawater poured into the stern of Tara Jade, Ed instructed everyone to put on life jackets. Laos shopkeepers not accepting Thai baht

Attracting a lot of attention in Thailand is Laos’ #SaveLaoKip campaign to protect their currency, with Laotian shopkeepers no longer accepting both Thai baht and other foreign currencies but, if necessary, they will give the foreigners a lower rate than that officially set.

Many shops in Laos have kicked off this campaign to only trade in their currency kip and not accept Thai baht. An example is one shop announcing that they will not accept any foreign currencies, with those coming in with Thai currency only getting 30,000 kip for 100 baht. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is upbeat that South Korean tourist arrivals this year will reach a record 1.94 million, higher than the pre-Covid 1.88 million.

Electric rate increase under consideration

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced a public consultation from yesterday until July 26 to discuss the final electricity tariff adjustment of the year. The proposed adjustments could see electricity bills rise from September to December this year, with costs potentially increasing from 4.18 baht per unit to between 4.65 and 6.01 baht per unit.

The secretary-general and spokesperson of the ERC, Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, revealed that the fuel tariff (FT) might need to be adjusted upwards by 46.8 to 182.9 satang per unit, combined with the base electricity rate of 3.7 baht per unit. This adjustment would result in the electricity tariff for the end of 2024 increasing to between 4.65 and 6.01 baht per unit. Continued …

Heavy rains forecast for most of Thailand from Sunday to Thursday

Thundershowers and isolated heavy rains are likely in some areas of Thailand on Saturday due to the moderate southwest monsoon prevailing over the country, the Thai Meteorological Department said.

He was arrested while getting into a luxury white BMW and charged with “being an alien in the country without permission.”

On Thursday, the officers received information that the gang leader of a call center gang, fleeing prosecution in Malaysia after raiding a fellow countryman’s place to collect money, was eventually arrested by Malaysian authorities. Baht appreciation pressured by significant challenges

The Thai economy’s lower potential growth, a weaker current account surplus and increased capital outflows are pressuring baht appreciation over the longer term, say economists.

Roong Sanguanruang, senior vice president for global markets planning at Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), said the baht faces higher limitations in terms of appreciating against the dollar because of the economy’s reduced growth potential. Jaturon Phakdeewanit, director-general of the department, said the number of suspected illegal tour companies might be relatively small compared with 13,000 licensed firms nationwide, but their operations could inflict huge damage on Thai tourism, with most of the income flowing overseas instead of benefiting local businesses. Baht tipped to rise to 36.1 to the greenback

The baht could appreciate further to 36.1 to the U.S. dollar in the short term following recent gains to a one-month high on Monday, as weaker than expected U.S. economic data prompted the market to anticipate the Federal Reserve may start trimming U.S. interest rates in September.

The Royal Elephant Kraal Village in Ayutthaya’s Suan Prik subdistrict on Sunday hosted a merit-making ceremony to celebrate the world’s first twin elephants of different sexes reaching the age of one month. A 36-year-old elephant named Pang Jamjuree gave birth to male and female calves on the night of June 7. The male calf weighs in at 104.9kg and the female at 62.15kg. Recriminalization of hemp, pot would wipe out Thai cannabis market worth billions

More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.

The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. Madagascar lemurs, tortoises seized in Thai bust reveal reach of wildlife trafficking

In May, authorities in southern Thailand arrested six people for illegally transporting 48 lemurs and more than 1,200 critically endangered tortoises, all of which had reportedly been obtained from the wild in Madagascar.

The seizure is the latest in a string of illegal wildlife trade busts in Thailand. Red pandas, monitor lizards, snakes and parrots have been uncovered in similar incidents in the country in recent months, for instance. Thai fruit the sweet spot for exports, May sales soar 128% over April

Thailand’s fruit exports in May soared 128% month on month to US$1.4 billion, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) reported on Friday, predicting that the trend would continue for several months.

Total exports in May were valued at $26.21 billion, increasing 7.2% over the previous month and was the highest in 14 months, with main contributions coming from agricultural products, TPSO Director-general Poonpong Naiyanapakorn said. Continued … 

Thai canned tuna is the world leader with export volumes surging by 19%

Thailand exported 221,092 tons of canned tuna during the first five months of 2024, an increase of 19.4% compared to the same period last year. The exports were valued at $978.56 million, a growth of 13.4%.

Cooking gas subsidies extended to Sept 30

The price of cooking gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), will remain fixed at 423 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until Sept. 30 as energy officials have agreed to extend subsidies from the Oil Fuel Fund.

The current LPG subsidy is scheduled to end on Sunday, prompting the Energy Policy Administration Committee (Epac) to meet on Thursday to review the impact of higher cooking gas prices on the cost of living, said Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, who chaired the meeting. Continued …

Analysts see continued baht decline this year

Thai Banks Are the Top Suppliers of Financial Services to Myanmar’s Military: UN Expert

Thai banks have become the main supplier of international financial services for Myanmar’s military government, enabling its purchases of goods and equipment used to carry out its increasingly bloody war against pro-democracy resistance forces and armed ethnic minority groups, a UN expert said in a report issued Wednesday.

The report by Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, tracks how that country’s ruling military council has been able to continue procuring arms by shifting suppliers of financial services and military hardware as previous sources have been blocked by sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other states. Bank of Thailand sees economic stability from Q3

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) expects the economy to start stabilizing from the third quarter thanks to accelerated growth and potential to meet the 2.6% expansion target this year. Senior BOT executives voiced these optimistic views at the second Monetary Policy Forum for this year on Wednesday.

Re: New tax on foreigner income

“It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

“Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

“This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)

Lots of rain forecast for Hua Hin

The Thailand Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning, forecasting heavy rain for Hua Hin over the next week.

Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rainfall in some places such as Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung. Temperatures will range from 23-27°C at the minimum and 31-34°C at the maximum.

Covid-infected PM visits Hua Hin Airport

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin conducted another inspection of Hua Hin Airport on Sunday, providing an update on the redevelopment plans announced last month. The redevelopment includes a major expansion and renaming the airport to “Phetch Hua Hin” airport.

The prime minister highlighted the progress, stating, “The Phetch-Hua Hin airport has made significant progress. We are moving towards becoming an aviation hub and tourism hub. Thai Baht Leads Decline as Asian Currencies Dip Amid Quiet Trade

Thailand arrests 26,000 undocumented workers, 20,111 from Myanmar

The Thai Labor Department announced that over 26,000 undocumented foreign workers from Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam were arrested within a week.

New highly-transmissible Covid strain will elude vaccines: expert

The KP.2 strain of Covid-19 will become dominant in Thailand, according to a renowned virologist. It will be more transmissible and vaccines will be hard-pressed to keep up with its mutations, but its symptoms will not be more severe than those of previous strains of the virus.

Economist warns of further industry closures

More businesses in the automobile, electrical appliances, and electronics industries are under threat of closure because they are not moving quickly enough to adapt to digital technology and global trends, an economic expert from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce said.

Headline inflation up 1.54%, above forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.54% in May from a year earlier, after the previous month’s annual rise of 0.19%, the Commerce Ministry said today.

Migrant workers take over house of Thai-Australian couple in Korat

A Thai woman and her Australian husband filed a police complaint after a group of migrant workers took over their house in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat.

The Thai woman, 66-year-old Somporn Rolland, told officers at Sikhio Police Station that she returned home from Australia in February to find the group of migrants living in her house and making numerous changes to the property. Continued …

20 in intensive care after turbulence scare

Fifty-eight of the passengers injured when Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 encountered severe turbulence en route from London to Singapore yesterday are still being treated in hospital, including 20 who are in intensive care units (ICU), according to a statement from Bangkok’s Samitivej Srinagarind Hospital.

Yesterday, 103 passengers were taken to Samitivej Srinagarind, Samitivej Sukhumvit and Bangkok hospitals and the Samitivej Suvarnabhumi Clinic, 27 of whom have already been discharged. Continued …

Bail sought for political prisoners under lese majeste law

Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) is working to secure bail for 19 political prisoners, predominantly those charged under Section 112, commonly known as the lese majeste law, to uphold their human rights.

TLHR announced yesterday that the number of political prisoners, especially those detained under Section 112 of the Criminal Code, has surged since last year. Many of these individuals have been denied the right to apply for bail while awaiting trial. Continued …

Baht fundamentals have deteriorated

Uncertainty surrounding the U.S. interest rate trajectory, alongside geopolitical tensions, underpin much of the baht’s weakness so far this year, according to BMI officials. “We think the baht will trade sideways and reach 37.50 to. the U.S. dollar by year-end once these temporary factors subside,” they predict.

“We are, however, less optimistic about the baht’s long-term outlook, especially as the key fundamentals that originally supported the currency have deteriorated.” Continued …

Govt urged to consider regulations, support for influencers

With the ever-growing popularity of social media and e-commerce drawing more and more people to become influencers, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has urged the government to regulate and provide the necessary support to those adopting this emerging career with a potentially high economic value.

According to statistics from Niesen, the ASEAN region had some 13.5 million influencers in 2023, while global revenue through advertising and other channels generated by influencers was about $19 billion. Group seeks gain from US-China trade war

The U.S. recently imposed very high tariffs on Chinese products, notably electric vehicles and semiconductors, which will cause China to concentrate on expanding its EV manufacturing within Asia, with Thailand poised to become a key export hub, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

President Joe Biden’s administration cited Beijing’s unfair trade practices for the hike, with EV tariffs to be quadrupled to a 100% rate, solar cells and semiconductors doubled to a 50% rate, and certain steel and aluminum imports from China raised to 25%, more than triple the current level, according to media reports.
