The effort was spearheaded by Police Major Gen. Watcharin Poosit, commander of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division (NED). The operation led to the detention of a 34-year-old Vietnamese man named Ho The Luc, along with his 42-year-old Thai accomplice, Sawitree. Continued …

Changed again: Handout to be ‘paid out at same time’

Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul insisted yesterday that the 50 million people eligible to each receive 10,000 baht under the government’s digital wallet scheme will receive the sum at the same time in the last quarter of the year as initially planned.

This comes as comments by government spokesman Chai Wacharonke reported by the media suggested otherwise the day before. Paopoom said he was correcting a misunderstanding about the 500-billion-baht handout that had been reported by the media. Continued …

Group predicts more factory closures

Factory shutdowns are expected to gradually increase after 1,600 to 1,700 already shuttered earlier this year because of the economic slowdown, merger plans or rising operating costs, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

“Many factories, including those owned by subcontractors, could not afford to pay workers, while others merged to reduce the number of employees,” said Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the FTI. Continued …

Aimed at controlling an influx of cheap imported goods, especially from China, this method is expected to create a more balanced market for local producers and importers. Thai Tourism Revenue to Hit 3 Trillion Baht, Falling Short of Goal

Thailand’s tourism industry expects to generate 3 trillion baht this year but will miss its 3.5 trillion baht target, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The shortfall is attributed to economic hurdles in key markets, primarily China.

As of today, Thailand has welcomed 14.9 million foreign visitors, bringing in 709 billion baht (US$19.4 billion). This revenue accounts for roughly 30% of the international income goal of 2.38 trillion baht (US$65 billion) set by the government. Continued …
