Sunee Hill: Forging her own path

When I first met Sunee Hill, a petite, feisty, white-haired Thai nonagenarian, she fixed me with her steely eyes and told me, point-blank, that I could write her story. This is the remarkable story of her life journey and her art, which has helped her explore her Chinese heritage.

Sunee was born and raised in Bangkok, the second child of nine to Chinese immigrant parents. Her father was a merchant who supplied materials to the construction industry. Because Thai authorities at the time had difficulty recording the details of her name and existence in Chinese language, she was not officially registered until quite some time later, so has a passport recording her birth as having happened in 1940, when it was indeed in 1932. Funeral attendees win cows, receive rice gifts in unique 200,000 baht Thai almsgiving

In Buriram province, a funeral for 92-year-old Wun Chongchaingam has drawn a large crowd due to the unusual almsgiving of 1.5 tons of rice and a raffle for five cows, worth a total of 200,000 baht (US$ 5,758), for needy villagers and attendees. The event took place at Wat Pa Non-Somboon temple.

Many villagers attended the funeral to pay respects and participate in merit-making for the deceased woman, as well as to try their luck at winning one of the five cows. In addition to the cow lottery, which was held in front of the guests, over 700 bags of rice, each containing approximately two kilograms, were prepared as gifts for attendees. Continued …

Myanmar Junta Launches Airstrikes Near Thai Border As Clashes Escalate

Fighting between Myanmar junta forces and Karenni armed groups just across the border from Mae Hong Son intensified yesterday, with the former launching 13 airstrikes against the latter.

Thai security forces said that Myanmar junta’s 430th Rapid Mobility Battalion continued to clash heavily with Karenni Army (KA), Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) and People’s Defense Force (PDF), the loosely organized armed wing of the pro-democracy National Unity Government, around eight to 10 kilometers from Mae Ngao subdistrict, Khun Yuam district, Mae Hong Son province. Thai economy to enjoy positive growth, economists say

The Thai economy is still growing despite the risk of a global economic recession, economists said during the recent “Investment Forum: New Chapter, New Opportunity” seminar organized by Krungthep Turakij.

Somprawin Manprasert, head of Siam Commercial Bank’s Economic Intelligence Center, said that while the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) did not hike interest rates at its meeting last week, as it wanted to send a signal that such hikes need not be constant, it was anticipated that there would be two further increases from the current rate of 5.25% this year, mainly to mitigate the impacts of rising fuel costs. Further interest hikes likely

Thailand is likely to see higher interest rates in the second half of 2023 following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s indication of two further interest rate hikes this year and a signal from the Bank of Thailand that it, too, might raise interest.

According to Roong Sanguanruang of Krungsri Bank, it was earlier expected that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) might pause interest rate hikes at 2%. Continued …

Household debt in Thailand soars to 86.9% of GDP, dampening consumer spending

Thailand’s mounting household debt is raising concerns, as it continues to hinder consumer spending, affecting various industries and impeding economic growth. The latest data from the National Economic and Social Development Council shows debt in the nation reached 15.1 trillion baht in the fourth quarter of 2022, a 3.5% increase year on year, and accounting for 86.9% of GDP.

UK crime boss living in Hua Hin finally jailed after five years on the run

A British crime boss who only has one leg has been jailed after he was finally extradited from Thailand after five years on the run. Richard Wakeling, originally from Essex, was tried and found guilty of trying to import £8 million worth of liquid amphetamine into the UK in 2016.

He’d been living in the seaside town of Hua Hin, and was in possession of a passport with a different identity when he was caught by the Thai police in Bangkok. Continued …

Financial institutions in Thailand have begun mandating facial recognition for customers conducting high-value transactions. The move, aimed at reducing fraudulent activities and scams, is expected to provide extra security for clients.

UNESCO has recognized five creative cities in Thailand, for gastronomy, crafts, folk arts and design, according to Anucha Burapachaisri, spokesman for the government.

Phuket was first granted the UNESCO creative city of gastronomy status in 2015, for its traditional food varieties,which have been passed down from one generation to another. Phuket reports rapid kickoff for tourism but a lapse on the way

Phuket experienced a significant influx of international tourists in the first five months of 2023, with over 6 million arrivals. Although the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket office describes them as “tourists”, the number includes all foreign arrivals for whatever reason.

Among them, Russians constituted the largest number of arrivals, followed by Chinese, Indians, Australians and Kazakhs. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, the director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket office says that the arrival of these tourists injected at least 196 billion baht into the local economy during this period. ‘I found paradise, and within 14 years it was destroyed’

The self-proclaimed “first tourist” to have visited Koh Phangan in Thailand has spoken of his guilt after sharing details of the pristine island, which led to its eventual ruin and notoriety as a trash-strewn party spot.

The other side of paradise

An hour’s drive from Phuket’s Pa Tong Beach, Bang Rong seems to be an ocean apart from its western counterpart. Located on the east coast, it doesn’t have a white sandy beach. Luxury beach clubs, Sunday brunch with free-flow sparkling wine and a pampering spa are most definitely not on its menu.

“Bang Rong has long served as a pier to Koh Yao and islands further out in Phang Nga Bay. This place, however, has never been a destination in its own right,” says local guide Prasert. “Those who came here earlier were either on their way to other places or looking for mangrove charcoal.” Continued …

Thai border town of Sangkhlaburi has mix of country’s ethnic groups, food, culture and religions

The bus drops me next to a stall at which a young man is placing pieces of red and white betel nut on green leaves smeared with a white paste. Once the masala has been sprinkled, the leaves are folded and taped up in plastic. The men waiting in the long queue for their snack are dressed in checked Burmese longyis.

Electricity price to drop sharply from September

The Energy Ministry expects to cut the fuel tariff (Ft) in September, leading to a significant drop in the price of electricity.

Consumers can expect a reduction of 40-50 satang per unit for the September-December electricity billing cycle, Energy Ministry Permanent Secretary Kulit Sombatsiri said on Wednesday. The Ft rate currently stands at 4.70 baht per unit. The planned reduction was made possible by the easing of global prices of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), he explained. Continued …

Thailand’s hot season approaches its conclusion as the rainy season is set to begin in mid-May, according to the country’s Meteorological Department. The hot season peaked on April 15, when the temperature reached a record high of 44.6°C in Tak.

Deputy Director-general Thanasit Iam-ananchai has stated that throughout the weekend daily heat indices or apparent temperatures are anticipated to surge to precarious levels in specific regions, such as Bang Na district in Bangkok, Sattahip district in Chon Buri, and Phuket. Weatherman says current hot weather in Thailand does not qualify as a heat wave

The hot weather, currently affecting many parts of Thailand, is being caused by persistent low pressure cell, according to Somkuan Tonjan, head of the Central Weather Forecast subdivision of the Thai Meteorological Department.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that 59 provinces in the North, Northeast, Central and East will be hit by summer storms from Sunday to Wednesday.

Thailand’s industrial confidence index for March highest in a decade

Thailand’s Industrial Sentiment Index (TISI) was at its highest for a decade in March, boosted by a rebound in domestic demand, production increases and improved performance, with the exception of production costs, said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri on Sunday.

Q1 Foreign Investment Soars by 25%, $960 Million, Japan Top

Thosapone Dansuputra, director-general of the Business Development Department, in his capacity as the secretary of the Board of Investment of Foreign Business, revealed that in the first quarter of 2023 (January – March), a total of 174 foreign businesses were granted permission to invest in Thailand under the Foreign Business Act of 1999, with a total investment value of 33 billion baht (960 U.S. dollars).

Out of these, 56 businesses obtained investment licenses and 118 received a certificate of permission to operate their business. These businesses also created job opportunities for 1,932 Thai people. Continued …

How Thailand Minister Pushed Through Asia’s First Cannabis Legalization

Until last summer, Thailand had some of the world’s harshest drug laws, with possession of cannabis then punishable by up to 15 years in prison. But on June 9, marijuana was decriminalized and a resurgent cannabis culture has seen dispensaries popping up across the Southeast Asian nation of 70 million.

The move was the brainchild of Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s deputy prime minister and Health minister, whose Bhumjaithai Party is today the junior partner in a military-backed ruling coalition. Anutin’s pitch was that legalizing cannabis could reduce prison overcrowding — more than 80% of inmates in Thai prisons were incarcerated on drug-related charges — while spurring a hemp industry to alleviate rural poverty. Raja Ferry temporarily suspends Pha Ngan–Samui route

Raja Ferry Port Co. has suspended all ferry services between Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui in Surat Thani province in southern Thailand from Sunday–Wednesday (April 23-25).

A tour boat with 42 tourists from Phuket became stuck on a sandbank in Phang Nga. The boat was traveling from Phuket with 42 foreign tourists. They were traveling to the Hat Nopparat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi and Ao Phang Nga National Park. Boat crews and foreign tourists tried to push the boat off the bank for half an hour but failed. National Park staffers finally pushed the boat from the sandbank. Hua Hin-PKK double-track rail to open next year

The double-track railway between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan stations looks set to be opened next year, as most of the project’s civil engineering work has been completed, according to the State Railway of Thailand.

The tracks are currently undergoing testing to estimate travel times and ensure safe shunting, which has produced satisfactory results so far.

The 84-kilometer-long double-track railway is constructed parallel to the old, single track, which serves the main southern line. The new tracks will pass two bridges, 12 stations, one halt and two container yards, at Sam Roi Yot and Thung Mamao stations. – Bangkok Post

Officials warn of 100,000-baht fine for smoking on Hua Hin beach

Officials have brought their new campaign to discourage smoking to Hua Hin beach, in an effort to keep the area clean and protect public health.

On Thursday, officials visited the beach holding signs warning that anyone found smoking on the beach faces a hefty fine of up to 100,000 THB and/or 1 year in jail.

The “Smoke-free Beach” campaign is being led by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Region 3 (DMCR3), and aims to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking on the beach, both in terms of health and environmental impact. Continued …

Thai industry group uneasy over banking crisis

Domestic car and motorcycle sales may bear the brunt if Thai financial institutions are affected by the risk of failed banks in the U.S. and Europe, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The concern was raised after U.S. and European banking executives and regulators stepped in to save California-based Silicon Valley Bank, New York-based Signature Bank and 167-year-old Credit Suisse in Zurich, Switzerland, from potential crisis.

If the financial turbulence cannot be contained, the global financial system will be affected, which may eventually have a negative impact on Thai banks and non-banks that grant loans to car and motorcycle buyers, said Surapong Paisitpatanapong, vice chairman of the FTI and spokesman for its Automotive Industry Club. Prachinburi locals make 3 demands over radiation fears

Locals living around the recycling plant in Prachinburi where a stolen cylinder of Cesium-137 is believed to have been melted down have raised white flags in a plea for government action.

KResearch says global banking crisis will pressure Thai exports

Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) maintains Thailand’s 2023 GDP growth projection at 3.7 %. However, its Thai export growth forecast has been downgraded to -1.2 % from the previous -0.5 %.

Meanwhile, tourism will see a brighter outlook, with a clear recovery of foreign tourist arrivals expected in 1Q23.

America’s Globalstar will provide satellite services in Thailand

Low earth orbit satellite operator Globalstar of the U.S. has won approval from Thailand’s regulators to provide satellite services in the Kingdom in partnership with local satellite firm Thaicom, the company announced last week.

Aside from the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite services, Louisiana-based Globalstar will also be permitted to build and operate a ground tracking station at Thaicom’s Teleport Center in Pathum Thani province, north of Bangkok.

Bangkok halts Bt30-billion Chao Phraya riverfront project

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt announced that he would stop the “Chao Phraya walkway riverfront” project proposed by the Prayut Chan-o-cha government. He added that the project was not worth it and did not meet the needs of the people.

After the Thai Administrative Court ruled on March 22, 2023, to stop the construction of the Chao Phraya walkway, adding that the panel of defendants should adjust four points, Bangkok Deputy Gov. Wisanu Subsompon said the Bangkok municipality, which is one of the defendants, will accept the ruling and will not appeal.

SPCG expects solar panel revenue to reach Bt1 billion

Costly electricity bills are expected to cause more households and businesses to use renewable energy by installing rooftop solar panels, says SET-listed SPCG, a pioneer in solar farm development in Thailand.

The power tariff, which is used to calculate electricity bills for households, is likely to increase to 4.77 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) between May and August, up from the previous record high of 4.72 baht per unit, according to the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Businesses will also pay 4.77 baht per unit, down from 5.33 baht per unit, applicable from January to April this year. Continued …

Building businesses on the legalization of marijuana in Chiang Mai

Cannabis, also known as marijuana, has had a long history in Thailand. Traditionally, the plant was used by locals in their food and medicine.

But in 1935, using marijuana — whether as a drug or otherwise — was criminalized. And until last year, anyone using or possessing marijuana could face five years in prison, and a fine of up to 100,000 Thai baht, or $2,900.

Latest data from Airbnb reveals that as travel continues to recover post-pandemic, nights booked in Thailand on Airbnb more than doubled last year from 2020, with international travel leading the way and Bangkok emerging as a top destination of choice for global travelers on Airbnb.

The popular capital city emerged as the #1 trending destination globally for Airbnb guests in Q3 last year and #5 on Airbnb’s list of top trending global travel spots in 2023.

This comes as Thailand recently forecast that 25-30 million travelers will visit this year – a strong indication of tourism recovery in the country, and up from 11 million international visitors last year. Continued …

Tourist ‘damaged Thai tourism’ by reporting bungee mishap to foreign media

The Hong Kong tourist who went to the media in his homeland after a bungee cord broke in Pattaya has been accused of damaging Thai tourism.

The accident occurred on Feb. 24 but has only just come to light.

Adang Island in Satun Is Set to Be Developed as World-Class Tourism Destination

Ko Adang, or Adang Island, in the southern border province of Satun, is set to be developed as a world-class tourism destination, like Langkawi in Malaysia, according to the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC).

The SBPAC held a meeting recently to discuss ways to upgrade and develop tourism in Satun, which is famous for its pristine nature spreading over jungles, mountains, and beaches.

SBPAC Deputy Secretary-General Chanathan Saengphum stated that all relevant agencies would work together in pushing for the development of Adang Island into a major tourism destination in this part of the world within the next five years. Continued …

AOT Unveils Plan to Expand Don Mueang Airport Terminal for Tourism Boost

Following cabinet approval last year, Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) has unveiled its plans to expand Don Mueang International Airport’s low-cost terminal, aiming to increase passenger capacity and boost tourism income for the country.

According to AOT, a budget of 36.8 billion baht has been allocated for the project, which is set to begin this year and be completed by 2029.

The expansion, which includes the construction of 12 aircraft parking stands and 11 jet bridges, will increase the airport’s handling capacity from 30 million to 40 million passengers per year. Continued …

U-tapao expansion likely delayed

U-tapao airport expects a delay to the first phase of its expansion plans, as some conditions have not been approved by authorities, with the carrying capacity reduced to less than 12 million passengers in the initial stages, says U-Tapao International Aviation Co. (UTA).

Anawat Leelawatwatana, senior vice president for finance and accounting at Bangkok Airways and a representative for UTA, said the date for area delivery of construction was supposed to be January 2023, but three major criterion upon issuance of the notice to proceed letter have not been finalized by the government. Khao Tao railway crossing closed today, tomorrow

The railway crossing at Soi Hua Hin 101 in Khao Tao will be closed today and tomorrow between 9am and 3pm. Motorists are advised to use Soi Hua Hin 105 and the entrance to Thanarat Camp as an alternate route.

12-vehicle pileup on Phetchkasem Highway blocks traffic

A multiple collision occurred on Phetchkasem Highway heading south in Muang district of Prachuap Khirikhan province at 1.30 pm yesterday.

It happened in Bon Ek subdistrict at kilometer marker 291 +300. The road south was completely blocked and an emergency lane needed to be opened on the inbound to Bangkok side to move traffic.

Aussie Chamber names new executive director

Sam Hanna has been named the new executive director of AustCham Thailand. Hanna commenced his career in Australia and worked in manufacturing, automotive and franchising roles, such as managing director for Ultra Tune (Based in Australia).

In 1999, he moved to Thailand and since then has been leading organizations in the automotive, manufacturing, and tourism sectors. Some of his roles in Thailand include managing director of Makro Auto Care Co., CEO of Shell AutoServe, and general manager of ARB Thailand.

Hanna is currently deputy executive director at the Asian Institute of Technology Extension, as well as lecturing at the School of Management. In addition, he owns a health and wellness business based in Bangkok.

Hanna will commence with the Chamber full time on Friday, March 17.

Thai banks unaffected by two recent US bank failures

Thailand’s commercial banks and other financial institutions have not been affected by the recent failures of the U.S.’s Silicon Valley Bank and New York-based Signature Bank in the past week, deputy government spokesperson Traisuree Traisoranakul said yesterday.

She disclosed that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has, however, ordered the government’s economic team to monitor the situation closely.

She said that no Thai commercial banks or financial institutions had invested or engaged in any transactions with the two failed U.S. banks, adding that the impact of the closures on the U.S. economy is limited, because the services of the two banks were limited, unlike ordinary commercial banks, and thanks to swift intervention by the U.S. regulators. Baht surges amid US bank collapse

The baht on Monday surged against a significant fall in the U.S. dollar mainly due to the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and the market’s expectation that the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) would slow down its policy rate hikes.

On Monday, the baht opened at 34.65 per dollar, after closing at 35.02 last week.

Due to the fallout from SVB’s collapse, the market predicts that the Fed will increase its policy rate by lower than 50 basis points this month, and the terminal rate is expected to be no higher than 5.5% around the middle of the year. Continued …

New Bangkok running park links 3 green lungs in city center

Bangkok opened its newest park on Monday, aiming to serve as an exercise space for over 800,000 people in the city’s central business district.

The catchily named National Sports Development Fund-Sports Authority of Thailand (NSDF-SAT) Park links three city parks – Benchakitti, Benchakitti Forest and Lumphini – to provide a green jogging and exercise route through the city center.

The park/route uses 5 rai (0.8 hectares) of the three parks, plus the so-called “green mile” elevated walkway that links Benchakitti and Lumphini parks. Continued …

Wild elephants threaten farms

Phimphitcha Soonjirad, a 40-year-old teacher from Sai Yok Noi Vitthaya School in Mauen in tambon Chorsadao in Kanchanaburi’s Mueang district, on Friday night accompanied a group of local villagers on a patrol close to her village located inside Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary, which harbors around 270 wild elephants.

Her team’s work is just one of many initiatives tried by the locals in a bid to keep the herd from causing damage to the community.

She has spent over 20 years battling the wild jumbos that regularly destroy farmland and other assets. Continued …

The auto industry will see more turmoil in 2023. By 2025, tech giants will wwn a part of the vehicle’s operating system for 95% of new cars on the road. By 2026, more than 50% of EVs sold globally will be Chinese-branded automobiles.

Several factors will make 2023 a true test to the resolve of governments and the automotive industry in driving battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) forward, according to Gartner, Inc.

Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) is seeking more local business partners for joint investment in electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities to serve the growing domestic EV market.

Thailand is being developed into a high-potential EV market, following the government’s clear policy to strengthen the EV industry amid the global trend for using more zero-emission cars, said Martin Schwenk, president and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz (Thailand).

Should you arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport 3 or 4 hours prior to departure?

Thai Airways (THAI) and Airports of Thailand (AOT) can’t agree on waiting times at Suvarnabhumi Airport. THAI recommends that passengers on international flights should arrive four hours ahead of departure due to delays at the airport.

AOT says this is “not true” and asks passengers to arrive three hours ahead of schedule.

THAI asks for passengers’ cooperation in arriving four hours before their flight, citing that Suvarnabhumi Airport’s international checkpoint Zone 3 is closed due to the installation of automatic return tray systems (ARTS) taking place from March 1-29. Continued … 

Four new airlines to join Thailand’s crowded skies

The Thai Transport Ministry has announced that there are four companies seeking licenses to operate airline services in Thailand – P80 Air, Really Cool Air, Landarch Airline and Siam Seaplane.

The process of obtaining air service licenses is expected to take some time, and the four new airlines are expected to be approved to operate next year.

They join a crowded sky over Thailand, which already has Thai Air Asia, Thai Airways, Thai Lion Air, Thai Viet Jet, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways. Thai Smile, the short haul and discount offshoot from Thai Airways is expected to be amalgamated into the parent company. Continued …

Record number of Russian tourists affect economy

Thailand has seen a sharp rise in the number of Russian tourists in the country. So far this year, over 370,000 Russian visitors have arrived in Thailand. That’s 67% of last year’s entire total of 435,000.

Police Maj. Gen. Phanthana Nutchanart, the deputy commander of the Immigration Bureau, assures though that the influx has not increased Russian criminal activity.

The official stated that there has been no indication of any Russians sneaking into the country through illegal channels. They also say hardened criminals are not making it into Thailand, just well-off vacationers. Continued …

Russian tourist drowns at Phi Phi Island in Krabi

A male Russian tourist who had recently come from Phuket with a tour guide drowned at Phi Phi Island in Krabi.

Local media in Krabi reported that over the past weekend a 55-year-old male Russian tourist came from Phuket to Krabi with a tour guide. He joined in snorkeling activity with a tour group at Monkey Bay on Phi Phi Don Island.

Jumbo banquet served up in Ayutthaya to mark National Elephant Day

The residents of Wang Chang Ayutthaya elephant camp were served up a delicious feast on Monday to mark National Elephant Day.

Apart from feeding the 80 elephants in the camp, the staff also made merit for deceased pachyderms and prayed that this event would raise awareness among Thais.

The camp’s owner, Laitongrean Meephan, said this event is held every year to shed light on the important role elephants have played in Thai society. In ancient times, elephants were used for transport, labor and in battle, and now they play a significant role in the tourism industry. Continued …

Drivers of cars and motorcycles in Prachuap Khiri Khan are the subject of a new campaign aimed at boosting road safety.

On Tuesday, Satean Charoenyuen, the governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, presided over the launch of a campaign to promote mandatory car insurance among motorists, as well as the wearing of helmets among motorcyclists.

Thailand may be unique in handling the domestic prices of products and services. Whenever manufacturers and business operators shoulder higher production costs and ask state units for permission to raise their prices, the Internal Trade Department always rushes to call a joint meeting with them.

Most of the time, the manufacturers and operators come to an “agreement” to maintain prices while authorities monitor the market.

In one recent instance, seven manufacturers and distributors of baby and adult diapers talked with the department and agreed to maintain prices, even after announcing to the local media their plan to increase prices starting in March, in line with rising production costs. Continued …

Baht tipped to strengthen in 2023 after US rates peak

The baht is likely to recover and strengthen to 33-34 to the U.S. dollar by the end of 2023, as the greenback could go into reverse and start to depreciate in six months, says SCB Chief Investment Office (CIO).

The Thai currency traded below 35 baht to the dollar yesterday, moving in a range of 35.15 to 35.38, amid continued concerns over U.S. interest rate hikes. The baht, analysts said, was under pressure from capital outflows from the Thai stock and bond markets amid the dollar appreciation.

Excessive PM2.5 pollution in most of northern Thailand today

PM2.5 dust in most northern provinces today exceeds the safety level, being measured at between 61 and 200 microns. The situation is likely to deteriorate in the coming days, according to the Pollution Control Department.

The level of PM2.5 in most of Bangkok and its suburbs has been measured at between 39 and 114 microns, compared to the safety level in Thailand of 50 microns.

Only five areas in the northeast are reported to have excessive levels of PM2.5, measured between 23 and 130 microns. Continued … 

Thailand’s interprovincial bus operator ready to go electric

Transport Co.’s board of directors agreed on Tuesday to procure 75 electric buses for 12 routes across Thailand.

“The aim is to preserve the environment and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and PM2.5 dust particles,” Transport Co.’s Managing Director Sanyalak Panwattanalikhit said.

The National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards will promote the use of larvae of black soldier flies as main ingredients for making farm animal feeds and pet foods for both local consumption and export.

Bureau Secretary-general Pisan Pongsapitch unveiled the plan during a seminar jointly held by the Livestock Development Department, and the Thai Feed Mill Assn. at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Finnish expat found dead with throat cut in Chon Buri

A Finnish expat was found dead with his throat cut in Thailand’s Chon Buri province this morning. His Thai wife, 49-year-old Aranya Srisaeng, told police that she was the first person to find the body of her husband, 57-year-old Markku Tapanni Karjalainen. His death was reported at 8.30am.

Karjalainen had lived with Aranya in a single-story house in the Bang Saray subdistrict of Sattahip district.

According to Aranya’s statements, she and Karjalainen had been living together for five years without registering their marriage. Her husband had returned to Finland for a few years, but he came back about nine months ago and decided to buy a house. Continued …

TAT suggests tourism operators still upbeat on recovery outlook

Business operators still have confidence in the country’s tourism recovery as campaigns for the general election kick into high gear and the next phase of the “We Travel Together” scheme is projected to have the participation of more than 9,000 hotels, with the aim of stimulating domestic spending, says the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

TAT Gov. Yuthasak Supasorn said there had been 2 million foreign arrivals per month since January, which helped build positive momentum for the tourism industry.

He said that with the launch of the fifth phase of hotel subsidy under the We Travel Together program, domestic tourism should be stronger during the Songkran festival and would also help maintain domestic consumption during the transition period before a new government takes over in the second half of the year. Danish and Swedish passengers stranded in Bangkok

About 200 passengers from Denmark and Sweden were stranded at Bangkok airport after their flight from Krabi to Bangkok was delayed due to problems with the airport’s electricity.

Baht declines amid volatile markets

The baht fell to less than 35 against the U.S. dollar on Monday and recorded its lowest level for two months, after being the most volatile currency traded in the region this year.

The baht opened at 34.93 per dollar on Monday. During day-trade, it weakened to 35.16 against the greenback before closing at 35.10.

Roong Sanguanruang, head of global markets and research at the Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), said that over the past two months the baht had been the most volatile currency in the region. Continued …

The Pew Research Center reported that Thailand has the most motorcyclists in the world. Similarly, most victims of road accidents in the country are riding motorcycles.

If you’ve ever visited Vietnam, you might have noticed the abundance of motorbikes on the road, especially in Ho Chi Minh City. It may lead you to believe that Vietnam has the highest number of motorcyclists in the world.

However, a recent report by the Pew Research Center indicates that Thailand takes the lead in terms of motorbike ridership globally. Haze problem set to worsen in March

The Center for Air Pollution Mitigation (CAPM) on Monday revealed that the haze pollution the country faces, especially in the northern region, will likely worsen next month, while Bangkok and its adjacent provinces will likely experience high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

On Monday, the CAPM reported that the air quality in 25 locations across the country is at unhealthy levels, as PM2.5 levels have surpassed the safe threshold of 50μg/m³. Continued …

Two Wild Elephants, Mother and Son, Are Rescued

Rescue wildlife officers saved two wild elephants, mother and son, that fell into a 5-meter deep hole in the middle of the Forest Protection Conservation Unit Khao Borae, Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi, on Monday.

Residents reported to officials at the nearby Lam Khlong Ngu National Park at on Sunday. Officials then prepared the rescue mission with elephant conservation volunteers and rescue workers.

The incident in which the mother elephant and her 2-month-old son fell was a 5-meter sinkhole. Officials prohibited people from being near it because a herd of about 10 elephants was nearby trying to help the mother and son, which could pose a danger to people. Continued …

While many foreigners are investing in Chonburi province, Indian and Chinese investors have channeled the most funds in buying up businesses in Pattaya to cater to their countryfolk holidaying at this seaside tourist city, business people in this province said.

Indian investors bought up pubs and restaurants on Pattaya’s Walking Street before China lifted travel restrictions on Jan. 8, but their investment is not fully integrated as is the pattern of Chinese investors.

Chinese investors have started buying restaurants, three- to four-star hotels and pool villas in Bang Lamung area, Pattaya city and Jomtien beach. Their investment includes chartering tourists attractions to integrate as a comprehensive tourism venture to cater to Chinese tourists, these business sources said, adding that it is likely the zero-dollar tours will return. ‘Wild Boar’ Duangphet to be cremated in England today

The parents of Duangphet “Dom” Promthep, 18, one of the 12 boys rescued from a flooded cave in Chiang Rai in 2018, will hold a funeral ceremony today to coincide with his cremation in England where he died.

Duangphet, one of the Wild Boar football team members who, along with their coach, was trapped in Tham Luang Cave in 2018 for over two weeks, died in England on Feb. 14, after collapsing in his dormitory room on Feb. 12.

He had won a scholarship to study at Brooke House College, a football academy about 150 kilometers north of London, in August last year, and subsequently flew to England in September. Continued …

New round of state welfare card benefits to cover 14.5 million Thais

About 14.5 million low-income earners will be eligible for benefits under the new round of the state welfare card scheme, the Finance Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry will propose the plan for this year’s first round at a Cabinet meeting today, said minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.

After approval from the Cabinet, he expects to disburse the benefits from April 1 onward. Continued … 

Over 52 million Thais eligible to vote during May 7 election

As many as 52.32 million people are eligible to vote in the upcoming general election, with most voters aged between 42 and 57, social-tracking website Rocket Media Lab learned.

As per the Election Commission’s data, 52,322,824 out of 66,090,475 people across 400 electoral constituencies nationwide are eligible to vote.

2% fewer drinkers in Thailand since booze controls in 2008

The implementation of the alcoholic drink control act 15 years ago has led to a 2% drop in drinkers in Thailand, a seminar was told.

The seminar, titled “Different Views on 15-year Enforcement of the Alcoholic Drink Control Act”, was held on Sunday at Bangkok’s Asia Hotel. It had been organized by Moonlanithi Pua Sukphawa (Foundation for the State of Happiness) and the Network of Creative Media for Social Change.

Associate Prof. Dr. Udomsak Sae-ngow, director of the Research and Innovation Institute for Excellence at Walailak University, said since the act was implemented in 2008, there has been a definite drop in the number of boozers in Thailand. Continued …

Thai government plans major push to Laos train service

The Thai government plans to increase train service between Nong Khai province in Thailand and Thanaleng Station in Laos to 16 round trips a day in two years.

Work on the railway line between Nong Khai and Thanaleng, near Vietniane, was completed on June 30, 2022, and is presently operating, Tipanan Sirichana, deputy spokesperson for the prime minister’s office, said.

Currently, the train service runs twice a day, facilitating easy travel for Thai and Lao people. Continued …

Thailand and China to Expand Free Trade Agreement

Thailand has been stepping up trade cooperation with China by upgrading the free trade agreement (FTA) between China and ASEAN, including expanding mini FTAs with Chinese cities and provinces, Deputy Prime Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has said.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit made the announcement at the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce last week.

Jurin said the two countries enjoy practical cooperation under mechanisms including the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and mini FTAs between Thailand and Chinese provinces such as Hainan and Gansu. Continued … 

Mega-flood ‘likely’ in the next decade

Thailand is likely to suffer from another “mega-flood” similar to the historic inundation in 2011 in the next decade, as climate change will increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events all over the world, a conference was told on Monday.

The director of Climate Change and Disaster Center, Seree Supratid, said at a press conference organized by FutureTales Lab by MQDC and Esri Thailand, that according to climate forecasting models, Thailand is likely to be seriously affected by widespread inundation in the next few years, with up to 34% of about 70 million Thais set to be affected by floods. Cobra Gold 2023 officially begins in eastern provinces

Thailand Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Chalermpol Srisawasdi and U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Robert Godec today presided over the Cobra Gold 2023 opening ceremony at the Royal Thai Naval Airbase, Royal Thai Air Fleet in Rayong province.

Also attending the ceremony were the ambassadors to Thailand from Japan, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The Cobra Gold exercise is the largest joint multilateral military exercise in Southeast Asia, co-hosted annually in Thailand by the Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTARF) and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Continued …

 

 

Thailand welcomed 2.14 million international tourists last month

Thailand welcomed 2.14 million international tourists in January, data from the tourism ministry showed today. The data showed a small decline from the previous month.

The top three source markets last month were Malaysia with 288,745 tourists, Russia with 202,759 tourists, and South Korea 169,462 tourists.

However, the return of travelers from China, following the removal of Covid-19 restrictions, helped boost the numbers. A total of 91,841 Chinese tourists flocked to Thailand last month, compared with 3,110 in the same period last year. Continued …

Thailand continues to strengthen tourism ties with China following the high-profile meeting between Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s minister of tourism and sports, and Hu Heping, minister of culture and tourism of the People’s Republic of China, taking place in Beijing on Feb. 21.

Also present at the meeting were Atthayut Srisamut, Thailand ambassador to China, Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing, and Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Outbound visa applications in Thailand increase 576%

Applications for all visa types made between Jan. 1–31 last year grew by 576% when compared with applications made in the same time frame in 2021, reports VFS Global.

The fivefold increase shows that Thais are regaining their sense of adventure amid relaxed global restrictions, although visa applications are still not hitting pre-pandemic figures, reports TNA.

Head of VFS Global Australasia, Kaushik Ghosh, said, “The significant surge in visa applications from Thailand indicates that travelers’ confidence has rebounded faster than expected. With the peak outbound travel season expected to start in March, we expect this momentum to grow further and, therefore, those planning foreign travel outside of Thailand must apply for visas well in advance to avoid the last-minute rush.” Continued …

Songkran to test Thailand’s Covid defenses

Thai hospitals and community health centers have been ordered to prepare for a spike in Covid-19 infections over Songkran in April and schools reopening in June.

Hospitals have admitted 204 Covid-19 cases in the past week (Feb. 19-25), 66 of whom were suffering severe symptoms, said Public Health Permanent-secretary Opas Karnkawinpong on Monday.

Hong Kong scraps mask mandate after almost 1,000 days

Hong Kong is scrapping its mask mandate from tomorrow, Chief Executive John Lee announced, ending the financial hub’s last major Covid curb as it seeks to emerge from the pandemic.

The city was one of the last places in the world to require face coverings in virtually all public settings, with everyone over the age of two required to wear one or face a fine of up to HK$10,000 ($1,275).

Yasothon native, Suthep “Maew” Lomjit, began his trek from Nakhon Nayok to Satun on Jan. 14. His aim was to get to his girlfriend Thanapa “Yu” Khiaw-on, 56, by Feb. 14 and ask for her hand in marriage. Thunderstorms, strong winds, falling temperatures forecast until Friday

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has advised 50 provinces to brace for thunderstorms, strong winds and falling temperatures, by 1-3oC, with hailstorms in some areas from today until Friday.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok this morning, 60% of the capital was lashed by heavy rain, with poor visibility being reported by motorists on the expressways, forcing them to reduce the speed to prevent accidents.

The turbulent weather conditions are being caused by the arrival of a strong cold front from China, which is covering Thailand’s northeast and is forecast to spread to other regions, said the department, adding that these conditions will converge with the westerly winds, blowing through the north tomorrow and Friday. In February of 1998, 25 years ago this month, I was in Bangkok, ground zero of the Asian financial crisis. The implosion of the Thai baht had triggered a serial meltdown of currencies and markets, with protesters in the streets across the region and chaos spreading.

As world leaders raced to slow the global contagion, Thailand and its neighbors had sunk into a depression. The Thai economy contracted by nearly 20%, as stocks fell by more than 60% and the baht lost more than half its value against the dollar.

Prices in Bangkok felt unbelievably cheap. I did not dare buy Thai stocks, with so much unsettled. But I did leave with many shopping bags and two golf sets, one to give away. While the drama of that year is etched in history, the epilogue comes as a surprise. Continued …

‘Plant Trees – Get Mushrooms’ Strategy convinces farmers to save forests

Chulalongkorn University successfully planted trees in the forests in Nan and Saraburi provinces through innovative seedlings with ectomycorrhiza fungi, motivating villagers and farmers to “plant trees and get mushrooms”, for extra income.

Thailand’s forests are sadly dwindling. Many of the areas in the country have been denuded and degraded forest areas where restoration seems to be impossible. Although many sectors have tried to campaign for reforestation, it has not been easy.

This is because reforestation takes a very long time and, most importantly, requires the cooperation of local villagers to continue the task of planting and maintaining the forests. Continued …

Cobra Gold returns to Thailand with added bite of 6,000 US troops

Cobra Gold 2023 will be back to full strength at the end of this month when 30 nations, including 6,000 U.S. Personnel, will join the annual war games, Thailand and the United States announced on Tuesday.

This year’s military exercise will be the first to include training for space disasters, according to the press conference at Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters in Bangkok.

Bangkok’s number of train passengers reaches all-time high

Bangkok‘s number of train passengers reached an all-time high on Friday, Feb. 10. The number of people traveling by rail in and around Thailand’s capital city climbed to 1,577,330 that day, according to the Department of Rail Transport.

The department’s numbers revealed that the BTS Green Line served the most passengers, with 916,390 people using the service, followed by the Blue Line MRT with 429,825 passengers. The Airport Rail Link and the standard train service saw 72,737 and 73,659 passengers, respectively. The Red Line and Purple Line served 29,129 and 48,232 passengers, respectively, while the BTS Golden Line had the least number of passengers, with only 6,359 people using the service. Continued …

Cabinet approves tourist fee of 150-300 baht for all foreign arrivals

The Thai cabinet has approved the collection of a landing tax, ranging from 150-300 baht, to be collected from all foreign arrivals visiting Thailand, tentatively from June 1, as proposed by the National Tourism Policy Committee.

The landing tax for foreign arrivals arriving by land and sea will be 150 baht per head and 300 baht for arrivals by air. The tax is, however, not applied to those who hold diplomatic passports, work permits or special work permits for specific professions as stipulated by the Labor Ministry, children under two-years-old and transit passengers.

The cabinet also instructed the Immigration Bureau to streamline its regulations and conditions regarding immigration documents and relevant immigration laws, under which receipts for tourism fee payments can be used by the tourists when applying for re-entry permits. Continued …

‘Softening of demand after April’ – Phuket hoteliers worry about bookings

Phuket’s tourist arrival numbers have stabilized after the pre-Christmas/New Year surge in passenger arrivals at Phuket International Airport. Since the middle of December, arrival data shows that Phuket is welcoming 10,000-15,000 passengers a day.

Since the middle of January, however, the daily arrivals have flatlined, indicating an easing of demand as both the western and Chinese New Year holidays are now passed.

While Phuket hoteliers and tour group operators are cheering on the influx of visitors back to the island, there are some disturbing trends that may threaten Phuket’s sustainable tourist revival for the rest of 2023. Continued …

55% rise in infections and deaths from Covid virus

Scientists are urging the public not to dismiss or overlook Covid-19. While people worldwide have generally moved on from the fearful days at the height of the pandemic, the virus is still bringing infections and death and still mutating.

A Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Medicine doctor warns about a 55.6% increase in deaths and hospital admissions last week in Thailand. He estimates the daily infection tally could be between 2,800 to 3,889 during the week of Feb. 5 to Feb. 11.

Dr. Thira Woratanarat emphasized the importance of continuing to be cautious. Thira also stressed the importance of wearing face masks correctly, as this greatly reduces the risk of catching the virus and suffering illness or death. Continued …

Hua Hin-Suvarnabhumi bus schedule

The VIP bus service from Hua Hin to Suvarnabhumi Airport has a new Cha Am boarding location in front of Government Savings Bank. The one-way fare is 325 baht.

  • Leaving Hua Hin: 6am, 8am, 10am, 12:00, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm
  • Leaving Suvarnabhumi: 7:30am, 9:30am, 10:30am, 12:00, 2:30pm, 4pm, 6pm

The bus from Hua Hin to Pattaya departure time remains unchanged at 11am, at 473 baht. Tickets 

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, starting Feb. 19. The bus leaves Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departs from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.
