Thailand ranks in top 10 countries for low expat living costs

Thailand is among the top 10 countries with the lowest living costs for expats, according to the latest study published by expat network InterNations.

The Land of Smiles ranks eighth globally and fourth in Southeast Asia thanks to its affordable housing and utilities, according to “Personal Finance Index 2024”. The index also revealed that expats also find it fairly simple to rent property in Thailand. Continued …

Conflicts between neighbors occur in many cases, especially when social media is used by the parties to publicize their issues. This allows the general public to become aware of various disputes, ranging from noise and odor disturbances, pet problems, to conflicts in common areas, which can escalate into arguments or even physical assault.

Macaques becoming a problem in Khao Takiab

Tennis fans in Hua Hin will be disappointed to learn the Women’s Tennis Assn. (WTA) has announced the relocation of the Thailand Open, a WTA 250 event, to Singapore in 2025.

The event, which had become a staple in Hua Hin, will now be held at the purpose-built Kallang Tennis Hub in Singapore from Jan. 27, 2025. Continued …

Military wants Bt300-million redevelopment of northern Thai oilfield

Fang oilfield in Chiang Mai, the oldest oilfield in Thailand, is to be redeveloped at a cost of 300 million baht, according to the Defense Energy Department’s Northern Petroleum Development Center (NPDC).

The oil refinery was expected to be upgraded to Euro5 and capable of producing lower-sulphur diesel, confirming that the oil would not damage car engines, Maj. Gen. Montri jeennakorn the director of the NPDC, said. Continued …

The Thai parents and guardians of 27 girls accompanied them to file a complaint against the director of Ban Phongam School in the central province of Lopburi for allegedly sexually assaulting them.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) announced plans to construct a 50-billion-baht tunnel expressway connecting Kaset and Ngamwongwan. Public opinion on the project will be gathered and considered on July 13.

A massive python caused quite a stir when it was discovered inside an ATM at a local bank. Rescue workers had to carefully dismantle the machine to capture the snake, sparking a flurry of online jokes and comments.

Cash handouts: Boon or bane for Thailand’s long-term growth?

Economic experts recently warned that the government’s cash handout policies, aimed at lifting people above the poverty line, could negatively impact Thailand’s financial status in the long term.

Thailand has remained at the “developing” country level since it was rated by the World Bank in 1988. The country’s GDP per capita, a key development indicator, sits at around US$6,900 or 230,000 baht – more than 50% less than the $15,000 or 500,000 baht per annum required to achieve high-income status. Budget for digital wallet scheme reduced to Bt450 billion

The government will scale down the budget for the digital wallet scheme from 500 billion baht to 450 billion and will drop the plan to use 170 billion baht from the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

Julapun said on Wednesday that the decision to scale down the budget and cancel the plan to borrow from the BAAC was reached during a meeting of his subcommittee in charge of steering the digital wallet scheme. Continued …

People who receive the government’s 10,000-baht handout will not be able to use the digital cash to buy mobile phones, electrical appliances or electronic devices, authorities said on Wednesday.

Thailand’s economic outlook: Q3 recovery amid GERM risks

Thailand’s economic outlook remains volatile due to domestic and global factors. In Q1 2024, the economy grew slowly at 1.5% year-on-year (yoy), or 1.1% quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted (qoq, sa).

EV makers advised to look for export markets as oversupply looms

The Thai Electric Vehicle Assn. (EVAT) is urging manufacturers of electric vehicles (EVs) in Thailand to prepare for oversupply in the next few years due to the production requirement under the EV 3.0 policy.

The policy offers import tax exemption for EV makers, as well as other subsidies, but mandates them to produce the cars locally at a ratio of 1:1 to those imported in 2024 (importing 1 EV for every 1 locally produced EV) and a 1:1.5 ratio for cars imported in 2025 (importing 1 EV for every 1.5 locally produced EVs). The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) disclosed active strategies for next year aimed at attracting Japanese tourists to Thailand, after the group showed signs of recovery despite the yen’s depreciation, TAT Tokyo office director Kajorndet Apichartrakul said on Wednesday.
